Hubbies Daughter Arrives From Ontario

So, we paid a second visit to the airport the other day, this time to pick up my step daughter, who is more like a sister as far as the age difference goes. (It is only about a week since we picked up my sister-in-law from the Philippines.)

She will be staying with us a few months, maybe 2 or 3, that is the plan anyway.
Maybe I can get her helping with stuff around the house! Make up for Hubby's laziness.

One of the things that has occurred in recent years is the return to more conventional materials for a lot of things in life. Take for instance building. As well as high tech materials that are for the most part involved with energy savings, there seems to be a trend towards the so-called older things. This makes sense actually, as, if we look closer at what we are doing, we can see that we are feeding the sales of newer products, when in reality the more traditional materials are far superior in quality. A good example of this is glass tile. Glass, apart from if it gets broken, lasts just about forever. Easy to keep clean, and chemical and fire resistant, too.
Now, try treating, say, a plastic tile the same way, and you get damage occurring just about instantly.
My hubby has considered, before we had the roof re-shingled, re-roofing the house using slate, as in the UK, this is a common material. It is also way too expensive to import into North America. But, I had to agree it is another traditional material that would no doubt last longer than the shingles we ended up using.

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

My hubby is a little annoyed at nature right now. It has rained almost every day for over a week now, and whenever this happens, the grass sprouts up like wildfire. So, he will get his exercise doing some mowing. Seems like he just got it done when the rain came again, and the weather forecast is for more showers, as well as the occasional thundershower.
He needs to lose a little weight anyway.

Ipod In My Van

One of the things that I like about my 'new' van is that it has a little plug socket beside the radio that allows me to plug in things like ipods or other music playing things, I suppose it would even allow a Walkman to be plugged in there.
So, instead of the older system of spending a lot on a CD changer that stores the CD's in a device in the trunk or under he seat, I can still have lots of tunes that are arranged in the way that I like them to be arranged, and listen to them during my longer trips.

Hubby And His Boat

My Hubby is trying to get his little sailing dinghy going. But he keeps on getting distracted by stuff that needs doing to his vehicle, or other things around the house. He mentioned to me that there is a rotten plank on the entry deck, so I must remember to nag him about that before I fall through. I looked at it the other day, and there are others that might need replacing at the same time.
Funny stuff, wood. You can bury it, and it will last for maybe centuries, but put it in a damp place, or next to another plank, so that air can get to it, and it only lasts a few years.

Yesterday I mentioned about having good auto insurance, and I got to thinking, it is not only auto insurance that matters. There is also life insurance to consider. As a matter of fact, after I got my Jeep written off about 6 months ago, we took out some extra life insurance as well. Not a massive amount, like hubby said, he doesn't want to be worth more when dead than he is when alive.
But my life is now insured enough to make his life easy if I wasn't around. He actually said that his life and mine might both be easier if the other one wasn't around, but fortunately, he was smiling when he said it.
But I have the last laugh if things work out naturally, as due to the age difference, he will be in a wheelchair and under my control while I am still jumping around like a spring chicken.

Insurance is funny stuff, especially auto insurance. It seems a waste of money until you really need it, and that is, of course, when you hit something or someone, or they hit you, as well of course, when and if your car is stolen.
My hubby has gone years without a claim, but I have had two vehicles hit me within the space of about a year. My point here is, that even though I am as great, if not, I am sure all the gals out there will agree, greater a driver than my hubby, even someone as good, no ...... magnificent, a driver as I am can need good auto insurance.

Mortgage Insurance

Insurance is a funny thing. We pay in advance for it, and hope that we never need to use it. With having an older hubby, it is good for me to have mortgage life insurance coverage, so that I am not burdened with the mortgage payments once he is gone, or as he says, 'once I pop off'. Of course, if he lives till a ripe old age, the house will be paid for anyway. But the insurance coverage is still a good thing, it takes some of the gamble out of life.
I have to admit that since my Jeep was written off, and the insurance company treated us so well over it, I am a firm believer in good insurance coverage.

Hubby's car passes its inspection.

