Nuneaton CTC Cycle Club was re-constituted in 1978 and has continued its activities without a break ever since. Our catchment area is extensive - with participating members from Nuneaton, Hinckley, Bedworth, Polesworth and Coventry joining us in rides and events. Last year was the 30th anniversary of the group.

The Saturday "Snake Ride"

Chris led 5 riders along Sustrans route 52 out into the Leicestershire lanes on route to the tithe barn at the Bosworth Battlefield Visitors centre. A new route from Sutton Cerney through Ambion wood was used. New skills were learnt by riders with negotiating the gates that protect the cycle paths.

One of the highlights of the ride was discovering a dead snake by the side of the road.

Sunday 15^th July - The President’s Ride

The meeting point for the President’s ride this year is the café at Abbeyfields Park, Kenilworth.

I plan to arrive at Abbey fields about 11 o’clock from Nuneaton and set of for Yardingdale common at 11.30 (my plans as usual will be flexible)

I am taking the ride to Yardingdale common to visit “Rays bench”. Ray Hudson was one of our cycling colleagues from Coventry who died a few years ago on the road nearby.

I intend taking a picnic lunch, but for those of you who prefer or in the event of too much damp stuff, I have made arrangements with the Crown Inn at Claverdon to accommodate us, where I will be checking out the real ale. Their menu is fairly standard: -

MacRide 2007 is on Sunday 9 September 2007 - the website with all the details is at www.macride.org.uk and we are taking entries - just download and send your entry form.

Do please help us to raise even more this year for Macmillan Cancer Support - all the money is spent within the Warwickshire & Coventry area - and don't forget that through the generosity of our sponsors, supporters and volunteers our costs are minimal (less than £200 in 2006) - that means that over 95% of the entry fees and 100% of sponsorship and donations go to Macmillan.

We are running the popular 25 and 50 miles routes again, but this year, by popular demand, we have added a third distance option for a "metric century" - that's 100Km or about 63 miles. By offering this distance we are hoping to attract an even bigger field of riders, especially club cyclists and Audax riders - and anyone who likes a bigger challenge!

.... and please note : with the increase in rider numbers (and hopefully even more this year!) we have out-grown the start venue and will be starting MacRide 2007 from the Stratford Park & Ride (by arrangement with Warwickshire County Council & Johnson's Coaches, the operator) - the cycling routes will still be on quiet roads, using the off-carriageway cycle-paths to and from the start.

BBC 4 will next week screen a programme on the Edwardian bicycle featuring Doug Pinkerton riding his Dursley Pedersen from 1905 and an interview with Steve Bagley, curator of the Coventry Transport Museum (that has a huge collection of bikes). 8.30pm BBC-4 on Wednesday May 9th.

Take the bite out of rough roads.

Did you watch Paris-Roubaix on Versus last Sunday? Some riders love the cobblestones and use them to great advantage. They know that other riders, even some great pros, never get the hang of it and hate races on gnarly roads. They're defeated even before the flag drops.

The same goes for fast recreational riding. If you have the skill, rough stretches won't be a problem and you'll even think they're fun. But if you're intimated, you'll struggle mentally and physically, go slow and get dropped by groups you'd normally have no trouble staying with.

The good news is that even at a brisk pace, anyone can learn to handle rough sections. When a stretch of your local pavement resembles the Hell of the North, try these tips:

---Reduce tire pressure. A 160-pound rider should normally run about 100 psi in the rear and around 95 psi up front when on 700x23C tires. But when you know the day's course will be on rough roads, reduce pressure about 10 psi so tires will transfer less shock to the bike and won't chatter as badly in turns.

The importance of proper pressure was just underscored in Paris-Roubaix. British pro Roger Hammond (T-Mobile) flatted and received a front wheel from a neutral support vehicle. But it was inflated so hard that he had trouble controlling his bike on the remaining cobbled sections. "I think it cost me dearly towards the end," he says. "I was bouncing on the cobbles instead of floating over them. . . . I couldn't go over the cobbles as fast as [other riders] with the pressure in the front tire."

Caution! Don't run tires so soft that they'll pinch flat when you clobber a rock or edge of a pothole. You'll need to experiment to find the inflation pressure that works best for your weight in a variety of conditions.

---Shift to a higher gear. Use a slightly bigger gear (smaller cog) than you would if the same section of road were smooth. This lets you sit back on the saddle and pedal with a lower, steadier cadence. It puts more weight on the pedals and less on the seat, reducing uncomfortable jolts.

---Relax! Keep a secure grip on the handlebar so your hands won't bounce off, but don't squeeze it and create stiff tension throughout your arms. Instead, let the bike's front end float over the rough stuff and find its line. Tensing up holds the front wheel rigidly in place. When it hits an edge, it veers. A relaxed grip lets the bike flow.

Dear fellow CTC member

There are some days when being a CTC member adds an extra spring into every pedal stroke. Friday was one of those days. Bringing cyclists together as a passionate, supportive community is at the very heart of what we do, and the acquittal of Daniel Cadden on charges of 'inconsiderate cycling' reflects the best of CTC.

When Daniel Cadden approached CTC because he was facing prosecution for inconsiderate cycling, it was immediately clear that here was a young man who needed support and advice. Without hesitation we arranged for our expert legal team to look at the case, and on their advice referred it to the Cyclists' Defence Fund, the charity founded by CTC for just such circumstances.

Neither we nor Daniel ever expected the perverse judgement from the first case, which saw him convicted for simply choosing to riding his bicycle on the road rather than a nearby cycle path.

