It took me long enough. Profile link is down at the bottom of this post. I was kind of burned out on social sites after Friendster, Myspace, and the like. That's not even counting Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Netscape/Propeller, etc.

Anyway, I thought I'd keep a running tally of my facebook status entries. I'll note below if I thought them up or if they came from one of the status generators, like http://www.generatus.com/

1. "Will is writing the code that makes the whole world sing" - thought of that one myself

2. "Will knows what nemesis means" - also mine, ripped off from one of the greatest lines from Snatch.

3. "Will just got back from Lynnville. Lynnville. Lynnville. Will just got back from Lynnville. Hmm. I don't think so." - mostly LL Cool J's

4. "Will likes the way you talk too. Mmm hmm." - Sling Blade

5. "Will is the guy who put the laughter in manslaughter." - Generatus

6. "Will is crazy. Toys in the attic, Will is crazy." - shamelessly taken from Pink Floyd - The Trial

7. "Will is hammering out some code with an assist from Massive Attack's Unfinished Symphony. Hey, hey hey haaaay!" - yep, that's all me.

8. "Will is looking through some old memes and deciding that Benny Lava video is still funny... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZA1NoOOoaNw" - well, it is still funny

9. "Will is just a worthless liar. Will is just an imbicile. Will will only complicate you. Trust in me and fall as well." - duh. Tool - Sober

10. "Will is like raaaaa-eeeeee-aaaaaaiin on your wedding day." - that Alanis Morissette song just got stuck in my head one day.

11. Waco is getting a Dollar General, for those not in the know." - Waco is an area about 1 square mile that's two miles east of Lynnville, a town with about 400 people. Hopefully they have a lot of dollars.

16. "Will can still his old hound dawg barkin', chasin' down a hoodoo there." - CCR - Born on the Bayou.

17. Land O' Lakes butter all in your crack. Mmmm.
Sarah19fca: you like that?
Bloodninja: I peel some bananas.
Sarah19fca: Oh, what are you gonna do with those?
Bloodninja: get me peanuts. Peanuts from the ballpark.
Sarah19fca: Peanuts?
Bloodninja: Ken Griffey Jr. Yeaaaaahhh.
Sarah19fca: What are you talking about?
Bloodninja: I'm spent, I jump down into the alley and smoke a fatty. I throw rocks at the cats.
Sarah19fca: This is stupid.
Bloodninja: Stone Cold Steve Austin gives me some beer.
Bloodninja: Wanna Wrestle Stone Cold?
Bloodninja: Yeeaahhhh.
Sarah19fca: /ignore
Bloodninja: Its cool stone cold she was a bitch anyway.
Bloodninja: We get on harleys and ride into the sunset.

---------------

Bloodninja: Wanna cyber?
DirtyKate: K, but don't tell anybody ;-)
DirtyKate: Who are you?
Bloodninja: I've got blond hair, blue eyes, I work out a lot
Bloodninja: And I have a part time job delivering for Papa John's in my Geo Storm.
DirtyKate: You sound sexy.. I bet you want me in the back of your car..
Bloodninja: Maybe some other time. You should call up Papa John's and make an order
DirtyKate: Haha! OK
DirtyKate: Hello! I'd like an extra-EXTRA large pizza just dripping with sauce.
Bloodninja: Well, first they would say, "Hello, this is Papa John's, how may I help you", then they tell you the specials, and then you would make your order. So that's an X-Large. What toppings do you want?
DirtyKate: I want everything, baby!
Bloodninja: Is this a delivery?
DirtyKate: Umm...Yes
DirtyKate: So you're bringing the pizza to my house now? Cause I'm home alone... and I think I'll take a shower...
Bloodninja: Good. It will take about fifteen minutes to cook, and then I'll drive to your house.
**pause**
DirtyKate:I'm almost finished with my shower... Hurry up!
Bloodninja: You can't hurry good pizza.
Bloodninja: I'm on my way now though
**pause**
DirtyKate: So you're at my front door now.
Bloodninja: How did you know?
Bloodninja: I knock but you can't hear me cause you're in the shower. So I let myself in, and walk inside. I put the pizza down on your coffee table.
Bloodninja: Are you ready to get nasty, baby? I'm as hot as a pizza oven
DirtyKate: ooohh yeah. I step out of the shower and I'm all wet and cold. Warm me up baby
Bloodninja: So you're still in the bathroom?
DirtyKate: Yeah, I'm wrapping a towel around myself.
Bloodninja: I can no longer resist the pizza. I open the box and unzip my pants with my other hand. As I penetrate the gooey cheese, I moan in ecstacy. The mushrooms and Italian sausage are rough, but the sauce is deliciously soothing. I blow my load in seconds. As you leave the bathroom, I exit through the front door....
DirtyKate: What the ****?
DirtyKate: You perverted piece of s**t
DirtyKate: F**k

