The night began with strong play from the Washington Freedom as they looked to defend their 2007 W-League title. <div>&nbsp;</div> <div align="center">&nbsp;<img height="200" alt="Lydia Vandenbergh Tracks Hoffman in the Conference Semi-Final" src="http://wleague.uslsoccer.com/imgs/home/ecpo-wash-huffman.jpg" width="340" border="0"></div><br>Washington put on the pressure from the beginning and got on the board in the second minute. Christy Welsh received the ball from Emily Janss with her back to the goal and standing just outside the box. She turned to the inside, blew through the defense, and placed the ball to the left of Charlotte goalkeeper Laura Armstrong. <br> <br>Charlotte began to string together a bit of passing and was able to score the equalizer in the 11th minute. Nikki Lyons got the ball to Christy Rife who just got a foot on the ball and was able to deflect it into the side netting. <br> <br>Washington quickly regained possession and continued their assault on the Charlotte defense. Washington&#39;s Ella Masar fed the ball to Welsh in the center of the box and Welsh sent it to Armstrong&#39;s left for her second goal on the night, putting Washington up 2-1 in the 16th minute. <br> <br>Washington continued to dominate possession as several players got a look at the goal. In the 22nd minute, Washington scored their third goal of the match as Madison Keller lifted the ball past Armstrong off a feed from Sarah Huffman. <br> <br>Charlotte got down the field in the 28th minute and was able to get on the board again to come within a goal of the Freedom. Charlotte&#39;s Kelly Schmedes received the ball from Nikki Lyons, nimbly moved past her defender and finished with a fine shot to the far side netting past an outstretched Chante Sandiford. <br> <br>Masar was forced to make an early exit in the 31st minute after sustaining an injury. Rebecca Moros came on for Masar and play continued with both teams getting some looks on goal. Charlotte had a good chance in the 44th minute, but the shot by Schmedes was saved by Sandiford and the follow up by Lyons was sent into the side netting. <br> <br>Late in stoppage time, Charlotte&#39;s Tina Murphy uncorked a long-range shot that Sandiford just tipped over the bar as the ball dipped toward the goal. <br><br>Washington had some good chances to start off the second half, but Charlotte got on the board first to draw the game even at 3-3. Murphy scored straight off a corner for the Eagles. <br> <br>During the 66th minute, Charlotte took the lead for the first time in the match. Charlotte took a free kick that got cleared out to Schmedes, who placed the ball perfectly to Lyons at the center of the box. Lyons&#39; one-timer beat Sandiford and Charlotte took the lead 4-3. <br> <br>Four minutes later Welsh drew a foul inside the area and Moros evened up the match when she placed her spot kick on the ground to the right of Armstrong. <br><br>As the match wore on, the Freedom carried the momentum. Washington&#39;s Ali Andrzejewski had a great shot on goal, but Armstrong continued her solid play and was able to push it away off the far post. Armstrong was tested a few more times, but she stood up well to the Washington onslaught. As stoppage time wound down, Charlotte made one last attempt to get the ball down field, but they were stopped by Washington just past midfield and regulation ended in a 4-4 tie. <br> <br>Washington began the scoring early in extra time as Emily Janss tallied her first goal on the night. Janss received the ball from Huffman on the right flank, pushed through the defense, and tucked the ball into the right side of the goal. <br> <br>Washington got on the board again in the 103rd minute and cushioned their lead - and they&#39;d need it. Lori Lindsay took a corner for the Freedom and Huffman tipped it to Christie Welsh, who finished it to complete her hat-trick. <br> <br>Charlotte continued to fight and was able to draw within a goal in the 107th minute. Murphy took a free kick just outside the area and placed the ball over the wall and to the keeper&#39;s left. <br><br>As extra time wound down, Charlotte pushed forward in attempt to find the equalizer. They had several good looks on goal, but they were never able to get it into the back of the net and the match ended in a 6-5 win for the Freedom. <br> <br>The Freedom will next play tomorrow at 8 pm when they look to claim the Eastern Conference title and earn a trip to the final four in Virginia Beach, VA. They will face the winner of the match between the Atlanta Silverbacks and the Long Island Rough Riders in the second match of the semifinal doubleheader. <br> <div>&nbsp;</div><strong>Historical Footnotes:</strong><br><br>The 11 goals scored tied for second most in the W-League&#39;s 14-year history, equaling the Eastern Conference Final showdown in 2004 that saw the New Jersey Wildcats advance 6-5 in regulation against the Montreal Xtreme, who played a 5-4 overtime thriller the night before against the defunct Long