(Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Lady Eagles hosted the division leading Atlanta Silverbacks tonight at Restart Field. Despite scoring the opening goal, the Lady Eagles could not hand Atlanta. Christine Latham scored three goals to lead the Silverbacks Women to a 4-2 victory over the Lady Eagles.
Charlotte and Atlanta battled in the midfield for control of the match though much of the first half, but it was the Lady Eagles who took the first lead of the match. Defender Ashley Swinehart pushed up the right side into the midfield and played the ball forward for Schemedes on the run. Schmedes danced around the last Atlanta defender and beat Atlanta goalkeeper Allison Whitworth with a well-placed shot inside the left post.
Just as the Lady Eagles seemed to be heading to halftime with a 1-0 lead, the Silverbacks women scored in the 45th minute. Former Lady Eagles forward Sarah Steinmann connected with Christine Latham to split the Lady Eagles defense. Latham beat Lady Eagles goalkeeper Laura Armstrong to send the match to halftime deadlocked at 1-1.
The Lady Eagles started out the second half a bit flat and Atlanta took full advantage with another goal by Christine Latham in the 47th minute. This time Latham was played in by Molly Franklin, creating a fast break. Armstrong rushed out from the net in an attempt to suppress the attack, but Latham put a shot up over Armstrong and into the left side of the goal.
Christine Latham completed her hat trick in the 67th minute. Atlanta lofted a ball into the congested box toward Laura Armstrong. Armstrong got to the ball but it rebounded to Latham who poked it into the goal.
Jill Porto extended the Atlanta lead to 4-1 in the 68th minute off a penalty kick. Tamires Gomes was whistled for a hand ball just inside the Charlotte 18 yard box. Porto stepped up to take the penalty and beat Armstrong with a shot into the right side of the goal.
Charlotte cut the lead back to two goals in the 77th minute off a free kick from 50 yards out. Lydia Vandenbergh took the free kick, putting up for Ashley Swinehart in the box. Swinehart got up for a beautiful header, redirecting the serve and beating Whitworth inside the left post.
The 4-2 loss was and unfortunate result for the Lady Eagles who had several periods of quality play and possession through the match. Atlanta was successful in exploiting a few key Charlotte lapses and doing well to finish the opportunities.

Herrera Scores Two in 4-3 Win at Wilmington

Eagles Have Clinched Playoff Berth

(Wilmington, NC) - The Charlotte Eagles pro soccer team faced the Wilmington Hammerheads on the road Saturday night. Jorge Herrera scored two goals to lead the Eagles in a 4-3 victory. Charlotte, 10-1-4 for 34 points, has clinched a berth in the USL-2 post-season with five games remaining in the Eagles' regular season.
Wilmington entered the match ready to go and had the better of the play in the first 25 minutes. Brian Civilikas put the first point on the scoreboard in the 15th minute, heading in a serve from the right side by Chris Murray.
Charlotte responded in the 39th minute, capitalizing on a corner kick. Jorge Herrera took the corner kick from the right side and played it short to Joseph Kabwe up the endline. Kabwe layed the ball off to his right for Herrera. Jorge Herrera scored with a left-footed shot that found the back of the net with the help of a deflection.
The Eagles took over the lead just two minutes later with a goal by Robert Ssejjemba. Charlotte had a beautiful build up on the play, stringing along 5-6 passes. Ben Johnson got the ball on the right side on an underlapping run. Johnson made a great cross to find Ssejjemba wide open for the header and the goal.
Jorge Herrera scored his second goal of the match in the 43rd minute to give Charlotte a 3-1 lead. Charlotte played the ball forward from the midfield to Dustin Swinehart. Swinehart layed the ball off for Herrera who blasted a left-footed shot from 12 yards out. Herrera's shot went bending around to the right side of the goal to beat Wilmington goalkeeper John O'Hara.
Wilmington cut the Charlotte lead back to one goal in the final minute of the first half, when the Hammerheads were awarded a free kick for a Charlotte foul, 25 yards out. Tray Alexander took the free kick for Charlotte. Alexander's struck a pretty shot that bent over the Charlotte wall and beat Eagles goalkeeper Terry Boss on the left side. The first half ended with the Eagles up 3-2.
The Charlotte Eagles dominated play early in the second half. Jonah Long scored the first goal of the half in the 62nd minute. Joseph Kabwe served the ball in from the left side and found Robert Ssejjemba. Ssejjemba poked the ball back out to the top of the 18 yard box for Long who scored with a long hard shot to beat O'Hara.
It looked as if the match would close with a 4-2 victory for Charlotte, but an odd senario in stoppage time gave Wilmington a final chance to score, and they capitalized. Wilmington was awarded an indirect free kick in the final seconds of stoppage time, when Terry Boss was whistled for holding the ball too long in the box. Trey Alexander took the shot off the indirect free kick to score his second goal of the match off a set piece.
The Charlotte Eagles return to home field action on Saturday, July 19th when the Eagles will play host to the Real Maryland Monarchs. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 pm at Restart Field. Murphy Leads Lady Eagles in 3-0 Win

The Charlotte Lady Eagles faced the Carolina Railhawks Women tonight at WakeMed Soccer Park. Tina Murphy led the Lady Eagles to a 3-0 victory tallying three goals and one assist. Kelly Schmedes scored the other goal for Charlotte.