------------------

Bloodninja: Wanna cyber?
MommyMelissa: Sure, you into vegetables?
Bloodninja: What like gardening an s**t?
MommyMelissa: Yeah, something like that.
Bloodninja: Nuthin turns me on more, check this out
Bloodninja: You bend over to harvest your radishes.
(pause)
MommyMelissa: is that it?
Bloodninja: You water your tomato patch.
Bloodninja: Are you ready for my fresh produce?
MommyMelissa: I was thinking of like, sexual acts INVOLVING vegetables... What do you look like?
Sweetheart: I am wearing a red silk blouse, a miniskirt and high heels. I work out every day, I'm toned and perfect. My measurements are 36-24-36. What do you look like?
Wellhung: I'm 6'3" and about 280 pounds.I wear glasses and I have on a pair of blue sweat pants I just bought from Walmart.I'm also wearing a T-shirt with a few spots of barbecue sauce on it from dinner...it smells funny.
Sweetheart: I want you.Would you like to screw me?
Wellhung: OK
Sweetheart: We're in my bedroom. There's soft music playing on the stereo and candles on my dresser and night table.I'm looking up into your eyes, smiling. My hand works its way down to your crotch and begins to fondle your huge, swelling bulge.
Wellhung: I'm gulping, I'm beginning to sweat.
Sweetheart: I'm pulling up your shirt and kissing your chest.
Wellhung: Now I'm unbuttoning your blouse. My hands are trembling.
Sweetheart: I'm moaning softly.
Wellhung: I'm taking hold of your blouse and sliding it off slowly.
Sweetheart: I'm throwing my head back in pleasure. The cool silk slides off my warm skin.I'm rubbing your bulge faster, pulling and rubbing.
Wellhung: My hand suddenly jerks spastically and accidentally rips a hole in your blouse.I'm sorry.
Sweetheart: That's OK, it wasn't really too expensive.
Wellhung: I'll pay for it.
Sweetheart: Don't worry about it.I'm wearing a lacy black bra.My soft breasts are rising and falling, as I breath harder and harder.
Wellhung: I'm fumbling with the clasp on your bra.I think it's stuck. Do you have any scissors?
Sweetheart: I take your hand and kiss it softly.I'm reaching back undoing the clasp. The bra slides off my body. The air caresses my breasts. My nipples are erect for you.
Wellhung: How did you do that? I'm picking up the bra and inspecting the clasp.
Sweetheart: I'm arching my back. Oh baby. I just want to feel your tongue all over me.
Wellhung: I'm dropping the bra. Now I'm licking your, you know, breasts. They're neat!
Sweetheart: I'm running my fingers through your hair. Now I'm nibbling your ear.
Wellhung: I suddenly sneeze. Your breasts are covered with spit and phlegm.
Sweetheart: What?
Wellhung: I'm so sorry. Really.
Sweetheart: I'm wiping your phlegm off my breasts with the remains of my blouse.
Wellhung: I'm taking the sopping wet blouse from you. I drop it with a plop.
Sweetheart: OK. I'm pulling your sweat pants down and rubbing your hard tool.
Wellhung: I'm screaming like a woman. Your hands are cold! Yeeee!
Sweetheart: I'm pulling up my miniskirt. Take off my panties.
Wellhung: I'm pulling off your panties. My tongue is going all over, in and out nibbling on you...umm... wait a minute.
Sweetheart: What's the matter?
Wellhung: I've got a pubic hair caught in my throat. I'm choking.
Sweetheart: Are you OK?
Wellhung: I'm having a coughing fit. I'm turning all red.
Sweetheart: Can I help?
Wellhung: I'm running to the kitchen, choking wildly. I'm fumbling through the cabinets, looking for a cup. Where do you keep your cups?
Sweetheart: In the cabinet to the right of the sink.
Wellhung: I'm drinking a cup of water. There, that's better.
Sweetheart: Come back to me, lover.
Wellhung: I'm washing the cup now.
Sweetheart: I'm on the bed arching for you.
Wellhung: I'm drying the cup. Now I'm putting it back in the cabinet. And now I'm walking back to the bedroom. Wait, it's dark, I'm lost. Where's the bedroom?
Sweetheart: Last door on the left at the end of the hall.
Wellhung: I found it.
Sweetheart: I'm tuggin' off your pants. I'm moaning. I want you so badly.
Wellhung: Me too.
Sweetheart: Your pants are off. I kiss you passionately-our naked bodies pressing each other.
Wellhung: Your face is pushing my glasses into my face. It hurts.
Sweetheart Why don't you take off your glasses?
Wellhung: OK, but I can't see very well without them. I place the glasses on the night table.
Sweetheart: I'm bending over the bed. Give it to me, baby!
Wellhung: I have to pee. I'm fumbling my way blindly across the room and toward the bathroom.
Sweetheart: Hurry back, lover.
Wellhung: I find the bathroom and it's dark. I'm feeling around for the toilet. I lift the lid.
Sweetheart: I'm waiting eagerly for your return.
Wellhung: I'm done going. I'm feeling around for the flush handle, but I can't find it. Uh-oh!
Sweetheart: What's the matter now?
Wellhung: I've realized that I've peed into your laundry hamper. Sorry again. I'm walking back to the bedroom now, blindly feeling my way.
Sweetheart: Mmm, yes. Come on.
Wellhung: OK, now I'm going to put my...you know ...thing...in your...you know...woman's thing.
Sweetheart: Yes! Do it, baby! Do it!
Wellhung: I'm touching your smooth butt. It feels so nice. I kiss your neck. Umm, I'm having a little trouble here.
Sweetheart: I'm moving my ass back and forth, moaning. I can't stand it another second! Slide in! Screw me now!
Wellhung: I'm flaccid.
Sweetheart: What?
Wellhung: I'm limp. I can't sustain an erection.
Sweetheart: I'm standing up and turning around; an incredulous look on my face.
Wellhung: I'm shrugging with a sad look on my face, my weiner all floppy. I'm going to get my glasses and see what's wrong.
Sweetheart: No, never mind. I'm getting dressed. I'm putting on my underwear. Now I'm putting on my wet nasty blouse.
Wellhung: No wait! Now I'm squinting, trying to find the night table. I'm feeling along the dresser, knocking over cans of hair spray, picture frames and your candles.
Sweetheart: I'm buttoning my blouse. Now I'm putting on my shoes.
Wellhung: I've found my glasses. I'm putting them on. My God! One of our candles fell on the curtain. The curtain is on fire! I'm pointing at it, a shocked look on my face.
Sweetheart: Go to hell. I'm logging off, you loser!
Wellhung: Now the carpet is on fire! Oh noooo!

-----------------------------

I.F.: You ready yet? If you've ever seen the trilogy The Matrix, as most computer nerdy types have, you'll know what I mean when I mention the reasoning of a machine.

The Matrix is run by the machines, which typically adopt an arcane management style that lacks intuition and true understanding. For example, when digging deep into the earth to reach the last human city of Zion, the machines send one killing machine for each man, woman, and child in Zion. Such is the thinking of a machine.

This morning, a "senior programmer" was troubleshooting a problem according to a specific set of steps put forth in a document, and came to a step that required a login. The guy didn't have a login and the guys who wrote the documentation are both out today so he asked a couple people who he thought might know. They didn't, so he walked around to ask every single person in the office. Such is the thinking of a "senior programmer", aka an AS400 fucker.

I got off on a goofy train of thought that started with the similarities between the matrix and AS400s (both UIs are black with green characters, for example). I started an AIM chat with a non-AS400 fucker coworker that turned out to be pretty funny. Names have been changed to protect those involved.

