Sandra and I painted in Chickamauga Battlefield Park that cool morning, but the temperature was climbing fast. This trail is used by hikers, bikers and people on horseback as they explore the many acres of this beautiful Northwest Georgia park. The red Georgia clay appeared with lots of pink that morning - so that's how I painted it.

I don't intend to make them particularly look tropical but rather as if some painter out of the 18th or 19th century would have done them in a still life set up- back when probably few people had ever heard of bananas or seen them outside of South America.

"Wild Irish Iris" by Karla Nolan, oil/canvas

Once upon a time the Nolan family took a trip to Ireland to see the "old country" (on my husband's side). We stayed in Dingle, Ireland, near Slea Head. The ocean beckoned, so of course we went to it. But the fields also beckoned and this is the flower which I saw growing wild. Quite the surprise.

We're past the iris season now, but I always look forward to the next one. Maybe tomorrow I'll post my latest glass painting, "The Four Irises" (as opposed to The Three Tenors!). Have a good day.

It was a great day for thunderstorms...in the distance. We got some nice rain in the afternoon, but the huge anvil heads, like this one, passed us by. But what a view. I only had about five minutes to run into the house and grab my pastels before this one disappeared. I tried my blue paper this time, and I think that caught the light of twilight well. The grey appeared to grow out of the muted blue in the way the clouds do when you can't quite tell whether or not you're seeing sky or a storm. I tried some bright colors for the light on the clouds this time, rather than my usual white or light yellow. It was so fun to add those hints of pink!

My "Lavender & White Irises" have just returned home from it's national tour with the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. I am offering it up for purchase directly through me until Monday morning, then I will put it up for auction on ebay. It's a wonderful, jewel of a watercolor, that is special to me as it is my first award from a national exhibition. It was the winner of the "Maurice Pendergast Award", a huge honor. (There were over 900 entries for this exhibition and only 85 pieces were chosen.) I received the exhibition catalog and I'm so honored to have been a part of this show, with so many really wonderful transparent watercolors. The piece will be shipped framed with plexiglass, as it appeared in the show.

In my never ending search for rainy urban scenes I traveled to Seattle. I planned my trip for November on the advice from friends who live there that I was assured rainy weather. Well...as it turned out I didn't get the rain I wanted but experienced a lot of fog in the morning hours and the beautiful warm sun later in the day. Although the reality of the trip wasn't what I was searching for it turned out just dandy and I captured wonderful painting reference none the less.