Tina Murphy got the Lady Eagles on the scoreboard early in the match. Veteran Midfielder Lulu Quigley assisted on the opening goal by Murphy in the third minute of play.

Twenty minutes into the match it was Murphy on the offensive once again, but this time she set up Kelly Schmedes who finished to put the Lady Eagles up 2-0. Charlotte carried that 2-0 lead into the halftime break. Though the shots in the first half were recorded with six a side, Charlotte had the better of the play for much of the half and most importantly they were able to capitalize on chances.

The final goal of the match came in the 57th minute to give the Charlotte Lady Eagles a 3-0 lead. Veterans Christy Rife and Tina Murphy combined on the goal with Rife earning the assist and Murphy posting her second goal of the match. Charlotte out-shot Carolina 4-3 in the second half. The Railhawks earned three corner kicks from their offensive efforts, but again had trouble capitalizing to produce a goal.

With tonight's victory the Lady Eagles improve to 10-1-1 on the season for 31 points. The Lady Eagles remain in second place in the W-League Atlantic Division standings, just two points behind the undefeated division-leading Atlanta Silverbacks. Charlotte has just two games (both home games) left in the regular season, facing Atlanta next and finishing up hosting West Virginia.

The Lady Eagles will have their last chance to hand Atlanta its first loss on Saturday, July 12th at Restart Field. Kick off for that match is set for 7:00 pm. Lady Eagles Top Railhawks 1-0

(Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Lady Eagles hosted the Carolina Railhawks tonight at a rainy Restart Field on the campus of Charlotte Christian School. Nikki Lyons scored the lone goal of the match to give the Lady Eagles a 1-0 victory. With the win, Charlotte's record improves to 9-1-1, for 28 points, while the Railhawks drop to 4-4-1, for 13 points.

Charlotte carried most of the possession in the first half and had some periods of strong pressure resulting in several cornerkick opportunities. The Railhawks played conservatively, sitting in and looking for opportunities off the counter attack. The closest chance of the opening 30 minutes came when Railhawk midfielder Lindsay Vera picked off a Charlotte pass and fired a shot past Lady Eagles goalkeeper Laura Armstrong, but Vera's shot missed the target. Charlotte responded just minutes later with a nice combination between Kelly Schmedes and substitute forward Nikki Lyons down the right side. Lyons served the ball in for Charlotte attacking midfielder Lydia Vandenbergh, but Vandenbergh didn't muster enough power on the shot to beat goalkeeper Anna Rodenbough.

Schmedes helped create another positive attack for Charlotte, pushing in behind the Railhawk's defense. Schmedes hit a low driven cross into the congestion in front of the goal where both Lyons and Murphy had close attempts. Carolina goalkeeper Anna Rodenbough was there to deny the opportunities. Despite the late scoring chances the half ended at 0-0.

Charlotte opened the second half with two quality opportunities in the first ten minutes. Kelly Schmedes and Nikki Lyons continued to combine well together and had a great opportunity up the right flank. Then Lydia Vandenbergh sent a ball from distance that carried over Rodenbough and off of the crossbar.

Carolina's first chance of the second half came off a midfield giveaway, resulting in a good shooting chance for fresh substitute Carrie Patterson, but Laura Armstrong was up for the task in the Charlotte goal.

Charlotte finally broke through and put one on the scoreboard in the 74th minute off a Tina Murphy cornerkick. Murphy's kick found Nikki Lyons who got up for the header, directing the ball into the back of the net.

The game wore on with no significant scoring chances until a foul was called on the Lady Eagles on the end line, five yards from the edge of the 18 yard box. Laura Novikoff headed the cross away but Carolina's Ali Baker drilled a shot back toward goal, forcing a save by Armstrong. Carolina nearly tied it with a great chance in injury time. Ali Baker ran onto a ball that found its way through the Charlotte defense, but Baker's shot was put over the crossbar. The Lady Eagles fought off a late Carolina surge to preserve the 1-0 result.

The Lady Eagles and Railhawks will face each other again next week, this time at Carolina's home field. Charlotte's next home game is on Saturday, July 12th at Restart field. The Lady Eagles host the undefeated Atlanta Silverbacks Women, with kickoff slated for 7:00 pm.