[09:55] me: I think he's going to ask everyone in the building
[09:55] JavaCoworker: hahahahaha!!!
[09:55] me: nice
[09:55] me: it's like the matrix
[09:55] me: he thinks like a machine would
[09:55] JavaCoworker: hahahhahaha
[09:55] JavaCoworker: i almost spat tea all over my desk
[09:55] me: hahaha
[09:55] me: weird thought -
[09:56] me: I wonder if the makers of the matrix made it black with green characters for a reason
[09:56] me: hmmmmm
[09:56] JavaCoworker: hmmmm
[09:56] JavaCoworker: maybe
[09:57] JavaCoworker: course, i can't imagine an as400 powering the matrix
[09:57] me: if you think about it, it makes sense
[09:57] me: by all measures except for logical human thinking
[09:57] me: the AS400 outperforms almost every other platform in stuff like CPS
[09:57] me: instructions processed
[09:57] me: junk like that
[09:58] me: so maybe the architect of the matrix read a computer magazine and took that into account
[09:58] me: without incorporating logical human thinking that a billion instructions processed each second
[09:59] me: doesn't count for much if you have to run 15 layers of emulators to get a working application
[09:59] me: hmmmm
[09:59] JavaCoworker: that's good stuff right there
[09:59] me: it totally makes sense
[09:59] me: wow
[10:00] me: this is like something you'd think about if you were stoned or something
[10:00] JavaCoworker: are you stoned?
[10:00] me: pretty sure I'm not
[10:00] me: unless fumes from my truck are narcotic
[10:00] JavaCoworker: hmmmm
[10:00] me: possible
[10:00] JavaCoworker: i feel pretty happy after driving the bug
[10:00] JavaCoworker: and it has some pretty potent fumes
[10:00] me: yup
[10:01] me: maybe you're only understanding it because you are stoned
[10:01] JavaCoworker: maybe we're both stoned
[10:02] me: this is going in the blog post, if I make one
[10:02] JavaCoworker: totally
[10:02] JavaCoworker: "was a stoned as400fukker responsible for the matrix?"
[10:02] JavaCoworker: "is the architect a stoned as400fukker?"
[10:02] me: valid questions, after a bit of thought
[10:03] me: unable to balance equations
[10:03] me: lots of glitches
[10:03] me: can't get basic rules like gravity and physics right
[10:03] JavaCoworker: had to use all those fancy words
[10:03] me: yup
[10:04] me: would that make AS400FuckerX and AS400FuckerY agents?
[10:04] JavaCoworker: hmmmm
[10:05] JavaCoworker: maybe like an alpha version
[10:05] JavaCoworker: because i know i could totally take them out
[10:05] me: yeah
[10:05] JavaCoworker: hey!!!!
[10:05] me: one of the less competent ones
[10:05] JavaCoworker: maybe AS400FuckerX's constant blinking is a glitch in an early agent version
[10:05] me: hahahaha
[10:06] me: hey
[10:06] me: maybe FormerAS400FuckerX and FormerAS400FuckerY are like
[10:06] me: the orphans first pulled from the matrix
[10:06] me: just starting to realize what the real world's like
[10:06] JavaCoworker: hmmmmm
[10:08] JavaCoworker: but they keep going back into the matrix
[10:08] me: yeah
[10:08] JavaCoworker: course, i guess all the orphans kept going back too
[10:08] me: maybe they're more like cipher in the first one
[10:08] JavaCoworker: but they went back to defeat it, not to fix it
[10:08] JavaCoworker: maybe
[10:08] me: what about ClosetAS400FuckerZ? This is gonna be a long post, especially if you watch all the movies.

After running across a YouTube clip from The Driver, I decided it was time to do a post that touches the heart of almost every car guy or girl: car chases. I have no idea why movies today don’t have good car chase scenes. I think a lot of the problem is that modern CGI technology gives moviemakers an easy way to fake the incredible stunts that helped make older movies with car chases so great. Call it The Matrix Effect.

Anyway, here are my top five best car chases of all time, in reverse order:

5.) The Seven-Ups

Summary:
This is one of the coolest car chases in a movie that not a lot of folks have seen. The ending was especially good on this one, and car chase endings are a sticky point for me.

Memories:
Does anyone else my age (mid 30s) have memories of riding around in those giant land yachts from the early 70s with gobs of torque and big cubic inch engines? Those things practically floated on air, and the door handles nearly scraped when going around a curve because the suspension was so soft. I think those cars were purposefully engineered to put kids asleep in the back seat.

Notes:
An interesting thing to keep an eye on here is the driver of the land yacht. You’ll be seeing him again in this list. The bad guy in the passenger seat of the land yacht is obviously a rookie at getting chased. He pretty much wigs out the whole time, flailing his arms, holding on to the grab handle, and generally looking like a big wuss. Come on, bad guy. In the words of Tom Landry, act like you’ve been there before!

4.) The Blues Brothers

Summary:
One of the most classic catastrophic car chases in movie history. I think this movie wiped out every mid 70s Dodge Monaco in Illinois. It touches a pet peeve of mine for realism for the Bluesmobile being a “magic car”, but in the end it makes up for it by dropping a Ford Pinto station wagon (containing Illinois Nazis) from a height so tall the filmmakers had to get FAA certification. Looking back, it was the only humane thing to do to the Pinto.

Memories:
“It’s got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it’s got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It’s a model made before catalytic converters so it’ll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?”

Notes:
At the time of its release, this movie held the world record for number of cars crashed. In a 1998 interview for Universal, John Landis credited mob help for getting permission from the Cook County Board of Commissioners for this (alluding to the Board being mob-controlled at that time). The political outrage for the damage caused by this car chase actually caused the mayor of Chicago to lose a bid for re-election.

Part 1

Part 2

3.) The French Connection

Summary:
The car chase in this movie is groundbreaking for a couple different reasons. First off, the car isn’t chasing another car, but rather a train. Second, the car chase doesn’t take place on deserted city streets. This chase is set in a populated area with lots of traffic and pedestrians. This makes the chase a bit more real.

Memories:
Gene Hackman is an incredible actor, and The French Connection was an outstanding role for him. The groundbreaking nature of this chase bumps it up the list a notch or two.

Notes:
Anyone who’s ever played Grand Theft Auto III will recognize the overhead train track. Matter of fact, if you were to turn left at the place where Popeye sideswipes the first car and spins out, you’d be in Triad territory.

2.) Gone in Sixty Seconds

Summary:
This was an incredibly hard decision for me. I have seen this movie over 200 times, and I love the car chase. The final reason I couldn’t put this one #1 is because they used the friggin’ CGI for the very end of the chase. Short of that one thing, this car chase has everything you could want: a badass main car (1967 Mustang Shelby GT500), a swarm of cops and cop crashes (police Crown Vic meets front end loader), an incredible amount of ancillary action (keep an eye on the right side of the street when the first black and white pulls alongside Memphis in the alley), a chase through the LA aqueducts (a computer game staple), outrunning a helicopter, and a friggin’ demolition ball knocking a rent-a-cop through a building. All of a sudden my heart’s beating really fast and I’m not getting enough oxygen and I think I might pass out.

Memories:
When the wife and I saw this movie in the theater, we got into a fight on the way home because I made a comment about wanting nitrous on my Chevelle (it’s plenty fast enough to get me in trouble now). She also loves this chase scene and never fails to jump when Memphis is backing up and the passenger side mirror gets knocked off. The little kid smiling at Memphis (who flashes a smile right back) never fails to put a stupid grin on my face. Good times all around.

Notes:
This is such a monumental movie for car guys that it inspired a whole aftermarket movement for people to not only buy parts to make their Mustangs look like Eleanor, but for a while there you could actually get an Eleanor replica built specifically for you. The original car design was done by the now-famous TV car life-changer Chip Foose. There are two big uses of CGI in the final chase scene. The first was the out of control pressurized tank that flies around at the shipyard. The tank it self was real, as were the movements. The smoke was drawn in during post-production. Not a real big deal in my book. The second big use of CGI was, of course, Eleanor jumping over the accident on the Vincent Thomas Bridge. In the end, this is what keeps this from being the best car chase of all time.

Part 1:

Part 2:

1.) Bullitt

Memories:
Ford produced Bullitt edition Mustangs with the same color and wheels as this one in 2001. I remember seeing a promo clip of Chad McQueen, Steve’s son, abusing one around the streets of San Francisco. Lots of history here. It’s impossible to count how many video games I’m played that had the same San Franscisco streets race course where you jumped down the big hills that flattened out only for the cross streets. In one of my games I have for XBox, you can even drive a dark Dodge Charger. That’s a seriously influential car chase. The hitmen in the Charger kill me every time I watch this clip. These are not the hitmen of today’s movies. These are nattily dressed, crew cut-sporting, cool-headed hitmen who don’t get upset at anything. They don’t talk. Nobody’s yelling, and the gunman in the passenger seat never reaches for a grab handle. It’s a day at work for these two; and when the driver of the Charger put on his seat belt, that’s when you know something’s about to go down!

