This will be my second year as a counselor, and I could not be more excited to be coming back! I was a camper at Kanuga for 5 years, then a trailblazer and an LT, so I've spent a lot of time at camp and it means so much to me! Right now I am finishing up a semester in Montpellier, France, where I have had a great time meeting new people, eating pastries, and hearing people say "Ooh la la" a lot. I'll be a senior at UNC next year, and as great as France is, I can't wait to get back to the best campus in the world!

Some of my favorite things at camp include making string bracelets, tie-dye, dressing up silly for the dance, the Kanuga olympics, drinking lots of water, and going on campouts! I know this summer is going to be great, I can't wait to meet all of you!

See you soon,
Meredith

Brad Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05029922380679392053noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21770307.post-65855140448794711262009-05-05T08:06:00.001-05:002009-05-05T08:08:36.706-05:00Pierce Myers headed back to NC
Hello All,

Greetings from Mars (just kidding). My name is Pierce Myers and this will be my eighth year as part of the Kanuga community. I enjoy the outdoors and especially those whispering pines of North Carolina. Sports are my passion and I hope to continue playing soccer in college. This will be my first year as counselor and I'm as excited as I was Christmas of '94. That was an awesome Christmas. Living in Sewanee, Tennessee I've grown up outdoors, and around great people. Sewanee holds a special place in my heart as does Kanuga. You will more than likely catch me being silly and making jokes. Next year I will be traveling around the country (and possibly Spain) before attending the University of the South.

Thanks for reading, I hope to meet YOU, eventually.

-Pierce

Brad Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05029922380679392053noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21770307.post-1866624772549604492009-05-04T15:21:00.001-05:002009-05-04T15:22:57.506-05:00Philip Cook celebrates a dozen years
Fellow Persons of Kanuga,

My name is Philip Cook, and I come to you from Greenville, SC. This will be my 12th year at camp and 3rd on staff. When I’m not singing camp ditties or pondering the random absurdities of life’s existence, I like to hang out on campouts, run in the field, and go crazy in Fox Building during evening programs.

I am a huge basketball fan and try my best to play with friends every day of the year. I also love watching movies in my spare time, and always keep up-to-date with what’s coming out in theaters. In case you were wondering, I do prefer Applejacks to Lucky Charms (apologies to all marshmallow lovers). Anyway, I can’t wait to meet everyone this year. Some of you may remember me from last year when I was a JC. I'm from London, England and the equivalent of a senior at high school, getting ready to take my exams!

I love the outdoors, camping, hiking, canoeing and I am also on the crew team at my school. I was a trailblazer a few summers ago and had such a great time that I am going to take a year out before college to hike the whole Trail!

I also play a bit of guitar and help out in a local school. I can't wait for camp and all the great activities: rock climbing, arts and crafts and hanging out at the lake.

Get excited,
Claire :)

Brad Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05029922380679392053noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21770307.post-39163151743954571792009-04-23T08:06:00.000-05:002009-04-23T08:08:11.349-05:00Katie Zwingert Headed Back to Camp

Hey Campers!
I'm Katie Zwingert and this will be my second year at Kanuga. Last year I was a JC but I'm sooo excited to be a counselor this year! I can't wait for campouts, rock climbing, and cabin dance parties this summer. I've always loved being outdoors and doing things like kayaking, hiking, swimming, sailing, scuba diving, and fishing. While I might not be able to do all of those things specifically at camp (scuba diving in the lake maybe??), there are so many wonderful things to look forward to this summer!Right now I'm a senior in high school and very active in student life as a varsity cheerleader (2009 State Champs!). However, I'm very excited for next year when I'll be a freshman at the University of South Florida's Honors College. I'm not sure what my major will be yet, but I'm sure it will be something horribly complicated and nerdy in the science department. I'm counting down the days until camp and I can't wait to see everyone!

-Katie

Brad Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05029922380679392053noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21770307.post-69113477512821835682009-04-21T12:56:00.002-05:002009-04-21T13:00:31.533-05:00Holli Matze Back at Camp
Hey everybody!

I'm so excited to be coming back to Kanuga this summer! You may remember me as being a counselor for the past two summers. This year, I'll be working on the administrative staff; helping out in the office, as well as making your arts program areas the best they can possibly be!

I'm a senior Musical Theatre major at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. This past year, I've gotten involved in fashion design, and I am completing an internship in the Costume Design department at school. I'm also the Music Director of an acappella group, the BluesTones. In my spare time, I love writing music, playing the piano, taking pictures, being outdoors and basically doing anything that's creative!

I can't wait to see you all this summer! I was born and raised (most of my life) in Augusta, Georgia and am now finishing up my junior year at the University of Georgia (the best university in the country, despite what Richard says)! I am a Mathematics Education major and am very active in my sorority.

