My thoughts on these signs of the times

With important elections looming in the U.S as well as Canada, in a time where generations have never been more far apart on issues relating to the future of our world, in a time where we see and understand why politicians are puppets wrapped in corporate red tape and why the capitalist system we live and kill for is on the verge of crumbling (yes in Canada too!), I thought it might be a good time to say a few words.

The generation of baby boomers have built up such a massive debt that it will take at least 3 generations to pay it back. We, in Canada, must not fall into the same trap as the U.S. We must kill corporate greed before it kills us.

Stephen Harper represents the same ideology as George W. Bush. If Harper was in power in 2003, we'd not only be in Afghanistan we'd be in Irak too!

I know, I know... the alternatives in Canada are not so inspiring. We don't have our version of Barack Obama (Justin Trudeau is still in training). We've got Stéphane Dion or Jack Layton or Elizabeth May sharing votes ultimately sealing the deal for the Conservatives. At least in the U.S, you can vote for Mickey Mouse...

One thing I like about the way our Canadian government works as opposed to the U.S., is how you cannot do much without a majority government. Sure, nothing ever really gets done that way, and we have useless elections every 2 years, but at least we don't have radical-religious trigger happy crusaders running the show and invading other countries. Wait a minute... maybe we do!

Does anyone even remember that we're in Afghanistan? And why we're there? Oh yeah, to kill terrorists before they kill us. It's what they keep telling us over and over again, but it's not the real reason. Oil is the obvious reason... and the other is opium.

Here's an interesting read I thought I'd share, from GlobalResearch.ca.

Opium and illicit narcotics have played a relatively unknown, yet historic and central, role in world economics and international relations. There were major wars launched because of opium. In the Far East and Southeast Asia, opium was an integral part of European trade. At its peak in the mid 1880s, opium was one of the most valuable commodities circulating in international trade. British exports of opium out of India had systematically helped weaken Chinese resistance to foreign or colonial powers and also helped balance the enormous trade deficit Britain had with China.Opium was very important to Britain. Opium addiction was also used to exploit Asian nations, populations, and economies. The profits of opium were so significant and lucrative that the British went so far as to declare war on China for encraoching upon the trade in opium. Basically an unjust war was declared by Britain on China.

In economic terms, demand is what creates supply. The supply of opium and heroin has been rising. This is happening right under NATO’s nose. NATO claims that it has been tolerating some growth of opium so as not to incite violence against NATO troops. The multi-billion dollar (U.S.) heroin industry of Afghanistan must be addressed. Instead of eliminating the drug trade, foreign military presence has assisted in restoring it.

Afghanistan produces 92 percent of the world's supply of heroin and the demand has been rising ever since the U.S led forces including Canada took over the business from The Taliban. It's a billion dollars industry and when we live in a world where money talks and big business runs government, it makes sense to get our piece of the heroin pie. Now banks in the U.S are starting to go bankrupt, maybe realizing they need to quit some of their inhumane habits. And what does the government do? Bail them out. Quick fix. Band-aid.

I think it's a tragedy that we sent our soldiers to die in such a useless war for the rich and we should be ashamed of our leaders and ourselves for not stopping it.

So on election day, it's important that we go out and vote but it's even more important to stay informed and to speak out against everything that is unjust and unclear about the way our system works and not stand down until all of our questions are answered with clarity.

Together, dear humans of the planet, we will find a way to free ourselves from the boundaries that confine us all, and we will re-write the true meaning of freedom.

I'll finish this opinion rant with a few links and videos I found interesting related to both of these historic U.S. and Canadian elections.

New life in Montréal

We're here in Montréal...

Le déménagement s'est très bien passé, sauf pour le fait qu'on a dû monter nos meubles trois séries d'escaliers pendant la journée la plus chaude de l'été. On est direct sur le plateau, près de Papineau/Mt-Royal où tout est à 2 minutes de marches... bonbonnerie... métro… y a même une église de Scientologie pas trop loin où Tom Cruise donne souvent des lectures. C'est un très beau quartier et nos voisins nous ont accueillit avec des fruits et du pain aux bananes.

Le spectacle au Northern Lights à Sudbury fût très intéressant. Après une longue tournée d'un an au Moyen-Orient, les fameux clowns FFF ont fait une apparition à notre spectacle et ils ont ajoutés une belle ambiance au spectacle (et aucun cloune ne fût assassiné cette fois-ci). On n’oubliera jamais la fois quand Dick Richy et Richy Dick (2 espions du Utah) avaient pris 2 membres des clowns FFF en hottage et ont fini par en tuer un en lui tirant une balle dans la tête devant le public. (Plusieurs dans la foule étaient des enfants et des grands-parents. Mettons que ça aussi c'était... intéressant.)

