Well, I have officially decided to hang my own shingle and give the online marketing game a run. I'll be done at Sanford Health on February 22 and will certainly miss all the great people there. I've enjoyed helping take their online game to the next level, but am quite excited about the challenges that lie ahead by starting my own venture.

I've tightened down the name and logo, but still have muchos workos to do. Watch for more information to follow. And if you want an early peak on what Click Rain will be up to, drop me a note.

LinkedIn is a great 2.0 site that I find myself spending (wasting?) more time on than I should. One thing I can't figure out, however, is why they always decide to do "routine" site maintenance during peak traffic times - usually between 8-10PMCST?

Embracing Local Search

A recent study by Nielsen and WebVisible (as summarized by SearchEngineLand.com here) shows some interesting, but not suprising, trends in search. Particularly, search has floated to the top as the primary method people use to get local info - above the print yellow pages, above the online yellow pages, and above newspaper. When 81% of people call the internet "vital" to their day-to-day and 90% have used it for local search, it's time small businesses embrace (further) the power and potential of search.

There was a lot of chatter this week over the Microsoft/Facebook deal in which Gates and Co. paid a hefty chunk of cash for a small ownership stake in the social networking giant. There's a good article here on the Google/Microsoft chess game that is going on and whether or not Google subtly "pushed" Microsoft into the Facebook investment on the eve of Google's Open Social announcement.

This is going to be fun to watch.

Forbes 400 (I didn't make it again)

The infamous Forbes 400 issue came out today. T. Denny Sanford, namesake of my organization, was one of those profiled in this year's issue....obviously a huge honor when you look down the list. This is a great story on an absolutely great guy. And from reading the article, it certainly appears that this isn't the last time we'll be seeing big things from Mr. Sanford.

I'm recently back from the Mrs. America pageant in Tucson where my wife competed for the 2007 title. While she didn't win, I am gosh-darn proud of her. And I got the meet Alan Thicke. You can check out the broadcast on the WE channel this Friday, September 21 at 7PM CST.

Also, I've learned my lesson on flying with a 20-month old. Always fully charge the DVD player or plan for a long, long flight.

A recent Johns Hopkins study on kids perception of McDonalds food reveals some interesting (but not surprising) results regarding the branding effect of the fast food behemoth. The long and short of it is that you take two identical burgers, put one in a McDonalds bag, and three-quarters of the little shavers will say the McD's burger tastes better. While this isn't necessarily a huge shock, it does reinforce the massive mindshare that McD's owns on youth and the clear leadership position they can play in helping "correct" the much-talked-about, little-action-taken-on children obesity issue. That's some supersized McResponsibility. That's my last McJoke.
