Some pics from last night's Ganglians LPs releases show with Zach Hill and Pregnant (photos by Nick Miller. Hi-res versions available upon request).

My bro did sound and his decibel reading hit 120, which is as loud as a jet engine.

Zach Hill played as a three piece and, for the first time ever, the situation I was shooting in was simply too much for my camera: the trio played only by light of strobe, so between the flashing and the noise levels, my camera often malfunctioned and wouldn't register an image. I guess this is one of the few arguments for shooting on film. I'll link a video soon.

You could see a lot of people cover their ears in the crowd. I forgot my plugs; big mistake.

Ganglians first six songs were a revelation: the fourth track (title?) was killer, and the new songs that I'd never heard before were really punk/mod.

They'll be touring the East Coast this month. Pick up their LPs at Buffcastle.

someone prepared toasted goat cheese on mulitgrain bread with mandarins and figs. and sliced strawberries. and cornbread. and all sorts of eats. there was even a cold Mickeys!

fortune house shows = solid.

this photo is of the opener, julian elorduy (drummer for myyrs). it was like being at preschool class. i had to leave to do some work shit but i wanted to stay.

I wasn't as stoked on Wounded Lion as I thought I was going to be after hearing the Rick Ele pitch. They were cool and brought an energy that you just don't see among local bands, but were a bit too goofy, still. The guy in the middle playing tambourine was zany. A lot of dad jeans and pop rock.

I went to the block party for a bit before the Abe Vigoda/Vivian Girls show: what a dud. I feel bad for the organizers because it was barely one-third full and Wyclef's set was pretty weak--cover songs and greatest hits, all three of them.

Otherwise I was sick as a pig on Sunday and just sat around smoking pot out of an apple bong ... until a crow ate some of my apple and the weed (I bet that crow is dead/fucked up, which makes me feel kind of bad).

Silver Darling at R5 Records on Record Store Day

Kevin of SD said some dude showed up early at R5, bought all the limited-edition Tom Waits 7-inches and is probably hawking them on eBay as we speak. Bummer.

Definitely not in the spirit of RSD, dude.

Anyway, the band's set was nice. The audience is way more receptive to its upbeat tracks, though, so I hope they play more of those in the future.

Silver Darling will gig with Knock Knock on May 2 at the Fun Garden (1050 20th Street, 8pm, $5).

that fly-sex photo still creeps me out a bit. took it on my balcony.

dibs guy in the left-field bleachers at the coliseum is a piece of work. he was wearing a leather raiders hat and a ken stabler jersey, yelling "dibs guy" until said guy delivers desired dibs.

the a's lost 8-5. bullpen blew it.

the folk show at atelier on friday was just ok; all the acts sounded the same, skewing meek. and being un-microphoned made it harder to enjoy. and sea of bees being drunk kinda rained on her set.

johnny flores' new ink drawings at cuffs are excellent. amy scott's show at fun garden is great, too!

wavves was loud and fun but the crowd was eerily silent in-between songs. maybe would have been a better show at a house? it was like a tomb in there ...

Woah! Tree climbing is seriously a rad and repression-proof job. Got to learn how to get up them trees, but don't have the upper body strength.

Eating lunch at La Piedad, this taco truck on Northgate and West El Camino, probably won't help. Here's some steak and seasoned pork ones. Highly recommended. Much busier than the nearby La Mex. Viva street food.

Had a barbecue on Sunday--ribs, chicken, "cheese rice" (a Missouri thing), Acme bread with garlic/butter, tomato salad, Elvis Presley wine from Healdsburg. And a dog begging like a slut.

It's nice when an early evening walk becomes something unexpected.

I was snapping boring shots of Midtown's dying palm trees (anyone else noticing this?) and the Vagicorn spray-paint tagging when I ran into Daniel White kicking off "BBQ blast '09" on the sidewalk out front of his pad.

I went home to photograph Amy eating popcorn but later took Leroy back to the BBQ Blast, which was a good time but unexpectedly lacking in actual BBQ fare, which is funny because who throws a BBQ without anything to grill.

Later at the Press Club Sister Crayon and the New Humans played at the fourth-anniversary party. This was the best SC set I'd seen yet, but I really would like to see them more focused, more rehearsed, because I think--and I hate writing things like this--that they could be a huge band. HUGE!

Hella Last Night: the Other Poets, Live Manikins, CITYSTATE - The Press Club - 03.25.09

Random showed up in a coat and jeans and hung out in the back of the room then went on stage and just ripped it. Prozak is not the most dynamic rapper, but he's awesome and really busts out high WPMs.
Live Manikins with--thankfully--DJ Rated R, his first show back.
