Greetings folks,

There's a bit of news to share this time.

DUO SHOW -
Tammy and I have been working on a set of songs that we're about
to start doing in duo format. It's a blend of country, gospel, old-
style R&B stuff. If you've never heard Tammy sing you're in for a
treat- something special seems to happen when we sing together
and we've chosen and written these songs to build upon that
sound. There's a bunch of shows we'll be doing before we leave...

OFF TO SWEDEN FOR 2009-
....which is some of the other news. In January I'm heading off to
live in Sweden for all of 2009. Tammy is doing some study over
there so we'll be based in Uppsala and work on playing our way
around Europe and generally just having a blast. So, here's a list of

WAMI Song Of The Year nominations... and some shows

TWO WAMI NOMINATIONS
a quick missive to say that I've had TWO songs nominated in the
upcoming WAMI Song Of The Year competition - both from the
new album Now That The Horses Have Bolted.

band song 'The Father' has been nominated in the rock category
and the solo acoustic tune 'Iron Horse' has been nominated for the
blues'n'roots category. the awards are announced Oct 9th.

there's a site where you can here and vote for the most popular

to have a say yourself about what you like etc.

if you're a bit out of touch with the world of Simon London + the
Spirits, you may not know that we're about to release our new
double cd - Now That The Horses Have Bolted - due to hit the
stores in a few weeks.

Now That The Horses Have Bolted has both a rocking band cd and
an acoustic solo cd contained within its svelte and fancy artwork.
and those folks who've already lent us their ears are saying it's the
best collection of tunes we've offered up so far. which is obviously

iron horse tour

hey folks,

hope this finds you all well.

after a busy month since my trip to Melbourne in April, I'm heading
out the door again, this time for the big IRON HORSE tour through
June/July.

the tour takes its Iron Horse name from the lead track from the
forthcoming album - a double disc release with both a band and
solo cd. the band cd is all finished, the solo one is being mixed
and mastered in two weeks! finally.

so I've got dates in WA, VIC and TAS (first time to the apple isle)
so please come down and see me when I'm in your town.

if you're in Perth there's a swag of gigs coming up but my favourite
pick is the Clancy's show I'm doing with great Aus songwriter Neil
Murray (Good Light In Broome, My Island Home etc), which will be
a personal highlight. The Young & Jacksons gig in downtown
Melbourne should be good too, where I'm playing with Nick Barker.

so, I'll let you know when the new album lands, and in the
meantime, hope to see you at a show sometime soon.

Tim Keady's sister - Katie Keady is an award winning actress from
WA who is doing a solo play called 'Kids' Stuff' and it's bloody
good. We went along and were blown away - funny, gripping and
powerful. Season closes on the 29th, tix through BOCS for those of

back in the saddle....

it's been a while since being in the saddle but there are some solo
shows coming up this month in WA, both metro and country...

as part of the ongoing 'Hahn Solo' series of tuesday night shows.
other acts include 'Star', 'Lexi Keller' and 'Seve'. I play last (10:15?)

SAT 23rd - CAPE WINE BAR - Dunsborough
the best venue in dunsborough, an acoustic, free entry show that
starts before 9pm...

SUN 24th - OCCY'S BREWERY - Busselton
and then a sunday afternoon wind-down show at one of the newer
south-west breweries. again, acoustic and free entry from around
2pm

THURS 6th - LITTLE CREATURES LOFT - Fremantle
joining with melbourne's own rosie burgess as she tours in WA.
had the pleasure of playing with her in 2007 and she's well worthy
of you choosing to start your weekend early by coming down and
checking her out.

OTHER BITS & PIECES - original Spirits' drummer Matt Morcombe
graced the stage with us in Albany last weekend in a way that
made going back in time a refreshing thing to do. was thoroughly
enjoyable. we've still got a reams of recorded stuff we have to finish
off - I'm working on having a few releases out this year both band
and solo so we'll keep you posted. at least two east coast tours
are on the cards for 2008 - april and october - and a european tour
for june/july could happily coincide with the tour de france but we'll

notes from the road....

hello to all you good folks.

I thought I'd take a moment to regail you with a few updates from
my north american travels. I'm still in Canada now as I write with
one show left to play. knowing me this will probably be a lengthy
monologue. beware. if you're one of the more productive of the
species you better go do something else with the next ten minutes
of your life.

it's been an interesting couple of weeks.

