Little wings and legs (big butt and gut). This is the bird that sits on the ledge next to my desk at work.

I would love to tell you that all my weight has magically dropped off and I don't have to work at it any more. It wouldn't be true but I would love to tell you that anyway.

Here's my game plan:

1. Write down everything that goes into my mouth. I do well when I actually do this. It's the days that forget to do that and forget that calories add up quickly when I'm not conscious of what goes into it.

2. STOP EATING AFTER 7 pm. ( Again, very effective if I actually observe this rule!)

3. Limit Sweets, breads, ice cream, cheese, and peanut butter. ( Again, very effective if I actually do it. Even a little of the above is enough to sabotage my dietary efforts.)

4. Go to bed earlier. ( Grazing at night is killing my progress!)

5. Eat much slower, stop frequently, stop before I'm full. (Mr. Wonderful eats quickly and I need to stop trying to keep up with him. I'm learning to take food with me if we are on the road and which food I can order if we are eating out.)

6. Get more Active. ( I set my timer now and get up and move around at least every half hour, even if it's only to dance around the kitchen or my office.)

7. Wear my pedometer and shoot for a goal of 10,000 steps. Statistics show that people who wear a pedometer average at least 2000 more steps than those that don't. I think it makes you more conscious to move around.

8. Dig out my exercise tapes and do them at least 3 times a week. ( Again, only effective if I actually do them. Leslie Sansone was looking at me very accusingly ....or was that my imagination?)

9. Make up turkey-veggie chili and have it available for snacking. It's good, hot, filling, lots of veggies and fiber. I think you spend more calories digesting it than you take in. But I need to do all the cooking on the weekend when I have more time.

10. Limit computer or TV time. I can easily get caught up and forget all my good intentions.

My new goal is to be below 200 pounds by my birthday .....November 19th

Daisy Dilemma: Can I do this? YES I CAN....with God, nothing is impossible.

Easter Parade Here I Come!

Easter hat parades got their start in New York City in the mid-1800s, when the lower and middle class would watch a spectacle of cosmopolitan socialites drifting down the avenue after Easter church services. The elite wore their Sunday best, including bonnets, top hats and chapeaus of all styles, colors and embellishments, and began a tradition known as the Easter parade. The tradition was immortalized in the movie "Easter Parade" with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire, and today, people from all walks of life stroll down fifth Avenue on Easter wearing flamboyant hat creations.

This Daisy would give up chocolate Easter bunnies and all the goodies of the Easter Basket to go. I'm soon to be the lightest I've been in over 20 years! I told Mr. Wonderful when that magic number appears on the scale I expect a whole York peppermint patty all to my self. (We usually split one!)

I've asked Joyce (she sorts clothes at the mission) to start looking for some size 18's for me. She knows me well and usually picks out just exactly what I would choose. It's nice not to have to run out and invest in a new wardrobe especially if I don't plan on being this size for long.

I've been really watching what goes in my mouth. We have been doing a lot of stir fry lately. I'm totally in love with the new steamed veggies that you can pull from the freezer and throw into the microwave. They taste just as good as fresh and are quick and easy after working all day.

I'm totally in love with Sugar Free Jello. Have you tried the Gogi Berry? It's really good.

Eating with chopped sticks has helped too. I'm not very good with them so it really slows down my food consumption. Since starting to use them I've not had any incidents of feeling choked . (Of course it could be because I given up bread and how much rice can you pick up with chop sticks?)

I've been trying to get 10,000 steps in a day so I'm wearing a pedometer. They say you can't tell a book by it's cover but I am attracted to books with french pastry on the cover.

Yes, dear reader, just like Pavlov's dogs I begin to drool at the mere thought of french pastries so of course I was a goner when I saw this book at the library. I checked it out and was delightfully surprised that I enjoyed it so much.

The story is about a 20 something girl who moves to France to attend a Culinary school and become a pastry chef. It deals with many issues, such as loneliness, uncertainty, as well as adapting to a foreign culture .