Island Lady Riders. French star Marinette Pichon scored the opening three goals for New Jersey in the game before Montreal mounted a rally to tie the game 3-3 and again at 4-4 before two more goals from Pichon in the final five minutes of regulation provided a two-goal margin that proved just enough as Montreal only netted once more before the final whistle. The league record is 13, set in the W-2 Western Conference Championship in 2001 in which the Kansas City Mystics and Oklahoma Outrage, both now defunct, played an back-and-forth thriller. Kansas City led by two after 19 minutes with Oklahoma drawing level in the 36th only to see the hosts reclaim a two goal lead before halftime. Oklahoma scored four straight goals to open the second half to erase the deficit and make a two-goal margin of their own as they went on to score six in the half. <br> <br>Only three other teams have scored more than six goals in a W-League playoff game. In addition to aforementioned Oklahoma Outrage of 2001, the Maryland Pride tallied seven in a 7-0 drubbing of the Hampton Roads Piranhas in the 1997 Mid Atlantic Division Final and the Chicago Cobras hold the mark with nine in a 9-1 thrashing of Northern Kentucky in the 2003 Midwest Division Final. There have been six other occurrences of a six-goal performance in the playoffs, including one each by the two participants in tonight&#39;s thriller. Kelly Schmedes led Charlotte with four goals and one assist in the 7-0 shutout over the Illusion. The Lady Eagles finish off the regular season with a 11-2-1 record for 34 points and second seed in the Atlantic Division.</div> <div style="TEXT-ALIGN: left" align="left">&nbsp;</div> <div style="TEXT-ALIGN: left" align="left">West Virginia brought just ten players to Restart Field tonight, and the Lady Eagles took control right from the start. Charlotte scored the first goal of the match in the second minute of play. Nikki Lyons raced down the right side of the pitch, with Illusion defenders sprinting back to catch up. Lyons drove a cross into the middle for Kelly Schmedes. Schmedes and West Virginia goalkeeper Andrea Kominski got to the cross at the same time, but Kelly Schmedes came up from the skirmish with possession and poked it into the goal for the 1-0 lead.</div> <div style="TEXT-ALIGN: left" align="left">&nbsp;</div> <div style="TEXT-ALIGN: left" align="left">Charlotte continued to pressure with more good opportunities from Schmedes, Lyons, and Rife. In the 20th minute Kelly Schmedes scored her second of the match. This time it was Abby Crumpton who set up the goal. Crumpton made a beautiful through pass forward onto the run of Schmedes. Despite scoring the opening goal, the Lady Eagles could not hand Atlanta. Christine Latham scored three goals to lead the Silverbacks Women to a 4-2 victory over the Lady Eagles.<br> Charlotte and Atlanta battled in the midfield for control of the match though much of the first half, but it was the Lady Eagles who took the first lead of the match.&nbsp; Defender Ashley Swinehart pushed up the right side into the midfield and played the ball forward for Schemedes on the run.&nbsp; Schmedes danced around the last Atlanta defender and beat Atlanta goalkeeper Allison Whitworth with a well-placed shot inside the left post.<br> Just as the Lady Eagles seemed to be heading to halftime with a 1-0 lead, the Silverbacks women scored in the 45th minute.&nbsp; Former Lady Eagles forward Sarah Steinmann connected with Christine Latham to split the Lady Eagles defense.&nbsp; Latham beat Lady Eagles goalkeeper Laura Armstrong to send the match to halftime deadlocked at 1-1.<br> The Lady Eagles started out the second half a bit flat and Atlanta took full advantage with another goal by Christine Latham in the 47th minute.&nbsp; This time Latham was played in by Molly Franklin, creating a fast break.&nbsp; Armstrong rushed out from the net in an attempt to suppress the attack, but Latham put a shot up over Armstrong and into the left side of the goal.<br> Christine Latham completed her hat trick in the 67th minute.&nbsp; Atlanta lofted a ball into the congested box toward Laura Armstrong.&nbsp; Armstrong got to the ball but it rebounded to Latham who poked it into the goal.<br>Jill Porto extended the Atlanta lead to 4-1 in the 68th minute off a penalty kick.&nbsp; Tamires Gomes was whistled for a hand ball just inside the Charlotte 18 yard box.&nbsp;&nbsp; Porto stepped up to take the penalty and beat Armstrong with a shot into the right side of the goal.<br> Charlotte cut the lead back to two goals in the 77th minute off a free kick from 50 yards out.&nbsp; Lydia Vandenbergh took the free kick, putting up for Ashley Swinehart in the box.&nbsp; Swinehart got up for a beautiful header, redirecting the serve and beating Whitworth inside the left post.<br> The 4-2 loss was and unfortunate result for the Lady Eagles who had several periods of quality play and possession through the match.&nbsp; Jorge Herrera scored two goals to lead the Eagles in a 4-3 victory.