I left Australia at the end of September to head to Canada to play
some shows over here with my buddy and Aussie expat Matt Irvin.
he's been based in New York and Winnipeg for the last eight
months and he was up for putting a small tour together.

leaving Australia wasn't without incident - the night before I was due
to fly I played Mojos in Fremantle but my car broke down (fuel
pump) and I spent the whole night waiting for mechanics and tow
truck drivers. anyways, a day later I was en route to Singapore. a
tardy booking had meant I needed to fly to Singapore, Los
Angeles, Toronto and then on to Winnipeg for the first show. don't
bother with getting out your atlas or google earth - suffice to say it
was a stupidly long way to get there.

half way there and the Aussie Rules Grand Final was due to start
while I was waiting in the LAX departure lounge. the sports bars
were full of tvs showing baseball so I dropped ten bucks on an
instant wireless connection to watch the first quarter on my laptop.
but nothing would stream so it was a play-by-play notation on the
AFL website of Geelong dominating the Kangas that sustained me.
after the boarding call, some faithful die-hards at home kept the
sms updates coming in while sitting in the plane delayed on the
runway. by the time I had to turn my phone off the score was
looking like a sure thing for Geelong. this would be a good omen for
the tour.

Matt met me as a weary and dehydrated specimen in Winnipeg
some 40 hours of flying later, but in good spirits.

after retrieving guitars unharmed, we tooled around town, saw the
sights and then headed out to watch a CFC football game - my first
- as the hometown Bombers dispensed with Hamilton in a close
game. american football takes some getting used to as the stop-
start plays mean your passion is by necessity a very measured
business but Matt's cousin Chuck had me oriented to the
strategies. after that finished I headed home and crashed out. it'd
been almost sixty hours without any real sleep and I was done.

we played Winnipeg on the Monday. the place was an 'Aussie'
style pub called the Billabong which was packed full of Matt's
relatives and I guy who was the spitting image of Kav Temperley
from Eskimo Joe. complete with the scarf. the gig went really well,
Matt delivered a killer 'home-town' set and the Winnipegians
seemed to like my tunes on the whole.

Tuesday we headed out of Winnipeg across the prairies in the
direction of Saskatoon. We got as far as Yorkton and then arose
the next morning and kept trucking.

the prairies are bloody incredible. the skies are vast, the land is
flat, the clouds are ever changing and there are colours that are too
vivid for words. I took about 300 photos in the first week and 250 of
them are of the changing skies. what's more is that many of the
shots look like I've used editing software to make them so vivid. but
that's just how it is out there. I chatted to locals about it and some
just shook my hand in a quiet knowing and the others probably
thought I was mad. but not everyone has the feeling that they're
driving through a Turner painting.

Saskatoon is a pretty little place (locals boast that it's the Paris of
the Prairies) with six large bridges running across a beautiful river.
the show went ok but it probably wasn't the best venue for what we
were doing. the next morning we headed for a place called the
Wanuskewin Park run by First Nation people - Cree - that was a
very powerful place. an historic camping area on tributary rivers
there were a bunch of former buffalo (bison) jumps, ceremonial
grounds, installations etc but most of all the place had a resonant
peace to it. we left there for Regina feeling charged and restored.

pulling in to Regina felt like pulling in to what I imagine a part of
Detroit or Michigan might be like. brown, industrial, harsh and
noisy. we stayed at the iconic Plains Hotel that we learnt later on
was the heart of the less salubrious area of town. the tattooed biker
(replete with gang colours) that gave me directions to our venue
was very cordial though as were the patrons of the hard core blues
club below when we loaded back in at 2am. the show went well
and the turn out was pretty respectable. the next morning someone
we'd met showed us around town a little before we decided to head
south.

I've always wanted to go to Montana. I can't explain it. perhaps it's
the romance of the open spaces or the horses or something but I've
always pledged I'd get there. now, with a few days hole in the
schedule it seemed like an ideal opportunity to duck below the
border and see it first hand. Matt, being the intrepid traveller that he
is, took little convincing and we headed towards the border.