Kabwe Scores in 1-0 Victory Over Monarchs

(Boyds, MD) The Charlotte Eagles played their eleventh game of the regular season on the road tonight facing the Real Maryland Monarchs. Joseph Kabwe scored the lone goal of the match to earn Charlotte a 1-0 victory over the Monarchs and maintain the top spot in the USL-2.

Charlotte got off to a great start in the match. Veteran defender Josh Rife and forward Rob Ssejjemba combined for a great chance in which Rife narrowly missed to the left of goal from 18 yards away.

Real Maryland responded immediately, and in the 5th minute a partial clearance led to Ronald Cerritos attempting a dangerous volley which was just deflected out for a corner.

In the 31st minute, Charlotte had another great chance as Ssejjemba got free for a header but missed just over the crossbar. Once again, Maryland countered as midfield catalyst Dennis Alas got free on the right side. Alas played a ball across the goal, just out of reach of the sprawling Perez at the far post.

The Eagles and Monarchs found themselves deadlocked, 0-0 at the halftime whistle after a fairly even performance in the first half.

Maryland came out playing very well in the 2nd half, and should have taken the lead in the 49th minute. Alas struck a ferocious free kick from the right side which was saved by Boss. The rebound fell right to Maryland defender Andy Kish who had the entire goal at his disposal but he put the ball over the crossbar.

The missed chance seemed to deflate the home side as Charlotte began to gain control of the game. A mistake in defense by Marcos Chantal almost gave them the lead in the 53rd minute, but Jorge Hererra missed his chance at goal with a miss-hit shot.

In the 65th minute, some lazy defending by Maryland, coupled with questioning positioning by goalkeeper Emilio Zelaya, allowed the always dangerous Dustin Swineheart in behind the defense. Swinehart struck his shot high and wide of the goal.

Charlotte finally broke through in the 73rd minute. Defender Ben Johnson took a long throw-in from the right side, finding Dustin Swinehart at the near post. Swinehart flicked the ball on to the far post for Joseph Kabwe. Kabwe, eight yards out from goal, blasted a shot past Zelaya to take the 1-0 lead.

Alas had one last chance to pull Real Maryland even in the 86th minute when he sent one of his trademark, blistering free kicks just wide of the goal from 35 yards away.

Maryland pushed forward for the remaining minutes, which left them exposed in defense, but Zelaya made several saves to keep the game at 1-0. Charlotte earned its eighth win of season and the Monarchs slumped to their fourth straight league defeat.

The Charlotte Eagles are right back in action on Tuesday night for another US Open Cup match. This time, in the second round the Eagles face the Charleston Battery of the USL-1 at Charleston. The winner of the match will go on to face 2006 and 2007 MSL Cup champion Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer. Should the Eagles win, they will host the Dynamo in Charlotte on July 1st.

Carolina is in the middle of the W-League Atlantic Division Standings at 3-5-2 for 11 points. The Lady Eagles and Dynamo women played once previously this season, and Charlotte came away with a 3-2 victory back on May 16th at Restart Field.

The Charlotte Eagles pro team and the Charlotte Lady Eagles w-league team are both on the road this weekend for league play. The Eagles pro team face new-comer to the league, the Real Maryland Monarchs on Saturday, June 21st. Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles face the Carolina Dynamo Women on Saturday. Eagles @ Real Maryland Monarchs

The Eagles pro team currently sits atop the USL-2 standings with a 7-1-2 record for 23 points. Charlotte faces Real Maryland this Saturday in Maryland. The Monarchs have had a tough start to their inaugural season with a 3-6-0 record for 9 points. Their best showing of the season was in the 3-2 victory over current number two Cleveland City Stars.

Charlotte must not take the team lightly though. The Monarchs certainly have some talent on their team, and the Eagles are in the midst of their busiest run of the season, with Open Cup matches adding to an already full schedule. Saturday kicks off a long stretch for the Eagles, with an Open Cup match in Charleston on Tuesday and a two game weekend on July 27th and 28th. Should the Eagles defeat Charleston on Juen 24th, then the Eagles will host the '06 & '07 MLS Champion Houston Dynamo on July 1st in Charlotte.

Lady Eagles Face Carolina Dynamo

The Charlotte Lady Eagles face the Carolina Dynamo Women on Saturday night. The Lady Eagles (8-1-0, 24 pts) are tied with Atlanta with 24 points thus far this season, but Charlotte has played one more game than Atlanta, and the Lady Eagles' only loss is to Atlanta.

Carolina currently sits in the middle of the W-League Atlantic Division Standings at 2-5-1 for 7 points. The Lady Eagles and Dynamo women played once already this season, and Charlotte came away with a 3-2 victory back on May 16th at Restart Field.

The Charlotte Lady Eagles hosted the Richmond Kickers Destiny on Saturday. Donning the pink kits in brest cancer awareness for the Komen Foundation the Lady Eagles secured much of the early possession, but were unable to produce great scoring chances. Richmond was able to generate the most quality scoring chances with three shots on net in the opening 35 minutes. Richmond was content with sitting in a conceding possession and their compressed defense thwarted and frustrated the Lady Eagles attack which seemed to dissolve as it progressed into the attacking third. This continued throughout the half which ended in a 0-0 tie.

