Tim Mayhall and friends of Shades Valley Community Church are hosting/curating the space and we've been invited to check it out. Tim said he'll put on some coffee and maybe have some pie. We'll press Tim for a hard definition of what emuna is, and press him even harder for a traditional statement of faith. Looking forward to the conversation. Emergent Cohorters,

If ok with everyone- we are going to slide our monthly cohort to the 5th Tuesday this month. So that would be next Tuesday the 29th 7:45 PM. We are hoping for an outside gig at Jackson's so we can actually hear the conversation...We are moving our date to accommodate some special guests this month. The Birmingham atheist/freethinkers society engaged us to see if they could join us for some open dialogue and discussion. No debate smackdown kind of stuff.......just some good dialogue.

On Tuesday Night, October 16th at 7.00PM Mike Lewis will be hosting a screening of the new documentary, "Miss HIV" at the Big Brothers/Big Sisters building downtown.

After the screening we will meet for drinks and discuss it afterward. The Executive Producer of the movie will be there and will attend the cohort afterwards. The film website is misshiv.com.

We will decide on the place for drinks after the movie in a democratic fashion.

Tuesday Night the 18th of September we will have the monthly Birmingham Emergent Cohort at 5 Points in Southside, we will be eating/conversing at The Grill, which is right behind the brother brian statue, and across from the satanic water fountain.

If you are going, please join the facebook group and click the event and confirm your attendance so that I can save you a seat at the table.

Conversation starts at 8:00PM and will go until about 9:45PM. It will be outside so cigars/pipes/etc. Will be acceptable if you are so inclined.

Time for our first Cohort gathering of 2007.....next Tuesday 8:45 Jan 23rd (Krispy Kreme) . We have another special guest . Dr. Keith Putt who heads the philosophy department at Samford, will talk a little about the intersection of our faith and Continental philosophy. No need to be an expert in philosophy to participate....he will set some context for the discussion. Keith knows both Caputo and Richard Kearney - two who are serving as resources at the theological forum this year (http://www.emergentvillage.com/events/the-2007-emergent-theological-conversation). Keith moves and writes in those same circles. Scott has secured him for possibly two evenings with us. January and possibly March.

Just a reminder that due to thanksgiving holidays we will delay our Cohort gathering until next Tuesday 11/28 at 8:45PM. Location again is Krispy Kreme on Hwy 31. Scott Cole has secured a guest for next week's Cohort ( Dr. Fisher Humphries- professor of theology at Samford). We will discuss some different ways believers have thought about God's interaction with the world. We will explore the typical stuff and hopefully the less typical also. This should be really rich discussion.......

The annual theological conversation has been a high point in the life of Emergent Village for many years. In the past, our conversations with the likes of Stanley Hauerwas, Dallas Willard, Walter Bruegemann, Nancey Murphy, and Miroslav Volf have been the fodder for reflection and discussion for weeks and months. This year will be no different.

We are thrilled to be meeting this year with our friend, Jack Caputo. Jack is arguably the preeminent interpreter of Jacques Derrida and was a close friend of the deconstructionist-in-chief. But Caputo is also a philosopher of the first rank in his own right, penning such works at Radical Hermeneutics and More Radical Hermeneutics. Recently, his attention has turned to matters religious, and he has written for two of Emergent Village’s publishing partners, Abingdon Press and Baker Books. He was also a speaker at the EmergentYS Convention, where he always packed rooms. Jack retired from the philosophy department at Villanova after 36 years there, and he is now a professor in the religion department at Syracuse. You can read more about him here and here.

At Jack’s request, we will also be joined by Richard Kearney, the chair of the philosophy department at Boston College. Richard has written two dozen books, including a couple of novels and a collection of poetry. Like Jack, Richard is interested in the limits of philosophy and the intersections between decontruction and religion. He has also been involved in the drafting of peace accords in his native Ireland. You can read more about him here and here.