beyond Moose Jaw we headed south and made it as far as
Assiniboia, a little farming town of hard drinkers, pick up trucks and
grain bins. we were warned earlier not to go there because it'd be
an 'indian town'. the fattened grain-fed white farmers that we found
there would have long sinced pushed any 'indians' out in to the
shadows beyond the wheat silos and the moon drenched paddocks
that ran for miles and miles and miles. and if they hadn't, the
110dB hard rock cover band doing soundcheck in the bar we
landed in would have been a handy fall-back position with enough
Creed and long haired guitar solos to drive anyone out of town. we
holed up there for the night, drank the local beer, played the local
pool rules and smiled at the pretty local girls with their local
boyfriends. it was a friendly enough place but one where you
watched your words to ensure no-one felt put out enough to want to
put you out of sorts any more. trading caps at the end of the night
with one of the harder drinking locals seemed like acceptance by
the time we stumbled out of there, watching out for the town's local
shiny blue sedan with the lights atop. we never saw it.

we spent most of the next day driving around the Badlands near
the border, watching the prairie plains take on a new undulation
with gulches and gullies and breakaways. we saw almost no-one
all day. a family of wolves ran in front of us and then up to the far
ridge as we looked on from the road's edge. it was just them and
us and a few distant horses.

crossing the border in to the US and Montana was easier than
anyone could have imagined. I get nervous any time I have to deal
with US officials and their collective inability to think for themselves
but after dealing with a pair of friendly homeland security folks I
was almost surprised when they didn't offer us a beer for the rest of
the trip. it was all very straightforward.

and then it was in to Montana. soft overcast skies and long and
gently rolling plains of unfenced wheatfield stubble that felt like
slow smooth breaths. we drove like this for hours. past the
abandoned St Marie, down towards Glasgow and on towards
Malta. after seeing wandering calves and grazing deer in the
peripheral throw of the headlights we got a cheap room in a
roadside motel from a very friendly middle aged lady. our first post-
border-crossing conversation with an American went something like
this:

"so where are you guys from?"

"Australia. we've driven down from Canada today"

"oh really? I couldn't tell with the accents. so you drove all that
way?"

"what, you mean did we drive from Canada? yeah sure, we crossed
the border this afternoon"

"no, I meant did you drive all the way from Australia? It must be a
long way to drive from there to here."

"we flew in to Canada".

"oh that's ok then. that'd be a long drive otherwise".

she was a lovely lady and ran a nice hotel with the best shower of
the trip. across the railway line we found a great little bar and a
counter meal and $2.50 premium beers and Montana was getting
better by the minute. a country band was setting up. the stetsons
were out in full force and the super friendly country folks were
buying beers with us round for round.

line of the tour - delivered by a forty-something stetson-wearing
man with a wry grin:

"I used to miss my ex.... but my aim's just getting better all the
time"

sand was thrown down on the floor for the dancers and the tightest
country band you might hear fired up. impressed by the telecaster-
weilding guitar gun in the corner I went over in their first break to
talk shop with him and chew the fat about guitars. a few bars in to
chatting he nodded, pulled out some chewing tobacco and said,

"so, you're the lead picker then are you?"

me not being the 'lead picker' meant that we obviously had a lot
less to talk about than I'd imagined and my cue to return to the bar
gracefully followed quickly.

the rest of the night was a pretty colourful affair but Matt and I
agreed easily upon a retreat to the motel when all the country
songs were sounding the same. we left the town in the morning
and headed further south and west to our destination of Whitefish,
Montana.

now that we're north of the border again, we're heading for a gig in
Kelowna, British Columbia tomorrow after having spent all day
being amazed by the Rockies. absolutely incredible. like a different
planet.

that's it from me for now. there's a guy on the television that Matt's
watching who is quoting from 2 Corinthians while a text prompt
says:
"Call Now for your FREE, LARGER, Miracle Spring Water"...

(capitalisation his). it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me
either but it sounds convincing. I got to go and get me some. he's
promising "a personal financial explosion!"

...a glorious day in Sydney. just drove up from the south coast of
NSW today - what a glorious part of the world.

heading back to Perth today to play the last metro show for the
solo WINTER TOUR - playing the MOON CAFE this wednesday
25th @ around 9pm. two dates remain then for that particular tour -
Denmark on the 4th Aug and Margaret River on the 5th Aug. In an
instance of beautiful synchronicity, I'm playing these last two dates
with Chris Edmondson - Spirits guitarist and partner in crime for
more years than anyone dare remember.

for the Bunbury folks, there's a show this Friday 27th @ the Prince
of Wales. It's free and it's with the band and it'll be a welcome
change to play with the fellas once again.

