Here's another beautifully drawn comic from Red Rabbit #5 by Harvey Eisenberg. Maybe it's just me but that Slapsy looks and awful lot like some other character. Well, if he was created by Joe Barbera.

Dick Lundy - "Impossible Possum"

I've mentioned before that Michael Lah is one of my favorite animators, and "Impossible Possum" has some great Lah animation in it. Particularly the dance scene. I might be in the minority on this one, but I really love Lundy's Barney Bear shorts. Maybe it's because it's basically Tex's unit.

Pixie and Dixie - "Puppet Pals" (w/ music IDs)

I've always had a soft spot for the Huckleberry Hound show even in spite of the drop in the animation quality compared to what most of these guys were doing at MGM. Though this one has some better poses in it than others thanks to Michael Lah's layouts. Also, I've included IDs for the music cues used in this short, though it's mostly a few different ones reused over and over. I'm super nerdy when it comes to those old music cues. I spend way too much time listening to that stuff. "Puppet Pals" mostly uses cues from Jack Shaindlin, my favorite of all the stock music composers, and a couple of Loose/Seely cues. There is one cue that I'm not familiar with, I haven't come across it anywhere, and I have loads of this stuff. If anyone knows please feel free to share. I'm sure there's only a couple of other people out there that give a shit about this sort of thing. I'll move onto some Gumby cues next time.

I'm really looking forward to the upcoming Harvey Comics Classics book featuring Baby Huey so I thought I'd share another short. There's a really fun walk cycle in the beginning of this one. Officer Mutt Comics

I recently got a hold of issue number 5 of Red Rabbit Comics. I'm assuming like Foxy Fagan, this is also a collaboration between Harvey Eisenberg and Joe Barbera. Most of the star characters are directly or indirectly taken from MGM characters. King Looey the Lion is basically the lion from "Jerry And The Lion", Slapsy Squirrel is Screwy Squirrel with pants, and Officer Mutt is just Officer Pooch revisited from the Hanna-Barbera cartoon of the same name.

The comic is in awful shape and was literally falling to pieces as I read it so I made sure to scan the whole thing before it completely disintegrates. The artwork is fantastic so I'll be sure to post the whole thing in a few different posts. Though maybe not the covers, as there's not much left of them. Luckily the rest of comic is in better shape.

Popeye - "Goonland"

I'm really looking forward to the next Popeye set that's coming out soon. Can't wait to see this and so many other great cartoons restored. Bob Jaques posted some screencaps to compare the TV prints with the new restored cartoons. I you haven't already, check out Bob's blog for all things Popeye. Here's a crappy print to hold us over until the set comes out.

Another Tex Avery classic animated by Michael Lah, Walt Clinton and Grant Simmons. Grant Simmons' Spike is hilarious. They're are without a doubt my favorite unit out of all the animators and directors from any of the studios that were making theatrical shorts.

Yosemite Sam Model Sheets

It's been awhile since I've posted any model sheets and I was going through some folders and found these tucked away. I forgot I scanned these. The first model sheet of Yosemite Sam is really appealing, especially when compared to the one on the bottom. I also uploaded Sam's first appearance, the Freleng short "Hare Trigger". This is one of my favorite Freleng shorts.

Animaland - "The Ostrich"

I was rather surprised to see that in a relatively short time that the last Animaland short I posted reached a thousand views on Dailymotion. I don't know if it's because some other blog or site linked to or if it's that they're just not as well known and people are curious. Either way here's another one that I really enjoy. "The Ostrich", released in 1949, seems more "Lantz" like than even some of the other Animaland shorts. I don't know if it's the song, "Dont Hide Your Head In The Sand" or if it's the father ostrich's design that just make me think of mid forties Lantz cartoons directed by Shamus Culhane and Dick Lundy. I think they're great cartoons and recommend the DVD to anyone slightly interested in them. Here's a few model sheets to go along with the cartoon.

I'm a sucker for Pluto cartoons. There's always a great walk cycle or two in them. In this case there's a really great dance scene with Pluto. This one was nominated for an Academy Award in 1948.

Animaland - "It's A Lovely Day"

Here's some more fine animation from David Hand's Animaland series and some model sheets to go along with it. Though I prefer my cartoons wilder than this, I love the solid craftsmanship in these cartoons. I can't even draw these characters right, let alone move them around. Anyone else think "Ginger Nutt" should be a porn star's name?

Bill Wray's King Crab

Bill Wray is one of my favorite artists. I love his background paintings in Ren and Stimpy, Samurai Jack and the many comic book covers he's done. Please do yourself a favor if you haven't already and check out his site bigblownbaby.com. If you haven't read his comics of the same name track them down. They're hilarious. There's also a Hellboy Jr. trade out which is really funny. There's a Baby Huey spoof called "Huge Retarded Duck" that's sick and twisted. He has to be one the finest inkers I've ever seen. His dry brush technique is incredible. Enough ass kissing, let me get to this cartoon. This aired on Cartoon Network's What A Cartoon Show in 1999. I read in an interview that King Crab was to originally be a part of Cartoon Network's night time adult programming, what would later end up being Adult Swim. But the idea of an expensive original show scared them off. It's a shame, I really think this show had the potential to be a big hit. "I... I've never been comfortable... in the men's room." Hilarious stuff. I believe that Bill has had the rights to the character returned to him fairly recently so maybe there's a chance he'll sell it to a different network. Bill also has a blog where he posts his beautiful landscape paintings, check it out here. There's a fantastic interview with art and a painting lesson in Mike Manley's DRAW! magazine, issue 6. Pick it up if you can. The awesome Stephen DeStefano, who also King Crab with him is also interviewed.
