MoCCA 08 RECAP

Thanks to everyone who came out this weekend for MoCCA 2008 and stopped by the Cliff Face table. It seemed as though, rather than the economy, it was the one-day 30-degree heat increase that kept attendance down as we saw a lot of out-of-town faces but fewer locals. In all fairness, the few times I stepped outside it felt like I'd opened an oven on my face. I'm not sure I would've come out to the show if we weren't working.

But the flip side to this was that we got a chance to spend more time with the people who did make it to the show, meet new people and catch up with the friends we only see at conventions. Although, as always, there are some people you still don't get a chance to see enough of.

We were incredibly fortunate to have Will Dinski as our immediate neighbor. In four years we've come to really appreciate going an entire convention without the urge to murder the person your next to. Beyond that, he's a cartoonist and book-maker that I admire.

The most insanely striking comic on the convention floor was John Mejias' print triptych Paping Brings You... So What? This was three 20x26" woodblock prints of socio-political debate between soldiers on the front. It's also darkly funny.

I think one of the negative sides to the low attendance was there were fewer people walking the floors and making trades. It's always been one of my favorite ways to share comics. Jamie Tanner came through the convention doing just that, and it was good to see him and get his new book.

Too many new books to go through right now. Minicomics, Belgian comics, Finnish comics, Boston comics, webcominc, postcard comics, newspaper comics, business card comics, etc. I've got quite a stack. Also, I have to install the air conditioner before I pass out.

Hub Comics is located in Union Square, 19 Bow Street in Somerville, MA. Go check it out because it's a new store, and it sounds like they're trying to make it a really great store. And now they carry Cliff Face Comics, so they're on the right track. Or some some kind of track, at least.

Marcos and I will be at New York Comic-Con in April! We will be somewhere in Artist Alley. And our half-table will be stuffed to over-flowing with minicomics.

Most likely, if you stop by the table, Marcos will say something nice and polite to you and I will say something stupid I'll regret later. Guaranteed fun!

It's official. EMAW #9 is done! I had some copies on hand for SPX, but full-on production has begun in earnest. I should have copies ready for solicitations, store, etc. By the end of the week.

The book is 59 pages of comics, and two pages of notes. And a handy recap page! Also, color covers. The whole thing comprises Chapter 5 of KAIJU JUGORUMA. Cults! Secret police! Flying cars! Rubber fetish! Ultra-violence! Bondage! Transvestites! Geological history! Geriatric street gangs! Robots! Murder most foul!

• Optical Sloth has a very positive review of Earth Minds Are Weak #7 up on their site.

• After a June hiatus, How Did This Happen has been back up and running. This is the Cliff Face Comics online reverse narrative corpse jam comic (because we do nothing the easy way).

• Marcos has made the first issue of Carl's Large Story available in our online store (and in stores). This was originally just going to be a convention special, but now anyone outside of our touring schedule can get their hands on a physical copy. The serialization of new pages continues apace every Tuesday over at the Carl site.

• Speaking of books that are available at the online store, Tear-Stained Makeup #6 and Earth Minds Are Weak #8 have both been made available since we last made a store announcement on the site.

And, of course, anyone living near one of the stores listed in our sidebar can find copies of our books there (or a friendly retailer who can order them for you).

• In future publishing news, Earth Minds Are Weak #9 should be available in late August, with #10 tentatively scheduled for the end of the year. Tear-Stained Makeup #7 should be available at SPX in October.

As usual, expect firmer dates months after the books are available.

For about a year, Ed Cunard has been telling me he was going to buy some Cliff Face Comics from us, and we were finally in the same place at the same time for him to do so (MoCCA). I don't know why he did it, but he bought them ALL (sucker!).

Here's a picture of many minicomics, and evidence that Ed owns more of our books than either Marcos or I do. (Seriously: thanks, dude.)

On a related note, I'm finally getting my sea legs, arms and head back and should be getting back into the comics-making swing of things soon. The hangover that was this week is finally subsiding (people in the office actually commented that I seemed to be doing my job today, contrary to Tuesday–Thursday).