the WINTER TOUR has been just great. cold...as you might expect
- damn cold in fact - but there have been plenty of (if you'll forgive
me a cliche for the moment) heart-warming moments. family time
in newport and my little nephew room-mate, hanging with the
Backwells in the south, a string of great shows in Melbourne, the
Manly boatshed, retreating to French's Forest, the kind-hearted
folks of Nowra, the Bowlo and Jonno and Lana and that glorious
forgotten part of the world but a short drive from Sydney. my tired
and addled brain can't put much of a poetic bent on the words that
might bring the experience to life for you - sorry - but suffice to say
it was a great tour and particular thanks for those who were a part
of it.

scene since before I was born sharing his powerful music. whether
acapella field hollers or spirit-soaked melodies the over-used 'one of
a kind' cliche really takes its true meaning with him. he's heading
off to france to play festivals in europe so come down and catch
witness his music before he disappears north. he and I will both
play solo sets so it'll be acoustic and intimate and one not to miss!

Hey folks,

hope that this finds you well!

the band and I have been keeping pretty busy with our various
recordings both here and in melbourne. some great tunes are
evolving which you'll no doubt be hearing in th fullness of time.

but the new news is that we've got a gig in WA!

we're supporting melbourne band THE BOXCUTTERS on their
national tour at the ROSEMOUNT HOTEL this WEDNESDAY MAY
2ND. Doors open at 8, Stu Orchard is on first and then us and then
our long-travelling boxcutter friends. the door charge is cheap. $5 or
something like that.

this is the only perth metro band gig we've got scheduled for the
next few months. be great to see you there.

one show in an island of.... other stuff

Hey folks,

resting after 40 shows in the last three months! things are a little
quieter in the Spirits camp now, but here's a bit of news for you...

looking forward/looking back
the last gig we did in perth - ramble & the sleepers cd launch - was
a great way to wrap up an awesome few months of shows and
tours. if you weren't there, the night ended with the venue shutting
the power down on us whilst the audience kept demanding more...
the encore - sans power - had us sitting with the audience on the
chesterfield couches with Joel and Cam from the Rambles, Emily
Barker (over from the UK) and half the audience singing through a
(truly) acoustic number in a rousing show of voice. truly
memorable! big thanks to Ramble & the Sleepers.

picnic gig
we've got a one-off afternoon show we're doing for the Town of
Vincent next Sunday 25th March 3:30-5:30pm at Banks Reserve in
Mt Lawley. it's a 'bring a picnic' kind of arrangement and is free.
come down and find a bit of park and relax. I'll have the band with
me and we'll throw in some new tunes.

recording
while taking a break between tours, I've been recording some
overdubs for our new record - the one we started down in our
farmhouse hideaway - which will be out by August of this year.

Tim Stacey and I are also heading to Melbourne in April to take up
an offer from ThirtyMill Studios to do some free recording. ThirtyMill
studios gave us a call and offered us the time after hearing one of
our demos! we're pretty stoked about that. I've earmarked a bunch
of new songs that we'll start capturing there.

maybe see you at Banks Reserve... if not, we'll cross paths some
time soon. until then, follow your heart and do the things that make
you feel good!

before I head out the door to drive to Bunbury for tonight's gig, I just
wanted to fire off a quick email to you to let you know about a
coupla things....

WAMI gig - don't forget this Tuesday's special solo gig at the Swan
Hotel (upstairs) in Fremantle starts at 8 sharp, is FREE and is
being filmed and recorded. Please come down if you're in the area
and be part of a little bit of history...

RAMBLE & THE SLEEPERS - are a great Freo roots band and
they've asked us to play their CD launch - Thurs the 1st February -
and have put a great line-up together. It's also at the Swan Hotel
(upstairs) so pencil it in your diary now if you can.

I-TUNES - if you're an i-tunes type you might have noticed that the
Spirits' latest album - 'Highway State Of Mind' - has been hanging

note from the road...

Hey folks,

Matty and I are killing time in the departure lounge of the Sydney
airport awaiting the flight back to Perth at the end of a great tour.
Sixteen shows in four states, meeting some great people, staying
in some wonderful places and playing some fine venues has made
the whole journey so worthwhile. Hope you managed to catch a
show.