FFF (Fucking Freedom Fighters) est une organisation qui se dit ambassadeur de paix et amour. Ils travaillent à temps plein pour le bien être de l'humanité, mais doivent demeurer anonyme puisque les US de A les considèrent comme un groupe terroriste. On travaille présentement avec l'animateur Pascal Lamontagne de la ville de Québec pour notre prochain vidéoclip pour la chanson Tête de poisson.

Pascal travaille aussi sur le projet MAKAKATAK, un projet où il mélange sa musique à ces animations. Il travaille avec (et s'adonne à être le coloc de) Stef Rancourt, le réalisateur de nos 3 derniers albums. On a jaser avec Pascal de la possibilité d'un clip au studio Xprod à Québec quand on enregistrait notre dernier album.

We are currently working with animator Pascal Lamontagne from Québec City on a video for the song Tête de poisson. Pascal is working on a project called MAKAKATAK where he blends his music with his animation. He also works and now lives with Stef Rancourt who produced KD’s last 3 albums. I met Pascal at studio Xprod in Québecc City while recording our new album and that’s when we talked about doing an animation for one of our songs.

Enjoy this one still as a teaser.

Récemment, j’ai été nominé avec Robert Dickson dans la catégorie meilleur auteur-compositeur-interprête pour la chanson « La mère de toutes les dystopies » au Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards. Forcément, ça m'a beaucoup fait pensé à l'homme qu'était Robert et l'impact qu'il a eut sur mon cheminement artistique.

J'ai eu la chance de rencontrer et de travailler avec Robert lors du spectacle Sudbury Blues en 2006 ainsi que lors du lancement de son dernier recueil « Libertés Provisoire ».

Robert était un homme sage, toujours souriant et ben down to earth.

I am honoured to be nominated with Robert Dickson for Best songwriter for La mère de toutes les dystopies at the NOMFA. I consider myself lucky to have met and performed with Robert on a few projects.

I was in Québec City recording our new album in March of 2007 when Robert past away. At the time I was desperately trying to finish writing the lyrics for the last song that needed to be recorded. I had a vocal melody but was never quite satisfied with what I had written and kept working on it to the point where I didn’t know if it even made any sense anymore. I needed to forget about it and start from scratch.

That’s when I remembered something Robert mentionned to me once while we were practicing for a show. He told me that he would really like to hear one of his poems fused in a song. The light flicked on. I picked up “Libertés Provisoire”, Dicksons last book, started reading and fell on some wonderful pages of poetry.

Robert’s words jumped off of the page...

So we get a call asking us to open up for The Legendary Roots...

Sure it's old news, but I still wanted to launch a comment out there about it.

So on Thursday, April 27th we get a call from new friend of the band, Guillaume Lemieux, whom we'll be talking about more in detail in a later blog, asking us if we are available to play a show at the Civic Centre in Ottawa on the following Monday, openning up for non other than Ill Scarlett & The Roots. We, of course, agreed to the gig and off we were to Ottawa.

The Roots, a band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is of the greatest hip hop bands of all time and one of my personal favorite groups in this genre ever since I picked up their 1999 album called “Things Fall Apart”.

It’s a great album and includes one of my favorite songs You got me, featuring Erykah Badu. At their show in Ottawa, they played a sweet version of it that lasted over 20 minutes and had the crowd bouncing the whole night.

After the show, we went to an after party at Babylon in Ottawa where DJ QuestLove from The Roots took over the city. It was amazing sharing the stage with such a world class act. Their new album Rising Down was released on April 29th. Check it.

Je n'aime pas la musique de Swing...

D'habitude, on n'a pas de raison de vouloir mettre une critique d'un album qui n'est pas la nôtre dans notre blog. Il semblerait qu'on vient de découvrir une exception à la règle.

Dans la dernière édition de la revue Liaison, on a lu une critique du plus récent album du groupe Swing qui, l'on croit, mérite bien votre attention (surtout le dernier paragraphe).

La voici dans son intégrité.

L'album Tradarnac de Swing, Encore une fois

Je n'aime pas la musique de Swing, je ne l'ai jamais aimée. Les chansons du groupe franco-ontarien le plus populaire des dix dernières années me tombent sur les nerfs.

Je n'aime pas le beat techno pop. Je n'aime pas les textes racoleurs aux rimes faciles et aux tentations démagogiques. Je n'aime pas l'accent américano-pop avec lequel Michel Bénac chante le joual. Je n'aime pas comment le groupe modernise le son folklorique.

