Which Cartridge Do I Change?

A useful tip this, obvious if you know it, a puzzle if you do not. A customer came in this morning to buy some compatible printer cartridges for her Epson Printer. The lady has spent most of her life in office type environments using all manner of printers and copiers, so I naturally assumed that she knew how to change the ink cartridges in her printer. The danger of assumption!

The lady had changed one inkjet cartridge and still the printer would not print, it still had the red light flashing to say it needed a new ink cartridge fitting. This is where my assumption theory went right out of the window. The lady asked me "I have changed the black ink cartridge, so how do I know which colour cartridge to change?"

The answer is this; on all Epson inkjet printers if you lift up the cover to uncover the ink cartridges you will see at some point a plastic arrow shaped moulding which sticks out about 5/10mm from the casing of the printer. With the lid up on your printer press the flashing red light button (the one that tells you it needs a cartridge changing), and the cartridge carrier will move to the opposite side of the machine.

The cartridge carrier is the bit of the printer that has all the ink cartridges in it. The carrier will stop with the cartridge that needs changing opposite the plastic arrow shaped moulding. The arrow will point at the empty inkjet cartridge, once the carrier has stopped press the red light button again and it will move the carrier to a position where you can remove the empty inkjet cartridge and fit a full replacement.

So that is it! How to tell which cartridge needs changing if you have to change more than one at the same time. It sounds a bit like my luck some times to have several cartridges run out at once.

Do You Have a Faithfull Old Printer?

The title of this blog asks a question that I suspect many of use can answer yes to. A printer be it Inkjet or laser purchased 5 years or more ago seems to have been much more robustly built than the ones we buy today.

May be I am showing my age, but it grieves me to find I cannot use a perfectly good piece of equipment because the manufacturers have decided no to support it any more.

I am often contacted by people looking for cartridges for older printers that no one else can/is willing supply cartridges for. We cannot always help the enquirer, but often we can, over the years we have a stock of older type laser and inkjet cartridges which I sell out for nominal sums. It clears my racking and helps some one out; a case in point is 5 Lexmark colour toner cartridges 10B042k and M. Obviously black and magenta. A lady called looking for these cartridges and bought 4 black and 2 magenta for £15.00 each plus £6.50 delivery, If I remember correctly she said she had been quoted over £100.00 each, if they could be found.

A Good Tip To Save All-round

I read about his the other day and it seems sense so I thought I would post a blog on it, pass on the good word.

We all have offices at work or home that are full of electrical machines/devices. It is part of the price we pay for living in the technology driven age we do, and they all have 2 things in common. They all cost money to buy and they all use electricity to run themselves. A thing I must admit I take pretty much for granted, how ever having just paid my last electricity bill it occurred to me that an amount electricity could be saved by purchasing a multi functional machine. In other words instead of having a separate printer, separate copier, separate scanner etc, you can see where this is going!

Purchase an all in one, you only need one plug socket, and the amount of electricity used by having one machine on and ready is one third of the electricity used by having 3 machines plugged in and switched on all day for when they are needed. You also save on space needed for the machines, a noted point in my office.

You can also reduce the running cost of your office by only having to buy printer cartridges for one machine, and not separate cartridges for a printer and a copier. Ok I accept that in some offices one function is used by a lot of people at once and you need separate machines so people are not waiting to copy something or print it. But if like most business one machine will suffice, give it a try, save electricity and cartridge costs. Yes I know I had to get printer cartridges in some where, it is what I do!

A new product for us is Epson compatible printer ribbons for the printers used in MOT Stations. They now have to print MOT forms and our research so far tells me that all the MOT stations have been provided with a robust Epson Dot Matrix Printer.

We were asked by several motor trade customers if we could supply and now we can, we are only aware of one printer in use in mot stations at the moment and that is covered in the category of "MOT Printer Ribbons" on the home page of our web site.

A good tip this to save both temper and time, I know it sounds tedious and obvious but it works.

