Bed and Breakfast in Italy: how to choose

If you are supposed to know exactly what to expect from a Hotel, it is not always easy to predict what you are going to get in case you are willing to book a bed and breakfast in Italy.

If with hotels the universal rating system (stars) should work properly, with other types of accommodations such as bed and breakfast, independent apartments, guest houses and country inns, the situation is quite different. In these cases you have to trust what you see and what you read.

Serious innkeepers and companies promoting these types of accommodation should be as transparent as possible. You should be able to know exactly the location (the use of an interactive map surely helps), you should be able to see as many rooms pictures as possible, a broad description and a list of facilities/amenities available at the accommodation.

What about reviews? Are they candid? I must confess that many times a review or a guest comment could be more misleading than a bad picture. How you know about other people standards and requirements? Maybe they were on a budget and for them a shared bathroom was more than ok, and they were extremely happy just for the fact that have spent 5 euros less than in another accommodation.

What makes you referent more reliable is when they offer the possibility to talk with somebody: if you are booking a bed and breakfast and you are thousands miles away, the best and most relaxing thing is to know that you have somebody to talk to and to interact with, somebody who is able to answer your questions and clarify every single doubt. Even if by e-mail or by phone you should be able to deal with humans and not with automatic systems.

Find an Italy accommodation website which deal mainly with bed and breakfast and which is listing not all of them. Choose a website with a few selected accommodation and look for pictures, maps, descriptions and read as much as possible…. And then, talk (by e-mail of phone) with somebody.

A rich programme of events for this year's Carnival starting with traditional happenings such as 'The Flight of the Angel' and the 'Feast of the Marie', and with new ones, such as Maurizio Scaparro's Carnival of Theatre, with performances dedicated to the Chinese cuture and art ('The Dragon and the Lion'), and a line up of shows for children within 'The Unforbidden City'. Young people will gather in the area of Rialto, in Santa Margherita Square and in the Maritime Station, with music and entertainments. Beyond the historical centre, Piazza Ferretto in Mestre will host music and entertainments for young people and children, and city theatres will stage several shows, not to mention the traditional events within the Carnival of the Brenta Riviera and the Terra dei Tiepolo.

Smart Tourist in Venice

The tourist board of Venice together with the city hall have written ten suggestions for a pleasant stay. We have reported this document for your information:

1) Get a map of the city and remember that Venice is much more than just St. Mark's Square.

2) Show respect for the city by helping us keep it clean: never throw litter on the ground or into the canals.

3) Always wear appropriate clothing. Keep right when walking in the city street. Never stop on bridges. Take off your backpack when on the city boats.

4) Remember that St. Mark's Square and the surrounding area is an open-air museum (people who picnic in the square and leave litter behind will be subject to fines).

5) Get a Venice Card and use it. The Card offers many advantages and can help us to make you feel welcome in Venice.

6) Only use authorized services and transportation. Always ask what the fare will be before boarding.

7) Beware of unauthorized peddlersand watch out for pick-pockets.

8) Venice is subject to frequent flooding. A warning siren announces exceptionally high tides. You can still visit many areas of the city by using the wooden walkways.

9) The city also has disabled access routes. For more details contact the APT or Informahandicap.

10) To exercise your rights or lodge a complaint, contact the APT Complaint Office or the Counter of Tourist Mediation.

Many points could sound ovious but.... maybe, not for everybody!

Venice: how to arrive by car

It is easy to reach Venice by car with the following motorway and road connections:

A4 from Trieste and from Turin, A27 from Belluno, A13 from Bologna, and the state roads SS.309 Romea from the Adriatic Coast, SS.14 from Trieste, SS.13 from Treviso, SS.11 from Padua.

Venice is always clearly sign posted. Once you have arrived near the lagoon, get on to the Ponte della Libertà - a long straight line with two lanes linking Venice to the mainland -follow the signs for Venice and you will arrive at Piazzale Roma.

Here you have to leave your car and start your adventure in Venice, on foot or by waterbus. Three are the parking areas at Piazzle Roma: the Autorimessa Comunale, the Garage S.Marco and the small open air car park S.Andrea. One alternative is the large car park on the Tronchetto island. From the Tronchetto Island you reach Venice by waterbus line 82. Another possibility is leaving your car in Mestre - parking it in the small car parks before you reach the Ponte della Libertà or in those opposite to the railway station of Mestre and reach Venice by bus (Line 2) or by train (ten minutes ride).

Once you have parked your car and therefore solved one of the main ploblems arriving in Venice, your adventure can start: on foot or by waterbus.