On a differently related note, I really need to update the links on this site to better reflect our modern times.

MoCCA 07!

Well, I meant to have a post preceding this one announcing our rare public appearance at the MoCCA 2007 festival. But I botched that, well AND good. However, if you get that time machine working, you can come visit us at that show at table A53. We'll have been ass to ass with the fine folks at NBM. And it will have been great seeing you there.

Cliff Face Comics had a great time at the show, easily our best one to date. We're still trying to recover the strength in our knees and the feeling back in our feet, but the feeling in our hearts and the strength of our love for everyone who stopped by to say hello is so strong it's corny like maize.

Glancing at my notes from the show, I'd like to toss salad thank yous to friggin' Ed Cunard, funnin' Kevin Church, falgroggin' Ben Birdie, frappin' Chris Beckett, fribstactin' Sakura Maku, flippin' Matt Reidsma, fapin' Jon Meijas, fonduin' Neil Alien, frontin' Joe McCulloch, falippin' Maxeem Konardy, firdin' Jamie Tanner, frainin' Liz Baillie, fassbenderin' Marianne R. A few people even said such nice things about our books, I was too busy testing them for blindness to get their names.

I'm sure Marcos has a lot of people he'd like to personally thank as well, but he's spending the week in a land as yet untouched by the ever-pervasive, Illuminati-tentacled internet: Cleveland, Ohio.

And it wasn't just a great weekend for guilt-tripping invisible digital internet friends into making unfavorable exchanges of hard-earned cash money for our half-assed wares. No, it was also a great weekend for getting really drunk on other people's dimes (ever since the U.S. Mint started trying to cut costs by making dimes 53% alcohol by volume, I haven't had a sober day). Brian Musikoff and Kaiju Big Battle sponsored a party of delirious proprtions. New friends were made, bottom shelf whiskey was guzzled, old friends were embarrassed, and I got to dance with a rock-headed monster. Somehow, I managed to miss the monsters pole dancing, but I did see pictures.

Of course, it was ALSO one of the best shows I've seen for quality works. I dropped a few C-Notes for the first time at a convention since my very first one. There really was very little available that I wasn't impressed by (in fact, I don't think I saw anything really bad — but I probably just got distracted before I saw your table). The majority of publishers were pricing things to sell, which one one of the BIGGEST changes I've seen at a convention. Admittedly, I didn't buy anything from well-distributed publishers, and there were two occasions where Marcos and I said, "Twenty-Five Dollars?! REALLY?"), but the vast majority of people had prices in line with what you'd expect to spend on their books, and some continued to greatly under-value their books (I'm looking at YOU, Paping and Partyka). In the end, my stack is totally stacked with self-published, hand-sewn, hand-stapled, screen-printed, xeroxed, recycled, hand-cut, hand-bound, laser-printed, linocut, stickered, bagged, small-press, tiny-press, micro-press, felt-covered, enveloped, glossy pro-pressed, corrugated, hand-folded, Scandinavian-translated, bloodied, sweated out, teared over comics.

Regrets? I have a few. I felt terrible for the people on the seventh floor, but basked in the added space downstairs. I really don't think there was nearly enough overflow to justify the expansion and cripple hard-working cartoonists. Maybe if the tables upstairs were all free, I'd think differently. Maybe a better solution is not letting certain companies rent 15 tables — just a crazy thought (my crazier thought is that maybe billion dollar publishing concerns should be discouraged from attending, but hey, that's what it's all about... right?).

I regret not meeting up with Justin Jordan. I went to his table three times and never found him. I regret not getting a chance to talk to Peter from Bodega, who always makes my convention experience a better one. I regret missing the Bries table. I regret missing YOUR table. I regret being inarticulate when you tried to talk to me. I regret missing all the other parties with their free booze. I regret not cleaning the shit out of my ears before you told me where you were going after the show. I regret going to the show and missing my cousin's graduation party.

But those aren't the worst regrets in the world. Overall, it was an awesome weekend of comics COMICS COMICS COMICS.