The second half opened much like the first with Charlotte having much of the possession. Richmond defended well until 10 minutes in Lulu Quigley avoided confrontation and served in a ball which Christy Rife nodded just inside the near post to open the game up for a 1-0 Lady Eagles lead. The second period wore on with Laura Armstrong untested as the Charlotte defense held tight. The Lady Eagles attack looked potent at times but were caught offside five times in the second half. The Lady Eagles broke through on a nice possession on their left side through Ashleigh Swinehart who found Nikki Lyons who then slid a ball through to Kelly Schmedes and she neatly finished. Richmond nearly pulled one back after a shot from Molly McKeon rang the crossbar in injury time, but ultimately were not able to score on the night. As it stood the Lady Eagles won 1-0 keeping themselves in second place in the Atlantic division behind Atlanta.

(Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Eagles will be hosting the second annual Kick for the Cure Night this Saturday, June 14th at Charlotte Christian School's Restart Field. The Lady Eagles and Eagles will be sporting their special pink jerseys in support of Komen for the Cure and the fight against breast cancer. The game worn pink jerseys will be auctioned off online at the Charlotte Eagles website throughout next week, with proceeds going to Komen for the Cure. All About You Salon will also be out at the doubleheader offering FREE* hair cuts to those willing to donate their hair to Locks of Love. The evening will kick off at 5:00 pm with the Lady Eagles hosting Richmond. Between the Eagles and Lady Eagles game will be a Celebrity Challenge and the men's game will kick off at 8:00pm.

The Charlotte Eagles will be hosting a special Celebrity Challenge at 7:00pm, between the Eagles and Lady Eagles game on Saturday night. Participants will take shots at the Bojangles' shootout board. The Eagles will donate up to $2500 to Komen for the Cure based on the shooting success of the participants.

(Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Lady Eagles played their second game in two nights at Restart Field. Tonight they hosted the Bradenton Athletics. Lydia Vandenbergh lead the Lady Eagles, scoring two goal in the 5-0 shutout of the Athletics.

The Lady Eagles controlled the flow of the match in the first half, with the pace hampered by the Charlotte heat. Charlotte scored the opening goal of the game in the 37th minute off a cross from the left side by Kelly Schmedes. Lydia Vandenbergh got a touch on the serve from Schmedes and then poked it into the net past Shannon Aitken from about four yards out. The first half ended with the Lady Eagles up 1-0. Charlotte out-shot Bradenton 9-2 in the half.

Tina Murphy extended the lead for Charlotte in the 49th minute. Charlotte worked the ball up field and put it out wide to Christy Rife. Rife continued down the left flank and then served it across for Murphy. Murphy scored with a well placed shot from 8 yards out, putting the ball just inside the right post.

Veteran midfielder Lydia Vandenbergh scored the third Charlotte goal in the 54th minute. The goal was set up with a cross from the left side from Tina Murphy. Murphy found Christy Rife at the far post. Rife got a head on the cross. Rife's header came out to Vandenbergh who scored with a well struck volley from 12 yards out.

Nikki Lyons looked to add the fourth goal in the 61st minute firing a shot on goal from the middle, but Bradenton goalkeeper Shannon Aitken made a beautiful diving save to deny Lyons the goal.

Two minutes later Christy Rife put the Lady Eagles up 4-0. Christy beat a defender at the top of the box, found some space and placed a bending shot around the goalkeeper and just inside the right post.

Nikki Lyons got the goal she was looking for in the 66th minutes. Lydia Vandenbergh set up the goal with a through ball onto the run of Lyons. Lyons ran right at goal and scored with a low shot past Aitken.

Charlotte returns to home field action on Saturday, June 14th hosting Richmond in a doubleheader evening with the Eagles pro team. The Lady Eagles will kick off at 5:00pm followed by the Eagles hosting Western Mass at 8:00pm.

The Charlotte Eagles will host their round one Open Cup match this Tuesday, June 10th at Restart Field, 7:00pm. Charlotte will play host to the Clearwater Galactic of the USASA. (Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Lady Eagles hosted the Tampa Bay Hellenic tonight at Restart Field.

Tampa Bay opened the match in dominating form nearly scoring in the early moments and capitalizing on a quick possession through the midfield when Stacy Bishop was able to find a goal side Alicia Tirelli who out ran the Lady Eagles defense and slid a shot underneath Laura Armstrong.

The Lady Eagles were able to get their feet under them and possess the ball in the blazing heat. In the 17th minute a Christy Rife ball found the feet of Nikki Lyons who cruised past a Tampa Bay defender and slid a ball across the six finding a wide open Kelly Schmedes who calmly finished to draw Charlotte even.

