Google go head to head with Microsoft Windows

Google are to go head to head with Microsoft when they launch their own operating system next year. Happy with the success that they have seen with Google Chrome, they are determined to make a dent into the 90% market share that Microsoft currently enjoys.

Anyone trying to achieve such a feat is asking a lot, to topple such a giant is nigh impossible to achieve for most, many have tried, but few with pockets as deep as Googles.

Kumo is actually Bing

So here it is..... Microsofts newest challenger to the Google crown. Has it been worth the wait? Does it offer a different experience significant enough for us to abandon the engine we have come to love?

The answer will maybe take a while to come clear.

In the tale of two search engine launches we can see the difference that $100 of advertising spend can make. Wolfram Alpha launched in the middle of May amid much buzz and chatter, but it's daily traffic fell away quite quickly. Will Bing be able to buy loyalty with its millions?

The Grapg shows the only hard data available to date, namely Google search traffic for each engine on each day. The big difference is that when Bing numbers started to drop Microsoft threw more money at the advertising, and they look set to continue to do so for some time yet.

Will we find the search experience good enough to keep us there? Will Bing overtake Yahoo inside 5 years as is their target?

Time will tell. The most important question is this, will we, years from now be using the phrase

"Bing Me" rather than "Google Me"...........?

Kumo from Microsoft is nearly here

If you were in charge of selling Kumo to the masses, with your hands on the $80m advertising budget that is allegedly available to spend, how would you go about convincing a planet of Googlers to change their search engine?

If it were me I would look to ask questions of Google such as when you search are you really getting the results you are looking for? How efficient is the search process? Do you end up refining your search or giving up without finding what you need?

It is my contention that quite often we fail to find what we are looking for, but stick with google as it is the very best of a bad bunch. Search is still in its infancy and undoubtedly has a long way to go before it delivers what we want every time. The big question is will Kumo deliver better results and thus tempt searchers away?

The recent launch of "Wolfram Alpha" has proved that masses of searchers are at least prepared to take a look at a new engine, later this week we will see what Microsoft has in store for us.

I for one am looking forward to taking it for a spin.

Microsoft near to Kumo Launch

Next week will see the long anticipated launch of Microsofts attempt to wrestle the search market back from Google. After consistently losing market share with Live search this is something of a last chance saloon for Microsofts search division.

After losing out last year in an attempt to take over Yahoo in a $40m buy out Steve Ballmer has dedicated his team to creating a new power in search. It is a tall order, but in the fast changing world of internet search stranger things have happened.

To overturn Googles current dominance will require an exceptional engine that delivers a superior result. Will that happen? Will it be significantly superior to prise traffic from Google? At this point in time who knows, it is a situation I will be paying close attention to.

Can Microsoft achieve their goal of overtaking yahoo within five years? I will keep you informed.

MSN Aim for 2nd spot

Steve Ballmer is targeting second spot behind Google in the search. Following his failed attempt to buy Yahoo and their subsequent deal with Google Mr Ballmer seems to have renewed vigour in his determination to overtake Yahoo and their 11% search share and thus become the main competitor to Google.

He has given the staff at MSN Live five years to achieve his targets.......watch this space

Yahoo - Carl Icahn

It has been announced that Carl Icahn has been offered three seats on the Yahoo board ahead of the August 1st AGM. This in effect brings a deal with Microsoft a step closer.

Originally Mr Icahn had hoped to replace the whole board including founder Jerry Yang who he stated was not up to the job, but now Yahoo will keep 8 of the existing 9 directors and the board will increase to 11 to include Carl and the board selecting two from Mr Icahns slate of proposed alternative directors.

It seems that not only did Jerry Yang cave in to avoid the posibility of losing the vote, but Carl Icahn also capitulated on his stated aim of replacing the entire board for much the same reasons.

Shares actually dipped 64 cents on the news to $21.81 which would imply that investors might not share Mr Icahns opinions.

PR Juice

There is a lot spoken about PR Juice, how to get it, what it does and how it can help you, not all of it is useful information though.

The most important aspect of PR is that it is a tool used by Google to establish the value of a link from your site. Yes, it is a measure of your sites worth in the eyes of Google, but it alone will not improve your ranking. A PR 1 can out rank a PR 7, but I would rather have the link from the PR 7 any day.

PR Juice is the effect that PR sites that link to you can have on your site. If you can get lots of PR 6 sites to link to you then you will gain from their PR Juice. This is for the simple reason that Google will see your site as being "recommended" by many "authority" sites. If you continue to collect links from established high value PR sites such as these, you too will become an "authority" site in the eyes of Google and that my friend is the power of PR Juice.
