We just got done with a fabulous game of design jeopardy and I randomly check the blog Speak Up where they mentioned that Type was a category in double jeopardy this week.... the real jeopardy with Alex Trebec.

Just a reminder the next meeting is this Tuesday at 5:30. We will let you know the results of the studio tours + setting up a screen printing workshop that will happen fairly soon. Also, the National Student Conference is in Dallas this Spring. I think we should get a head start on fundraising for that event so that hopefully we can all go and not have to suffer the costs ourselves! I know I want to go to Dallas and not pay!

A lecture by Nancy Sharon Collins about design in the wake of Hurricane Katrina

Design is communication. Communication is power. What, then, happens when the lights go out and questions of moral responsibility and leadership arise? Few outside the Gulf Coast can comprehend what it is like when everything goes down. Our dear profession, so dependent upon technology, does not see the forest through the trees. All the hardware, software, planning and databases mean very little without water, electricity or roads. Join us as KCAI alumni Nancy Sharon Collins presents a journey into the heart of a disaster, and demonstrates how design managed to survive.

About Nancy Sharon Collins
Nancy Sharon Collins owned and operated the graphic design firm Nancy Feldman Studio in New York City from 1978 to 2004. Clients included Clinique, Vera Wang, Waterford Wedgwood, Prescriptives, Revlon cosmetics and Curve fragrance, The Metropolitan Opera Shop and the Museum of Modern Art.

Her specialty is building conceptual relationships between technologies ancient and emerging. Collins’ personal research is in a very narrow field: hand engraved social stationery, which is almost a lost art. On this, one of her favorite topics, she lectures, designs for private commissions and works with die engravers and pressmen across the world.

From 2004 to 2005 she was Visiting Professor of Graphic Design at Nicholls State University in Louisiana. Currently she is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Graphic Design, Loyola University New Orleans and is Education Director, AIGA New Orleans. Mrs. Collins is a member of the AIGA Center for Sustainable Design Task Force, was instrumental in the Mbulance Design Relief Vehicle project in 2005, and is a contributor to The Hurricane Poster Project. She holds a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute (1976) and an MFA from the Hartford Art School (1978), both in Graphic Design.

This event is more of an interview type of process. This is not a display setup. This will be a fast pace presentation lasting about ten minutes with multiple meetings. Your work should be in a portfolio or on a computer display type of set up.

AIGA General Meeting

Tonight’s agenda will include talking about the Kansas Trip and two competitions.

Megan: Kansas City trip

Carpool situation: Who will be able to drive to Kansas City?

It is suggested to park at Nelson Atkins Art Museum.

Meet at Applebee’s at 7:00 a.m. if you are carpooling.

All others be their by 9:30 a.m.

Suggested dress attire is casual - (don’t dress down to much)

Just a reminder that we are having our weekly AIGA Meeting tomorrow:

We will be talking about some Top 10 Tips to "Self-Promotion" and
"Interview Questions".

Also, it is the deadline for both the Kansas City trip and the Dallas
Trip. So, again, K.C. is $15 for AIGA members, $20 for KSU members
(Actually it's $25, but -$5 off, courtesy of KSU AIGA).

$15 for AIGA National Members (must provide AIGA #)
$20 for Students.

DEADLINE: Monday, 2/20 (at the meeting).

*DALLAS* http://www.dsvcstudentshow.org {March 29-April 2}

The estimated total cost (including registration fee) will be around $350. If the total cost exceeds $350/person, AIGA will offset the cost.

As discussed, those who provide the $125 registration fee first will get priority to the Dallas Conference. We will be accepting the $125-fee starting next Monday's meeting (2/20, 7pm).

In the event that we have more *paid members* with the $125 registration fee than spots available at the meeting, priority will be given to seniority class members. If spots are still available after the meeting, it will be "first come, first served"; regardless of seniority.

If anyone drops out, members will be moved up the list. Again, we are planning only 12 spots total (6 already reserved by officers until 2/27).

DEADLINE #1: Monday, 2/27 is the closing date for Dallas, regardless.

DEADLINE #2: Monday, 3/6 is the deadline for the remainder ($225) of the cost of the trip (for those who met Deadline #1).

NOTE!!!!!!! Due to cancellation policies of hotels, conferences, car rentals, etc, beyond AIGA's control, refund of money may not be possible. You have been warned!!!

Now that everyone has settled into their classes, we can finally begin AIGA for the spring!! The AIGA officers have an aggressive schedule for all of you this semester! Filled with competitions, speeches, trips and conferences. The first meeting is:
