Computer Time.....

I thought I'd post why I haven't added any new breeder listings this week - in case people are wondering why.

Two of my kids have had extensive, end-of-quarter computer projects due this week. With only one computer here, that means my hobby computer projects become second fiddle! Wish my excuse was that I was at the ARBA Convention in Texas!

Sorry about the delay - I should be able to get several listings in over this coming weekend.

Changing The Rabbit & Cavy Directory into a Database Website

This morning I intended to work on new listings and such but instead I started to plan out how I am going to change this website into a database website.

I probably would have never decided to take this step if it hadn't been for my friend in Alaska. He edged out any excuses I could come up with by purchasing Dreamweaver Studio MX for me - between this software and my current web hosting package, I have the tools to turn this website into a useful and highly-functional Breeder Directory.

I am planning to add a cool For Sale section to this directory; allowing 'members' (breeders who have listings in the directory) to enter their own for sale ads into a database. Visitors will be able to search for sale rabbits and cavies and will have many options to select; certain breeds, locations, breeders who ship, price ranges, etc.

The one thing that will certainly cause me grief is my lack of knowledge. I have never made a database website before - so it will be a time intensive task for me. Once I begin, I will probably close the current directory to new listings so I can devote all my time to developing this new website.

I am excited about it though - once it is finished, updates, changes and new listings will be so much easier to put in! I'll be able to make changes or updates to one record and the changes will be displayed on all applicable pages, without me having to edit every page manually!

Expected Delays This Week

The week of October 10 through till next Monday, October 16, I will have very little time to work on either of my websites; this does include The Rabbit & Cavy Directory.

This is the last week of high school soccer for both my boys and we have 5 games all together this week alone. This coming weekend we'll jump right into a two-day rabbit show.

Sorry for the delays - I cannot wait to get the directory site switched over to the database web this winter, so much will be easier to do then!

If you've sent your listing or change request in, I do have it and will work on them in the order I received them. Currently I have about 15 listings to do and usually can get about 3-4 in daily when my schedule opens up more (after this week is over....)

No Updates Today - Friday

This morning I did not have time to work on The Rabbit & Cavy Directory. Instead I decided to change the banner on our other site, LaReau Lops & Cavies, to remove Champangne D'Argents and add Polish, then I had to republish that entire site.

As of right now, I probably have about 30 new breeder listings and changes to make for the directory site - over this weekend I'll get caught up with most of these -

This spring, my dear buddy in Alaska bought Dreamweaver MX for me...this program has all the bells and whistles I need to turn The Rabbit & Cavy Directory into a highly functional database website. It is just going to take me some time to plan this major change.

After I accomplish this...or, whenever I accomplish this...new listings will be very easy to add, changes to listing can be made at the click of a button...and I'll just love it!

Along with this major re-do, I am planning on adding a sale section for all the breeders in our directory to use. I plan to have a free membership log-in so breeders can post for sale ads directly - I think this will be a helpful feature for all of you to use!

I am very excited about this project and can't wait to get started on it. I sure wish my friend was here to help me with it though!

Well sorry here, but I woke up this morning intending to add some new breeder listings and make changes to current listing, and you know what I did instead?

Got lost in cyberspace...yup....started by visiting a rabbitry site, which led me to another, and another.....and so on, until all the sudden I noticed that I had about 15 minutes to get rabbit chores done and get ready for work!

Oh well, will try to stay on task tomorrow! : )

Possible Changes Coming Soon

In my quest to streamline my available web time, I've come to the conclusion that I may need to make a major change to our directory. I might end up turning our directory into a database website.

I've never thought that websites using databases do that well in the search engines so I've always shied away from using asp pages.

Although the static pages I am using do much better in search engines, they are a lot of work to keep updated. As our directory ages, I am getting more and more requests to update breeder listing info. I feel it is very important to keep breeder listings current with up-to-date info but this currently-manual task is one of the most time-consuming aspects of my website.

Because of all this manual work, I find myself bogged down without extra time to move forward by improving the directory or adding new pages for new breeds, or.....working on the many many pictures I still have waiting for the breed gallery pages.

If I can turn this site over to a database setup, updating and changing listings will become a breeze to do and allow me more time to work on adding breed pages and keeping pictures updated.

This is nothing more than a thought at this point...I need some help to begin this project.....so I'll keep you all posted if I actually decide to move forward.

Forms in The Rabbit & Cavy Directory

Alright, after several frustrating hours of trying to figure out what is wrong with my forms for submitting breeder listings and changes, my network provider emailed back and reported that apparently they 'fixed' something, although I don't know what.

Either way, it appears the forms are working although when I email myself a test form from home, I don't get it for about 6 hours....... but when I was at work today and tried a test breeder listing, it was immediately sent to my home email as it is supposed to be.

Go figure....

Send in your listings using the new forms and hopefully all will work correctly.

Well, I'll be back to working on listings tomorrow

Monday Website News

Well, we've been gone at a rabbit show, and the other day I left off with some forms that were not working...

They are now working but they do not immediatly send me the info. For some reason, I do not get the info for about 6 hours.... Hmmmm don't know what is wrong.

Go ahead and send your breeder listing and change requests, they will just be delayed getting to me. I guess that doesn't matter much especially when I am still behind with all the change requests and new listings anyway!

I'll continue to work on the problem.

This morning I added several new breeder listings and made changes to some existing listings...more about these later.

I also worked on some new forms to separate requests for premium, standard and changes to listings to ease problems I have with people sending in info for these categories. After working for several hours on these scripts and new pages, I finally finished - only to discover I've got a mistake somewhere and the forms are NOT sending the emails to me!!!

I do not have time to fix it right now as I've got a busy day ahead of me, plus a rabbit show to get ready for - so this will have to wait until Monday. Plus, I think that if I actually try to keep working on this problem right now I may end up throwing my computer into my front yard, or engage in some other regretful move. This morning I only added one new breeder listing.... Woodland Rabbitry, a Mini Rex breeder from Michigan.

I started out ready to put several more in then thought I better shift my focus and spend some time making changes to listings.....several breeders have requested changes such as adding new websites, changing websites and changing breeds and such. I still have another day's worth of changes to current listings to make, hopefully I'll get these finished tomorrow morning and then continue with new breeder listings.

Recently I added a new line onto our Submit Your Rabbitry/Caviary form, asking how long you've been breeding rabbits or cavies. I will be adding this info to listings to assist those looking for experienced breeders. Plus I will be adding highlighted icons next to this line in the actual listing as it may help to indicate, at a glance, those who've attained 5, 10, 20 and 25+ years' experience as breeders- I just haven't made an icon I like yet...but look for this soon!

As you already know, I am still behind with new listings. Currently working on those received on or about September 1. I know waiting can be a bit frustrating, but I am doing the best I can to get caught up - please realize this is not a paying project for me, so I do have to work everyday. Oh I'd love to just sit at home and work web all day, but that is not going to happen! I'm sure I'll get caught up something this month then be back to putting listings in as quickly as I used to......

End of August News

Seemingly my daily life is getting busier and busier....I don't know where all my time is going but I do know I've had relatively little time to work on new breeder listings.

Currently I am working on listings I've received around August 21 and 22nd, so I am a bit more than a week behind. Now this doesn't seem too bad until I realize I am receiving several new listing requests each day!

I also try to work on breeders' requests for updating info in their listings...sometimes a new email address or website link or even the addition of a phone number. These changes take just as long to make as it does for me to put a brand new listing in, but they are important to stay on top of. After all...an outdated website full of bad links is not very helpful!

If you sent your listing in, please please be patient! I'd love to work on my site for endless hours each day to get everyone in immediately, but that just doesn't pay my bills, so I grudgingly have to leave for work after only a short time working web each morning.

One thing you all can do to help is to make sure the info you send me is accurate and complete - I've spent a lot of unnecessary time searching for missing info from listing requests and this really slows me down!

Another important point is to make sure our links are on your site if you request a premium listing.

As always, I'll email you once I've put your listing in - please check your new listing for accuracy and let me know of any mistakes or changes you want!

Let me know about your state! Where are the good feed stores? Do you know of a rabbit club in your state? Do you keep up with legislation that affects our rabbit and cavy breeders rights, in your state? Let me know what is going on so I can put this info on your state's page.

This morning I added some new rabbit club info to our new Oklahoma Rabbit & Cavy Breeders page

The Tulsa Rabbit Breeders Association is a long-standing, all-breed ARBA sanctioned club in Oklahoma. Although this club doesn't have a website, I do have the secretary's contact info listed on our Oklahoma page.

We also listed the link to a newer Holland Lop club in Oklahoma, who enjoys members from several states; Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas so far. Visit the Oklahoma Holland Lop Rabbit Specialty Club for more info on their upcoming August 26 show featuring not only a Holland Lop specialty show, but also a multi-breed specialty show!
