Pattern weights are small pieces of heavy metal encased in fabric. They are round in shape and slightly flexible. You can use them to hold down your template while you trace it or to hold your pattern onto the fabric while you cut it with scissors or a rotary cutter.

Place them on your sewing instruction book to hold it open. Keep your sewing and embroidery notes from flying away by holding them down with a weight. Use these weights as a paperweight at your desk or in the kitchen to hold open a recipe book. With the many varieties of uses, you will want more than one package! These little weights are great for many things!Serenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10992006554970899543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23778244.post-2508041135995224882008-07-09T07:21:00.001-05:002008-07-09T07:21:00.564-05:00Where can you stitch on a shirt?
There are so many designs that can be stitched on shirts to wear. Not only are the embroidery designs great in number, but also the places where they can be stitched. The first place we often think of stitching a design on a shirt is in the center front or left front.

But have you tried stitching on the sleeve or down the placket? What about the tip of the collar or the yoke in the back? There are many places to stitch embroidery designs that can make your designs look so creative and neat!

Serenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10992006554970899543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23778244.post-590108384965881362008-07-03T07:44:00.001-05:002008-07-03T07:44:28.318-05:00Busy with shirts and more shirts

The last couple of days (and more days to come later in July) I have been stitching company logos on shirts for a local business. These shirts were actually fun to do since I could match the thread colors with the colors in the shirts.

The plaid shirts turned out neat as I stitched a small logo on the collar and a larger logo on the short right sleeve. But after stitching over 20 shirts with the same design, I have to say I'm glad they are done and finished!Serenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10992006554970899543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23778244.post-2330283314618501732008-07-01T19:01:00.002-05:002008-07-01T19:04:44.376-05:00Selecting Embroidery Thread Colors

One of the great benefits of machine embroidery is being able to choose your own thread colors for whatever design and fabric you are using. Many designs can be stitched in one color or only a couple of colors. One fun thing to do is to take lettering and match the colors of the fabric to the thread.

In this design, I matched the mint green background in the shirt to the shading of the lettering. The blue thread for the majority of the lettering matches the blue flowers in the shirt fabric. This logo design creates a professional touch to the shirt without drawing too much attention to it. The colors you decide to put in your embroidery designs can greatly effect the image you want your design to portray. Have fun choosing thread colors and keep in mind the mental image you want the colors to represent!

Serenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10992006554970899543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23778244.post-48843993287077957352008-06-30T07:40:00.001-05:002008-07-21T10:15:41.318-05:00Monday Giveaway: Black Isacord Thread

Congratulations to blacarly for winning last week's fabric giveaway!

Win a black spool of Isacord polyester embroidery thread!

Isacord thread is a high quality polyester thread with a high sheen. This is usually caused by two things: (1) Many times black is used for finishing details or outlines and is therefore being stitched over layers of other embroidery. This causes the thread, no matter if it's black or not, to be more likely to break as it is being stitched over the other stitches. (2) Black is the darkest thread color available and therefore has the most dye in it which weakens it just ever so slightly more than other colors.

Black thread will always be more likely to break than other colors, but there are a couple of things you can do to avoid some thread breakage.

~ Slow the machine down. If your machine is stitching a black outline, it is usually stitching over other layers of stitches, making it more likely to break. Slowing your machine down will help to prevent the thread from breaking or shredding.

~ Make sure you have a sharp needle. My favorite needles for embroidery are Organ Titanium needles because they stay sharper longer and cause less thread breakage. Above all, be sure your needle is sharp without any burrs or hooks on the point. A dull or blunt needle can easily cause thread breakage or shredding.

