Here's what we said about it earlier. Hope everyone enjoys the reprise of the exhibit.

Just in time for spring greening and Earth Day, Master Gardeners Alice Sheppard and Karen Colburn have created an exhibit about Gardening with Nature. Gardening with nature is philosophy and practice that supports gardening as stewardship of our natural resources. Gardening with nature examples include: building healthy soil using composting techniques rather than commercial fertilizers, limiting chemical pest control, selecting the right plant for the right place, and enhancing habitat for wildlife. The Library exhibit features resources on the ecology of gardening, soil science, landscaping for wildlife, and plant identification. Anyone can garden with nature, and there are many publications and web sites to guide the novice or the expert gardener.

The Gardening with Nature exhibit is part of the ongoing efforts of the University of Maine-Presque Isle Green Campus Action Committee. The Green Campus Action Committee is charged with promoting strategies that limit negative environmental impacts on campus, and maximize benefits to the environment.

The Library exhibit theme was chosen to tie in with our University Day theme, Building Global Respect: Our Environment and Ourselves. University Day, April 16, highlights student projects and campus research. For a schedule of events, go to http://www.umpi.maine.edu/.

northernlibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14342458347626166031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2095680095998752386.post-82917711668790629052008-05-08T15:13:00.002-04:002008-05-08T15:16:49.583-04:00New Titles Link Added to HomepageSeveral individuals have asked for a listing of recently received items at the library. The most significant difference that users notice after the upgrade is the use of the brief citation display in search results lists. This feature shows more information about items in the results list than previously. We also have the option of increasing the number of results that display.

northernlibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14342458347626166031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2095680095998752386.post-75103250074167335882008-04-10T19:23:00.002-04:002008-04-10T20:21:22.435-04:00Gardening With Nature, At the LibraryJust in time for spring greening and Earth Day, Master Gardeners Alice Sheppard and Karen Colburn have created an exhibit about Gardening with Nature. Gardening with nature is philosophy and practice that supports gardening as stewardship of our natural resources. This week-long acknowledgment of the valuable contributions women made throughout history was nationally recognized in 1981, and expanded to the entire month of March in 1987. During this celebration, communities throughout the United States sponsor special programs focusing on women in history.

The National Women's History Project (http://www.nwhp.org/) chose Women's Art: Women's Vision as this year's theme. Their goal is to "honor the originality, beauty, imagination, and multiple dimensions of women's lives." Five of the artists selected by the project are featured in this month's library exhibit: Judy Chicago, Faith Ringgold, Miriam Shapiro, Lorna Simpson, and Jaune Quick-To-See Smith. While each of these artists is notable for her own unique perspective and creative spirit, they share a dedication to concepts, experiences, and causes that intrigue and involve all of us. Books highlighting examples of these artists' works will be on exhibit at the Library until April.

northernlibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00904181806551640371noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2095680095998752386.post-88582071363531601942007-12-13T21:25:00.000-05:002007-12-13T21:38:02.186-05:00Winter at the LibraryWhat do Robert Frost, Jan Brett, Thoreau, and Edwin Teale all have in common? An appreciation for SNOW. Whether you enjoy winter best by reading your favorite author, or by studying nature as you hike, ski, or snowshoe, winter offers us many opportunities to gain a new perspective on cold and snow. Our library exhibit this month highlights nature's winter gifts, and more information about local snowshoeing/skiing areas and birding in winter.

northernlibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00904181806551640371noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2095680095998752386.post-13674411697570115052007-12-13T21:12:00.000-05:002007-12-13T21:24:15.143-05:00New Titles Available at the UMPI LibraryThe following are a few of the new books available in the library:

Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide by Henry Jenkins

Locked Out: Felon Disenfrachisement and American Democracy by Jeff Manza and Christopher Uggen

Making Sense of War: Strategy for the 21st Century by Alan Stephens and Nicola Baker

Thinking Outside the Box: A Contemporary Television Genre Reader edited by Gary R. The new ScienceDirect license will provide access to faculty, staff and students at all campuses through the end of 2011. ScienceDirect is a critical research tool, with highly-cited journals that cover topics in the life, health, physical, and social sciences.

To access ScienceDirect, go to the database listings on MARINER

northernlibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14342458347626166031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2095680095998752386.post-36066468169096496912007-08-28T15:52:00.000-04:002007-08-28T15:53:44.704-04:00New databasesThe library has two new campus databases.

JSTOR: A digital archive of complete back files for 360 core scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Many date from the 19th century. We subscribe to Arts & Sciences II portion of the database. JSTOR's moving wall policy means that there is a gap from 2 to 5 years between the most recently published issue and the date of the most recent issue available in JSTOR.

Project Muse: Indexes and provides full-text access to over 220 journals from 37 scholarly publishers. Project MUSE covers the fields of literature and criticism, history, the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, gender studies, economics, and many others starting in 1993.

These databases are available from on and off campus through our databases page at the library web site. If you have questions on these resources or would like a demonstration call the Reference Desk at 9602.

northernlibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14342458347626166031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2095680095998752386.post-36680112651750778962007-08-28T15:43:00.000-04:002007-08-28T15:52:10.626-04:00Welcome to the start of a new semesterWelcome to the start of a new semester at the University. We have been busy over the summer with projects that we hope will make it easier for you to use the library. The changes we've made were requested by you last spring through the library survey (LibQual). You asked us to make it easier to find the periodicals/magazines. We've moved all of the paper magazines together. They are now located on the second floor to your right if you use the south stairwell. You also asked about additional group study spaces. With moving the magazines together, we've been able to create additional group study on the first floor by the front door. Most of the group spaces have electrical outlets for your laptops. We've added a television running CNN as well to the space, in case you want to catch up on what is happening in the world.

northernlibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14342458347626166031noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2095680095998752386.post-73551351898270726642007-05-16T14:34:00.000-04:002007-05-16T14:35:28.254-04:00Public library has new web siteThe Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library proudly announces the new library Website!