Notes:
Keep an eye on the rear wheels of the Mustang right when Steve McQueen misses a turn and has to back it up. Check out the wheelhop in reverse, and I think I see an open differential (only one wheel spinning) when he takes off back up the hill. I have absolutely no idea why this one’s not a posi. A posi would leave much cooler black marks when you spin your tires all the way up a hill. Remember that guy from #5, the driver of the land yacht? The same actor is driving the Dodge Charger in this chase scene. That guy, Bill Hickman, was James Dean’s driver in 1955 when the latter was killed after a roadside accident. Hickman, driving the Ford station-wagon and trailer that hauled Dean’s Porsche 550 Spyder, was the first on the scene when he came upon the accident.

Honorable mention:
Ronin, Diamonds are Forever, The Driver, Smokey and the Bandit, To Live and Die in LA, Vanishing Point, Matrix:Reloaded, Hooper

Will Thompsonnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21923867.post-87906700820405808802007-05-03T13:39:00.000Z2007-05-03T14:02:41.601ZExtremely early NFL picks for the 07-08 seasonOK, every year Squid Dog and I make picks about our favorite NFL teams (Packers and Titans, respectively) and every year we try to remember what we picked once the season's pretty much done. Right up at the top of my list are "Senior Programmers" who just make no effort to figure something out for themselves before asking their coworkers. At my job, these people have been given the name "AS400 fuckers" because they all seem to be AS400(platform) RPG(language) programmers. These guys are old school green screen, dumb terminal, 1970s computing type guys who, like their language and platform, have struggled to stay relevant and up to date with modern technology.

We have a whole mess of these guys here. Normally we just kind of shake our heads and snicker about how they can be completely secure in their careers with titles like "Senior Programmers", despite the fact that they have a hard time using a mouse.

I was discussing a development with me and one of the AS400 fuckers today with my buddy Squid Dog. He thought it was funny enough to write a blog post about, so here goes:

On 1/4/07, Will wrote:

So get this.

In the past year, we've lost 5 guys on our network/PC support team out of a total of 6 at the beginning of the year last year. Two guys quit outright, two more moved to different positions completely in the company, and one guy slid to travelling tech for the auctions and stuff, so he travels around the country doing support crap for the car auctions. Anyhoo, this leaves only one guy to handle all the server and PC stuff here in Nashville, where it used to be split up between 6 guys. This guy is basically just going home to sleep a few hours and then coming back here. He's working at least 12 hours days for 7 days a week. They had a guy helping him, but that guy quit also.

What this has to do with the AS400 fuckers is this... Yesterday was our monthly staff meeting. I sat close to the bossguy, which is fairly normal. In the meeting, bossguy says that since the PC/network guy is working so hard, we should make the effort to not add so much to what he has to do and try to handle as much of our PC problems internal to our department. Since we're pretty smart people as a department, makes sense. Bossguy as an example said that instead of calling the PC/Network guy, maybe see if Will can help. That was AS AN EXAMPLE.

This morning, this one AS400 fucker has called me 5 times. Twice just since I started typing this.

First time he called me to say he couldn't edit a PDF that our corporate office had sent him. I responded that PDFs are a one-way thing, and that it wasn't intended for him to edit and send back like a Word doc. I told him he'd have to print it out, fill out the blanks, and fax it back to them.

Since then, he's emailed me about setting up AOL Instant Messenger on his computer. I responded to him with the www.aim.com site and told him to click the big green button that says "Install Now". He's called me for every single step of the process. First one was that it asked for a screen name to sign on with. He just starts putting in shit, not even thinking that he should have to maybe REGISTER if he's never gotten a screen name and password from AOL. I mean, does he try to do internet banking by just typing in random usernames and passwords? Scratch that, if this guy can figure out how to do internet banking, I'll eat my shoe. Anyway, next time he calls because it says he can use an existing email address and wants to know if he can just use his address here. I'm like no..., they mean that for an existing AOL email address. This fucker's killing me here dude.

Make it six times, now he can't figure out what fields are required on the registration form.

On 1/4/07, Squid Dog wrote:

Hahaha. Man, it's hard to imagine that they have ever touched anything with electronic components in it. That is just awful dude.

On 1/4/07, Will wrote:

The kicker is that he's a "Senior Programmer", and has been here at least 10 years now. As long as I've been here, (started here the first time in 1998), we've never had mainframe dumb terminals or anything like that. As long as I've been here we've had PCs and used Outlook for email, everyone's had internet access, etc. There's no excuse that he's worked in a dumb terminal environment for the past thirty years. This guy is basically like one of those people who has lived in the US for 10 years and can't speak a word of english.

Oh, he called again and I finally went over there. He apparently couldn't read the part that said his screen name had to be letters and numbers only. He was trying to use an underscore. Then, he got signed in and couldn't understand why everyone he knew didn't just automatically pop up there. I guess he thinks there's a magic database out there somewhere floating around with the contact info for everyone and their mother.

Motherfucker just came over again! This time he says that another AS400 fucker only has Yahoo instant messenger, so he can't use his AIM to talk to him. I told him he'd have to register with Yahoo and download their IM client in order to talk to them (his head might have exploded if I had explained Trillian to him). He seemed upset that he'd have to keep more than one window open. I told him that he could close them and it still be going as long as he saw the icon in his systray. That got me a blank stare. I told him it was there his clock was down in the lower right of the taskbar. He didn't seem to grasp that stuff can be running without actually having an active window on the desktop.

I need to go punch bossguy in the nose for mentioning my name instead of someone else's.

On 1/4/07, Squid Dog wrote:

Hahaha. Man, that is all hilarious right there. I love it.

On 1/4/07, Will wrote:

This guy is the reason I even coined a phrase "AS400 fuckers"

On 1/4/07, Squid Dog wrote:

hahaha. I can see that. What a dumbass.

On 1/4/07, Will wrote:

I'm telling ya. One of my sisters-in-law got me a new dash instrument lens for my 78 Chevy truck. Sweet! Figured I'd do a little post on the installation of the lens. Took me about 20 minutes to complete, and the difference it made was night and day.

Difficulty: easy - pretty much anyone who knows which end of a screwdriver is the business end should be able to handle this one.

Tools: Phillips screwdriver, 1/4" nut driver, and a teeny tiny flathead screwdriver are all you need. I also kept some plastic ziploc baggies around to hold all the extra screws so none of them would disappear.

First, some before pics:

As you can see, it's hard to even tell how many miles are on this poor truck, which had a good 25 years of being used as a company vehicle for a landscaping business before I bought it a few years back.

On to the installation!

Using the Phillips screwdriver, remove all the screws you can see that hold the dash bezel on. I think there's 8 or so, and they're pretty easy to find. Remove the knobs for the radio controls by just pulling them straight out. Also remove the lower steering column cover, which is held on by 4 screws. They're the same size as the others, so don't worry about mixing them up. Here's a pic of the lower steering column cover removed:

CAREFULLY remove the dash bezel from the dash. The only part that took a little finesse was the HVAC vent at the top right of the instrument cluster, which is attached to the dash bezel itself.