Next time you go to buy some printer cartridges make sure you have your exact printer model with you. A lady customer came in the other day to buy some cartridges and was not sure which printer model she had. So after looking on her account we surmised which of her 2 printers the cartridges were for. She paid for her printer cartridges, got a free bar of chocolate (which we were giving away as a promotion) and drove off, to Manchester.

I got a phone call the next day "they are not correct printer cartridges". The lady had purchased cartridges for her daughter's printer and not her own, a very similar model.

The end result was my customer appeared a couple of days later with some well travelled printer cartridges and we sent her daughter the correct printer cartridges to Manchester in the post. If only I had written the printer model down! She said (men do this too I might add).

So there is now a lady driving around Lincolnshire with a slip of paper in her purse, written upon which are two models of printer. One labelled DAUGHTER and one labelled MINE.

Powerful things slips of paper when it comes to saving time and temper, a good case of the pen is mightier than the printer cartridge!

Do not always blame the cartridge for poor pictures

Hello everybody out there, long time no blog I know. Things have been getting interesting in business in general and my attention has been diverted elsewhere. But know I am back with more tips, and useful? Information to solve your problems and niggles with regards to printing and cartridges.

My first entry of this year is I feel "a cracker", one of these occurrences that happen and few can explain. This is a story told to me by a customer who is a self-admitted IT GEEK and makes his living repairing computers for his sins (his words not mine).

A customers PC fried its motherboard so a new board was fitted (an old stock one that was age related to the customers PC). Which in turn meant that he didn't even have to update Windows 2000 or reactivate Adobe Photoshop, the configurations were so similar. All that needed doing was to fit some new drivers and tidy things up within the operating system.

Things then got interesting when his customer tried to print some photos off his PC. The picture quality was awful and produced pictures with streaks in them. To all intent and purpose a classic case of print heads needing cleaning. They were cleaned 3 times; more pictures printed and still the same result. So the cartridges were changed (his customer is supplied with our compatible cartridges) no difference.

So after cleaning the print heads and replacing the ink cartridges with no apparent improvement it looked like a printer problem. So another printer was installed on the pc, and still it gave the same problem of streaky photos. At his point tea leaves were read, chicken bones were rolled and a few ideas talked through. They then thought is it a software problem? Try printing from the picture window instead of through your photo editor my customer suggested, it didn’t make any difference.

The next step was to reinstall all of the printer drivers, still no difference. So after the conducting the age old cure all guarantee. Several pints of real ale and a good nights sleep! The conclusion was it must be a hard ware problem, “I think” said Richard.

His thoughts went like this, everything else up to the pc has been systematically ruled out, and it takes a lot of memory to print A4 colour pictures. So is something not quite aligning with the new motherboard, we are after all mating old and new components.

The RAM was changed, the pc rebooted and presto perfect pictures again!

So the moral is, it is not always the obvious at fault, so I must learn not to jump to conclusions. I will write this out 500 times and remember it.

Brother LC900 Cartridge OR NOT!

Hi, its been a few weeks since my last post I admit but things have been getting very interesting business wise and you can only do so much in a day. However in the last few weeks some thing of interest has come to our attention with Brother Printers/Fax machines and all in ones.

If you use these cartridges you will know that the originals are about £12.00 plus vat each,our compatible retails at £5.99 plus vat . A Bit of a difference to put it mildly!However we have discovered that Brother have modified the base of this cartridge and added a plastic moulding plug to the bottom of the cartridge. The compatible does not have this moulding. This moulding we believe acts on a switch in new machines taking this cartridge, which allows them to work. If you have an older machine it still works but does not require the plastic moulding to activate anything and so is unnoticed. Hence this cartridge works in any machine that takes this cartridge. The compatible, which does not have this moulding, works sometimes in new machines and always in old machines.

So what are we doing you ask to solve this problem, so far we are building a list of new machines that do not like the compatible and are offering customers with these machines Original Brothercartridges at a really good price. This is until we can get a compatible with the plastic protrusion.

So if you have bought LC900 compatible cartridges and are using them in a newish (6 month plus old machine) and experiencing problems, contact your supplier or US to ask for a solution. We are swapping like for like with our customers as part of our no Quibble guarantee.
