The truth is 147 passengers died in a plane crash—one passenger survived, and nobody knows why. His name is Nicholas Dane and he has changed since the he first set foot on the plane. Problem is investigators aren’t sure why it went down; terrorism is under consideration, as natural causes are unlikely. Another problem is how Nicholas Dane avoided drowning after the plane hit water and was submerged for almost half a day.

Soon Dane realizes he has memories that aren’t his own and can’t place why he has them. But that isn’t the only problem, as someone wants him dead. Later, while at the hospital, a mysterious voice beckons him to run away, his life is in danger. Before he can one an attempt is made at his life.

Almost everything works in Talent #1. The only negative is the dialogue-ridden middle. But Talent is a good mystery with a good hook. And a first issue almost always has a lot of telling to do. The strengths of this issue far outweigh its weaknesses. The writing is overtly cool, blending suspense and a grasp of the improbable. The artwork is dramatically different than anything else the publisher is putting out—though not necessarily better. In the end this issue is an incredible start for a series and a team of creators with a lot of promise.Jacob Malewitzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11736917698207934001noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2037238665094257836.post-76145522059192750102008-09-21T15:05:00.000-07:002008-09-21T15:06:49.632-07:00COMPLETE Batman Vs Predator ReviewBatman vs Predator
By Jacob Malewitz
Smiles-Media.com, your home for SEO, Direct Mail, and Blog Writing

Coffee And Heroes, Defining heroes day after day, even business heroes

Writer: Dave Gibbons
Artist: Andy Kubert

Crossovers. There are so many. Crossovers are publishers way of cashing easy checks. However, every few years a crossover is made that is often overlooked. Personally I have always been a fan of both Batman and Predator, both have had movies (actually Predator was first seen on the movie screen), both are comic book characters, and both have been in novels. Batman vs Predator is a case of a crossover providing a very entertaining comic book story.

The book opens with a boxing match in Gotham. Each of the fighters are backed by two of Gotham’s biggest gangsters. When the winner of the fight is killed in his apartment shortly after the bout Batman is called to help investigate the crime. At first many believe the rival boss was angered by his fighter losing but the dead fighter had his spine and skull ripped out, which would be very unusual for a regular mob killer to do. Batman’s main goal early on is to avoid a battle on the streets of Gotham between the two mob bosses.

Batman soon pinpoints the Predator’s hideout. In a deadly duel he comes close to losing his life to the Predator. After defeating Batman the Predator begins to take out the mob bosses in a calculated fashion. Batman tries to recover from his injuries as fast as he can, he cannot even leave his bed, but the body count rises in his absence. Towards the end of the story with two mob bosses, the mayor, and countless others dead a countdown is initiated by the National Guard and SWAT. At the end of the countdown they plan to flush the Predator out of hiding by searching street by street. Batman, at last healed from his injuries, plans one last face-to-face match with the Predator.

The drawing in this book is classic Batman: published in 1992 this book takes most of its design from the Batman comics of the time. The artwork leans more towards Batman than Predator. Early in the book the imagery focuses on light, but as the story progresses the darker imagery akin to both characters comics comes back. Instead of coating the book with dark imagery throughout—both characters are known to use the shadows to their advantage—this book stands out because it goes contrary to the style the reader expects.

The story is simple, but it works. Once again Batman has to come back from near death to make one last stand to protect Gotham. He has to take his bumps and bruises before he can do this, learning about his opponent throughout. The story fits into the old man vs beast style of fiction, and does it justice. As a whole the story works: slowed down when you’re interested in knowing more, sped up when your ready for an ending.

In comparison to other crossovers this comic climbs above the rest. Instead of jumping right into the middle of action to keep the reader entertained this book focuses on story too. There are also a few suspenseful moments to keep the reader guessing. Batman has rarely faced a test like the one he faces here. The ending may be predictable, Batman sells more comics than Predator, but the way it’s presented makes Batman vs Predator one of the better-written Batman crossovers of the 1990s.Jacob Malewitzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11736917698207934001noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2037238665094257836.post-55126504400888083312008-09-21T15:01:00.000-07:002008-09-21T15:03:20.961-07:00Epocrates Offers Thousands of Clinicians Fast HelpEpocrates, Inc., developers of medical software used across the world by hundreds of thousands of healthcare professionals, has a new service designed to save clinicians time and money. I am also thinking of using this as a portal for business writers, who by gaining expertise gain profit. If you like heroes and writing, this is the place to be. I will put much effort into offering you opinions on selling yourself as a top freelance writer too. Or maybe you just like how Catwoman fits in tights … or how Hemingway can peal away a plot like an onion with sentences stripped down and majestic… or how Virginia Woolf can create these literary masterpieces while making you think along the way … or how the horror film makes you bite your nails … that’s here too.

I’ll repeat this: I run the website, in progress, Smiles-Media.com, where I sell my freelance writing services as a business writer, penning SEO articles for top sites and businesses, while also offering direct mail copy. What the heck does all that mean?

It means I like to make money, because I spend it all on the lost heroes of yesterday, the dynamic heroes of today. It’s a far cry from where I was in high school, but that’s another story.

I can help you make money online too. You might even find your way into print. I did. And I’m not the best writer ever. Or you might just find that one cool hero or heroine you never knew about. Those are my goals.

Heroes? In comics. Batman. X-Men. Spider-Man. Iron Man. In books. Frodo and Merlyn, Arthur and the Frankenstein. The heroes (or villains) of history like Caesar, Churchill, and Lincoln. The ever present man in black from the Stephen King novels and short stories. Heroes who act. Dark heroes. Heroes who breath!

Literary masters like John Updike, Paul Auster, Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, Herman Hesse, Mary Shelley. Genre heroes from genre writers like Clive Barker and Stephen King, or the masters of future worlds likes of Isaac Asimov and Mike Resnick. Heroes with life! And writers with life!

Masters of directing like Jim Jarmusch, Akira Kurosawa, Darren Aronofsky, Spielberg, Ridley Scott, and many others. Sometimes these heroes are forgotten, and my job is to make you remember them. Real heroes who are interesting! Heroes in films like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars or Seven Samurai or the countless others. Or lesser known heroes forgotten by the world. For example, who is Robert R. McCammon? Well, he’s a horror writer often compared to Stephen King, but sells millions of copies less (which still isn’t that bad). Or my favorite science fiction storyline, Battletech, a hugely epic world putting mankind to the stars. Some know of it, few read it. Lists over. I get excited when it comes to entertainment, to heroes.

Again: no ads on this blog. I do plan on showing it as a place where I can explore heroes, while also discussing business matters like copywriting or business blogging. Money and heroes are interconnected. My hope is it will mean something to you, and not be another boring and personal, navel gazing blog with no purpose, often seen across the millions of blogs already on the net. Let’s see what happens.

So business and heroes … heroes and business … he’s trying to make money online, right? I am not sure yet. I just want to write. Come join me. And if you want to send me money, support the heroes of today and buy a book! Maybe a comic instead … or an anime film like Akira … or take a course on writing. Do something. We make ourselves heroes and heroines by seeing how others have done it.

Jacob Malewitz

Freelance Writer and Author, Blogger and Small Town Hero

Smiles-Media.com

Jacob Malewitzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11736917698207934001noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2037238665094257836.post-34823595373876604172008-08-06T20:49:00.000-07:002008-08-06T20:51:27.179-07:00Opening Day at CoffeeAndHeroes.Wordpress.com
(This is the first article I published on my new ad free blog for hero fans and business heroes, Coffee and Heroes. Sure, we have peace—the end to war. But even in the opening pages of Remains you hear Steve Niles saying, It gets worse. You could add blood and gore and fun, which are the hallmarks of Steve Niles journey in horror. Remains has a very simple approach: a narrator tells us how it went down. Somebody hits the wrong button and world peace turns into zombie chaos.