This is what you should see once you get the dash bezel removed:

Next, remove the little knob that adjusts the clock by using a tiny little flathead screwdriver.

Once that's done, switch to the 1/4" nut driver to remove the 6 bolts that hold the instrument lens to the gauges. Two on the left, two in the middle, and two on the right are all you need. I put these into my second ziploc bag so I could find them later. Remove the instrument lens, and this is what you should see:

Installation of the new instrument lens is pretty straightforward, there are even guide holes to keep you straight. This is a good time to clean the new instrument lens, since it's out and probably a little dusty. Also try to keep from getting any fingerprints on the new lens over any of a gauges.

Once the lens is in using the 6 bolts, don't forget to reinstall the clock adjuster knob now. I found it was easier to do this part now rather than with the bezel reinstalled, since you have more room in which to work.

Reinstall the dash bezel while keeping in mind that you have to be a bit patient with that upper right HVAC vent. Once it's in place, grab the ziploc baggie with all those screws in it and your Phillips head screwdriver and get to work putting all the screws back in place. I like to not tighten any of the screws down until I get all of them started. Doing that just makes it easier to maneuver around to get the holes to line up correctly, in my opinion. Once you get them all started and the bezel arranged, tighten them down until they're snug. There's no need to really crank down on any of the screws, as doing so can crack your bezel, and those aren't nearly as cheap as the instrument lens.

Lastly, re-install the lower steering column cover and you're done. Here's a couple pics of the finished job:

As you can see, my dash bezel needs a little help. I think down the road I'm gonna go with a billet aluminum cover to go over my dash bezel like this one, from 73-87chevytrucks.com

Anyhoo, you're all finished. Here's a few comparisons between the old instrument lens and the new one. It's amazing how nasty this thing was, and also pretty remarkable how easy it was to put the new one in.

<img style="display:block; Today's chapter is titled "How to Spot a Sneaky-assed Marketing Ploy to Sell your Season 7 DVD", and it's brought to you by the nice folks from the 90s sitcom Seinfeld.

On Friday, November 20th, Michael Richards, the actor who played the character Kramer on Seinfeld, apparently went a bit nuts after being heckled by an audience member during a stand up routine at The Laugh Factory, in West Hollywood, CA.

Here's the clip of that little outburst (from TMZ.com and YouTube):

In case you didn't pick up on it, the guy who was heckling Michael Richards was a black guy. If you didn't catch that, go back and watch it again. Makes way more sense with that tidbit of knowledge.

That sure was ugly to watch, wasn't it? Real ugly.

Now if you watched TV at all over the weekend, you may have noticed there were a zillion commercials for Jerry Seinfeld's appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman on Monday night. I think there was one mention on every commercial break on CBS while I was watching football on Sunday, mixed in with those super-annoying John Mellencamp Chevy truck commercials.

Come Monday night on Letterman, Jerry Seinfeld addressed the situation (wouldn't you know it?) with his old castmate via satellite. Here's a clip of that one:

He's sorry, he's not really racist, he just lost his temper, blah blah blah. Seemed a litte insincere on the "Afro-American" part, though. Whatever. It's over, right? Wrong.

I have noticed a bunch of commercials for the DVD release of Season 7 of Seinfeld here lately. I wonder if this whole thing might be a publicity stunt to keep Seinfeld on the lips of people who just might be interested in a brand new copy of the Seinfeld Season 7 DVD?

Let's break it down:

1.) Michael Richards is the Seinfeld castmember most affected by the Seinfeld curse

The "Seinfeld curse" is a name given to the phenomenon that none of the castmembers of Seinfeld has been able to successfully get anything going after Seinfeld came to an end in 1998. Of all the castmemebers, Michael Richards has been seen the least. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss (Elaine) tried out Watching Ellie, did a bit on Arrested Development and is now working on Old Christine. Jason Alexander (George) fired his first shot with Bob Patterson (which didn't last a month) and Listen Up, in which even the stupid-fat-guy-with-an-insanely-hot-wife formula couldn't help it stay on the air. Jerry went on tour with his comedy special I'm Telling You for the Last Time, and has been in a few American Express commercials. Michael Richards, however, had one short-lived sitcom in 2000 called The Michael Richards Show and hasn't been seen since.

If you were going to pick one castmember to take a fall for the show, wouldn't you probably pick Michael Richards?

2.) Doesn't it seem awfully coincidental that Jerry Seinfeld is on Letterman at just the right time to address this whole incident with Michael Richards? Don't they usually schedule these things a while in advance? What an amazing coincidence!

3.) Did you notice how the person who filmed the (planned) outburst has great seats and is able to film the whole thing?

At first I was thinking it was odd that there was a camera there in the first place. It obviously wasn't being taped professionally. Then I remembered camera phones. But what struck me after that is the fact that even though the guy heckling is over on the right of the stage somewhere, the person taping is center stage, a few rows back fron the front. Notice also how the person making the video never shows the black guy in question? You hear him, but you never see him. Again, what an amazing coincidence!

4.) Michael Richards is a 3rd degree Mason

This is true, but I mostly just wanted to make sure you conspiracy guys were still reading.

5.) I've been thinking that racism is the new pseudo-lesbianism or the new batshit-crazyism.

Let's face it, actors and actresses are attention whores. The attention of perfect strangers is what motivates them.

Remember back in the early 90s when you first started seeing girls making out and grinding each other in clubs? A friend at the time told me they did this not because they were gay, but because of the attention guys gave them when they did that.

Same thing with actors/actresses being apparently batshit crazy and outrageous. Tom Cruise has enjoyed a fair amount of publicity since jumping on Oprah's couch. Angelina Jolie got pretty popular after word got out of her weird habits, including walking around with a vial of Billy Bob Thorton's blood in a necklace. Ever notice how a celebrity who's career is faltering suddenly gets a big boost by the sex tape that was "discovered" by a construction worker at their house? How many times have you heard that now? I refuse to believe those people are that crazy. I think it's on purpose.

After Mel Gibson's drunken racist episode a few months back got him in the news so much, maybe that's the new thing that you'll be seeing celebrities doing in the near future. Maybe that's what Michael Richards is trying out now. I hope not.

6.) Actually, another though just occurred to me. What if AOL/Time Warner planned this to try to tank Sony Pictures? AOL/Time Warner owns Castle Rock Entertainment, which originally produced Seinfeld. The Seinfeld Season 7 DVD is being released by Sony Pictures, which is presumably not owned by AOL/Time Warner. Maybe AOL/Time Warner's pissed. The video of the outburst was released exclusively on TMZ.com, which is an AOL/Time Warner website property.

Hmmm, that last one has a ring to it.

This post is tagged Michael Richards, Seinfeld, AOL, Time Warner, Sony, Castle Rock, David Letterman, Jerry Seinfeld, fake, and racist

Will Thompsonnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21923867.post-1162525260318091492006-11-03T03:13:00.000Z2006-11-03T03:44:02.643ZDodge gets the sound wrong againIt's like they don't even care. No wonder they're losing money.