What I especially liked about this book is the author's perspective of "Where is God in all of this?" Lexi, finds a church that has services in English and reaches out to French speaking people with an offer to learn and practice English as a way to get better jobs.

One thing the heroine learns is that "food taste better when you are hungry." Lexi is away from her friends, family and culture and discovers that God can be heard more clearly when He is all that is left. The book was entertaining as well as uplifting. (not to mention .....some killer reciepes!)

Give Me Chocolate and No on gets hurt!

Exactly one year ago I had lap-band surgery. Now 55 pounds later I can say it was worth it. I still struggle with my weight and will always have to be diligent in making wise choices.

Before I had the surgery I was told that this surgery is a tool. It helps but you still have to do the work . I still have to drag my body around and make it exercise.

Eating is a challenge. I am cooking more than I ever have. My capacity is limited but I still can eat things that are fattening (I usually pay a price for it but you know me....I always have to push the limits.)

Mr. Wonderful gave me Ghiradeli Intense Dark Chocolate. It is full of antioxidants and better for you. It's actually on the flat belly diet. As you can see....I'm a little over anxious to dig in!

I did pretty well at my mom's house. Of course she didn't listen and made our favorite dishes. I did eat them but had small portions. I haven't weighed because I'm in denial right now. It was a good visit though and she is in good spirits.

So today is Monday.....My traditional day for getting back to the diet. So here's to the next 55 pounds and hopefully more.

Daisy Dilemma: What day of the week do you usually start your diet?

The saga continues.....

Oh No! How come every time you think you've come across something really good some body ( Mr. Wonderful) has to squash it?

Mr. Wonderful gave me several websites and even printed them out that says the Flat Belly Diet is a scam.

The reasons listed were :

1. The book cost 31.95 ( I bought Woman's World at the grocery store for $1.79)

2. One author claimed, "We have found the cure for belly fat." ( I agree that this is a red flag statement, anything that sounds too good to be true usually is.)

3. No exercise needed ( but highly recommended). ( always read the fine print.)

4. The basic diet is one of calorie restriction. ( well, duh? That's why it is called a diet!)

5. Every meal should have a MUFA (MonoUnsaturatedFattyAcid). This is a dead give away for a scam because it's the part where they put in the "magic" ( MUFA's are part of the so-called good fats. They come in 5 groups...certain nuts, certain oils, seeds, olives, avocodos, and dark chocolate. These foods are also found in the Mediterranean diet what has long been known to provide health benefits.

6. The diet alleges to hone in on belly fat. If you restrict your diet you will lose weight and some of it will come off your belly as well as other parts of your body. ( All I know is that I've lost 4 pounds and 2 inches off my belly and no where else.)

Over all there was nothing dangerous or bad about the diet. Everyone agrees restricted calories, exercise and good fats are healthy. No food group is restricted such as breads or fruits in low carb diets.

Bear in mind.....It seems to be working for me. I'm not hungry, I've had a small measure of success already, we are incorporating more vegetables in our diet and stir frying is fun, easy and tasty. The coconut oil is available locally, and any diet that tells me I need to eat two muffins a day is a winner in my book. We are also eating with chopped sticks . It gives the meal a little extra challenge and since I'm not good with chopsticks it certainly slows down my eating. So far it's all good. I'll keep you posted .

I'm melting.....

I'm melting, melting.....ok, so maybe not as fast as I would like but I've lost an inch from my waist and so has Mr. Wonderful. I thought it was pretty good considering we've only been on this diet (Flat belly Diet) since Sunday.

I lost 4 pounds instantly. Mr. Wonderful conveniently forgot to weigh himself before we started. I pretty much stick close to the diet. He has modified it a great deal but does a lot of loading, lifting and physical work so burns the extra calories.