~ Use polyester black embroidery thread. Polyester thread is stronger than rayon and less likely to break. I prefer to use Isacord polyester thread over any other for all my thread colors, but especially with black. Since I started using Isacord black poly thread, I rarely have problems with my thread breaking or shredding with that color.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Special Offer:
If you would like to try some black polyester Isacord thread, email me (infoATembtreasures.com) your mailing address and I will mail you a sample for you to try. It really makes a difference in stitching outline and details. You will be amazed at how well it stitches!
Offer ends July 31, 2008.Serenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10992006554970899543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23778244.post-17552439680925037572008-06-23T11:10:00.006-05:002008-06-30T08:03:16.245-05:00Monday Giveaway: Surprise fabric!
Congratulations to dolls123 for winning last week's giveaway of Titanium Needles!
Win this little roll of surprise fabric all bundled up with ribbon! So I have my project in one hand and with the other hand am trying to keep a hold of the pins, scissors, thimble, spool of thread and needle.
That's where the Grabbit comes in. It's magnetic, so my pins and needle (which always has a bit of thread in it so it doesn't get lost) stick to it. My thread snipping scissors and quilting thimble both have the needed materials to keep that magnetic hold as well. Instead of hauling around a spool of thread, I use a bobbin filled with thread so that it sticks to the Grabbit and I don't lose it. Many times I will have thread leftover on my bobbin and if not, I just wind a little.
By doing this, all of my tools are contained to my Grabbit. They are easy to find, hard to lose and simple to tote places! No wonder this little tool is called a "Grabbit", because it really does grab those things!
Serenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10992006554970899543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23778244.post-74670495573471855622008-06-16T20:23:00.002-05:002008-06-16T20:42:09.551-05:00Great sewing-to-go box ideasLast week I posted my sewing-to-go box and had some wonderful ideas of what some of you do for sewing projects on the go.
scraphappy said: I always have a sew on the go kit ready as well. With the titanium coating, these needles last up to five times longer than conventional chrome-plated needles. They are more wear resistant which reduces needle breakage, bending and distorting. This is very advantageous for the reliability and durability when stitching embroidery designs.
The titanium coating also strengthens the point of the needle. The needle is continuously going in and out of the fabric, dulling the needle point with each stitch which will cause needle wear and breakage. The strength of the needle has been reinforced while maintaining a perfect shape to provide greater wear resistance and durability.
Titanium needles are great for machine embroidery! Stop and really think about how many times the needle penetrates the fabric -- many times! For every stitch, the needle is being inserted into the fabric. So if your design has 20,000 stitches in it, the needle has gone through the fabric at least 20,000 times. This dulls your needle in a hurry! Titanium needles are a great help because they are stronger, last longer, less likely to break and keep your thread flowing smoothly through the eye of the needle!
Machines that fit Schmetz needles can also use Organ Titanium needles: Bernina, Brother, Elna, Husqvarna, Janome, Juki, Melco, Necchi, Baby Lock, New Home, Pfaff, Poem, Riccar, Simplicity, Singer, Viking, White and more...
This giveaway if for one package of needles which contains 10 titanium needles, size 80/12.
Note from Serena: I don't know how I could stitch all the embroidery designs I do without using titanium needles! I use titanium needles for all kinds of threads - embroidery, metallic, metallic sliver, cotton, monofilament and polyester - they last longer, are less likely to break and help to prevent the thread from breaking. They are a little more expensive than Schmetz needles, but with the longer stitching time that they can be used, it ends up saving me $$ and LOTS of frustration! Not only do they last longer for machine embroidery, but they also work great for piecing, quilting and any other type of sewing! Give them and try and you will discover you can't sew without titanium needles!
--To be entered in this giveaway, just leave a comment on this post with your name.
--Post a link to this giveaway on your blog and leave a second comment with the blog post url and you will be entered twice in the giveaway.
--Comments will be open until next Monday, June 23rd and the winner announced that same day.
--This giveaway is only available to US residents.
--You must leave an email address in the comments or link back to a blog so I can contact you if you win. Some little box or container that contains those few necessary sewing tools and a project to work on when you are on the run? It's a good idea to keep some hand work ready to take with you when you need it.
I always keep a sewing box filled with some kind of hand work that I can grab if needed. If I know I am going to be traveling a long distance or occupying a chair in a waiting room for a while, having something to stitch while I'm waiting is great to have! Not only does it keep my mind and hands busy and keep me from getting bored, but also I am able to get something done while I'm just sitting, unable to do anything else.
The necessary things I keep stowed away in my box, depends on what type of hand work I have inside. Right now I have several applique firefly blocks that I am outlining by hand. There are several blocks inside with the applique pieces fused on, ready to stitch. Also inside is a pair of thread clipping scissors, a thimble, a Grabbit with pins, seam gauge and ripper. I always keep those tools in my box and change the fabric project with fabric and thread as needed. It stays on a bookcase in my sewing room and is ready to grab and go out the door when I need it.
