Lately I've been bringing my 4x5 along with me whenever possible to shoots. My main reason for bringing it, has been my desire to stretch myself as a photographer. The camera forces me to slow down and be more deliberate with my photography. I'm limited to about 16 shots when I'm using the camera, so I've been attempting to find the best possible angle and composition for each frame.

This past weekend I photographed a wedding at the Comus Inn near Sugarloaf Mountain. The ceremony was outdoors, and luckily the weather held. The ground was still a bit muddy from the previous day's rain. The view of Sugarloaf Mountain from the inn was great, and other than having to shoot into the sun for the entire ceremony, made for a great backdrop.

Last weekend I took some engagement portraits for a couple I know in Washington. They're both graphic designers who I've worked for in the past. It was fun working on something unrelated to normal work with them. They wanted their pictures to have the "DC" look without being specific to any monument or building.

In the rush to get updated images for the new Corcoran viewbook, I had a six person portrait session last week. The assignment was to have a portrait of each person against a white seamless as well as in the studio space for their major.

Yesterday the junior year graphic design students held an event at the intersection of Wisconsin and M Streets NW to promote there project www.givewaydc.org. The purpose of the project is to raise awareness of pedestrian fatalities in the Washington area.

Pictures Without Faces

This past week I had an assignment to photograph graduate students from The Corcoran teaching art at a local grade school in Washington. The twist to the assignment was that the faces of the children couldn't be visible in the images. I brought a few prime lenses and shot wide open hoping to get as much out of focus as possible. I think I found some fun ways to feature the Corcoran students while at the same time hiding the children.

I think when I was in school I had to make a portrait of a person without showing their face. It's definitely a different kind of challenge when it's 25 faces, and they all want to ham it up for the camera.

I've been working steadily for the past two weeks, mostly for The Corcoran. They're in the process of creating a new view book to show prospective students. I used my 35mm f/1.8 for most of it, I've really been enjoying that lens. I didn't have super high expectations for a $200 lens, but so far it has performed very well.

Group Portrait at the Australian Embassy

Last Night I photographed the Coral Sea dinner at the Australian Embassy here in Washington. The dinner marks the anniversary of the World War Two Battle of the Coral sea. The Australian and United States navies were allies against Japan in the battle, and now the anniversary is used to commemorate the strength of the bond between the two allies.

The guests at the event are mostly high ranking Naval officers from the Australian and United States Navies. My big duty for the evening is getting a group shot of all the attendees before the dinner starts. I photographed this same event last year, so I had a pretty good idea going in of what I would need to do. There is a balcony around the length of the hall where the dinner was taking place that I was able to set up lights and shoot from. I placed two speedotron strobes with umbrellas to the left and right of the camera, and two Nikon Speedlights further down the sides of the hall. The speedotron provided most of the light for the picture, while the speedlights made sure that the VIPs at the head table were all well illuminated.

Every Garden needs a Zombie

Today I found something in the gardening section of one of the papers I read that actually looked interesting. It's a zombie statue for flower gardens. The artist who designed the statue also has one of the best mullets I have ever seen in his bio picture.

The Washington Center - Hands Across DC

I recently photographed students from The Washington Center volunteering their time to paint an elementary school in northeast Washington, DC. Most of the work was to repaint the school's parking lot lines, as well as touch up some of the murals inside the school.

This American Life Live

Today I'm happy to hear that there will be a second showing of This American Life Live on May 7th. I'm happy because the original showing on April 23rd is at the same time as Jackie's opening reception for her junior show, and it appears to be sold out at my local theater as well.

17th Street Entrance to The Corcoran

I got a last minute assignment to get a few updated images of the 17th Street entrance to The Corcoran yesterday. Starting today the roof of The Corcoran will be undergoing restoration, and the entrance will be blocked by scaffolding. I shot a similar image of the Corcoran last year prior to cleaning of the facade, and it was used in a lot of their literature.

Corcoran Student Awards Ceremony

This past Tuesday were the annual student awards at The Corcoran. It was a little calmer than in years past, but was still fun to shoot. The top photo was shot with a remote camera I set up in the back of the auditorium. It was my first attempt at remote photography, and it I'm fairly happy with how it went. I learned some things to do differently next time, so it was a worthwhile experiment.

Cherry Blossoms in Washington
