This week I take a break from the usual format to discuss what I do: podcasting and how you can join the fun. Also, my unnatural love of the Open Source movement. I’m sick, I know, but you benefit!

Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

OpenOffice: http://www.openoffice.org/

Podbean: www.PodBean.com

Open Source Software for Windows: http://www.opensourcewindows.org/

Uploading a Podcast to iTunes: http://www.apple.com/itunes/whatson/podcasts/specs.html

This week's episode can be heard here. Aside from that little national election, there's also a number of statewide North Carolina races going on. If you're interested, Democracy NC has put together a nonpartisan voter's guide to the candidates, their qualifications and stances. It's available online here and can also be ordered in print form. It's a great resource, and not at all slanted or skewed unlike some information sources one might name.

And remember, every time an eligible voter doesn't vote, a puppy goes hungry. This year one of those points is Teen Pregnancy Prevention.

A question which came up repeatedly is why? Why should we spend money on teen pregnancy prevention?

$3,868.

That is how much it costs for the average annual costs of a child born to a teen mother aged 15-17. That works out to an annual cost of $312,000,000 per year to taxpayers in North Carolina.

Of course, that's a purely financial number. It doesn't even try to put a cost of the looks you get when you walk into your high school classroom with that 9 month baby belly. It doesn't cover the rumors about you. It doesn't cover the pain of child birth or the response your parents give you when you tell them you're pregnant. It doesn't cover the 3 am feedings or the lack of sleep or the wear and tear on your body that comes from giving birth too young. It doesn't cover the feelings that you're in over your head or the fears that you're not going to be a good parent. It doesn't cover the nights you could have spent with friends or the times you could have gone out and had fun, but can't because you have a baby to take care of. It doesn't cover the cost of that moment when you realize that your childhood is over because you have a child of your own to take care of.

Of course, the cost of preventing teen pregnancy is a great deal less: less than one percent of the annual cost of paying for pregnant and parenting teens. All it takes is the right message to abstain or to be responsible when engaging in sex.

Please, call the North Carolina Legislators who are working on the budget conference and let them know that you understand the true cost of teen pregnancy and that they need to be willing to invest in prevention before it's too late.

Because, ultimately, we either pay now or they pay later.

SENATE CONFEREES

HOUSE CONFEREES

Senator Bill Purcell (D) (Co-chairperson)

Room 625, Legislative Office Building

Raleigh, NC 27603-5925

O: (919) 733-5953

H: (910) 276-7328 (Scotland, Richmond, Stanly, & Anson)

E-mail: Williamp@ncleg.net

Sen. We brought Bill Albert down from Washington DC to help get the message out about the importance of investing in youth before they turn down the path of teen pregnancy. We held two events: A Foundation Breakfast that brought funders and community leaders together to talk about teen pregnancy and a Spotlight event that brought school personnel and media together to highlight the good work that Thomasville City Schools is doing and to show them how they too can do great things.

It was, in a word, awesome.

Our Foundation Breakfast was well attended and well received. Amongst our attendees were two legislators, several reps from NC foundations and several community leaders. Bill Albert spoke to the assembled crowd and his remarks can be listened to here:

But the highlight of the day, at least for me, were the reactions we got. There was hope in the room. Hope that we can succeed at this battle if we only build will and support. Hope that comes from having fought this battle for so long and having actually gained ground. Hope that teen pregnancy need not be the issue that will always be with us. Hope that we can win.

And that we something we could all believe in.

This work is licensed under a
Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Unported License.James Martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03041116305521747364noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2182591422008024122.post-41196419341134398682008-02-26T08:48:00.002-05:002008-02-26T08:51:15.992-05:00Keep Your Leadership Afloat
APPCNC Presents: The First Annual Executive Director/Leadership Development Day

Join APPCNC and Special Guest Trainer Barbara Huberman for a day of Executive Leadership Development! Janet Napolitano plans to reject federal money for abstinence-only sex education classes in the state's public schools.
Napolitano plans to send a letter the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services this week rejecting the money unless the government lifts restrictions that bar teaching issues outside the abstinence-only curriculum, Napolitano spokeswoman Jeanine L'Ecuyer confirmed Saturday.
"She is going to ask if that is flexible at all, and if the answer is no, she's going to reject it," L'Ecuyer said. "With the restrictions, unfortunately we're not able to give kids all the information they need. If you teach abstinence-only, you can't teach birth control and other information they need."
Napolitano, a Democrat, first revealed her intentions Friday at a luncheon in Phoenix sponsored by Planned Parenthood Arizona.
Planned Parenthood has been pushing states to stop taking federal money for the programs and Congress to cut off funding, contending abstinence-only education denies teenagers information they need to avoid pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The groups notes that studies haven't shown the programs are effective.
Arizona becomes the 16th state to refuse the funding, said Alessandra Soler Meetze, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona.
"We are pleased that the governor has decided to stop misusing taxpayer dollars to support programs that give teens medically inaccurate and gender-biased information," Soler Meetze said.
The ACLU said Arizona has put up $780,000 this fiscal year for the programs, with the federal government adding another $1.2 million. Those numbers could not be confirmed with state officials Saturday.
The programs are supported by socially conservative groups, which argue they promote healthy, wise and safe lifestyle choices for students.
The Center for Arizona Policy, a conservative lobbying group, has pushed for abstinence-only sex ed, saying the state's programs have lowered teenage pregnancy rates, STDs and sex outside marriage.
Center for Arizona Policy president Cathi Herrod couldn't immediately be reached for comment Saturday about Napolitano's decision.James Martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03041116305521747364noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2182591422008024122.post-47489450183462620102008-01-07T15:30:00.000-05:002008-01-07T15:35:10.673-05:00How To Make Sense of the NC Sex Ed Laws 101
Building Support for Comprehensive Family Life Education

January 28, 2008

Does your school comply with the Healthful Living Standard Course of Study (SCS)?
