Don Weller: 20 Outstanding Los Angeles Designers, 1986

Don Weller is a designer, illustrator and painter. His career in Los Angeles included doing graphic design and illustration, which included posters for The Hollywood Bowl, covers for Time and TV Guide, and stamps for the U.S. Post Office. He also illustrated stories in Sports Illustrated, Boys' Life and Readers Digest. Don went into partnership with Dennis Juett to form, Weller and Juett, Inc., which continued to win him accolades as an outstanding designer and illustrator.

Mr. Weller also taught at UCLA, The Art Center College of Design and numerous Colleges and Universities
in California, Arizona, Utah, Texas, and Washington state.

Don's work has been featured in Idea, Graphis, Photographis, Typomundus 20/2, American Institute of Graphic Arts, Communication Arts, The Art Directors Club of New York (including gold medals), The Los Angeles Art Directors Show (including gold & silver medals), and many more. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Society of Illustrators.

He currently lives on a farm in Utah with his wife, Cha-Cha, where he paints pictures of cowboys and related subjects.

A word about the Mr. Moto movies: When I first saw these films, I was afraid of the 1930's and 40's racial prejudice that was customary. In a world of early Hollywood caucasian arrogance, these movies stand apart. Peter Lorre gives Mr. Moto a very human, very likeable persona. He insisted on a very minimal amount of make-up, only giving his pale skin a bit of a tint and adding a bit of make-up around his eyes. His hair, teeth, etc. are his own. He gave Mr. Moto mannerisms to imply that he was foreign, not a stereotype. Being a Jewish man who fled from Nazi Germany, Peter was not a man who tolerated prejudice. In his own words, "Acting comes from inside. As you think, so you look and so you appear. Mr. Moto is a clever, swift-thinking, rather suave person. Well, then, I become that person. There is a typed idea of each nationality and actors think they must imitate that idea, as if Japanese or Chinese men were not as varied as we are ourselves!"