We've been having egg beaters with cheese in the morning using the coconut oil for cooking. Since we go through 4 muffins a day I baked two dozen yesterday just to get us through the weekend. In the evening I've been stir frying with the coconut oil. So it's going really well. We are eating better than we normally do and already seeing results. I'm a happy camper!

The spoiler will be this weekend. We are going to see my mom so it will be interesting to see how close we can stick to it and not be offensive to my mom.

Sigh, Raise your right hand and repeat: I will not eat things that will hamper my weight loss just to make my momma happy!

Daisy Dilemma: Other than" just say no" do you have any suggestions for turning down "your very favorite, I made it just for you thing?"

It's Simple!

Sounds like good advice. How come everything that taste good is usually bad for you. Seems like I've been gaining and losing the same 4 pounds for weeks now. I lose it.....indulge....gain it back....work really hard...lose it... indulge....gain it back.....do you see a pattern here?

Seems I'm always looking (wishing) for a way to lose weight without any effort on my part. I know it won't happen but I'm the eternal optimist.

My "latest fad" is coconut oil. The Columbia University Flat-belly diet. According to Dr. Oz belly fat is really bad for you and can lead to heart attacks, strokes, etc. The diet is 1500 calories a day and four belly-flattening teaspoons of coconut oil.

Breakfast: 1 egg scrambled with 1 Tbs. low-fat cheese, 1 cup berries, 1 Belly Flattening Muffin or 1 apple with1 Tbs peanut butter, 1 cup lite yogurt, 1 belly flattening muffin or
1 cup fat free milk, 1 banana, 1 belly flattening muffin.

Morning Snack: 1 Super belly flattening muffin

Lunch: 1/2 can water packed tuna, 1/4 cup diced vegetables, 1 Tbs lite Mayo, 1 slice Fat-free cheese, 1 whole wheat pita, 3/4 cup grapes or

2/3 cup cooked whole wheat pasta, 1/4 cup each sliced carrots, bell peppers, celery, and low-fat cheese, 2 Tbs lite dressing , 1 pear or

2 oz lean deli meat, 1 diced hard boiled egg, 1/4 cup low fat cheese, 3 cups salad, 2 Tbs lite dressing, 4 whole-grain crackers or 1/2 whole-wheat pita

Dinner: 3 Oz skinless chicken breast chucks, 1-2 cups frozen Asian -style veggies and 1 tsp garlic stir-fried in 2-3 Tbs. low sodium soy sauce with 2 tsp. coconut oil, 3/4 cup brown rice. or

3 oz lean steak, 1 Tbs Worcestershire sauce, 1 cup sliced mushrooms sauteed in 1 tsp coconut oil, 1 small baked sweet potato, 1 tsp coconut oil, 1 cup green beans. or

6 oz cod or flounder broiled with 1 tsp. coconut oil and seasoning to taste, 3/4 cup brown rice or boiled potato with 1 tsp coconut oil and 1 Tbs.Parmesan, 1 cup steamed broccoli

Snack: choose one daily
2 Tbs raisins, 8 almonds, 8 tiny pretzel twists or
1/2 cup fat-free cottage cheese, 1/2 cup berries, 1 Tbs. sunflower seeds or
2/3 coup light yogurt, 1/3 chopped fruit, 2 tbs low-fat granola

Taken from Woman's World Front Page Feb.16

"Discover the little-known cooking oil that Melts 6 pounds and 3 inches of belly fat a week! Use it instead of olive oil or vegetable oil ....and lose up to 130 pounds"

Super Belly Flattening Muffins:

1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup sugar
1 Tbs. baking powder
1/2 cup raisins
1 cup fat-free milk
1/4 cup melted coconut oil
1 egg lightly beaten
1 tsp. vanilla

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Mist muffin tin with cooking spray. In a large bowl, mix flour, oatmeal, sugar, baking powder and raisins. In small bowl, blend milk, oil, egg and vanilla. Add to dry ingredients;stir until just moistened. Fill 12 muffin cups almost full. Bake 18 to 20 minutes. Cool on wire rack 5 minutes. Remove from pan

Make 'em from a mix

Start with a fat-free mix that makes 12 muffins, such as Krsteaz Fat-free Cranberry-Orange Muffins. Prepare batter according to package instructions, then stir in an extra 1/4 cup melted coconut oil.