What do you take with you when you are traveling or waiting?Serenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10992006554970899543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23778244.post-70897261982405517902008-06-04T09:35:00.001-05:002008-06-04T11:21:12.306-05:00Recycled Fabric Swap - June 2008
The recycled fabric swap is on it's way! Pressing can make a huge difference in the projects we are making such as making a wrinkled piece of fabric look brand new or a crooked seam look straight. But if you are pressing with a not-so-clean sole plate on your iron, your pressing can end up in disaster!
Whether you are using a teflon or stainless steel sole plate on your iron, be sure it is squeaky clean. Rust, scorched areas and leftover sticky residue from fusibles can easily be transferred from your iron to your fabric. If you are unsure of how clean your sole plate is, run your iron back and forth several times on a white piece of fabric and see what comes off your iron. You might be surprised!
If you are putting water in your iron for steam and haven't done so in a while, be sure to check for any rust particles that could be coming out of your iron. Use steam on a scrap of fabric before using on your project. There can be pieces of scorched fabric or fusible residue left on your iron that needs to be cleaned by using an iron cleaner such as Dritz Iron Off. Put a little Iron Off on a heavy piece of fabric such as duck or canvas and run your hot, dry iron back and forth several times to clean the plate. Then be sure there isn't any leftover cleaner by swiping your iron on a white scrap of fabric.
Also be sure that your ironing board cover is clean. If there are brown spots or sticky residue on the cover, it can easily be transferred to your fabric when a hot iron is run over the surface. Lay a piece of white fabric on the board and press the fabric with a hot iron several times to be sure there isn't anything on the board that could be getting on your project.
Every iron is different and has different cleaning instructions. Be sure to check your iron manual for the best ways to keep it clean and in good working order. An ironing board will only last so long, so be sure to replace yours as needed. By keeping your iron and ironing board clean, your project will stay that way as well!Serenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10992006554970899543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23778244.post-86877879451868123672008-06-02T11:27:00.005-05:002008-06-10T14:00:41.609-05:00Monday Giveaway: Machingers quilting gloves
Congratulations to Jeanne for winning last week's giveaway of fat quarters!
Machingers by Quilter's Touch are the perfect gloves designed for machine quilters for machine quilting and piecing! This would make a nice gift for a summer wedding present or any summer picnic event!
Materials for four place mats:
Fabric 1 - 1 yard of fabric for the top of the mat
Fabric 2 - 2/3 yard of coordinating fabric for the backing
Medium weight fusible interfacing or fusible fleece
10 yards of double-fold bias tape
Instructions:
1. Cut 4 pieces 12" x 18" for the mats of fabric 1. Cut 4 pieces 12" x 18" for the backing of fabric. Cut 4 pieces 12" x 18" of interfacing or fleece. Cut 8 pieces of 7" x 9" for the silverware pocket of fabric 1. Cut 8 pieces 3" x 4" for the napkin holders of fabric 1.
2. Fuse the interfacing or fleece to the back of the top mat fabric.
3. Make the silverware pocket by stitching two 7" x 9" pieces, right sides together. Leave an opening for the turning. Trim and turn. Position the pocket 1" from the sides of the mat. Stitch the pocket onto the mat along the sides and bottom. Topstitch the pocket with three 3" wide silverware sections.
4. Like the silverware pocket, stitch the napkin holder, right sides together, and turn. Place the napkin holder on the mat, 1" from the left side and centered from top to bottom. Topstitch the sides, letting it arch so a napkin can be inserted.
5. Layer mat top on backing, wrong sides together. Round off the corners. Using a 32" topstitched bias strip for the tie, fold it in half and position it on the left side of the mat.
6. Edge finish the mat with bias tape, stitching the tie in the binding process.
Download printable directions here.
Serenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10992006554970899543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23778244.post-41827443306139945942008-05-26T19:04:00.002-05:002008-05-26T19:13:25.364-05:00Link for printable directions for fabric bookcase coversI've had several emails asking for printable directions for the fabric covers I made for my bookcases that hold my fabric. The longest side's dimension will vary if your fabric is not 44" wide.
Why would I want a fat quarter?
Look at the illustration (click link below) and you'll see that a fat quarter gives you the opportunity to cut larger chunks of fabric than would be possible from a regular quarter-yard, including strips that are twice as long on the fabric's (less stretchy) lengthwise grain.
A fat quarter offers more versatility, whether it's for patchwork or appliqué. Quilt shops know that fat quarters are popular, and usually offer a wide assortment of them, pre-cut and ready to go.
You can use fat quarters for strip piecing by making extra strip sets from shorter lengths of fabric until you've cut the number of segments required for the pattern.
Take a peek at her illustration and continuing article here.Serenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10992006554970899543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23778244.post-5082170835294292022008-05-19T14:54:00.002-05:002008-05-19T15:50:06.841-05:00February Recycled Fabric Swap UpdateLast week I received two large boxes of fabric in the mail and it looks like the two smorgasbord boxes have made the rounds around the country!