Hubby has been busy. He did the work required and his car got through its inspection OK. Now he is thinking of selling it. Maybe he wants to justify being retired! It has been a good little car though, a 2002 Hyundai Elantra, power windows, power steering, aircon, cruise control, and it all works fine. The mileage is getting a bit high now though, at 245,000 KM, which I guess is around 150,000 miles. But, I would not hesitate to buy another Elantra. But I will keep my nice comfy big van for a while yet!

I Am Attached To Hubby's Old Car, - but it has to go!

I drove my Hubby's old Hyundai Elantra quite a bit this past year. What with writing off my Jeep last December, then not replacing it for absolutely ages due to him making a big mistake in his choice of replacement, I guess I was using it for maybe 3 months in all.
So, the mileage has risen up to 245,000 KM, or about 180,000 miles. It is still great, runs well, burns no oil, no rattles or leaks in the engine, and all the bells and whistles work properly, like the aircon, and the wipers and washers etc. I like it.
But, it is time for it to go.
It has a periodic inspection due, so by getting that done first, it can be sold at a good price.
And there is still maybe another 50,000 KM to go before it needs consideration for a new engine.
So, sell while it is still worth a few dollars.
Plus, he turned around with his other poor choice of vehicle, a Kia, and got a slightly older Grand Cherokee Jeep, so he is wanting to drive that, a bit more room, more comfort, and as he only drives very low miles each week, not a big expense difference.

Old cars never get damaged!

Old cars never seem to get damaged, but I know a lot of people who, once they change up to a newer vehicle, get it hit by someone within only a few weeks from the day they get it.
So it is with my new (new to me, anyway!) van, a 2008 Uplander. I was washing it the other day, and noticed that someone had run into the corner of the bumper, and cracked the paint there. Not enough to want it fixed, but annoying all the same.
Now Hubby has pointed out that the old Hyundai we have also got damaged when being used in the city, and he says that city people are morons when driving, and that it is impossible to keep a nice car while living in a city.
So, I blame the new car, he blames city people. I think that he might be right.

My Hubby, being older, can remember the time when a person could take a job at the age of 16 or 18 years old, then stay in the same job, or at least with the same company, until retiring at age 65. Things seem to have changed, certainly there is a trend towards less loyalty to the company by the employees, and this is probably justified, as it might well be driven by the example set by a lot of modern companies, in laying off the workforce randomly, and often for no other reason than increased profits.
The current employment climate though, is a more genuine one, and companies are probably more honest in their reasons for downsizing. The situation seems to have a dwell period now, and then will most likely pick back up, and head towards the next boom time. To take advantage, as far as a career goes, it is probably a good time to prepare to get into the sales side of things, rather than the manufacturing, as sales will pick up using existing stock, whereas manufacturing will take longer to catch up. This is why right now it is worth taking a close look at sales training opportunities.

Gloom and Doom - I Don't Think So!

The news on TV seems a bit weird to me. They seem to delight in being negative. The recent steps taken to assist recovery of thee economy are looking to me like they are working, or at least they are slowing the slide down quite a bit. But the news reports don't seem to be reporting accurately, it is as though the economy has been sliding all the time, and never stopped doing so.
It will be interesting to see when they actually start getting a bit more accurate, I suppose it will be when the upward figures are really dramatic, and they can make it sound sensational.

Here is something interesting. I had never even given it any thought, but studies show that you can reduce your carbon footprint by shopping online. When you think about it, it makes sense.
By doing Green shopping online, the goods go directly to you by regular delivery trucks that are traveling a local route anyway. By going to a store, you are not only spending your money on your gas and not forgetting the other running expenses of a vehicle, which are probably about as much as the gas expenses in themselves, but you are making the truck deliver the goods to a place where the goods will not end up!

The great thing about the Monday being something of a holiday, is that we feel the benefit later in the week, which will no doubt rush by like a train, getting us to next weekend in no time flat. For me, Easter is a marking place, that gets me changing into my summer mode, which is where I don't have to worry about heating oil, or studded tires, and it is the opportunity to do the outside jobs, not only around the house, but also in allowing me the comfort of being able to vacuum out the car, or give it a quick hose down, without having to travel to a car wash. I feel GOOD!

It is that time of year again, where, after spending less time walking and getting exercise, I look in the full length mirror in fear! Each year, I make a promise that the next year I will get ahead and be more ready for summer, by getting into shape, but each year, I forget, as th summer seems to suddenly switch itself on.