The format of the theological philosophical conversation is relatively informal and highly dialogical. We begin after dinner on Monday evening with a plenary conversation; there’s another conversation on Tuesday morning, and a third on Wednesday morning. Tuesday afternoon is spent in smaller break-out groups, with the possibility to also visit some ministries in Philly. We won’t ask Jack and Richard to prepare anything, but we will ask those who register to read three books prior to the conversation.

Just a reminder of our monthly evening cohort Tues evening Oct 24 th at 8:45 PM. Our location will be the Krispy Kreme on Hwy 31. We are open to other locations next month....but it was a place that stayed open after 10 PM and got us out of the cooler temps that we will probably have Tues evening. Scott is working on lining up Fisher Humphries ( theologian from Samford) for our Novemeber gathering. Since I am lame at coming up with conversation topics-and it never seems like we are never at a shortage of conversation - Lets just gather. Bring something that has been on your mind lately...

Evening Cohort Tuesday 8:45 Starbucks Vestavia Center

Hey gang,

Our first "evening cohort" will be tmrw evening (Tuesday 8:45 Sept 26th Starbucks at Vestavia Center). Hopefully the weather will be nice and we can pull some tables together in front of Starbucks and Moes. Come and bring a friend.

Some suggested things we might want to discuss:

1) We can continue to explore the topic from our morning meeting this past month .....summary from Greg here below

2) What Mike is doing in his CBF tribe as it relates to missional and emerging things

3) We can hear and discuss what Nick has learned from his podcast conversations with Tall Skini, Webb, and McLaren...others

4) Lastly we can see if Scott Cole is still humble and grounded after becoming a TV Celebrity , globally recognized Financial Planning public figure..

Topic and New Meeting Time??

For our next Tuesday (Sept. 12) I wanted to suggest at least a beginning point for our discussion(and I heartily welcome other suggestions!!) – that we ask ourselves what needs to be looked at in our own congregational life, or practice of faith. In other words, we are often being prompted by others to ask questions and theologically reflect on the gospel, attractional versus incarnational ideas, evangelism, church “leadership”, institutionalism versus organic life, and a host of other subjects. What would we identify as areas needing attention and fresh inquiry in our own congregational life? Maybe we could start our discussion here.

Also, a suggestion has been made to include a evening cohort meeting – and a little informal discussion brought up the idea of maybe the second Tuesday of the month being a morning meeting, and the fourth Tuesday an evening conversation. Ideas? Suggestions?

the gist of the conversation . . .

Good, messy conversation today about Christians being prophetic rather than a chaplain to the culture or a sponsor of other institutions. We wrestled with ideas of engagement, dialogue on political/social matters, and the role Christians are to take in boldly living out a kingdom of God reality and ethic against the backdrop of the way our cultural context is working.

Realistically we feel a tension between having some partisan implications whenever one becomes engaged (i.e. votes for anyone) while maintaining the ability to critique our society in light of God. Can say we tried to discover a way other than non-participation on one hand, and adaptation to our society's status quo on the other.

General agreement that the old dictum of "don't talk about football or politics" is not possible for those seeking to live in the Kingdom of God.

Hey gang,

Hope everyone is doing well.....past three cohort meetings have been rich ....covering the spectrum of NT Wright's work on rethinking atonement to discussing our Netlix que and then "free association" conversation for an hour or so.

This has obviously been convenient as many of us travel through the summer and can't make every gathering- but would like to listen in on the dialogue. Welcome Emergent- C readers

Well, I noticed that our little cohort deal was mentioned in Emergent- C communique. I received contact from someone already as a result. Since we have nothing going on our blog at the moment, I want to welcome any of you are new to us.

As you see, we meet at 8 AM at Panera Bread in Patton Creek on the second and fourth Tuesdays. We would love to have you.

I realize that for some, too often myself, this is not a good time, so don't hesitate to connect with some of us at another time. I would love to have this conversation with with any of you, but particularly any folks inthe southwest part of the B'ham area. I am in McCalla. So drop me an e-mail and let's get together.
