Sarah Dickinson and the Grange Ward Focus Team would like to say Thank You to everyone who voted in the local elections on May 3rd.

In a close result, Sarah was elected as one of the three councillors to represent Grange Ward on Oadby & Wigston Borough Council.

Grange was one of 5 losses for the Conservatives in Oadby and Wigston, which means they have 5 councillors on the new council to the Liberal Democrats ' 21 councillors.

Refuse / Recycling collections delayed

Due to the poor weather conditions, not all the usual refuse and recycling collections were made on Thursday, 8th February.

If icy conditions continue into Friday 9th February there may be more missed collections.

Residents who are not collected on these days will receive a double collection on the following week, the 15th and 16th February.

The refuse and recycling contractors apologise for any inconvenience to residents.

Road works on Gartee Road

The County Council web site has some details about the road works on the B582 Gartree Road at the junctions with Shady Lane, Stoughton Road and Gaulby Road over the next 7 weeks or so.

The description is "Traffic Calming/Carriageway Resurfacing"

There will temporary off-peak signals. Also be aware that the road will be completely closed at some point for resurfacing. I will post any further information here when it appears on the County Council web site.

The County Council provide an estimated start date of 06/03/06 and estimated end date of 23/04/06

Added 19/3/06:
The County Council web site explains that there have been several accidents at the junctions of Shady Lane, Stoughton Road and Gaulby Lane in recent years. This stretch of Gartree Road is currently subject to the national speed limit of 60 mph.

The road alterations include:

A mini-roundabout at the junction of Gartree Road and Stoughton Road, with high friction surfacing and improved street lighting.
High friction surfacing on the approaches to the Shady Lane Junction.
Improved road signs and markings throughout.
A reduction of the speed limit along Gartree Road from 60 mph to 40 mph from the BUPA hospital to past the junction with Stoughton Road. Also a 50 mph limit covering the junction of Gartree Road and Gaulby Lane.
A reduction of the speed limit along Stoughton Road from 60 mph to 40mph from the end of the existing 30 mph limit, past the University Sports Grounds and up to the Gartree Road junction.

Spring Plant Sale

Date: Sunday 2nd April, 10am to 3.30pm
Venue: Brocks Hill Visitor Centre, Washbrook Lane, Oadby.

Stalls will include specialists on:- fritillarias, hellibores, wood anemones, corydalis, bamboos, arums, ranunculus and spring bulbs.
Children can decorate plant pots with their own design (a small charge will be made for this activity).
The centre, cafe & country park are open all day.

Environment Day

Oadby & Wigston are holding an Environment Day on Saturday 18th March from 10am to 4pm at the Council Offices on Station Road, Wigston and Brocks Hill Environment Centre, Washbrook Lane off Wigston Road, Oadby.

There will energy-saving and recycling advice and products, including 1000 free energy saving light bulbs and cut-price compost bins.

The next Oadby Forum is on Wednesday 1st March at 7.30 pm (between 7 pm and 7.30 there will be a "surgery" if you want to speak to a councillor or officer)

Location: Barnabas Centre, Hamble Road (off Severn Road), Oadby.

Have you had a garden ornament stolen or purse go missing?

I have just received this from the Leicester & Leicestershire South Neighbourhood Watch Association. It is being circulated to residents in Oadby:

"Police at Wigston request that anyone who has had a garden ornament go missing during the last week and not reported it stolen to contact them. Also anyone who has had a purse and contents go missing. The latter particularly applies to elderly residents. A man has been arrested in possession of these articles but their provenance has yet to be established.

2006 Compost Collection Dates

Oadby & Wigston Borough Council have just issued new compost collection dates for 2006. These are the large reusable green canvass bags for garden clippings, vegetable peelings and so on. You can obtain more bags from Client Services on (0116) 272 0572. Many houses in Grange Ward have large gardens but you can have more than one bag.

Alternatively you can home compost and use it to improve your garden. You can buy discounted compost bins from £6 each (up to 3 per household) from the County Council (Tel 0845 073 2001 or download a form to post here). More information on this can be found on the County Council's web site

If you have any queries about the regular black, green and brown bag collections or need more black and green bags, contact client services on 288 8961 or client.services@spam.oadby-wigston.gov.uk (remove the spam. in the email address - this is to help prevent them receiving spam)

Remember you need to leave the bag(s) at the edge of your property for collections.