What the heck....I started it yesterday and lost the 4 pounds I gained. It doesn't taste bad, I like a diet that say you must eat 2 muffins a day! Supposedly it suppose to help you store less fat, burn extra calories, target you tummy flab and feel less hungry.

My grocery store carries coconut oil so I don't have to mail order it. Why not try.

Mr. Wonderful saw a young man at church the other day with a very large belly. He looked at me and said, "Don't ever let me get like that." So....he is on the same diet with moderation. He even let me measure his waist so we'll see if it works.

Daisy Dilemma: If it's too good to be true would you try it?

Woo Hoo....finally got it right

Two days in a row that Leslie and I did our walk. Ok, so I'm into small goals. I actually went to sleep earlier last night and got up in time to do my two mile walk with Leslie before we headed out the door to work at the mission.

We had a group of ladies that boxed clothing till about 1 p.m. I actually got my 10,000 steps in and made good choices.

I had a serious talk with Mr. Wonderful. My nature is to be a people pleaser and I've been trying to work around his schedule rather than what is the best for me. It takes me a good 30 minutes to eat a very simple small meal. If I rush it, I get chocked or feel horrible for a good hour after wards. He gulps down a whole meal in 5 minutes or less some times and is out the door to another activity. I can no longer do that.....so I told him maybe that's why God gave us two cars (so he doesn't have to wait on me) . He says he understands but I'm sure he doesn't. So I am totally being selfish from here on out. If I'm late, I'm late and he can go on ahead.

I wrote down all my eating in a food diary, wrote down my exercise routine, got all my vitamins, Calcium and supplements in as well as got all my liquids down. We will see if it has any impact on the scale now.

This is me going to bed before 11pm.

Daisy Dilemma: Is this the start of a new habit or merely a flux?

The walking continues....

Just finished a two mile walk with Leslie. She has a new video out now that targets Hips and Thighs. Right in line with my "Lose your behind in 2009" goals. Not only is it broken down into a 2 mile walk but also has 23 minutes of toning with resistant bands included on the video.

This particular video is just Leslie without a class of people behind her. I actually liked it better because it's almost like having a personal trainer one on one.

I'm trying to get in 10,000 steps in each day. I usually don't make it except on the days I walk with Leslie. I really need to be more disciplined and get up earlier so I can get the walk in before we leave for the mission. By the time we get home at night I just want to curl up in my favorite chair and relax.

I also need to drink more. I can't eat and drink at the same time so I forget to drink. I know that sound lame but it is true. Also I don't want to go to the bathroom at the Mission because it is not heated and sitting on a cold commode is really uncomfortable and it takes me a long time to warm up again.

I know I need to make careful choices of what I eat and drink and I need to move more.

Daisy Dilemma: If I already know what I'm supposed to be doing, why don't I just do it?

Lose Your Behind in 2009

I'm home and I'm ready to get serious about exercise and watching what I eat. I didn't gain any weight over Christmas but I certainly didn't lose any either. I ate pretty much what I wanted .....but definitely not as much!

The Christmas cookies, pies, and goodies have all been consumed and the left over Chocolate has been hidden in the freezer where it is at least out of sight.

I got to thinking the other day that our guest room is only used three or four times a year so we have decided to take the bed down and use it for our exercise equipment. It can be quickly converted back to a bedroom whenever we need it but I am pretty sure we would use the room more if it had the exercise bike, mini trampoline, and DVD player and TV for exercise videos. I can use the dresser to store exercise videos, hand weights, and stretch bands and can walk with Leslie in there minus all the furniture that is in the living room. Mr. Wonderful thinks it's a good idea for now too.

