Students capture 'just one minute'

For one minute and one minute only on Wednesday, April 8, Penn State students under photojournalism lecturer John Beale investigated the many goings-on that take place in the Pattee and Paterno Libraries on the University Park campus. Two sections of the course participated in the assignment, which introduced the concept of an immediate turnout deadline. Each class was given a short amount of time to search the facilities for an interesting scene, take their photos at between 10 and 10:01 a.m. or 2:10 and 2:11 p.m. during their respective classes, and have the photos edited, captioned and submitted within 40 minutes. Students selected their single best photo to not only document a vast and intricate building, but also to learn the extremes of a photojournalism assignment.

Penn State Women's Gymnastic Team Advances to NCAA Championship Round

Behind a consistent and solid team performance, the 12th-ranked Penn State women's gymnastic team advances to the NCC Championship round hosted by the University of Nebraska.

Penn State needed a top two showing to advance.

Led by Brandi Personett, who finished second in the all-around, Penn State finished with a score of 195.800. A powerful Georgia team took first place with 197.700.

Nittany Lions win NIT for program's first-ever national tourney title

With a chorus of cheers from 36 buses loads of fans ringing down on them and a who's who of Penn State dignitaries in the stands, the Nittany Lion basketball team left the Madison Square Garden floor Thursday night as no other had before in program history, as national tournament champions. Playing the gritty, energized, relentless basketball it used all season to record a school record win total, Penn State (27-11) posted a 69-63 victory over Baylor (24-15) in the National Invitation Tournament Championship game in New York City to complete a story book season of program firsts and claim just the second post-season tournament title in program history and first since the 1991 A-10 tournament crown.

Women's gymnastics selected to NCAA Regional Championships

The 12th-ranked Penn State women's gymnastics team has been selected as one of six teams to compete in the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships, scheduled for Saturday, April 4 in Raleigh, N.C. The meet will be held at NC State's Reynolds Coliseum and will also feature No. 1 Georgia, No. 13 Nebraska, No. 21 West Virginia, No. 29 NC State and No. 30 North Carolina, in
addition to the Nittany Lions, who are making their 35th appearance in the NCAA Regional Championships.

Battle's buzzer-beater lifts Lions over No. 23 Illinois, 64-63

With Penn State's NCAA Tournament hopes hanging in the balance and a roaring crowd of more than 13,000 on its feet, Big Ten Player of the Year candidate Talor Battle (Albany, N.Y.) drove to the basket and flipped a shot high off the glass that bounced tantalizingly on the rim before falling through with 0.3 seconds to play to give Penn State a huge, 64-63, victory over No. 23 Illinois Thursday in the Bryce Jordan Center. "Talor made a play and we win the game, and sometimes that's what the game is about," Penn State coach Ed DeChellis said.

THON raises record $7.49 million

Even with a weak economy, THON broke all records again this year, raising more than $7.49 million and bringing the total raised since its inception to more than $57 million for the Four Diamonds Fund. The actual total raised was $7,490,133.87. Throughout the 46-hour no-sitting, no-sleeping event, dancers were supported by moralers and other THON volunteers, as well as by the entertainment, and the crowds in the stands. Many of the Four Diamonds Families who benefit from the money raised at THON also were in attendance.

THON Celebration

At first glance, the Triangle Chapter raised more than $650 for THON this year. Members of the Chapter gathered at Oh Mulligans and bowled on the Wii, played Trivia Pursuit, or threw down with a little Texas Hold 'Em.

Many thanks those who supported this endeavor: Oh Mulligans, Barnes and Noble, Camille's, Pipers in the Park, Bob Evans, and the Appalachia Chocolate Company.

Can Penn State fans come out of hiding during basketball season this year?

Men's basketball upsets No. 14 Purdue, 67-64

The Nittany Lion basketball team came out energized, jumped to a 15-point first half lead and then locked down on defense in the second half to post a 67-64 victory over No. 14 ranked Purdue Tuesday night in the Bryce Jordan Center. The Nittany Lions logged their second straight victory over a ranked foe, having downed No. 17 Indiana late last season, and improved to 3-3 in their last six meetings with ranked opponents as they out worked and out hustled Purdue logging a 14 rebound advantage and an 18-7 edge in second chance points on a season-high 22 offensive boards. The victory improved Penn State to 13-3 on the year and 2-1 in the Big Ten as they prepare to head to No. 19/22 Minnesota on Sunday.