Je reconnais l'immense talent des musiciens. Je suis terriblement admiratif du jeu de violon de Jean-Phillipe Goulet. C'est un virtuose, ses attaques d'archet sont spectaculaires, ses hooks sont prodigieux. D'ailleurs, les mélodies de Swing sont irrésistibles, quoi qu'un peu trop bubble gum à mon goût.

J'apprécie le professionnalisme extrême de Michel Bénac; j'adore quand il joue de la mandoline. Il est époustouflant, dominant et généreux sur scène, sa façon de rouler les syllabes sur le rythme est unique et sa voix a un je-ne-sais-quoi de métallique qui est parfaite pour la pop. Les gars sont beaux, sympathiques et sexys. Je comprends pourquoi on les adore.

Mais leur musique m'énerve, autant que celles des boys'band, de Justin Timberlake, de Shania Twain ou de Ricky Martin. Je n'aime pas la musique fabriquée sur mesure pour plaire aux masses, aussi rassembleuse et fédératrice soit-elle. Et Swing joue ce jeu-là à fond.

Cela dit, l'album Tradarnac (interprétez: arnaque de musique traditionnelle) est de loin le meilleur que le groupe ait mis sur le marché. La production en est ultra-léchée, et l'album se décline en une succession de petites bombes qui ont tout pour plaire aux plus prestigieuses radios commerciales. Les pièces One day, Encore une fois, Rien à perdre et La Goutte sont toutes d'admirables réussites, accrocheuses dès la première écoute. L'idée de reprendre CB Buddy de 1755, est aussi très sympathique.

La liste des collaborateurs de Swing est réjouissante : Éric Dubeau, Robert Paquette et plusieurs anciens membres de Deux Saisons ont contribué aux compositions. On s'ennuie d'ailleurs de Deux Saisons, qui réussissait à faire la fête et à faire sourire avec beaucoup de finesse sans jamais corrompre son talent d'impératifs commerciaux.

Swing devrait remporter un immense succès (mérité) avec de disque, y compris au Québec où le groupe a par le passé réussi des percées prometteuses. Bénac et Goulet ont mis le paquet et ça devrait rapporter. Je serai le premier à m'en réjouir. Mais une fois ce texte écrit, je n'écouterai plus Tradarnac. Ce n'est pas pour moi.

Il est important de célébrer la qualité de l'album de Swing, mais il serait dommage d'oublier celui de Konflit Dramatik. Les Sudburois viennent de présenter l'un des meilleurs albums que j'ai entendus cette année, toute tendance confondue. Mais l'Ontario Français les boude, on ne les engage plus, on les a même refusés à Contact Ontarois cette année. Quelqu'un peut-il m'expliquer pourquoi?

J'ouvre mon inbox pour découvrir ce petit paragraphe au fin fond d'une newsletter de Zof Montréal...

Au Rapport de diffusion BANDE À PART (semaine du 16 au 22 avril), la formation Konflit Dramatik se hisse au 5e rang avec 22 diffusions de Je t'aime Québec, Damien Robitaille obtient 17 diffusions de sa chanson Mon atlas tout comme le groupe acadien Radio Radio avec sa chanson Check la brume sous les streetlights. Ce dernier obtient aussi 6 diffusions de sa chanson Cliché Hot (premier extrait de l'album du même nom).

J'aime les petites surprises en se réveillant le matin...

Les membres de Konflit Dramatik réussissent ici un tour de force : se transformer sans se dénaturer ou se trahir. Ils ont aussi gardé ce petit côté engagé, avec des textes qui parlent d'environnement ou de politique. Une des forces de ce disque est sans contredit le jeu au piano de Christian Berthiaume qui apporte richesse et subtilité à l'album.

Bonjour les amis,

2008 s’enligne à être une année très excitante pour nous et on a pensé partager avec vous ce qui s’en vient. On ne vous a pas donné une mise à jour depuis un petit bout de temps, donc pour faire ça plus facile, on a divisé ça en 5 morceaux… le cinquième est un cadeau… donc lie ce courriel jusqu’à la fin… sinon (ben, t’as pas de cadeau).

Premièrement, LE NOUVEL ALBUM.
Ça fait longtemps qu’on en parle… mais il sera finalement disponible chez tous les bons disquaires à partir du 29 janvier. Il sera sur iTunes quelques jours plus tard. On a rencontré des problèmes avec notre distribution en octobre et il pouvait seulement nous assurer 200 copies du nouvel album avant Noël. Mardi prochain, le 29 janvier, l’attente est terminée (pour nous et pour vous).