Niles works show something which few artists can capture. It was done in “30 Days of Night” and Dwyer does it here. Dwyer’s work is much like the odd art of Ashley Wood, known for his own zombie stories, with its realism and chaotic imagery. In other words, this art is rough around the edges, and intended to be so.

Remains is a fitting story for Niles, who is the master of horror in many ways, taking each piece of legend—from zombies, to vampires, and to Big Foot—and adding his own unique touch to it. Remains is fun in many ways, from lowly anti-heroes stuck in a casino, wondering why zombies surrounded it, to the picture of a world unique even for the zombie genre. Niles treads in the realm of B-Films with A-List horror. What’s intriguing about Gene Simmons House of Horrors isn’t that the comic is a class A horror, but the soul behind its creation. In short, legendary KISS member Gene Simmons loves comics has since moving to the states at the age of 8. He loves comics. More, he likes the adult fantasy genre. So does House of Horrors deserve an A? Let’s see.

The first tale, Into the Woods is somewhat confusing, but wholly entertaining. It’s like being thrown towards the middle, forgetting the beginning. A small town experiences horror, and they have to brave evil woods to escape. But there escape route is filled with witches.

This short tale in a way sums up the horror stories in this collection, where talented artists are more in control than the actual writers. The imagery is less Hellraiser and more cartoonish. It’s still a fascinating take on horror, the stories in this collection, but others like Hellraiser and 30 Days of Night play upon the mind and eyes better.

Overall, the artwork of all these pieces has a unique quality. The stories have a very B-Movie feel to them. It seems the point was to create a book of adult horror tales ala Tales from the Crypt. In that regard they work. However, Tales from the Crypt didn’t have much actual scares either (at least the TV show didn’t). That is the one flaw of this graphic novel. If you are looking for classic horror, or in other words, wanting to look away, maybe this isn’t for you. Meaning: Gene Simmons House of Horrors doesn’t appear designed to scare; it’s just about entertainment. Like its predecessors in the horror genre, it goes more for story, which is the biggest flaw. Anything called House of Horrors should stick to horror, scares, and playing upon our fear.
Jacob Malewitzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11736917698207934001noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2037238665094257836.post-1917845609950095052008-07-04T12:44:00.002-07:002008-07-04T12:45:25.091-07:00The Very Best Accord Radiators<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman";">A leading resource in getting in helping you fix your radiator problems, Radiator.com offers the Accord Radiator while also explaining how to use it.

Jacob Malewitzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11736917698207934001noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2037238665094257836.post-45737321276413575202008-07-04T12:42:00.000-07:002008-07-04T12:43:53.221-07:00Gene Simmons House of Horrors Part 1
Gene Simmons House of Horrors Part 1

Review by Jacob Malewitz

IDW has made a name for itself with horror, namely with “30 Days of Night” and other ghoulish tales of zombies, vampires, and monsters.

Jacob Malewitzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11736917698207934001noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2037238665094257836.post-12171789888480424112008-07-03T19:55:00.002-07:002008-07-03T19:57:01.011-07:00A Cosmetology Career
If you want the best beauty schooling, you go to the best beauty schools. We jump forward after some chaotic killing where a older man dreams of how his parents were killed. He wants revenge. He arms himself, ready to do battle with the beast that prowls the woods. Standing in his way is a sheriff of the town, the man who keeps all the vicious murders somewhat of a secret. It’s set to change the world. It will, likely, save lives … many lives. Not as important, but still important … is the fact it will save people with medical issues time—and it will do the same for doctors. What am I talking about? It’s the new Epocrates PDA medical software which is sweeping across the market. Over half a million physicians are now using the Epocrates medical software. Why? It saves lives … saves time … saves money. Obviously, saving lives is what many doctors and physicians do. But also, we must see the advantages of avoiding any major problems, the ones not always ending in death. It can save pain. So what does it do? The Epocrates PDA medical software allows doctors to see exactly which medications to prescribe, safely. Known for horror, like “The Books of Blood” “Hellraiser,” Barker has had some fitting adaptations in comic books. The first “Hellraiser” graphic novels have been released by Checker Books. But IDW, a comic publisher known for “Transformers” and “30 Days of Night,” offers “The Great And Secret Show,” an adaptation of Barker’s work by Chris Ryall and Gabriel Rodriguez. One goes in expecting epic horror of the fantastic kind, with blood screams and maybe magic; instead you get something that rolled around in Barker’s mind (as he proposes in a different light in the intro), where reality is gone, the body mundane, and where the depth of a character is just as entertaining.

