Anything man made that can/once flew. Flying has always fascinated me. My very first desire for "what I wanted to be when I grew up" was to be a pilot in the RAF. My hopes were dashed when at the age of 7 I found that I needed glasses.... less than 20/20 vision disbars you.
One day this set will split into lighter & heavier than air sets.

Statue of the Fallen Angel, Retiro Park (Madrid, Spain)

The Fallen Angel is "the only statue in the world dedicated to the devil and it's located in the heart of the Retiro Park, Madrid, Spain. The Fallen Angel was erected in 1874 under the initiative of Duke Fernán Núñez and sculpted by the Madrilenian sculptor Ricardo Bellver.
The protests from his contemporary Madrilenians, who were scandalized by the idea of a monument being erected to Satan, felt on deaf ears and the daring Duke donated the sum of 11,000 Duros (some 830 €) to carry out the project. The maneuvers from the most obstinated sectors to abort the project were useless. Only a few months later, on 23rd October, the statue of the Fallen Angel was inaugurated"

International Literacy Day : Books For Cameroon

"On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally".

This is scary: "Some 774 million adults lack minimum literacy skills; one in five adults is still not literate and two-thirds of them are women; 72.1 million children are out-of-school and many more attend irregularly or drop out."

"September 8 was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. It was first celebrated in 1966. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally. Celebrations take place around the world." [Bloggersunite]

Wendy Lee has kindly asked to write a post about her Books for Cameroon project in honor of International Literacy Day. I believe I can help her cause by directing my friends attention to this pressing matter. Wendy is a Peace Corps volunteer serving in Cameroon, West Africa.

Books For Cameroon | Peace Corps - is aiming to bring 30 bilingual (French & English) libraries throughout regions of Cameroon.

"Participating schools will incorporate the donated books into the teaching curriculum and devise a plan to encourage and instill a love for reading among students. Volunteers will monitor the functionality of the libraries after the books are delivered to ensure effective usage."

"Reading is the gateway to knowledge and often the access to such knowledge is taken for granted. In Cameroon, students thirst for knowledge yet many schools are not equipped with a functioning library. The Books for Cameroon project will establish a library in 25 schools and benefit over 20,000 students. The schools will range from primary to high schools; some already have an existing library in need of improvement, others simply have a room waiting to be filled with books."

By the end of next year the Palace of Soviets will be ready for the future "World Revolution of the World Proletariat." Monday, Dec. 14, 1931 [Time]

The Palace of the Soviets was planned as a monument to Socialism and Congress hall. If built it would have been taller than the Empire State Building in New York. That never happened, but it would have made for an impressive monument.

The foundations were used in the restoration of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.

Carlos Barahona Possollo: Iconographic Genius

I stumbled upon Barahona Posollo's work thanks to Kimber's post on friendfeed.

From his website:

Born in Lisbon in 1967

BA in painting from Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon with a rating of 18/20. In 1995 he taught in the school as an assistant university invited. In 1995 he taught in the school as an assistant university invited. He studied Architecture at the Technical University of Lisbon from 1986 to 1989. Collaborated with the post of Portugal in the production of documents for the issuing of stamps, especially the series to commemorate the 5th Centenary of the Voyage of Vasco de Gama. Collaborated in the first nine numbers of the Portuguese edition of National Geographic Magazine collaborated in the first nine numbers of the Portuguese edition of National Geographic Magazine

His paintings are divided into several collections, including most importantly the Museum of Setubal, Banco de Portugal and CTT.

I absolutely love Possollo's use of mythical themes and erotic imagery. His symbolism is uncommon and yet I found it so appealing. All the references to death and libido struck a chord with me, and I guess it all goes back to my obsession with Antiquity, Eros and the Afterlife.
