Toda is Gita Jayanthi- the day of advent of Bhagavad Gita. I came across this very interesting story on glories of reading Bhagavad-gita, which is quite deep in its meaning.

An old Farmer lived on a farm in the mountains with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading His Bhagavad Geetha. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could.

One day the grandson asked, "Grandpa! I try to read the Bhagavath Geetha just like you but I don't understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the Bhagavath Geetha do?"

The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, "Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water."

The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The randfather laughed and said, "You'll have to move a little faster next time," and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned home. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, and he went to get a bucket instead. The old man said, "I don't want a bucket of water; I want a basket of

water. You're just not trying hard enough," and he went out the door to watch the boy try again.

At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got back to the house.

The boy again dipped the basket into river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. Out of breath, he said, "See Grandpa, it's useless!"

"So you think it is useless?" The old man said, "Look at the basket." The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean, inside and out.

"Son, that's what happens when you read the Bhagavath Gita. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be changed, inside and out. That is the work of Krishna in our lives."

After you cleaned, now you can able to understand the meaning and know your loopholes(bad habits - impurity) inside us and we try to fill(close) that holes after that we become fulfilled for lifetime.

These are a sample of the comments recorded in the guestbook signed by hundreds of visitors to the Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah. The Rajastani-style center—the only one of its kind in the state—held the annual Festival of India celebration on Saturday, September 12th. Welcoming a crowd of over three thousand, Caru dasa and Vaibhavi Devi Dasi (both disciples of Srila Prabhupada) along with one hundred local volunteers manifested the spirit of India: serve the people loads of prasadam, crank up the krsna-kirtana and encourage cheers and claps when Ravana’s giant body is scorched to bits by flaming arrows.

Situated in a gorgeous valley surrounded on all sides by picturesque mountains, the Krishna Temple is well-known as the “place to be” throughout the year, mainly because of the various festivals that are held here. This year’s Festival of India attracted all types: energetic college students, families spanning two or three generations, and many curious and open-minded Mormons. Utah has a strong link with the Mormon Church, and their theology and lifestyle shares some important elements with Krishna consciousness. Preaching was brisk and joyful, as the festival participants were eager to learn more about the cultural and spiritual origins of the festival. Distributing Bhagavad-gita to many of the philosophically-inclined visitors was easy, since the Mormons appreciate authoritative literature.

And what to speak of the chanting! Kesava-Acarya dasa, a renowned kirtaneer from New York, along with Sri Ram on mrdanga sweetly sang the Lord’s Holy Name to the backdrop of a brilliantly setting sun. Later on in the evening a group of local devotees got everybody dancing to rock-style kirtana. Inside the temple room different groups of chanters led the packed crowds in non-stop harinama. “I thought the roof was going to cave in at one point because of all the dancing,” said Vaibhavi Devi Dasi. In addition to the all-auspicious chanting, young dancers from Abhinaya Company in San Jose, California, charmed the crowd with several styles of traditional dance. On the main stage devotees performed scenes from the Ramayana. Plus rows of booths offering such services as henna and Indian dress created an otherworldly atmosphere enjoyed by all.

The festival’s finale was especially spectacular: a 20-foot effigy of Ravana disintegrated into fiery shards before the delighted crowd. A glittery fireworks display capped off the evening.

Mercy and fun were the words of the day…all for $3 a head!

As you might know, there is a growing congregation of devotees, working hard to create facilities for practicing Krishna Consciousness in Mongolia. After having translated and printed thirteen titles of Srila Prabhupada’s books, including Bhagavad-gita and Krishna Book, and recently opened the first Govinda’s restaurant, the government granted the permission to register our society in Mongolia. The condition is that this can only be done if we build a temple first.

On one hand a pleasant request, on the other hand a serious challenge for the Mongolian congregation. Although difficult, the congregation wants to cover the purchase of the land. However, for the construction of the temple they reach out for your help and support. I strongly feel that the devotees in Mongolia deserve our heartfelt encouragement and contribution.

Utah Valley's Krishna Temple, located on South Main St. in Spanish Fork, will host the 23rd Annual Festival of India on Saturday, September 12th from 4 pm.

