Mobile Vet Service Coming to SPI

Those of us with pets will be happy to welcome a new vet to the community - especially one who makes house calls! Got this from the most recent SPI Chamber Newsletter:

Professional veterinary care has never been so convenient! Dr. Missy Denny Bruce will be bringing a new concept in veterinary care to South Padre Island and surrounding areas, Dr. Missy’s Vet Mobile. The new 26 foot mobile unit will be equipped with digital radiography, state of the art blood work machines, and a complete surgical suite. Services will include, but not be limited to: Wellness exams and vaccinations, including yearly heartworm and intestinal parasite examinations, spays, neuters, de-clawing, general surgery, dentistry, and illness/injury exams including blood and urine analysis and x-rays. Dr. Missy’s Vet Mobile is now scheduling for appointments beginning May 14, 2008.

House Concert in the Sandbox this Friday (4/25)

April 25, 2008 - Raina Rose returns for a one-night engagement in the SandBox Inn sandbox at a meet and greet for alderwoman JoAnn Evans (who we very much hope will get your vote on May 10.)
Things will get started around 5:30 PM with the Saturn Street Strummers. There will be refreshments provided and we will be passing the hat for Raina. Please come and bring a friend!
This singer/songwriter from Oregon entertained 30 or so plus last time she was here (back in Sept. of 2007) and we are very fortunate to have her back for a return engagement. More info...

Sand Blasters Premier screening March 8 at City Hall

If you are on SPI on March 8 please come by the new city hall at 8 for the premier of Sand Blasters III. (on the Travel Channel) YOu will be watching the show with three of the competitors - local sand sculptors sandy feet, Amazin' Walter and Christy McDonald (aka one half of Team Trowel and Error and all of Team Nitty Gritty.) Refreshments will be served, everyone is invited and it will, be lots and lots of fun. Hope to see you there!

Our friend John Geiseking forwards this shot of a chance encounter with the rare "Hardhat Tree", a mysterious non-native species that occasionally sprouts on the beach north of town. (That is John himself on the right and his wife's cousin Doug on the left.)

The K9 Cafe Raises Big Bucks for the Humane Society

Nancy Marsden and Stephanie Wilson open the cafe one day a year at the Isleditterdog fund raiser at Louie's. Nancy's report from this year's event:

When Stephanie was down to her last bags of dog
biscuits, this Camper crafted up the great idea to
have her husband auction them off at the Isleditter
dog fundraiser. Brilliant!!! She brought in $400+
for the K-9 Cafe that gave us a whopping $516.00 to
hand over to the Laguna Madre Humane Society.

WELL DONE STEPHANIE AND SHANE!!!! WHAT A TEAM.

Why don't they rake up that ugly seaweed every day any more?

There are very good reasons why the city is altering its beach scraping policies - read the whole article at the Island Breeze:

The Beach and Dunes Task Force has established a set of beach maintenance guidelines:

Raking should take place only when there is a significant amount of natural matter to rake.
In order to promote growth of a continuous dune, no raking should be done west of the line of vegetation.
The accumulation of seaweed at the toe of the dune does not need to be raked.
Rake tines should be adjusted to a proper height to avoid “plowing” the beach.
Large quantities of seaweed should be raked and placed strategically in gap locations to help build dunes.
Beach maintenance vehicles should try to avoid driving at the toe of the dunes where coppice mounds are forming.
Litter should be hand-picked and disposed of properly. The dunes should not be used as garbage dump sites.
Litter barrels should be placed at equal distances in a straight line.
Litter should be picked up at all beach accesses.
Handicap mats should be maintained daily.
Paul Munarriz, chairman of the task force had one more suggestion: education.

“Tourists are always asking me, ‘Why don’t you rake that ugly seaweed off the beach? You used to.’ Yes, we did used to, and look at the beach we lost by doing it. We need some way to educate people that seaweed is a good thing,” he said.

The Travel Channel has posted a couple of videos from the new version of Sand Blasters -- the one that features three sculptors from South Padre Island (sandy feet, Amazin' Walter and Christy McDonald.) The show is scheduled to premier on March 8 and we will have a viewing party somewhere. (Since the date coicides with Texas Week, it probably won't be at Louie's this year. Any suggestions?)