I saw Ricard Simmons on a morning news program while I was in New York. He was on a campaign against childhood obesity. He is 60 years old now and "Lose your behind in 2009" was his slogan. I thought it was a good one to incorporate into my diet plan.

I keep waiting for my behind to fall off but looks like I'll actually have to work to get it to go away. I bought some new exercise videos today for some more variety. One is a Leslie Simmons tape with a two mile walk along with 21 minutes of lower body toning. So here's to having a smaller behind in 2009!

Daisy Dilemma: What are your health goals for the new year?

All that and Chocolate Cake too!

What cool candles.....spiral ones! Who knew that
there would be a chocolate cake in my future?
Yes, it is a well documented fact that I love cake!
I settled for half a brownie for lunch thinking that it would be my birthday dessert.

I was waiting all day for Melli to come.....I even woke up several times during the night cause I was so excited about her arrival. When she called at 11 a.m. my first question was...."Why aren't you in my drive way?" (not that I'm demanding or excited).

I would love to tell you that I didn't overeat at all...but it wouldn't be true. However, there is only so much over eating I can do now days. I probably didn't make the best choices but I figured that my birthday only happens once a year. Red Lobster was divine! Charlie and I shared a meal and the appetizers were yummy!

I've decided that friendship is so much better than anything on a plate. Thanks Melli for coming to see me and making my birthday really special.

Daisy dilemma: Do you like to be surprised or would you rather relish the anticipation of an event?

Count down to my birthday.....

<img src="http://lookup.avatars.yahoo.com/ewimages?enc=2ynjhkFFScE9bweDDWAaZ_6UapZxUw--&size=large&type=jpg" alt="Yahoo! We had a skiff of snow on the car this morning as we headed out to the mission. My office is not heated other than a plug in heater so I'm actually looking more like "the abdominal" snowman with lots of layers and a hat on.

My birthday is tomorrow. I got a poster with lots of cute Oscar pictures from Suzy. It says Diva's Little Man. I have it up on my bulletin board at work with all my other pictures. I should put up a sign that says "Ask me about my grand babies!" But then again with all my gallery of pictures it probably already says that without the actual words.

Not much going on here today. My cooking episode was a great success. I may have to try that again next week.

Daisy Dilemma: What do you do when you don't have the technical ability to use what you want for your birthday?

Still wishing.....

I saw this over at Sandy's and wondered if this is what my cats go through. Probably not since Charlie is the one that usually feeds them in the morning.

I keep waiting for my rear to fall off. My sister lost her butt really quickly.....I keep wondering if I'll wake me up one day and my pants will fall down as I won't have hips to hold them up.

Right now it seems to be just wishful thinking

I started exercising again.....I walked two miles with Leslie. I was impressed how much easier it was to walk and exercise now than it used to be.

Today was spent cooking. I made a weeks worth of food so at least I know what I can eat and it's pre-made.

Charlie got me a 4 inch cake for my birthday. I already ate it.....it was good. So much for my cake obsession till next year.

Daisy Dilemna: Do you have a food you obcess about?

Shopping in my Attic

Well, it's official it's in the 20's today so my summer clothes have got to go. I boxed them all up never to return to me again. By next summer they will be way to big and there's no need to haul them up to the attic any more.

I went shopping in my attic this morning. I have several sizes of clothes upstairs including really nice clothing that my sister gave me after her surgery. I tried them on and was surprised that several were way too big too. Hey, that never happened before! I have hung on to way too many clothes so tried things on this morning and if I'm not in love with the way it looks on me it's been packed off to the mission. I'd rather have a few clothes that fit well and look good than a whole closet full on items I don't like.

I've kept a few items that are the next size down within easy reach so I can check on my progress. I'm packing my bags for New York while I go through all these clothes. I'm leaving in the morning to spend time with my daughter and new grandson.