After 22 increasingly successful editions of the India Fest, few people in Utah County are ignorant of the fact that, once a year, you can go to India without spending a lot of money. You can have India right in the middle, of all places, ... Spanish Fork!

Over 4,000 people attended last year's celebration, and India Fest 2009 could be the biggest one yet, thanks to the enthusiastic increase of promotional efforts on the part of the organizers, the majestic, overlooking presence of the Krishna temple at the festival site, and a natural amphitheater which can accommodate thousands.

Set around the Rajastani style, multi domed temple, the eight acre festival site will feature world class entertainment, cuisine, a gift shop, art, photography, cultural exhibits on India, a gala pageant of the epic Ramayana, the burning of a 20' high ten-headed demon named Ravana, and spectacular fireworks.

Michael Jackson Received Vaishnava Books

In 1999 Satya devi dasi, of Sri Sri Radha Govinda Mandir in Brooklyn, New York, twice catered prasadam for the late Michael Jackson at private dinners for two with a man we know in New York City.

When she offered the singer a copy of the Bhagavad-gita he said he already had the book. The host then asked if the book Jackson had was Srila Prabhupada's Bhagavad-gita As It Is; Jackson confirmed that it was. When presented with a first-edition Krishna Art book, he looked through the illustrations and said he liked the paintings. He took that Krishna Art book home.

He was one of the fortunate persons in this world to honor Sri Sri Radha Govindadeva's Maha-prasdam, enjoying Radha Govinda Temple's world famous Burfi and other Mangal-arati sweets. He got Satya's gourmet prasadam cooking for dinner on two consecutive evenings, discussing reincarnation and karma at the dinner table with the host.

Satya reported that Jackson was very nice, soft-spoken and friendly. At that time he was staying in a luxury suite at the Waldorf Astoria with his daughter Paris Katherine and first son Prince Michael; his third child was not yet born. Jackson had been in New York to receive the Bollywood Outstanding Humanitarian Award.

The Great Rath Yatra of Puri

More than 10 million people will attend the Great Rath Yatra in Puri and many Million in Other cities of India on Wednesday June 24, 2009.

The Ratha Yatra (Car Festival) of Lord Jagannatha (Krishna) at Puri is the most important festival of Orissa, which attracts pilgrims from all over India. Annually, on the second day of the bright fortnight of Asadha, the images of Jagannatha, Balabhadra and Subhadra are dragged forth in a grand procession on three separate chariots along the broad street from the Sri Mandir to the Gundica temple. For its profound religious fervor, magnificence and display of colour, the car festival of Lord Jagannath is perhaps the most spectacular religious ceremony in the world.

In 2008 more than 10 million people attended the Rath Yatra in Puri. During the festival, devotees from all over the World go to Puri with an earnest desire to touch the rope of the chariot. They consider this a pious deed and risk their lives in the huge crowd. The huge processions accompanying the chariots play devotional songs with drums, tambourines, etc. Children line the streets through which the chariot will pass and add to the mass chorus. The Rath carts themselves are some approximately 45 feet (14 m) high and are pulled by the thousands of pilgrims who turn up for the event. Millions of devotees congregate at Puri for this annual event from all over the country and abroad. It is also telecasted live on many Indian channels and International channels

Rath Yatra Festival in Gujarat

The Puri Rath Yatra and the Ratha Yatras in Gujarat take place on the same day. In many cities of Gujarat like Ahmedabad, Baroda, Surat, Bhavnagar, Porbandar, Gandhinagar etc, many major cities and towns of Gujarat. Amongst the 150 Rath Yatra are being taken out in the state with glorious processions are carried out annually with devotional favor and joy.

The Rath Yatra of Ahmedabad stands next to the Puri festival in grandeur and crowd-pulling. Nowadays, there are not just the thousands of people who participate in the Ahmedabad event; there are also communication satellites which the police use under the GPS (global positioning system) to chart the course of the chariots on a map on the computer screen to monitor them from a control room. With deployment of over 15,000 police personnel en route, the Yatra is expected to be trouble free.