On a entendu beaucoup d’excellents commentaires venant de la centaine de personnes qui ont réussies à se procurer une copie exclusive lors d’un de nos spectacles. On est encore en train de recevoir d’excellentes critiques médiatiques et avec le lancement pancanadien dans un peu plus d’une semaine, il y a un bon buzz dans l’air. Tu peux lire, voir et écouter à quelques critiques à partir de ce blog.

Deuxièmement, DESTINATION : MONTRÉAL.
On est présentement en train de booker des spectacles au Québec et Ontario et on planifie en faire beaucoup au printemps et à l’été lorsqu’on déménage à Montréal. Quoi? Vous quitter Sudbury? Oui, au moins pour un p’tit peu. Mais personne va remarquer parce qu’on va revenir assez souvent pour voir nos amis, notre famille et pour jouer à la Townehouse.

Shawn, Cory et moi-même, nous avons décidé de commencer un p’tit projet su’l bord pendant qu’on est à Montréal pour se garder aller de façon créative. On va probablement faire un peu de tournée avec ce projet plus tard cette année

Troisièmement, KONFLIT AU PETIT ÉCRAN.
Demain, on s'en va à Toronto pour quelques jours pour faire la promo du nouvel album et on va payer une p’tite visite à nos vieux chums à Volt (TFO). L’émission passera en ondes jeudi sur TFO à 23h (11 PM). On fait toujours les maniaques sur Volt, ça fait que… manques pas ça.

Lors de notre séjour à Toronto, on va participer au lancement de 5 documentaires produits par l’Office national du film. Ce projet a suivi 5 artistes ou groupes de l’Ontario à travers de leur processus de création. On était un de ces groupes.

Comme tu te souviens peut-être, le réalisateur Geoff Bowie et son équipe nous ont suivi à la ville de Québec en mars dernier lors du tournage du vidéoclip de “Je t’aime Québec”. Ils nous ont filmé sans-arrêt pour deux jours de fil… nous en train de faire ravage dans un Village des Valeurs, la première fois qu’on a tous appris à pédaler sur la quintocyclette et nous qui cruise en bas de la rue St-Jean un samedi après-midi, en plein trafic. Il a même un clip de nous qui pique une moyenne débarque sur la quintocyclette. On va mettre un lien vers le documentaire dès qu’on l’a. Il sera aussi sur les ondes de TFO en 2008 et sur Radio-Canada en 2009. Visite le blog ou notre page Facebook pour plus de détails.

2008 will be an exciting year for KD. We haven’t sent you an update in a while, so to make it easier, we’ll break it up into five chunks… the fifth one baring gifts, so read until the end… or else… (you won’t get a gift).

First things first, THE NEW ALBUM.
Our new self-titled album will finally be available in stores across Canada as of January 29th and it’ll be on iTunes not too long after that. Our distribution screwed up back in October and they could only guarantee 200 copies of our new album before the holidays. Next tuesday, the wait is over (for you and us).

We’ve received a lot of great feedback from the hundreds who managed to get their hands on a limited copy at one of our shows. We’re still getting wicked press reviews and with the official launch a little more than a week away, the momentum is building up for a great year. Seconds things seconds, MONTRÉAL.
We are currently booking some show dates in and around Québec and Ontario and are planning to play a lot more this year especially during spring and summer when we will be moving to Montréal. Huh, leaving Sudbury? Well yeah, at least for a little while, but no one will notice cause we’ll be back often enough to visit our friends and families and to play at The Townehouse.

Shawn, Cory and I have decided to start a little side project while we’re out there to keep our creative juices flowing and will probably be thinking of doing some touring at some point later this year.

Third things third, KONFLIT IN YOUR LIVING ROOM.
We’ll be in Toronto next week promoting the new album and visiting our old friends at the TV show VOLT. The show will air Thursday on TFO at 11 PM. There’s always something crazy that happens when we get together with VOLT, so watch for that.

Also, while in Toronto we’ll be attending the release of a 5 documentaries produced by the National Film Board in which 5 francophone artists or groups from Ontario will be featured, KD being one of them.

As you might remember, producer Geoff Bowie and his crew followed us to Québec City last March to document the filming of the “Je t’aime Québec” video. They filmed us non-stop for two days… ravaging a Value Village, learning how to ride a 4 person bike and cruising down St-Jean Street on a busy Saturday afternoon. He’s even has footage of us taking a wipeout on the quadricycle (which we haven’t seen yet). We’ll have that linked on our website next week so you can see it. It’ll also be aired on TFO in 2008 and on Radio-Canada in 2009. We'll be blogging from the road so check the blog or the Facebook page for more info.