The half continued with Tampa Bay having another good scoring chance about 32 minutes in with a nice combination resulting in a break away. Tamires Gomez did not give up on the play and was able to run the play down and keep the Tampa Bay forward from a clean strike and Laura Armstrong collected.

Gomez would put her print on the game again in the 39th minute with a brilliantly weighted first time diagonal ball that dropped just over the Tampa Bay defender onto Tina Murphy's chest. Murphy neatly collected and secured the goal with a solid finish.

The Lady Eagles were not done though. Lulu Quigly was able to slide a through ball to Kelly Schmedes who carried the ball fighting off a defender in route to a lifted ball bast Tampa goalkeeper Katy Fraine giving Charlotte a 3-1 comeback lead at halftime.

The second half opened with the two sides sharing possession and no real dangerous opportunities. Nikki Lyons opened up the lead for the Lady Eagles as she opportunistically gathered a ball and beat a Tampa Bay defender and feed an open Christy Rife who was met by Fraine but was able to tackle the ball through her and roll the ball into the vacated net.

Tampa Bay would pull one back after a corner kick was deflected off of the line but Tampa Bay won the second ball which was fed in from Rhonda Jones to a free Alicia Tirelli who flicked it behind her leg past Laura Armstrong to make the score line 4-2. Tampa Bay nearly drew even after Jordan Danielle cleared a ball that had been chipped over Armstrong and the rang the post moments later.

Despite the late efforts the Lady Eagles were able to solidify the win to take them to 6-1 and still in second place behind Atlanta in the Atlantic division. The Lady Eagles will play tomorrow night at 7pm at Restart Field, not at UNC Charlotte as the ticket says.

Lady Eagles Suffer First Loss

The Charlotte Lady Eagles were in Atlanta Friday night for the second and final game of their week long road trip south. The Lady Eagles beat Bradenton 3-0 on Wednesday. The Lady Eagles sat atop the W-League with Atlanta so the game was sure to produce high level play and intensity. Besides the high skill level brought by both teams the dense humidity would prove to test the player's fitness as well.

Charlotte started the match confidently controlling the possession in the early goings and testing the Atlanta net. The game did open with a bit of a frantic pace as both teams battled to control the play. Atlanta would open the scoring however with a goal from Lyndsey Patterson in the 16th minute. Krista Bobo was able to find time and drive a ball into the Charlotte box that met the open Patterson who nodded a header over a leaping Laura Armstrong. The goal turned the momentum from Charlotte to Atlanta's favor for the next 20 minutes. The Lady Eagles responded though as Christy Rife capitalized on a poorly cleared ball in the Atlanta box and neatly finished the opportunity to even the scoring in the 35th minute. However, Atlanta was not to trail as Sarah Steinmann finished another Bobo cross just a minute later giving Atlanta the lead going into half time.

The Lady Eagles would respond and hold tough in the second half. Their attack would be absorbed for much of the match until Tina Murphy was able to nod a header into the Atlanta net to even the scoring. The game wore on fairly evenly as both teams tried to gain another goal. The heat was taking its toll and both teams substituted fairly early to keep fresh legs.

The game would turn late as Atlanta was able to spring substitute Molly Franklin who controlled a pass and was 1v1 with a Lady Eagles defender who was called for a foul in the Charlotte penalty area. Sharolat Nonen stepped up and cooly placed the spot kick past a diving Laura Armstrong. The game ended seconds later for a harsh finish to a greatly contested game.

The Lady Eagles return home to Restart Field at Charlotte Christian School next Saturday June 6th to open a double header against Tampa Bay. The Eagles play Richmond on Tuesday June 3rd and play Pittsburgh in the second game of the June 6th double header.

Lady Eagles Win 3-0

The Charlotte Lady Eagles defeated Bradenton 3-0 on Tuesday night. The Lady Eagles extended their undefeated streak in the effort as they traveled south. Charlotte started out like they have much of the season dominating in possession and opportunities on net. Christy Rife started the scoring in the 13th minute when she punched one in the Bradenton net off of a deflection from a Kelly Schmedes cross. The game went 24 minutes without another score until Nikki Lyons finished a breakaway in the 37th minute. The Lady Eagles were able to extend the lead to the final score line just before halftime when Kelly Schmedes finish a feed from Rife. The game wore on with more opportunities, but no capitalization for the Lady Eagles. The lead enabled them to make several substitutions which were needed for the second game of the roadtrip on Friday against the Atlanta Silverbacks who are also undefeated on the season. The Lady Eagles out shot Bradenton 12-9 and Laura Armstrong was in net to record the shutout.

As was fore mentioned the Lady Eagles will play at Atlanta this Friday. The Eagles travel to Crystal Palace Baltimore on Saturday. Charlotte and Crystal Palace sit atop of the USL-2 standing currently. The Eagles will the play Richmond at home on June 3rd and the Lady Eagles play at home next on June 6th as the lead game for the doubleheader scheduled that night on Restart Field.