&nbsp; Charlotte, 10-1-4 for 34 points, has clinched a berth in the USL-2 post-season with five games remaining in the Eagles&#39; regular season.<br> Wilmington entered the match ready to go and had the better of the play in the first 25 minutes.&nbsp; Brian Civilikas put the first point on the scoreboard in the 15th minute, heading in a serve from the right side by Chris Murray.<br> Charlotte responded in the 39th minute, capitalizing on a corner kick.&nbsp; Jorge Herrera took the corner kick from the right side and played it short to Joseph Kabwe up the endline.&nbsp; Kabwe layed the ball off to his right for Herrera.&nbsp; Jorge Herrera scored with a left-footed shot that found the back of the net with the help of a deflection.<br> The Eagles took over the lead just two minutes later with a goal by Robert Ssejjemba.&nbsp; Charlotte had a beautiful build up on the play, stringing along 5-6 passes.&nbsp; Ben Johnson got the ball on the right side on an underlapping run.&nbsp;&nbsp; Johnson made a great cross to find Ssejjemba wide open for the header and the goal.<br> Jorge Herrera scored his second goal of the match in the 43rd minute to give Charlotte a 3-1 lead.&nbsp; Charlotte played the ball forward from the midfield to Dustin Swinehart.&nbsp; Swinehart layed the ball off for Herrera who blasted a left-footed shot from 12 yards out.&nbsp; Herrera&#39;s shot went bending around to the right side of the goal to beat Wilmington goalkeeper John O&#39;Hara.<br> Wilmington cut the Charlotte lead back to one goal in the final minute of the first half, when the Hammerheads were awarded a free kick for a Charlotte foul, 25 yards out.&nbsp; Tray Alexander took the free kick for Charlotte.&nbsp; Alexander&#39;s struck a pretty shot that bent over the Charlotte wall and beat Eagles goalkeeper Terry Boss on the left side.&nbsp; The first half ended with the Eagles up 3-2.<br> The Charlotte Eagles dominated play early in the second half.&nbsp; Jonah Long scored the first goal of the half in the 62nd minute.&nbsp; Joseph Kabwe served the ball in from the left side and found Robert Ssejjemba.&nbsp; Ssejjemba poked the ball back out to the top of the 18 yard box for Long who scored with a long hard shot to beat O&#39;Hara.<br> It looked as if the match would close with a 4-2 victory for Charlotte, but an odd senario in stoppage time gave Wilmington a final chance to score, and they capitalized.&nbsp; Tina Murphy led the Lady Eagles to a 3-0 victory tallying three goals and one assist. Kelly Schmedes scored the other goal for Charlotte.</div> <div style="TEXT-ALIGN: left" align="left">&nbsp;</div> <div style="TEXT-ALIGN: left" align="left">Tina Murphy got the Lady Eagles on the scoreboard early in the match. Charlotte carried that 2-0 lead into the halftime break. Nikki Lyons scored the lone goal of the match to give the Lady Eagles a 1-0 victory. With the win, Charlotte&#39;s record improves to 9-1-1, for 28 points, while the Railhawks drop to 4-4-1, for 13 points.<br> &nbsp;<br>Charlotte carried most of the possession in the first half and had some periods of strong pressure resulting in several cornerkick opportunities. The Railhawks played conservatively, sitting in and looking for opportunities off the counter attack. The closest chance of the opening 30 minutes came when Railhawk midfielder Lindsay Vera picked off a Charlotte pass and fired a shot past Lady Eagles goalkeeper Laura Armstrong, but Vera&#39;s shot missed the target. Charlotte responded just minutes later with a nice combination between Kelly Schmedes and substitute forward Nikki Lyons down the right side. Lyons served the ball in for Charlotte attacking midfielder Lydia Vandenbergh, but Vandenbergh didn&#39;t muster enough power on the shot to beat goalkeeper Anna Rodenbough.<br> &nbsp;<br>Schmedes helped create another positive attack for Charlotte, pushing in behind the Railhawk&#39;s defense. Schmedes hit a low driven cross into the congestion in front of the goal where both Lyons and Murphy had close attempts. Carolina goalkeeper Anna Rodenbough was there to deny the opportunities. Despite the late scoring chances the half ended at 0-0.<br> &nbsp;<br>Charlotte opened the second half with two quality opportunities in the first ten minutes. Kelly Schmedes and Nikki Lyons continued to combine well together and had a great opportunity up the right flank. Then Lydia Vandenbergh sent a ball from distance that carried over Rodenbough and off of the crossbar.<br> &nbsp;<br>Carolina&#39;s first chance of the second half came off a midfield giveaway, resulting in a good shooting chance for fresh substitute Carrie Patterson, but Laura Armstrong was up for the task in the Charlotte goal.<br> &nbsp;<br>Charlotte finally broke through and put one on the scoreboard in the 74th minute off a Tina Murphy cornerkick. Murphy&#39;s kick found Nikki Lyons who got up for the header, directing the ball into the back of the net.