This will be my 4th year on staff at Camp Kanuga and my 8th year altogether! This summer I am going to be the Head Female Counselor, and I cannot even explain how excited I am! Some of the things I am super excited about: rock climbing, lunch time songs, duct tape bracelets, chacos, fun evening programs, campfires, catching newts, and meeting YOU! (this list can actually go on forever…) If you are a first time camper, get ready for the time of your life! I am counting down the seconds until I get to see all of the old faces again and meet all of the new ones!

Lots of love,

Katherine Sheetz

Brad Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05029922380679392053noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21770307.post-48083306742641434292009-04-20T16:34:00.002-05:002009-04-20T16:39:25.142-05:00Catherine Outten: Programs Director
I am please to announce that Catherine Outten will be returning to Camp Kanuga as this year's Programs Director. You may remember Catherine from Camp Kanuga 2006 when she was a counselor and climbing instructor. Catherine is from Roper, North Carolina and grew up attending another Episcopal camp called Camp Trinity.

By this summer, Catherine will have graduated from Sewanee with a Religious Studies major. She claimbs to love camping, hiking and climbing though her best friends say that she likes plaid, bad country music, hammocks, practical jokes, and cool whip.

I am very excited Catherine will be working with me and Bethany this year as one of the directors. Catherine is an extremely talented person who will make sure every camper has an amazing time at camp this year.

When I asked her what she was looking forward to most, she said "This summer, I can't wait be outside, play four square, write letters, and make bracelets."

Welcome back Catherine!

-Brad

Brad Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05029922380679392053noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21770307.post-84752037213608718192009-04-20T16:32:00.001-05:002009-04-20T16:34:09.237-05:00Richard Allred: Head Male Counselor
Hey Campers,

My name is Richard Allred. You may recognize me as this will be my 4th year on staff, and my 9th year at Kanuga. I am from Wingate, NC but I currently reside in Chapel Hill, NC. I attend the greatest university in the country, the University of North Carolina (2009 Basketball National Champions). Right now I am studying Computer Science, and I am really enjoying it. I'm kind of a nerd, but I like to have fun. I really enjoy music and playing instruments. I am a huge basketball fan, and I recently made the trip up to Detroit, MI to watch the Tar Heels dismantle the Spartans, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I'm super excited about this summer, it's been my dream since I was camper to be the Head Male Counselor, I really think it's going to be a BLAST!

See you soon,

Richard

Brad Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05029922380679392053noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21770307.post-23022865424757476842009-04-20T11:11:00.002-05:002009-04-20T11:13:54.976-05:00Josh Oxley, Our Camp Chaplain

Hey everyone! My name is Josh Oxley, and for the past 7 years I've lived in and around Fairfax, VA. But I'm graduating from George Mason University in May! As of September, I'll be working on my Masters degree in Religious Studies at the University of Chicago. Many of you know me from last summer, when I was a counselor at Camp. I'm excited to be returning again this summer, but this time I will be your Camp Chaplain!

I'm really excited about everything at Kanuga: being outdoors again, hiking, talking with all you fine folks. I miss sketch time in Arts and Crafts and Chess matches in the Dining Hall. But I'm especially looking forward to making Kanuga Community one of the best activity areas this summer! It may be a little different than you remember in years past, but I'm thinking you're going to love it more than ever! And be thinking about any cool activites you'd love to see come up in Kanuga Community, since I'm always open to suggestions.

So take care everyone, and I can't wait to get back to Kanuga this summer. For those of you who haven't been before, get excited: It is, without a doubt, one of the best experiences you will ever have. And for those of you are veterans of Camp Kanuga, you know what I'm talking about. Take care!

Yours,
Josh

Brad Thompsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05029922380679392053noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21770307.post-78453751891079534732009-03-04T11:18:00.004-05:002009-03-09T16:17:57.654-05:00Important Trailblazer Pack and Paddle News

We are very excited to announce an important change regarding the Trailblazer Pack and Paddle programs!

We now will accept any interested 16 year old. My name is Bethany Roach and I'm the new full time assistant director for Camp Kanuga. I started working a few weeks ago, and I am LOVING it! I'm really excited to be getting ready for you all and for this summer.

I love living in the mountains - I can't wait to explore all the trails around campus and swim in the lake (as soon as it's a little warmer.) For now, I'm enjoying my cold-weather hobbies - playing the guitar and mandolin, reading, camp-outs & campfires with my friends, and going to concerts.

I can't wait to meet everyone :)

bethany

Bethany Roachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15594829886404750986noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21770307.post-21899607432245046072009-01-09T09:50:00.004-05:002009-03-09T16:20:28.572-05:00Wedding Bells!Hey there,

Happy New Year!

I told you I had some good news to report in 2009.