Lady Eagles Take Two in Virginia

The Charlotte Lady Eagles traveled to Hampton Roads and played on Friday night where they were able to leave with a win after a scrappy contest. The game was even for much of the first half which was played at a fairly frantic rate. The Lady Eagles and Piranhas battled to a 0-0 halftime tie. The evening was fairly even with no team really being able to establish possession for much of the game. The Lady Eagles had a tough time finding a clear rhythm throughout the match, but were able to capitalize on a corner kick late in the game. Tina Murphy played a ball deep to the far post where Kelley Schmedes was able to receive the ball, cut it back across the box, and slide one into the back of the Hampton Roads net. The Lady Eagles were able to hold of the rest of the Piranhas attack for a few minutes to seal the deal and head off to Richmond.

Charlotte was able to find more success as they ventured east to Richmond to take on the Destiny. With their legs a little heavy from a long match the day before the Lady Eagles tried to posses the ball more and have Richmond chase them. Lee Horton's game plan was well executed as the Lady Eagles cruised to a 6-0 win. Abby Crumpton opened the scoring in the third minute after a feed from within the box from Tina Murphy. The game stayed at 1-0 until veteran Christy Rife scored and assisted in the last three minutes. Rife received a ball cut back from the inline by Kelley Schmedes for a goal in the 42nd. Rife then played Kelly Lyons through on a breakaway for Lyons first of the game at the 45 minute mark. Lyons scored twice more to open the second half to give her a hat trick on the night. She received from Lydia Vandenburg at 50 minutes and Tamires Gomez at 65. Lyons would then assist to Shmedes in the 89th minute to end the lucrative night for the Lady Eagles. The Lady Eagles out shot the Destiny 26-6 producing 12 saves from Richmond. Laura Armstrong and Katie Forbis split in goal for the shutout for the Lady Eagles

Lady Eagles to Play U-20 National Team

The Charlotte Lady Eagles will head down to Clemson University to play the under 20 National Team at Riggs field at 3:00. The Lady Eagles are coming into the friendly with a two game winning streak after a successful road trip to West Virginia two weekends ago and a successful home opener against the Carolina Dynamo this past weekend. The Under 20 National Team is preparing for the U-20 World Cup coming later this summer.

In more Eagles news both the men and the women will be traveling this weekend for league games. The Eagles will head north to Richmond to play the Kickers. Charlotte defeated last years USL 2 finalist 3-0 earlier this season at home. However, Richmond has had some key signings since the game and will pose a strong defense against the Eagles undefeated record. The Eagles enter the game at 4-0-1 after tying defending champions Harrisburg last weekend. The Lady Eagles will travel to Hampton Roads and play the Piranhas on Friday then they will travel to Richmond on Saturday for a match against the Kickers Destiny.

The Lady Eagles will be without defender Shelly Lyle as she has been called up to the U-23 National Team which is in Germany currently preparing for the Nordic Cup in Sweden later this summer. Lyle has spent time with the U-23's previously and has traveled abroad with them before. The Lady Eagles will miss Lyle's strong presence anchoring their defense, but are very excited for her and this opportunity.

Lady Eagles Fight Back for Victory

(Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Lady Eagles played their first home match of the 2008 season tonight hosting the Carolina Dynamo at Restart Field. Charlotte earned their second win of the season to remain undefeated with a 3-2 win over the Dynamo.

Much of the first half consisted of even play back and forth with the teams battling for possession in the midfield. The Lady Eagles settled in toward the end of the half and it paid dividends in the 42nd minute with a goal from Christy Rife. Kelly Schmedes set up the goal sending it forward onto the run of Rife. Christy sped down the right side and took a tight angle shot from eight yards out. Rife's shot slipped under the outstretched leg of a Carolina defender and beat goalkeeper Powers low, inside the left post.

Charlotte came out fired up to start the second half, fueled by the first half goal from Rife. Tina Murphy extended the lead to two goals, just three minutes into the half. Lady Eagle's veteran midfielder Lydia Vandenbergh collected the ball on the right side. Vandenbergh touched the ball forward for Tina Murphy. Murphy poked the ball through the legs of a Dynamo defender, hopped over a tackle and touched it past the goal keeper into space. Murphy tracked down the ball on a sprint and scored with a sliding shot into the open net.

Just as Charlotte felt comfortable with the two goal lead it was gone. Hailey Beam scored two Dynamo goals just three minutes apart in the 53rd and 56th minutes. Beam's first goal was a long range shot, catching Charlotte goalkeeper Laura Armstrong off her line. Beam's shot floated over the head of Armstrong and went in just under the crossbar.

Callie Simkins set up the second goal for Beam with a through ball into the box. Beam scored with a shot lifted over Armstrong, beating her for the second time up high.