The Ahmedabad Rath Yatra has been taking place for more than 130 years. It starts from the Jagannath temple in Jamalpur locality in Ahmedabad city and passes through a 14 kilometers one way route. One of the main attractions during Ahmedabad Rath Yatra is the procession of caparisoned elephants. This year 2009, the procession will include 16 elephants, 98 trucks, 30 Akhadas or local gyms, 18 Bhajan groups, Music bands and devotees on foot. Around 2,000 Sadhus from across the country too are expected to join.

Over 20 lakh people witnessed the grand journey of Chariot Festival. Gujarat Chief Minister (Narendra Modi) performed the traditional ritual of "Pahind" by sweeping the path with a golden broom, paving way for the Yatra to begin and pulled the chariot till the temple entrance, from where it would traverse nearly 28 kilometers through the walled city and return back in the evening.

Over 20,000 kgs of cereal and other fruits would be distributed as "prasad" to devotees during the procession. The prajajan (people), prashasan (administration) and mahajan (business community) are working together for Successful Yatra.

Hare Krishna in Amsterdam

Hare Krishna has been a part of Amsterdam since 1971. The first temple was situated in the bijlmer and later in the middle of the Red Light District. From that place we evolved into a bigger place at the Herengracht, then to Keizersgracht and even later to the Hobbemakade. Now we have a place at the Van Hilligaertstraat 17, but that is going to change soon. Our new and bigger temple will be opened in a few months on the Wittenburgergracht.

It has been quite a history and the Hare Krishna people are a well known phenomena by now. Our yearly festival like Ratha Yatra, our appearance on Queensday and our weekly singing and dancing through the Kalverstraat have aided to this.

A Child Needs Your Attention For A Better World‏

Hunger kills 9 million people every year and 24,000 people every day and out of them 18,000 are children. 60% of the children in India go to sleep hungry every night. Half the children in the age group of 6 to 14 years do not have access to primary education. We feel, by subjecting children to hunger, we rob them of their God given potential.. India's progress in reducing child malnutrition is very slow.

The proven path to helping the poor is by educating them. Providing food works as an important factor that encourages education; this in turn enables overall development transforming lives and communities.

A hungry child cannot be expected to have an urge for education. We provide nutritious meals to children - with a vision to encourage education amongst the poor.

Law for Action

Many impoverished children performed poorly in school due to short attention spans associated with extreme hunger. Other children either did not enroll in school, or dropped out at a young age choosing to seek work during the school day to earn money to feed themselves and their families.

Education can empower a child to explore his potentials, earn a decent living and build a better future. The Government of India has made education for children in the age group of 6 to 14 years compulsory, but poverty restricts the under privileged children from getting the full value of the educational experience. Hunger obstructs education in yet another way. It affects clear thinking and productive working in children. Also medical science has proved the most of the cognitive developments occur in the age group of 6 and 12 years. Hunger and malnutrition during these years impair cognitive developments thus permanently crippling child for life time.

Earlier, school meals was irregular and in many places non-existent. Responding to pressure from the people, the Supreme Court of India passed an order on November 28, 2001 which mandated: "Cooked midday meal is to be provided in all the government and government-aided primary schools in all the states."

Major Newspaper Ranks ISKCON Vrindavana's School as Best

The Amar Ujala, a daily Indian newspaper ranked 34th in the world in circulation, has selected ISKCON’s Bhaktivedanta Gurukula and International School in Vrindavan (BGIS) as the top school in the Mathura district and the second best school in the State of Uttar Pradesh.

The selection was released in the Newspapers’ Education and Career section on 6th May.

The Director of BGIS, Ananda Vrindavanesvari Devi Dasi, was overjoyed upon receiving the news. “This is a tribute to Srila Prabhupada who opened this school in 1976. I take this as recognition of his genius in wanting schools that not only taught academics, but also focused on the moral and Krishna conscious needs of students.”

BGIS is two schools in one: the primary level Gurukula, classes 1-8 and the International School, classes 9-12. Currently, there are 200 students, primarily residential with some local day scholars. The small numbers contribute to a personal and caring atmosphere.

The students in the International School take their final exams with the ICSE Board of Education, an internationally recognised board located in New Delhi.
