AIIMS scraps 50% cut-off marks in MBBS entrance exam- TOI

TOI reports that Unable to fill all reserved category seats last year, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has decided to do away with 50% cut-off criteria in its AIIMS MBBS entrance exam from this academic session. The decision is likely to spark controversy as faculty members and junior doctors feel that this is is in violation of SC order, according to which, there ought to be cut-off marks in all medical entrance exams.

Now, if a reserved category student scores a zero or negative marks he/she can still get admission in AIIMS provided there is seat available in category he/she belongs to. According to rules, if reserved category seats are not filled, then these will filled up by general category students.

"Now, a reserved category student will get admission in AIIMS even if he/she scores zero in the entrance exam. A general category student with 50% marks will be rejected as the seat belongs to the reserved category. The 50% marks in entrance exam was a way to to get deserving students in AIIMS,'' said Dr Rahul Bhargava, president, Resident Doctors' Association, AIIMS.

According to Dr Sunil Chumber, sub-dean academics, AIIMS, "This is a hypothetical situation no one scores a zero in the entrance exam. And I don't want to comment on a situation which will never occur. Moreover, only those students are eligible to apply who have scored 50% marks in class 12.''

But senior faculty members feel that this will bring down the standard of India's premier medical institute. "If a student can't score a minimum of 50% in the entrance exam, how will he/she clear the regular exams which are part of the curriculum ? Are we going to lower the pass percentage of the regular exams conducted as part of the MBBS programme?'' asked a senior faculty member.

The MBBS entrance exam is scheduled for June 1 and there are around 77 seats in the course. Faculty members and resident doctors say that the scrapping of the 50% cut-off marks in entrance exam is against the Supreme Court order. "The SC order says that there should be a difference in cut-off marks between general and reserved category candidates. How can they (AIIMS administration ) scrap it on its own? This is against the SC order,'' said Dr Bhargava.

CLAT 2009 Law Entrance Postponed, New Dates Soon

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), the admission Test to India's 11 premier national law universities , scheduled for Sunday has been postponed after two locked and sealed steel trunks containing test material were found tampered with while in transit from Hyderabad to Lucknow , reports the Times of India. New dates for the undergraduate and postgraduate programme entrance exams will be announced soon.

"Two locked and sealed steel boxes containing the CLAT-2009 test material were found with broken latches and locks while in transit from Hyderabad to Lucknow through Blue Dart Courier services,'' said Veer Singh, convener of CLAT-2009 and vice-chancellor of Nalsar University of Law in Hyderabad, the institute in charge of conducting this year's entrance exam.

It is not clear where the trunks were tampered with. V Narayana Swamy, registrar of the National University of Advanced Legal Studies said that when the trunks reached Lucknow, they were reportedly received in a damaged condition. This is the second year that the national law universities are conducting a joint entrance exam. The institutes merely courier the test paper, unlike the process followed by the IIMs or the IITs, where a faculty member travels with the exam paper boxes.

"However, now, we will have to rethink the transportation process. The courier agency transports our trunks via road in their special vehicles,'' added another registrar. By Wednesday, the vice-chancellors were contemplating holding the test on a Sunday two weeks from May 17. "We prepare two sets of question papers. But a question now arises on the mode in which they should be transported to all exam centres,'' pointed out another faculty member. Around 15,000 students from across the country were supposed to take Sunday's exam.

However, following the development, an urgent meeting of all the 11 vice-chancellors has been convened on Thursday. Singh added that after examining the trunks, the registrar of Dr Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University in Lucknow, in his report stated: "It seems to be a case of deliberate tampering with the boxes.'

While the All India Engineering Entrance Examination(AIEEE) was easier than expected this year, there were a few surprises in store for students who appeared for the test on Sunday. While the single paper format was retained this year, the number of questions was reduced per section from 35 last year to 30 this year, making it a total of 90 questions.

When compared to last year, the marks have increased from 320 to 432 this year. However, the number of questions reduced from 35 per session to 30. Equal weightage was given for physics, chemistry and mathematics.

AIEEE experts said there was a mix of different questions this year, which could have troubled the students.

"The variety of questions in the paper is not typical of AIEEE. This is the IIT style. But since most students who write AIEEE also appear for IIT, most of them would be comfortable with the questions," TIME academic coordinator Ajay Anthony said. He said that the eight marks question type would be the decisive element in this AIEEE and this might decide the ranks of students. The three different question types which was introduced in AIEEE this year was normal multiple choice questions, assertion reason type questions and paragraph questions.

Some students from the city found the questions easier than the previous year. "The mathematics part was tougher than physics. Though the number of questions reduced, the questions were designed in such a way that the candidate has to spend more time on it," Rishi Karthik, who wrote the examination at Obul Reddy Public School, said. Karnataka CET "MUST" for Dental Courses in 2009

The government on Friday withdrew its earlier decision to scrap the CET for BDS and the Indian System of Medicine (ISM) courses. The election code of conduct has prevented the government from enacting legislation to cancel CET.

Medical Education Minister Ramachandra Gowda announced on Friday that students who intend to take a seat through the government will have to appear for the Common Entrance Test (CET) in May. Candidates for Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Homeopathy, and Naturopathy will also have to appear for the CET test.

Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) officials confirmed that in lieu of the government’s decision, the examination and counselling dates for these courses will be as specified in the application/brochure issued for this year. According to the minister, the Bellary Dental College could fill only three seats out of the 50 last year. The rest of the seats were filled after the local representatives took permission from the government.

Interestingly, the huge vacancy of seats in dental colleges across the State leaves open the possibility that a student, who is willing to take risk, can directly get admitted without opting for CET.

Candidates appearing for COMEDK UGET-2009 will be issued a Test Admission Ticket (TAT) for identification. The HDFC Bank Meritus Scholarships is one of the initiatives by which
we intend to bring more opportunities to talented and deserving students.

HDFC plans to give out over 5000 Scholarships ranging from Rs.2,500
to Rs.10 Lakh amounting to Rs.1.5 crore, to students from the 4th to
the 9th standard.

A special panel of judges will evaluate the final shortlisted

Evaluation will be based on the following parameters:
