It could be end of the year jitters but that doesn't feel right. I'm strangely nervous about Obama not getting things done fast enough to appease the nation, but that too can't be all of it. I feel more and more like my job is in jeopardy, so that's probably it. Might just be a combo of everything, but it sucks.

I started reading Beat the Reaper this week and it's pretty good so far. It's about a medical resident who is in the witness relocation program after being a mafia hitman. It's entertaining and that's always good.

If you like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, check out Alec Ounsworth's new album Mo Beauty. It was recorded in New Orleans and has a few Katrina related songs. It's hit and miss, but the hits are really good.

I also got Modern Warfare 2 yesterday and man alive, it's fun.

As for new tv, watch Modern Family and Community. Best new comedies by far. Flashforward is entertaining too, but it's no Lost.

Who's ready for Mad Men to start again? Holy crap what a great finale.

We're late to the Breaking Bad party but we recently watched the first season on DVD and I'm adding it to the favorites list. It's suspenseful, funny, and well acted. Great great show.

Now I'm off to bathe the kids and hopefully get them to bed soon after.

Oh, and I got my first two rolls of Holga pics back and they're pretty cool. Last night it was Hellraiser. We missed the first 20 minutes or so, but holy shit, that movie is a mess. Guy escapes from hell (assumed), manly woman lures lonely guys back to house for hell escapee to kill, oozy guy uses dead guys to reform himself, younger girl with unfortunate jeans opens a Pandora's box of sorts and brings back four demons, said demons take guy back to hell after nailing him with hooks on chains, unfortunate jeans girl puts box back together and sends demons back to hell, guy with awesome handpainted shirt arrives at the end, demon bird skeleton hobo takes box, said box appears to now be in the Middle East or in a northern African marketplace. There's your 1987 Clive Barker horror in a nutshell.

I also turned it on some crappy slasher movie hoping to see some boobies and all I got was a girl's ass. It wasn't even a good ass.

All in all, it was another great Halloween. Kids got candy. We gave out alot of candy. I ate some candy. It's about the death of arty cinema that has crazy/disgusting scenes in order to shock the world. Here's a quick description of one of the movies:

What's a film festival without a scandal? When Lars von Trier's Antichrist debuted at the Cannes film festival it prompted boos, cheers, derisive laughter, and angry complaints that the Danish provocateur (Dancer in the Dark, Dogville) had really gone too far this time. Von Trier, mixing horror-movie conventions with art-film angst, assaulted the audience with hard-to-watch depictions of genital mutilation, bloody orgasms, and a heroine cutting off her clitoris with scissors.
Antichrist was but the latest in a long, long line of shock-tactic art films that follow a principal enunciated by Baudelaire and Rimbaud in the late 19th century: épater le bourgeois. This cinematic tradition can be traced back at least as far as 1929, when Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí began their surrealist classic Un Chien Andalou with a depiction of a man slicing a woman's eyeball open.

Who doesn't like a good, bloody orgasm every now and then?

Where the Wild Things Are

We took the boys to see it this morning and everyone but Logan cried. It is a sweet, sad movie with amazing visuals and a look into the world through a child's eyes. Most movies with/for kids don't have complex emotions, loneliness, sadness, and a feeling of being completely misunderstood as a focus, but this one nails it. Each of the wild things embodies an aspect of Max or a member of his family, which through the course of the movie helps him to understand how life and love work. Jonze and Eggers capture perfectly what it's like to be a kid. Very, very good.

Her politics...

might be retarded but them titties are a-ok with me. I think of stuff to write while at work and by the time I get home, it's all gone. Right now, I'm listening to The Very Best on Lala. Pitchfork gave it an 8.6. It's Afropop. It's not too bad. I'm apparently Ian from High Fidelity now.

Lindy is at her cake class learning how to do stuff with fondant. I made a baseball player out of it a couple of weeks ago. YES!

The boys are behind me playing Jedi math on the Leapster.

We wrestled earlier.

We played a very quick game of Monopoly in which Logan bought everything then got hit with a Community Chest card asking him for $150. He had $38. I didn't explain all the mortgaging stuff, so I win.

Connor is wearing only a shirt. I don't know why.

I'm catching up on two years worth of McSweeney's quarterly concerns now, but other books are calling out to me.

Playoff baseball starts soon. Go Cards!

Speaking of baseball, I won my fantasy league this year. Way to go team Nigel!

My mascot was a garden gnome wearing a Cards hat.

I made gnocchi with chicken, roasted peppers, and a Gorgonzola, white wine, and cream sauce tonight. It took awhile, but wasn't half bad.

The kids hated dinner and had jellies.

I've been playing Batman: Arkham Asylum on the ol 360. It's fun fun fun.

Why do kids feel compelled to stand right in front of the television? Logan will start off on the couch and slowly creep his way forward until he gets yelled at, then he comes back and the process starts again.

Connor is singing "Psycho Killer."

Looking for new music? Check out the XX. They're really laid back. It reminds me of the Notwist, but better.

I'm going to go watch Jeopardy now.

I've been cleaning and staying under the radar

Hey there, ho there. It's been awhile since I posted anything. Things have been happening, but I haven't had the time. At work, they're going to be canning 5500 people, so no more posting at work for this chemist. I don't want to give anyone any reason, no matter how dumb, to put me on that list. At home, the dog ate a rabbit or some other critter and has been puking and shitting since Sunday. It's fun to come home after a full day of work and spend an hour scrubbing out stains. That's what I've been doing.

I got the new Pearl Jam cd, I give it a "meh" so far. I also got Rain Machine (Kyp from TVOTR) and it's ok, but has some really too long songs on it. In the mail, I got my Third Man Records Vault pack which is awesome. It had a t-shirt, mono 180gram vinyl version of Elephant, and a 45 with two Dead Weather cover songs. All limited edition. All fantastic.

What will I do if I get fired? Glad you asked. You care so much. I've been kicking around the idea of being a private investigator. Cool hats. Beautiful dames. A drinking problem. What more could you ask for? I could be the next Gene Parmesan, Emerson Cod, or Sam Spade!

I'm going to enjoy my beer now.

Oh, and how about Mackenzie Phillips fucking her old man for ten years. John Phillips makes Ryan O'neal look good.

Marathon man... When I tried to start it after picking up the boys, it wouldn't and it's not the battery. All the lights and stuff worked, but it made a harsh metallic clicking noise. So, Lindy came by and got us. Then, when we went back out to leave the keys for the tow truck, it miraculously started, but the engine light was on. Now it sits at Saturn waiting to aid the mechanics in the anal raping of my wallet. The sign on the key drop off says that for non-warranty cars, it starts at $90.26 just for the diagnostic (that's right Lindy, $90.26). What an arbitrary fucking number. I'm hoping it's something easy and my car will be back tomorrow. If it's something crazy expensive, I maybe getting a new car. 2004 Saturn Ions usually sell for an average of ~$6000-8000, so we'll see what happens. At least the gods smiled down upon me so I didn't have to pay a tow service.

Chupacabra!

Dios mio!

Whitney Houston's comeback

Sure she's trying to make a comeback with her new album, but I will always love her for this and this. I can't explain it. Maybe the cool air reminds me of walking to college classes and pushes the fact that I'm in my 30s to the back of my brain. I know it's not yet fall and that it's supposed to still be hot, but man alive, I love the fact that it's already getting cooler.