<br> &nbsp;<br>The game wore on with no significant scoring chances until a foul was called on the Lady Eagles on the end line, five yards from the edge of the 18 yard box. &nbsp;Laura Novikoff headed the cross away but Carolina&#39;s Ali Baker drilled a shot back toward goal, forcing a save by Armstrong. Carolina nearly tied it with a great chance in injury time. Ali Baker ran onto a ball that found its way through the Charlotte defense, but Baker&#39;s shot was put over the crossbar. The Lady Eagles fought off a late Carolina surge to preserve the 1-0 result.<br> &nbsp;<br>The Lady Eagles and Railhawks will face each other again next week, this time at Carolina&#39;s home field. Joseph Kabwe scored the lone goal of the match to earn Charlotte a 1-0 victory over the Monarchs and maintain the top spot in the USL-2.</div> <div><br>Charlotte got off to a great start in the match. Veteran defender Josh Rife and forward Rob Ssejjemba combined for a great chance in which Rife narrowly missed to the left of goal from 18 yards away.</div> <div><br>Real Maryland responded immediately, and in the 5th minute a partial clearance led to Ronald Cerritos attempting a dangerous volley which was just deflected out for a corner.</div> <div>&nbsp;<br>In the 31st minute, Charlotte had another great chance as Ssejjemba got free for a header but missed just over the crossbar. Once again, Maryland countered as midfield catalyst Dennis Alas got free on the right side. Alas played a ball across the goal, just out of reach of the sprawling Perez at the far post.</div> <div><br>The Eagles and Monarchs found themselves deadlocked, 0-0 at the halftime whistle after a fairly even performance in the first half.</div> <div>&nbsp;<br>Maryland came out playing very well in the 2nd half, and should have taken the lead in the 49th minute. Alas struck a ferocious free kick from the right side which was saved by Boss. The rebound fell right to Maryland defender Andy Kish who had the entire goal at his disposal but he put the ball over the crossbar.</div> <div>&nbsp;<br>The missed chance seemed to deflate the home side as Charlotte began to gain control of the game. A mistake in defense by Marcos Chantal almost gave them the lead in the 53rd minute, but Jorge Hererra missed his chance at goal with a miss-hit shot.</div> <div>&nbsp;<br>In the 65th minute, some lazy defending by Maryland, coupled with questioning positioning by goalkeeper Emilio Zelaya, allowed the always dangerous Dustin Swineheart in behind the defense. Swinehart struck his shot high and wide of the goal.</div> <div><br>Charlotte finally broke through in the 73rd minute. Defender Ben Johnson took a long throw-in from the right side, finding Dustin Swinehart at the near post. Swinehart flicked the ball on to the far post for Joseph Kabwe. Kabwe, eight yards out from goal, blasted a shot past Zelaya to take the 1-0 lead.</div> <div><br>Alas had one last chance to pull Real Maryland even in the 86th minute when he sent one of his trademark, blistering free kicks just wide of the goal from 35 yards away.</div> <div>&nbsp;<br>Maryland pushed forward for the remaining minutes, which left them exposed in defense, but Zelaya made several saves to keep the game at 1-0. Charlotte earned its eighth win of season and the Monarchs slumped to their fourth straight league defeat.</div> <div><br>The Charlotte Eagles are right back in action on Tuesday night for another US Open Cup match. This time, in the second round the Eagles face the Charleston Battery of the USL-1 at Charleston. The winner of the match will go on to face 2006 and 2007 MSL Cup champion Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer. Donning the pink kits in brest cancer awareness for the Komen Foundation the Lady Eagles secured much of the early possession, but were unable to produce great scoring chances. Richmond was able to generate the most quality scoring chances with three shots on net in the opening 35 minutes. Richmond was content with sitting in a conceding possession and their compressed defense thwarted and frustrated the Lady Eagles attack which seemed to dissolve as it progressed into the attacking third. This continued throughout the half which ended in a 0-0 tie.<br> <br>The second half opened much like the first with Charlotte having much of the possession. Richmond defended well until 10 minutes in Lulu Quigley avoided confrontation and served in a ball which Christy Rife nodded just inside the near post to open the game up for a 1-0 Lady Eagles lead. The second period wore on with Laura Armstrong untested as the Charlotte defense held tight. The Lady Eagles attack looked potent at times but were caught offside five times in the second half. The Lady Eagles broke through on a nice possession on their left side through Ashleigh Swinehart who found Nikki Lyons who then slid a ball through to Kelly Schmedes and she neatly finished. Richmond nearly pulled one back after a shot from Molly McKeon rang the crossbar in injury time, but ultimately were not able to score on the night.