The Lady Eagles seemed shocked by the two quick goals by Carolina to even up the score despite Charlotte's control of possession in the half. The women kept their heads high stayed composed through the remained of the second half. Charlotte heightened the pressure in search of a game winning goal and they got it in the 63rd minute off a corner kick. Tina Murphy took the corner from the left side, and lofted it into the six yard box. Cassidy Powers knocked the ball down with her outstretched arms. Kelly Schmedes got to the loose ball and buried it in the back of the net for the game winner.

Charlotte's victory tonight extends its record to 2-0-0 while the Dynamo are still looking for their first victory of the season with this their third loss. The Lady Eagles play their next four games on the road, and return to home field action to host Tampa Bay on June 6th and Bradenton on June 7th.

The Charlotte Lady Eagles professional soccer team will have their first home game on Friday at 5:30 at Charlotte Latin School. The club is holding a Media Day on Thursday, May 15^th at 10:30 am. Media will be a great way for Charlotte area media to get a first look at the 2008 squad, interview players and coaches, and get some live shots of the team in action during practice. Media Day will be held at the Charlotte Latin practice field and media personnel will be provided with a 2008 media packet and 2008 Season Media Pass.

The 2008 Charlotte Lady Eagles have an exciting season ahead of them with a good mix of returning players and fresh talent on the squad. The Eagles are making the move to South Charlotte for the majority of the 2008 season, playing at Restart Field in Charlotte Christian Stadium.
Charlotte in its 16^th season is celebrating the 25^th Anniversary of its parent organization, Missionary Athletes International.
Lee Horton enters his 9^th season at the helm for the Lady Eagles. He has been named USL Coach of the Year and was inducted into the NC Soccer Hall of Fame last January.
The Lady Eagles will have a great returning foundation. Several returnees have been named to the All W League team. Tina Murphy brings 8 years of experience with the Lady Eagles and was named 1^st Team All W League last season. Asley Swinehart, Kelly Schmedes, and Christy Rife all bring lots of experience and have also been named to previous All W League teams.
Some key additions include Danielle Jordan, Heather Dittmer, Ashleigh Gunning, Shelly Lyle, and Beckah Brady. Lyle is a member of the U-23 US National Team. Jordan, Dittmer, and Gunning attended local universities in college of Charleston, Western Carolina, and Coastal Carolina respectively.
Tamires Cassia Dias Gomes and Leticia Rodrigues Da Silva bring some foreign talent in from Brazil. The tandem hails from the famed Santos FC, the same club that Pele played for.
Jordan Edwards hopes to help out the Lady Eagles on her home pitch. Edwards enjoyed an illustrious career at Charlotte Christian School from whom she just graduated and will be playing at NC State in the fall.
The Lady Eagles hope to continue their form from a great spring which included a trip to Ethiopia. Several players were able to travel to Ethiopia where they were able to play the Ethiopian National Team whom the defeated 3-0.

Lady Eagles Open 2008 Season with 3-0 win

(Morgantown, WV) - The Charlotte Lady Eagles opened the 2008 W-League season tonight on the road facing league newcomer West Viginia Illusion. Charlotte shutout West Virginia in a 3-0 victory for the Lady Eagles.

Charlotte and West Virginia played a fairly even first half of the match but it was Charlotte that scored the lone goal in the half. About 25 minutes into the half Christy Rife played the ball in behind the West Virginia defense for Kelly Schmedes on the right side. Schemedes sped down the right sideline and served the ball into the middle. Schmedes' serve was deflected by the West Virginia defense into the line of attack of Lady Eagles veteran forward Tina Murphy. Murphy hit a left-footed shot off the inside of the right goalpost and into the net to put the Lady Eagles up 1-0.

The Lady Eagles stepped up their pace in the second half, recording two more goals. Five minutes into the half Charlotte's pressure awarded them a corner kick. Tina Murphy took the kick and found Kelly Schmedes in the box. Schmedes redirected the serve with a header to the near post, extending the Lady Eagles lead to two.

First-year Lady Eagles' forward Laura Novakof scored the final goal of the match for the Lady Eagles in the 78th minute. The attack began once again with a run in behind the defense by Kelly Schmedes. Schmedes' shot was saved and came back out for Nikki Lyons who made an attempt of her own. The third shot by Laura Novakof was the charm that extended the Lady Eagles lead to 3-0 and sealed the victory for Charlotte.

The Charlotte Eagles pro team earned a win of their own tonight. Dustin Swinehart's goal in the 65th minute to put the Eagles on top of the City Islanders 1-0 on City Island in Harrisburg, PA.