I'm also taking my laptop so I'll be sure to post pictures.

Daisy Dilemma: Have you ever saved clothes thinking you'll wear them again when you lose a few pounds and then found out that you don't like the outfit once you can wear it again?

Soup-er

As the fall weather turns cooler I've been turning to soup to warm me up at lunch time. I work in an area that is not heated well so I'm always cold.

I made some vegetable chilli and found some really good soup from V8 that are vegetable based. It helps with getting enough fluids too. Since it usually makes a cup, I share it with Mr. Wonderful. Soup and a sandwich goes over pretty well for my hardworking guy.

Our food bills have been cut in half since my capacity is so limited and since I started cooking casseroles and putting them up in individual portions. I'm making up Italian sausage and red rice and beans while I'm gone.

I've been eating a pack of peanut butter crackers with my soup to get in my protein. So far it has worked out well and I look forward to something hot at noon.

Daisy Dilemma: Do you remember the book "Stone Soup"? I wonder if that concept would work well with a small group dinner? Just a thought!

Great Discoveries that I have made

Alright....so some of the discoveries that I made recently maybe weren't brilliant and certainly wouldn't win me a Nobel Peace Prize but they have been life changing for me.

These are some of my diet discoveries:

Eat only things that you really like....don't waste the calories on something that doesn't satisfy your taste buds.

2. The first two bites of a dessert are the best and the rest will not satisfy you nearly as much as the first two. Always stop wanting more.

3. Approach food reverently, it is a gift from God not to carelessly consumed without thought.

4. Eat slowly, put you fork down in between bites, enjoy the conversation around you.

5. Avoid bread, pasta, and noodles and rice.

6. Drink slowly also.

7. Don't keep foods that are high in calories (such as candy, chocolate, nuts ) within sight or easy reach. It's too easy to fill up on them and not get in your protein.

8. Carry something to drink to work with you and work on it all day. It will keep you hydrated and full.

9. Stop before you are full. You can always eat more later. Overfilling is painful and causes great distress.

10. Know the difference in "head hunger" and physical hunger.

Daisy Dilemma: Does anyone else find candy corn addicting?

Good-bye fast food

On our recent trip to Alabama I ran into trouble trying to come up with something that I can actually eat. Any thing with a bun or bread is out. That also includes pasta and rice and of course pizza.

I had a child's plate of grilled chicken fingers and applesauce and actually got chocked on it. I'm pretty sure it was because I was really hungry and ate it too quickly but I paid for my indiscretion for several hours afterward.

I'm having to relearn a number of lessons. I am finding out that I need to be very deliberate in my choices and slow way down when I eat. Going out to eat is really more scary now and not the treat it once was. I have a hard time with salads too.

Daisy Dilemma: Who knew that going out to dinner would be scarier than Halloweeen?

Fianl Adjustment.....

Ok, that's exactly where I am.....and this cartoon even looks like me (how sad is that!) Friday I made the trek over to Charlottesville to see my doctor and make another lap band adjustment.

I had talked with my sister who had the procedure done about 2 years ago and compared notes with her as to what she can eat without problems and realized that I was able to eat much more.

Not any more. I really think I am where I'm supposed to be now. I can eat a half cup and be totally satisfied for four hours or more. I'm having trouble getting all my liquids in as you can't eat and drink at the same time.

I'm eating much slower and stopping much sooner than ever before. I have had several episodes of choking which is not pleasant at all.

I really think I'm hard headed. If I know what my limits are I'll stay with them rather than try to push the limit and be physically ill. I've lost four pound since Friday....it's really nice to see the scale going in the right direction now.

My mom and sister are coming tomorrow and Thursday we go on a road trip to Alabama. I've already got my meals planned and even got some meals frozen for when we get back. I finally think I'm on the right track now. Thank you God!

Daisy Dilemma: Life would be so much easier if I wasn't so hard headed!

10 Foods that make me happy...

10 Foods that make me happy!

1.