Once again, Dodge plays the wrong engine sound in one of their commercials, this time for the new Dodge Nitro (last time it was the Dodge Caliber). You can only assume they're trying to fool people into thinking this car comes with a V8, but again it does not and they are not fooling anyone at all. Check out the video below and listen to the sound right after the guy in the old car (looks like a mid-80s Plymouth Acclaim - by the way) tells the guy in the shiny new Dodge Nitro to "try giving it some gas". You hear the handsome young man rev up an engine that is sooooo not either of the V6 engines that are the only available options in the Nitro.

Dodge Nitro commercial, titled "Jump":

Is that a coincidence? I'm sure Dodge realizes that four and six cylinder engines sound like weed whackers (Nissan/Infiniti V6s are the lone exception) and that the average meathead who would be idiotic enough to buy another big-assed SUV these days gets more excited about the sound of a rumbly V8. Do they not listen to their own cars? Of course they do. They just think you're not smart enough to catch it.

This post is tagged Dodge, Nitro, commercial, and jump

Will Thompsonnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21923867.post-1162227583656016992006-10-30T16:39:00.000Z2006-11-01T15:02:34.403ZFun with SQL derived tablesIn the world of querying databases, every now and again you come across something that makes you say "Holy cow! That's pretty cool!".

That very thing happened to me a few days ago while doing some SQL cowboy stuff for a report here at work. Here's how it went down:

Thanks to some folks who may not have been the best at data storage and database design, we have a table that's almost impossible to get useful information from. Coincidentally, this is the table that holds some of the most important data in our enterprise. Naturally, a user requested a report on data from this table. Nasty self-joins and some really cryptic field names are pretty much the norm in this table, as are datatypes that make you scratch your head. I'll simplify most of this stuff for the sake of readability, but this also was the reason for not doing a few of the more well-known solutions.

I managed to data scrub my way down to only having two records for each REQNO, and I created a view from my result set.
Here was my source view's layout:

REQNO int,
transaction_code int,
milestone_date datetime

I needed to get all columns in the view, the date of first milestone, the date of the second milestone, and the difference between those two dates. I was faced with a pretty ugly GROUP BY - HAVING query, a nasty self-join query, or a new option suggested by a colleague, which was using derived tables.

Derived tables work like a cross between a view, a temp table, and a correlated subquery. Instead of selecting data from a table or a view, you simply replace the FROM clause with another query.

In my case, I needed to join data with the first transaction code to data with the second transaction code and get the amount of days between the two dates associated with those transaction codes.

Here's the query (including the derived tables and date arithmetic) that I used to get what I needed:

select
a.reqno, a.transaction_code, b.transaction_code, a.milestone_date as 'BeginDate', b.milestone_date as 'EndDate', datediff(day, a.milestone_date, b.milestone_date) as 'DaysOpen'

from (select * from mydata_vw where transaction_code = '0201') as a,
(select * from mydata_vw where transaction_code <> '0201') as b

where a.reqno = b.reqno

Pretty cool, huh? I'm not sure I would want to put a query like this into production because it was a fairly poor performer, but it got me the data I needed and magically turned my data into useful information. Might be something to think about the next time you're dealing with data that seems to require a big nasty query.

This post is tagged derived tables, SQL Server, self join, GROUP BY HAVING, database, and query

Will Thompsonnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21923867.post-1161876936217074272006-10-26T15:32:00.000Z2006-10-27T14:55:47.116ZA decent pair of pants!I must be on a Superfriends kick here lately, because I ran across another clip on Youtube that made me laugh.

This one's an old Cartoon Network commercial that ran a few years back. It happens on every other commercial on TV. Every day when I go get my mail, I have 10 new glossy pieces of junk mail bitching about how this guy is wrong and this other guy is right. Of course, each one in the stack contradicts the one before it. Gets pretty muddy as to who stands for what, and what difference either one of them will even make in the end.

I think sometimes this is how elections end up coming down to the extreme sides of either party, neither of which speak for most people out there. I also think that maybe that's what politicians have planned, and maybe that's why they get this way at the end of October. Maybe they figure that they are best served by the apathy they generate in the majority of most Americans.

Anyway, Kevin Tillman is Pat Tillman's brother. Pat Tillman was the guy who left the NFL to join the Army Special Rangers and serve with his brother, only to be killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan. That was subsequently covered up by the Army, because it indeed looks pretty bad that someone as selfless as Pat Tillman was killed so stupidly. Even more stupidly than normal. Kevin Tillman was discharged from the Army in the summer of 2005 and has written a document that's a must-read, unless you're one of the group of people in charge of the country right now.

There are so many people out there right now who have not earned the right to speak about the war and the way things have unfolded over the past few years. Kevin Tillman has more than earned his right to speak.

Here's the link...

Suggest to del.icio.us

Digg me

This post is tagged Kevin Tillman, Pat Tillman, and must read

Will Thompsonnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21923867.post-1161115106046555862006-10-17T19:42:00.000Z2006-10-17T20:19:19.506ZA helicopter outside my window? There's a helicopter hovering outside my window at work as I type this. This sort of thing wouldn't be too unusual if I worked in a high rise building, but this one only has two stories.

Doesn't look to be a LifeFlight helicopter or a military one. Doesn't really have much in the way of official markings. It's black or dark brown with a gold A-Team like stripe.

It's been out there for about 30 minutes now. Also kind of funny that we're in the approach path for Nashville International Airport. Those planes are taking off/landing pretty close by, so the planes are pretty low. He's some guy who's been robbing banks all year and dresses like a redneck. Since this is the southeastern United States, you can imagine that they haven't had much success catching this guy. I mean, I can point to five guys who look and dress like this guy, and I'm at work. I lived there as a kid. The weather's awesome. The food's great. The people are pretty laid back, and, for the most part, cool with one another. There's an ocean there, complete with pretty decent waves and beautiful scenery. After years of being doormats, the Chargers are looking pretty good. The Padres have had a good past few seasons (if for some incomprehensible reason you can stomach watching baseball). Plus, if you're being chased by the cops, it's relatively easy to duck into Mexico.

Unfortunately, the place is being run into the ground. I have no idea why this is happening, but the city government there seems determined to bankrupt the place. This has been slowly happening for the past few years, but's getting really blatant now.

Here's the latest, as quoted from the San Diego Union-Tribune:

The San Diego Workforce Partnership spent $2.6 million on an online program for job hunters that took four years to develop and is little more than a compilation of Web links that so far has attracted 199 users.

Funded with money from a $28.6 million grant awarded to the Partnership in 2001 by the U.S. Department of Labor, the online jobs program was proposed as an interactive Web portal that would offer job training and resources to military personnel heading into the civilian work force.

OK, $2.6 million didn't sound too awfully bad for a web site dedicated to helping people get jobs. That 199 users figure seems pretty crappy, though. Wait a minute, it took four years to build this site? Must be a pretty good site. Check it out, then come back to read the rest. I'll be here.

http://www.sandiegoatwork.com/

Wait a fecking minute, that site cost $2.6 million and took 4 years? And why did they name it "Sandie Goat Work"? Why did it take me 5 seconds to load the first page with Firefox, a 1 year old laptop, and a broadband connection to the internet?