The Lady Eagles play their next match on Friday, May 16th for their first home match of the 2008 season. The game will kick off at 5:30pm at Charlotte Christian School's Restart Field in a doubleheader evening with the Charlotte Eagles Pro Team (8:00pm kickoff). Swinehart Earns Player of the Week Honors

Charlotte Eagles veteran forward Dustin Swinehart was named USL-2 Player of the Week. Swinehart kicked off the 2008 season with a bang on Saturday night, scoring four goals in the Eagles 6-0 win over the Bermuda Hogges. Charlotte Eagles vs. UNC Charlotte in a Preseason Scrimmage

(Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Eagles pro team will face UNC Charlotte in a preseason scrimmage tomorrow night at UNC Charlotte's TransAmerica Field. Tomorrow nights match is a great chance to get a first look at the 2008 Eagles squad before the season opener at UNC Charlotte on Saturday, April 19th.

LADY EAGLES WIN OPENING MATCH

OF ETHIOPIA TOUR

The Charlotte Lady Eagles Ethiopia Tour soccer team kicked off their 2007 Ethiopia tour with a match against an Addis Ababa women's all-star team. The Lady Eagles triumphed in the match with a 3-2 victory.

The Lady Eagles got behind quickly when the Ethiopian team scored their first goal in less than five minutes off of a defensive miscue. The Lady Eagles did not let the early goal affect them and they were rewarded ten minutes later with a goal by Nicole Cauzillo from Kansas University. Nicole hit a shot from the top of the eighteen that beat the keeper on the inside of the left post.

Five minutes later Kelly Schmedes drove down the left wing to the six yard box where she played the ball cross the middle. The Ethiopian keeper deflected the ball out to Alison Becker who slotted her shot past the keeper into the goal to lead the score 2-1.

Approximately ten minutes before the end of the first half, the Ethiopian national team member, Berticam, curled a shot into the top left corner from around 22 yards out to tie the score. The half ended 2-2.

The Lady Eagles fought through fatigue brought on by the high altitude of Addis Ababa (8300 ft) during the second half. With about 15 minutes left to play, Kelly Schmedes took a ball switched from the left side to go one on one with the goalie. The ball got by the keeper but Nicole Cauzillo got her second goal and game winner by sliding in ahead of a defender to finish the shot. The Lady Eagles left the field exhausted but grateful for the opportunity to play this all-star Ethiopian team.

The Lady Eagles arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Wednesday night after leaving Charlotte last Tuesday. The Lady Eagles were invited to Ethiopia by Sports Friends and the Addis Ababa Football Federation. The Lady Eagles spent the first few days visiting the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, the Mother Theresa AIDS orphanage and another orphanage adopted by the US Embassy, as well as doing clinics with another women's team and a youth team. The team expects to play another match next Sunday against another top Ethiopian team.

In keeping with the organizations desire to provide quality professional sports entertainment in an affordable, family-friendly evironment, the Charlotte Eagles will offer the 2008 season ticket packages and individual game tickets at the same great 2007 prices. Season ticket packages include admission to all regular season home games for both the Charlotte Eagles professional team and the Charlotte Lady Eagles W-League team. There are four ticket packages available for 2008 including a Family ticket package (One low price for the whole houshold), an Adult Season ticket package (saves over 50% off gate prices), a Student Season ticket package (for elementary to high school students) and an Eagles Flex Pack (8 tickets to use in any combination of games and can be split up between people). The Eagles will play their first game back at Charlotte Christian on Friday, April 25^th against the Richmond Kickers. Charlotte will look to avenge its 2007 USL-2 Semi-Final loss to Richmond that kept the Eagles out of the USL-2 Championship for the first time since 2003. The Eagles will also see some new faces in the league as Real Maryland begins its expansion season in the USL-2, and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds return to the league after a 1-year hiatus. The 2008 Lady Eagles will begin their 9^th season in the USL's W-League against expansion franchise West Virginia before opening at Charlotte Christian against the Carolina Dynamo Women on May 16^th. The event on May 16^th will also be the first home doubleheader of 2008 as the Eagles will face the defending USL-2 Champion Harrisburg City Islanders following the Lady Eagles match. They're Back! - Lady Eagles Return to South Charlotte/Matthews

Will Play 2008 Season At Charlotte Christian

The Charlotte Lady Eagles are bringing women's elite soccer back to the South Charlotte/Matthews area, and will play their 2008 seasons at the campus of Charlotte Christian School.

Charlotte Christian School Information:

Charlotte Christian School, Christ-centered, college preparatory school for junior kindergarten through twelfth grade. Founded in 1950, the school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The school is located on 55 wooded acres in southeast Charlotte.

In 2006, a new synthetic field and drainage system was installed. The rubberized texture has allowed for less slipping and sliding and seems to have aided in less injuries for student-athletes.

With Charlotte Christian's intimate atmosphere and large field turf surface, fans can be sure to expect an open, fast-paced game that will provide entertainment to all that attend. The close proximity of the campus to locations such as SouthPark, the Arboretum, and downtown Matthews will also provide fans easy access and plenty of options before and after games.