Daniel was particularly brave and determined to see the right thing done for cyclists despite the very stressful circumstances, and I know how much he has valued the personal support from the group of CTC friends that have formed to support this case. The fact that many of them had never met except online, but felt they should travel to Telford from all over the country on Friday says a great deal about how this case has been adopted by our family of cyclists.

As Daniel said outside court: "The recognition in this case must go to the real heroes, all those people who have supported it either financially by giving to the Cyclists' Defence Fund, by joining CTC or by sending messages of support to myself and my family. Without the support of these people this fight would not have been possible. The overwhelming sum donated to the Cyclists' Defence Fund has been testament to the solidarity shown by the cycling community on this issue."

So I'd like to say thank you on behalf of CTC: To Daniel for his determination;to the Trustees of the Cyclists' Defence Fund who are building up the fund to a level where it can take on the most challenging of cases, there is a long way to go but the sum donated during this case (in excess of £25,000) is a real step forward; to CTC's Accident Line legal team for their support for our members, often at a time when they face the most challenging of circumstances, and finally to you for your ongoing support for CTC. It is our shared passion for cycling and cyclists that makes CTC what it is. It can't happen without you.

January Sunday Origami Ride

12 Cyclists enjoyed the good weather today cycling though the Warwickshire lanes. Meeting at Berkswell Station, there was a draw between the 3 Moulton owners and the 3 Dahon riders. The other bikes were 2 Airnimals, 1 Brompton, 1 Birdy red and 2 large wheelers.

From here we headed to Packwood House where we saw many walkers basking in the sun.
Next stop the Lapwoth canal junction where we were able to listen to the history of the canal through "wind up speakers".

A short ride along the Stratford canal found us in the Tom o The Wood Pub for lunch.

On the way back to Berkswell we passed the moated house at Baddersly Clinton which has been noted for a visit on a future ride.

3 new members, who joined us today, have offered to arrange the next Sunday Origami ride, which will be on the 18th March 2007. We will post the details on the website as soon as it has been finalised.

Next Origami ride will start from Hagley on the Saturday10th Feb 2007.

Invite to Triennial Daffodil Rides

Ross-on-Wye & District Cycle Club, (assisted by Ledbury CTC and Royal Forest of Dean Cycling Club), are inviting all comers to join them for their Triennial Daffodil Rides. on 24th & 25th March 2007.

Camping is available at the HQ at Walford Village Hall, where caravans, motor homes and tents can be accommodated. Meals provided except for breakfast.

Other accommodation is available at the youth hostel in Welsh Bicknor which will be open. Info re B&Bs can be supplied.

We have been approached by some folding bike enthusiasts who, due work commitments, have been unable to join us on our Saturday Origami rides. In order to give them the opportunity to ride with us we are running a ride on Sunday the 28th Jan 2007. The event is designed to complement the Saturday programme and all riders on any bike are welcome to join us.
We will be starting from Berkswell Railway Station (which, confusingly, is actually in Balsall Common, South of Birmingham) at 11.00 on Sunday 28th Jan 2007 with a ride length of 20 miles approx, passing through Packwood House Gardens. More details to follow once we have finalised the event details.
Remember all riders with an interest in folding, separable and small wheel bikes are welcome to join us.

We plan to follow Sustrans Route 41 from Rugby to Draycote. A short section of the route is prone to mud in wet weather but we have identified an alternative route. The ride length can be varied to suit the weather and riders by adding extra laps of the scenic reservoir. The minimum length will 15 miles.
Lunch will be at the new visitors centre at Draycote Water. The restaurant offers a good choice of food from sandwiches and soup to hot meals http://www.stwater.co.uk/server.php?show=nav.5772
On our return to Rugby all are welcome at Weatherspoons for refreshments hot drinks and ales. The Rupert Brooke, 8-10 Castle Street, Rugby, Warwickshire.

Trains -Mike has kindly researched trains on the day: "Just been checking trains to Rugby for the Origami Ride. It seems that some (not all) trains out of New Street are being replaced with buses that day, so as well to check if anyone is planning to travel by rail."
Parking -There is a British Rail Car Park in front of the station in Railway Terrace. £6.00 for 24 hours. The local roads near the station all appear to be short stay and / or permit holders only. There is a retail park north of the station, please check the regulations prior to parking. The November Origami Ride on Saturday 11th November will start from Derby Railway Station(Railway Terrace, Derby DE1 2RY)

All riders and bikes welcome on this slow and friendly ride, a good chance for you to learn more about the many folding bikes available to buy now

November 11th- The November Origami Ride on Saturday 11th November will start from Derby Railway Station(Railway Terrace, Derby DE1 2RY) car park (on the left as you exit the station) by platform 1 exit and bike racks. NB this is not a public car park. Please refer to the Derby Council parking information website and a pdf map showing the location and cost of the car parks in the area. Breakfast can be purchased at the “Uppercrust Café” in the station foyer.

We will leave at 11.02 (following a 2 minute silence) and will follow the traffic free sustrans route 6 (Cloud Trail) heading south out of Derby towards the village of Worthington. The total distance will be dependant on both the group and weather but will be no more than 30 miles.
Lunch will be at a public house near Worthington.

It is planned to return to Derby before dusk, where riders will be free bid farewell in the “Brunswick Inn – A True Ale House and Brewery” which serves coffee snacks and of course real ale.

This ride is suitable for Trikes with only 2 barriers along the route, which will be easy for the group to overcome.