When I clicked on the "Job Seekers" section, I got links to "Career Centers", "Employment and Training Informational Kiosks" , something called "Project Earn", "Individuals with Disabilities Job Searching Assistance", something called "Cabrillo", and links to Monster and HotJobs?

I'm pretty sure I could have had this site up in an afternoon for about three hundred bucks.

Here are more reasons (in no particular order) why it sucks to be living in San Diego.

House prices are about to fall through the floor.

Real estate speculation became so rampant in San Diego that the median home price just fell below half a million dollars. Mortgage-calc.com tells me that a 30 year mortgage for $500K is gonna cost me almost $3000 a month. Who exactly can afford that? None of the cops or teachers I've known have that much money to spend on a house payment every month. Keep in mind, that's median price.

Consulting fees to figure out what the problems are has cost the city over $30 million.

Um, I think they might have put a finger on the problem, but I don't think that report's going to have "quit spending money on consultants" on there.

Policemen are taking demotions and leaving to go work in other towns.

Do you think police in Alexandria, VA make more than police in Washington, DC? Me neither. Even in the Sim City games it's a bad idea to underpay cops.

The airport is tiny and overcrowded, yet no one can figure out where to build a new one. Since the housing boom (see above), there's not exactly a lot of space to build a new airport to replace Lindbergh Field, which is so cramped and crowded and far beyond it's capacity that it's almost less of a pain in the rear to drive from Nashville to San Diego than it is to fly.

After another one of those gazillion year long studies costing who-knows-how-much, there are two plans. 1.) Take over or share useage with a military installation or 2.) Build an airport in another county that's two a two hour drive over a 4100 foot mountain range.

The military nixed option 1 (duh) due to preparedness concerns and overall stupidity. Option 2 seems the only thing left now, but there are a few more problems. Since it would most likely take over two hours to drive from San Diego to the proposed new airport, build a "maglev train" at an estimated cost of roughly $10.6 billion. That's right, (pinky finger to corner of mouth)10.6 BILLION DOLLARS! That's just to get to the airport! Plus, since the site studied conflicts with both military and Mexican airspace, a proper approach would send jets almost all the way to Phoenix. Throw in an endangered lizard species, and this seems like kind of a bad idea also.

Here's a small graphic to represent just how far away this airport site would be from San Diego...

The Mount Soledad cross lawsuit. This lawsuit, seemingly a fairly blatant violation of separation of church and state, has been costing San Diego in legal bills since 1989. Just recently, the land that the cross (or war memorial, depending on how much of a revisionist historian you are) sits on has been transferred to the federal government. As a citizen, this argument is debatable. As a taxpayer however, this should have been solved years ago, and for a lot less money.

Finally, we have the whole Chargers ticket fiasco. I can't find a link for it since it's been renegotiated, but here was the jist: Basically, the Chargers were tired of not selling out their stadium. Instead of making moves toward not sucking quite so badly, they cut a deal that made the games blacked out on local television if the game wasn't sold out. In their infinite wisdom, the San Diego city government decided to buy up all remaining tickets so the games would always be shown on television. I have no idea how much this cost San Diego, but ticket prices start at $79 apiece. I can't imagine the city was getting much of a break on this (now renegotiated) deal.

Since the Chargers are kind of pricks to their fans in general, I figured I'd bring up a side point: you are often forced to buy tickets to a less popular game in order to see a more popular game. For example, if you wanted to go see the Chargers play the Broncos (should be a very popular game, give the respective teams' amounts of success this year) in December, you'll also have to buy a ticket to see another less popular game. What a bunch of assholes, man.

That's it! I guess I'm done ranting about a city I don't even live in anymore. I feel pretty bad about my friends and family that do still live there, though.

This post is tagged San Diego, sucks, San Diego airport, maglev, Chargers, police, SandieGoatWork, and consultants

Will Thompsonnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21923867.post-1158867922050168492006-09-21T19:24:00.000Z2006-09-21T20:06:16.253ZWal-mart's making me confused here latelyI hate going to Wal-mart. I mean, I really hate it. Most times I have to go, I would seriously pay someone to go for me.

When we first bought our house back in 1999, it was on a side of town that didn't have much stuff there. We had to drive pretty far to get to Wal-mart, and it made more sense to go to closer grocery stores.

Then they opened one almost across the street. I'm not kidding. It's probably a quarter mile away from my driveway. There's no way I can not go there now.

Wal-mart's always been cheaper for stuff than the other places, and there is something to be said for being able to buy tires, DVDs, new wife beaters, and orange juice all in the same place and all for less than you'd pay if you drove around to different places. That's how Wal-mart gets you. Unfortunately, this attracts everybody in a 20 miles radius there to buy the same things. Add a nasty reputation for killing companies and undepaying and generally treating it's employees like shit (thereby ensuring you'll get crappy service) have always made me want to avoid that place like the plague. One good thing about living in a place where there's a lot of churchin' going on is that I can usually go get my shopping done on Sunday mornings, even though there's only like, two cashiers working. Even the gas pumps there are crowded by maniacs who will form a line a mile long to save $.03 a gallon in their cars that get 9 MPG anyway. I hate going to Wal-mart. I don't like the company. Something weird's going on there lately, though.

It's like someone died and left the company to their kid who went to grad school at Berkley or something.

First was the story a couple weeks ago about Wal-mart wanting to sell the swirly fluorescent light bulbs to each one of its 100 million customers. That threw me off. I read about it in Fast Company magazine and was shocked at Wal-mart's weird environmental commitment. I shrugged it off to a ploy to get 100 million people to buy a more expensive light bulb at Wal-mart (tree-hugger that I am, I already have these in my house - and have for two years now). Call me a cynic.

Today, I saw an article today where Wal-mart wants to sell generic drugs for $4. The cynic in me thinks that they're doing this for a couple reasons. First is to cut costs for their own healthcare plan (which seriously needs to be expanded upon) by doing their specialty: strongarming their suppliers. Second, I think they're positioning themselves as the place to go for prescription drugs in the eyes of the baby boomers, who will be loading up on drugs as they reach the age of senior citizens. Not that there's really anything wrong with that, I suppose (maybe there won't be a CVS/Eckerd/Walgreens on every single corner lot here in TN - why do they do that, anyway?) - but I have a hard time thinking they're doing it to be socially responsible. I admit that the two don't have to be mutually exclusive, though. That's another one that's hard for folks on my side of the political fence to concede.

I guess I'm finding it weird not to think of Wal-mart as the devil, but maybe some manner of lesser imp or demon.

This post is tagged walmart, Wal Mart, Wal-mart, evil, fluorescent light bulb, cheap drugs and Fast Company

Will Thompsonnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21923867.post-1158764863171214652006-09-20T15:04:00.000Z2006-09-27T17:48:56.703ZWhat a toolIn this article the head marketing bunny for CBS actually says "It's all about the outernet".

Outernet? This guy isn't William Gibson. You can't go around making up words that kind of sound like the opposite of a commonly used word like internet. What a tool.