We had some great experiences. The drive north from
Cootamundra left us both pretty stunned as we drove for hours
through airborne topsoil and parched, spent country. Katoomba
was a first for me - the blue mountains standing like heaven's edge

overlooking the haze of Sydney. Sea lice bite you when you swim
at Breamlea, if you play on the same night as Paul Kelly in a
regional town you'll play to almost no-one, Wagga Wagga has a
beach yet is miles from the ocean (the Murrumbidgie) and the
people in the pub are friendly but want to get on stage and sing
drunken harmonies and tend to request cold chisel songs.
Canberra's music scene is a lot healthier than it's soul, sushi
buffets aren't as bad an idea as you'd think but go easy on the
sashimi and Matt kicks arse at playing Big Buck Hunter - it's
probably his Canadian heritage coming through - might be the only
useful thing about being half Canadian he's got beyond the extra
passport he bandies about from time to time.

As usual, we came across some great musicians in our travels.
Vic-local Josh Backwell is one you should know about - a nicer
guy you couldn't find - he writes some clever and quirky songs in a
uniquely australian-folk flavour in the vein of colin hay, paul kelly or
that fella greg arnold from things of stone and wood. He gives away
cds via his myspace site if you're interested.

So I head back to Perth now to start up a WA tour with the Spirits
in a few weeks to promote our next single and to play in the WAMI
festival on TUESDAY 20th FEBRUARY.

We've got something a little different lined up for the WAMI show.
Matt Irvin and I are both doing a solo show upstairs at the Swan
Acoustic Lounge which we will be filming. You're invited. It'll be free
entry, it'll be early and it'll be your way of being part of the WAMIs
and getting yourself a little of that filmic immortality. Please come
down if you can.

hey folks,

from my old man's office here I can see the southern ocean rolling
in through the haze and the paddocks all summer golden. life is
good.

just breaking holiday for a moment to offer a heads-up about the
next tour. I'm teaming up with Matty Irvin (formerly of dusk) for a
national tour we're calling BIRDS OF A FEATHER. It's the two of
us armed with acoustic guitars playing our songs, telling jokes and
doing our best to take the piss out of each other.

tour diary... in a fashion

hey folks,

with four dates down and five to go, this tour with Nathan Kaye is
fairly cranking along.

from the sophistication of the floreat on thursday, a slimmish crowd
in both number and figure we headed to the sticky carpet of players
bar in mandurah on friday. when midnight happened and nathan
finished the crowd turned not in to pumpkins but happy beam
swilling bogans banging their heads to enter sandman. we
retreated to an estuarine hideaway where harmony prevailed. enter
saturday, and with a sunny trip to dunsborough punctuated by
conversations on how we might fix the world and all things musical
we played under the dionysian glory vine of the cape wine bar
resplendent with warm light and starlight through the courtyard
ceiling. a great night had by all and then sunday, after dipping our
limbs in to the aquamarine of eagle bay we reassembled at caves
house atop our mini roman amphitheatre amongst the peppermint
trees, lemon scented gums and dying golden sunlight we sung up
to the nearly ashen sky, slide didge echoing out in to the ether.
after a few days respite, the caravan rolls on to the metropolis now,
and so it is that we'll be at:

** the PADDO tonight - wed 6th - with Toby
** CLANCY'S tomorrow - thurs 7th - with Martine Locke (US)
** cranking @ the INDI BAR - fri 8th - again with Toby but with
drummers and others for this one and only
** the PRINCE in bunbury - sat 9th - hello Mitch!, and finally,
** the CIDERY in bridgetown - sun 10th

it's a feelgood tour. warm and loving people everywhere we go,
affirming life in all it's ugliness and sublime beauty. it's a journey.
see you there with a beer in your hand. or a chardonnay of course,
for those WCE supporters.

Nathan Kaye and Simon London SOLO tour

<smaller>hey folks.

what an awesome weekend of gigs with the Spirits just gone! after our
fifth encore at denmark our show ran past the four hour mark! thankyou
good people. exhausting but so rewarding.

but now, the tour with Nathan Kaye (NSW) starts tomorrow night. 9
shows in 11 days. this is a must-see tour.

for those who didn't catch him last time, Nathan is a unique performer.
Nathan takes his six or twleve string guitar, layers over it his engaging
vocals, slide didge, his beatboxing and stompbox to create a show like
not much else. energy to burn.

Nathan and I have put this tour together ourselves so we've got some
cracking venues and some great guests. Martine Locke is joining us at
Clancy's while she's on tour from the US (remember the Velvet
Janes?), we've got Toby (from Toby and Code Red) joining us at the
Indi Bar and the Paddo and Chris Gibbs (guitarist extraordinaire -
remember FULL?) with us at the Floreat tomorrow.

Don't overlook too that we've got a one-off full band gig on at the Indi bar
too on Friday 8th.
