Jane Austen and Clive James

Not typically two names that would come together other than to say Clive James writes nothing like Jane austen. However, when the allegedly only existing painting allegedly of Jane Austen was allegedly put up for sale at Christies yesterday, then allegedly it seems no-one was very interested in buying it (BBC).

Maybe that's because no-one's quite 100% sure of it's provenance. The debate continues, but the fact is it was up for sale in the US because no-one wanted to commit to the purchase in the UK when it was up for sale here. It seems US buyers weren't convinced either.

But Allegedly Clive James came into the debate (reported on NPR) saying that the girl depicted was too 'hot' to be Jane Austen, otherwise her books would have been entirely different. Now I don't want to judge the alleged validity of the painting, but I do object to someone judging a book by it's cover, or in this case a book by the picture of it's author. We recently had the issue of a publisher changing the cover (BBC again ) of a new Jane Austen biography because the one planned for use on the cover wasn't pretty enough [to sell enough books I take it], but Clive James' comment sounds to me just a little bit dumb. I suggest that the picture on the right below simply can't be Clive James because someone looking like that surely couldn't communicate so well or write books as witty as the real Clive James. Touché.

Paul Corfield seems to be taking on touch of Paul Hortons successful styling - take a look at the coloured houses - it's more than a nod and a wink to Paul Horton, and it'll be interesting to see what comes out next from Corfield, but his work seems to be selling exceptionally well and we think Corfield is one to watch.

The New York Times reports that a Jackson Pollock has sold for about $140,000,000 which makes it the most expensive painting ever sold, but just one thing bothers me about Pollock...

I mean...take a look at the picture. $140 million!!?? I just don't get it! There simply has to be more worthy things to do with your money than spend a 9 figure sum on a bit of 8 by 4 MDF that someones had an accident in the paint cupboard with!

The American Dream - gashed

So imagine you're at the top of the pile - you've made your fortune, you've got some nice pictures on the walls of your pad - you know the sort of thing - a few Cézannes, Renoirs, Picassos, etc. You've built a 59 story hotel and casino and named it after your favourite painting, (lets say it's a Picasso, Le Reve maybe) but you've been offered a tidy sum - I don't know, let's say $139,000,000 - and it's the worlds largest sum ever paid for a painting. So you have a few friends round to say goodbye to the painting and you're enthusing and gesticulating about what a great painting this is when suddenly Rrriiiiippp - you've just stuck your elbow through the painting. Gutted? I should say - and then some! Well, unbelievably, this is exactly what happened to Steve Wynn (as reported here by the BBC).

Well, the deals off, of course, and that's a $90,000,000 profit down the drain - not to mention the extra $3.99 for the masking tape to stick it back together again, although actually - looking at the painting it looks like the woman in the picture (Picasso's mistress, Thérèse Walter) may have covered up the gash herself to avoid embarrasment!

Paul Horton - Magic of the Cup

The damage would probably be covered up by a suitable frame or in fact the whole mount could be trimmed by half an inch all the way round without affecting the print itself, or the overall appearance. Buying a masterpiece - not a masterstroke

The Guardian reports on whether buying a masterpiece is actually a great investment. The verdict seems to be that, well - ok an investment in a great work of art might be fractionally better than bonds, but it's not going to be a whole heap better than US and UK equities in general and in fact, if you take into account buying and selling costs, insurance, storage etc, then you're unlikely to see any return for your money unless you pick something outstanding.

What do I mean by outstanding? Well, as Slate reports in more detail, Ronald S. Lauder thought Gustav Klimt's 1907 society portrait Adele Bloch-Bauer I (below) was pretty outstanding because he shelled out 135 million dollars for it!

Now, last time I dug around to see how much I had to spend on a good investment piece, I didn't quite have $135m in my wallet - and I did check thoroughly between the dog eared tesco receipts and the half dozen or so partially completed Cafe Nero loyalty cards.

If I did find a little money there, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't go for a masterpiece. For one thing I can't think of many contemporary masterpieces, because it's contemporary art that most people want these days - something that looks good for the modern living environment. I can't begin to imagine a tired old Constable (painting that is, not your local bobby) sitting square in the middle of your living room wall with your pale beech wooden floors, hint of mocca corner sofa and carbon fibre 42 inch plasma TV.

So - if you're looking to invest in art, forget a masterpiece; take a look round our store and pick an item that suits your living environment, your budget, and your taste, and who knows - you might get a better return on your money than poor old Mr Lauder will.

Three LS Lowry paintings stolen in raid

The BBC reports that three paintings by LS Lowry (including Two Women and Children, below) were amongst 15 paintings stolen from the Clark Art Gallery in Hale (Gtr Manchester) yesterday morning.

I'm not sure we classify very highly up there in the ranks of known fine art dealers that the new owners might wish to approach us, but we're always happy to list third party owned art on this website, so if anyone has these pictures then do please get in contact with us - not least because we'd quite like the £25,000 reward for the safe return of the paintings - oh and the small matter of capturing the gang that stole them.