This reminds me of a trip to Vegas a few years back to meet up with some navy buddies. One guy kept commenting on how one of the strippers who had bad teeth "had a mouth like a rake", and then waiting for everyone to bust out laughing. I think he was trying to get that one going, but we weren't having it. On Friday, he got some moderate amusement from us. I've been compiling a list of things that make you a dork. Everyone is a little dorky, but that's not what we're talking about here. I will grant that there are varying degrees of dorkiness in play out there in the big ol world, but these things will change you from being described as dorky to getting the full fledged dork label. These are mostly things that can be reversed. There are a few unforgivable dork things, though. Those are at the bottom in a Hall of Fame dork list.

On to the list!

Ten Sure Signs You are a Dork

1.) If you buy an article of clothing to wear while driving because the color matches your sports car, you are a dork. Quick story: I used to hang out at a friend's apartment in a pretty rich area. Right downstairs from him was a guy who had a bright yellow Dodge Viper. Pretty cool car. Unfortunately, he wiped out all semblance of cool when he always drive it with a matching yellow cyclist's hat. It's hard to imagine, but there's no way this guy's ever getting laid, and he has a Viper, for chrissake.

2.) If you are 35 years old and shop in the juniors section of the department store, you are a dork. Obviously, this one's for the ladies. Just because you snorted enough cocaine in the 80s to make you a permanent size 2 (and unable to smell), that doesn't mean you should wear those clothes. Trust me, the other women still know how old you are. They can smell that kind of shit miles away.

3.) If you are driving age and still shop at Hot Topic, you are a dork. Hot Topic has made a fortune capitalizing on teenage angst. Ever notice all those kids who look really uncomfortable outdoors? Those are the people Hot Topic are shooting for, not you. Here's a good guideline: If you drove yourself to the mall, you're too old to buy anything from Hot Topic.

4.) If you have a bumper sticker on your car that declares your love for your particular breed of dog or cat, you are a dork. Plain and simple, really. Nobody cares if you love your cocker spaniel.

5.) If you use internet lingo when speaking irl (in real life), you are a dork. There is no pronunciation key for "pwn3d" or "lol" or "roflmao". Don't try to pronounce them. Those are shortcuts for typing, not speaking. For some reason, lots of people out there tend to mesh internet life and actual living. Stop it. They're separate. I could write a whole book here about people who forward endless amounts of emails jokes/"don't break the chain"/boycott gas next Tuesday emails. Also, if you're serious about this whole internet thing, drop the AOL account. Seriously, the rest of us are laughing at you. Lol'ing, as it were.

6.) If you're 40 and you drive a ricer to impress high school girls, you're a dork. This one has a caveat or two, though. A dork immunity clause has to be written here for people who have had fixed up asian cars for most of their adult lives. Can't expect someone to start driving Buicks just because you turned 40. Also, there are those who would argue that you're a dork if you drive a ricer, period. I don't share that opinion. While those cars aren't my cup of tea, you don't get dork status from me for driving one. If you drive one for the express purpose of hitting on girls a decade or so younger than you, then you're a dork.

7.) If you wear t-shirts with lame catchphrases on them, you're a dork. T-shirts are cool. Catchphrases are cool - at least for awhile. It's amazing how combining the two can go so wrong. For example, if you have a shirt with any of the following catchphrases, you're a dork: "Stop reading my shirt", "Ask me, I'm a professional", "My other shirt is a tux", or the all time worst one: "I'm with stupid". That's just wrong.

8.) If you've ever bought clothes for your dog, you're a dork. Dogs have managed to survive for thousands of years wearing only their fur. That cute baby t-shirt or those doggie mittens, or even that goofy-assed hat just make the poor dog wish it could kill itself.

9.) If you wear penny loafers, you're a dork. I'm not the world's youngest guy, but I can't remember when penny loafers were cool. What's worse is that people seem to wear them with shorts, sans socks. Who though of that? Smite that person!

10.) If you smoke and drink at parties because other people do, you're a dork. Not to sound like an afterschool special here, but you know the people I'm talking about. They tend to show up at a party and are always seen with a cigarette held awkwardly between two fingers and a drink. Ironically, these people are trying so hard to be cool that they're dorks.

Hall of Fame Dorks

1.) Guys without kids at car seat age who drive minivans. The minivan is the most emasculating piece of machinery known to man.

2.) Guys who wear shorts with black socks.

3.) This isn't an excuse, but it's a very good example of fun to be had on YouTube.

A while back, Bill Simmons had a mention of the Aaron Brooks glitch in european versions of Madden 2007. Apparently in that version, if you hike the ball but aren't playing as the QB, the QB takes a drop and throws the ball like 35 yards behind him. Interesting. Here's the glitch:

Now, the fun part is how it's named. In case you don't know Aaron Brooks, he's now that QB of the Oakland Raiders. He's athletically gifted and seems to be nice enough guy, but he's definitely not known for being incredibly smart. The Madden 2007 glitch is so named because Aaron Brooks once inexplicably got the snap and threw the ball about 10 yards behind himself when he got under pressure. No idea who he could possibly have been throwing the ball to, or even what he was thinking. Here's the video of that one:

Fun, fun fun. Should be fun to watch the Raiders games this year. Anybody think they'll even win one game?

This post is tagged Bill Simmons, Aaron Brooks, Aaron Brooks glitch, and Madden 2007

Will Thompsonnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21923867.post-1158336788213449212006-09-15T15:53:00.000Z2006-09-15T16:15:34.136ZDanni's blogOK, it took awhile to convince her, but Danni O'Neill finally caved in to my suggestions and got herself a blog. Took me awhile to set her up with blogger yesterday after work, but I finally got her going.

It's amazing what you forget after 8 months or so, which is how long my blog's been in existence now. More accurately, how long it's been since I established something else that needs more attention than I give it. Funny how at this point in my life not as much changes in 8 months as used to change. I'm still happily married, my kid's getting older, I still have the same job and live in the same city, even the same house. Do you guys remember when it seemed your life had a huge change every other week? It was like that for me in the navy. I was always moving to a new city, visiting another country (which isn't as exciting as it sounds - basically just changed the kind of beer we sat at bars and drank), deciding on my future, etc. It just always seemed like something was going on. Even when I got out it was like that. In 8 months, someone would gain like, 50 lbs, or someone would get married and divorced, or I would go through another 3 jobs.

I guess I reached where I was gong all those years. That's weird. Have I peaked at (almost) 34? I don't feel unfulfilled at all. I feel pretty content, actually. I accomplished more than I realistically planned. I'm obviously not a rock star or billionaire, but I didn't seriously think that would happen anyway. I mean, I have the same long term goals now that I had a few years back, but those will be accomplished with time as long as I don't screw anything up.

This is a really weird feeling. I don't know if I should be happy or depressed.

This post is tagged Danni O'Neill, blogger, blog, and uneasy feeling

Will Thompsonnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21923867.post-1157644367221253482006-09-07T15:50:00.000Z2006-09-07T15:52:47.236ZCongrats go out to my sisterMy sister has just added her fourth kid to her growing clan.