Randolf Jaffe, a postal worker, is truly mundane, and finds his own level of heaven and catching a few fleeting glimpses of hell. One asks the question immediately: When will he go postal? He looks to much like a disturbed clerk—ala “American Splendor”—not to either search for something he lacks or find he needs nothing.

Randolf Jaffe’s job is to go through letters the post office couldn’t deliver, hoping to find cash, valuables, anything. He finds something: a look into The Art, a coin or talisman, and a place called Atlantis. The Art is a cerebral place which offers not only power and knowledge, but immortality. Randolf is willing to die to find it. This find provides the outcast more reason to isolate, or perhaps a way to make his mark on the world.

He makes some of the choices that make this a Barker book: he exacts his dreams by bloodshed and calls for power. A character with nothing to lose, Jaffe wants more. The images of a man with frisk hair, skinny, and one who keeps to himself point out he has every reason to leave the empty life and begin anew.

Telling the tale of one man bent on taking the world acts as entertainment. But other characters are brought in, each who have a destiny tied to Randolf. It becomes much more than a story of hell and hate, good and evil. The characters all have connections to The Art in some way, all being pieces fitting onto the board. A surprise awaits, because lines are blurred here for each character. The question becomes, which side each character touched by The Art choose?

Writer Ryall works in the metaphysical elements that one so often sees in Barker’s works. Characters desires overtake them. In “Hellraiser” the toy box; in “Candyman” the reflection in the mirror; in “The Great And Secret Show” a moment of insanity, of not looking for things but finding them. Assumptions cannot be made of this piece; genre labels don’t fit. Randolf goes searching for that which will make him something different. He sleeps with men and women, drinks, travels, and all in the hope of finding answers to a curiosity overtaking him. Ryall lets the story out; this is no three act, Spider Man attacks Green Goblin, loses, tries again, then kisses Mary Jane. We have a fragment of life worked in: fast and slow, it brings Barker’s surreal vision to the comic page.

Rodriguez takes a lively character in the initial stages of this graphic novel, developing his madness and desires, while showing patience in the artwork—not overwhelming the story with splash pages or constant movement. Ryall has a part in that, making sure the action scenes are rare early, but allowing for the story to hold something of the fantastic and becoming hard to turn away from. It’s a story that stays with you.

It is becoming of a Barker-cliché to say blood is common. This story has plenty of physical and philosophical battles—even some action scenes—but little blood. It’s a portrait of what evil is, and how good contradicts it.

The title of the piece is related to the characters. “The Great And Secret Show” is something scene by everyone upon birth, death, and once while sleeping next to the love of one’s life.

What makes it different? Barker brought in plenty of drama to his look at the fantastic. “The Great And Secret Show” tells a story akin to Stephen King or Robert R. McCammon, where blood is there, but it’s not the answer or the focus. No character or scene is wasted, which is somewhat surprising because bloodshed, sex, and mad voodoo are atypical in these types of literary fantasy. It works as a laborious pursuit which, at times, finds gold. From tribal figures with wisdom, to screenwriters with a penchant for the mysterious, one sees why this dreaming vision works on so many levels.
Jacob Malewitzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11736917698207934001noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2037238665094257836.post-90710221852415961962008-05-24T20:30:00.000-07:002008-05-24T20:32:35.244-07:00Personal Injury Lawyers in the Austin Area
The best kinds of law firms offer you peace of mind.
