We spend a fair amount of time talking about techniques for SEO and how things work within the engines. What I would like to take a moment to do is discuss why SEO is so useful as a marketing tool.

I think that for me the main reason that organically optimising your business to be found on the internet is so powerful, is that you are only paying to be found by people actually looking for what you sell.

If you place an advert for printed material in the newspapers, or on the television, hundreds of people who don’t want anything printed will see the advert. You are having to pay to show your advert to people that have no interest in printing and are never going to buy from you.

However, if you spend money budgeting to have the term banner stands optimised, then everytime some searches for banner stands you will be found. Not only that, the people that have found are not only searching for printed material, they are specifically searching for banner stands, so the likely hood of them converting into customers are incredibly high. So it is the targeted nature of the money spend that makes it powerful.

The other thing is volume of traffic. On average, just under five thousand people a day search on the term pet insurance. As such, if you are selling pet insurance, and you appear in the top of the listings for pet insurance, you are quite likely to get a huge amount of visitors to your website and thus make a lot of money of the back of that.

Most people outside of the SEO world think that it is a some kind of magic secret art form, and in a way it is even though there are 1001 people out there giving out free information it still remains a fairly secretive art.

Since DMOZ has become all but impossible to get into, people are looking elsewhere for directory entrys. We spoke last time about how directory entrys can be integral to your seo campaign, well I just found a new possiblity for you.
Webhostinggeeks has a free directory at the back. It is human edited, and you can submit for nothing, however you do have to provide a reciprical link back to them with the anchor text Best Web Hosting Review as so. Recipricol linking isn't nessasarily the way forward, and so I'm not sure how useful this is - unless they allow you link from a different site. At this point it does become useful potentiall.
I plan to investigate this further...

Social networking has been around for a long time. The networks can currently be divided into four groups:

In this article we will be concentrating on concentrating on lens.

Description

A ‘lens’ is a singular page grouping information of a single kind all in one space. The most famous of these is Wikipedia, but it is far from the only one. Since Wikipedia has effectively given itself no follows, for our purposes it has become a little redundant. However the Wiki’s should not be discarded out of hand! If you look at the lens, you’ll see the real beauty in using them in this way. Due to the fact that the lens can be about anything that you are interested in, you can create lens that are specifically tailored to the niche market that you want your links to go into. I’m particularly pleased with the forfront page. Now while I work alongside forfront, they don’t pay me for optimisation or link building... so why have I included them in my lens making? This site has allowed me to send links out to multiple clients of mine because they are also clients of forfronts. I have links to stoneways, coffee point and firsthips by creating only one lens.

I genuinely feel that the making of a good lens adds value to the internet, giving genuinely useful information as well as producing quality links.

While these links are ‘free’, the cost of them lies in the time you must spend to set them up. Taking 10minutes to make a lens will have it posted on the internet, but it will provide no value, have very little substance and will ultimately be removed by the host site as and when they realise how little value it adds to the site. It is well worth allowing sufficient time to create the lens you make to ensure that it really does provide a quality page. Give the internet a good page, and your links will stand strong.

Google has made major steps in replacing the ubiquitous Microsoft Office Suite by moving popular applications like word processors and spreadsheet software online. These documents are then accessible from any internet-connected computer, making transitioning from work to home to client office and back again a snap. Plus, the documents stored online are safe from hardware crashes and damage from flood or fire. As an added bonus, the Google office suite is absolutely free.

However, there is one major flaw in the concept – what happens when you don’t have an internet connection? Losing your hard work because your internet went out for a few minutes is frustrating. Not being able to work on your documents when you are flying to the next business meeting is a waste of valuable time. Although it’s hard to believe in this day and age, people do sometimes have to exist without the internet.

It’s not uncommon that companies might want to have more than one URL for their website. For example, perhaps you would like people who type YourCompanyName.Biz to have the same chance of finding you as the ones who type YourCompanyName.Com.

A common SEO mistake, however, is to have a copy of the website at each location. Search engines, however, don’t index websites; they index URLs. This means that your copies will be competing against one another, and may even be penalized for duplicate content.

Another problem with duplicate content is that it makes it very cumbersome to make changes, since each page will require its own updates.

A far better solution is to focus your SEO efforts on one single URL, and using a 301 direct to send visitors (and search engine spiders) who type in a different URL to your main site.

Google, at least, handles 301 redirects very well. It even transfers the Page Rank bonuses from links to the redirected URLs to the main website.

Sitemaps for SEO - Make a Sitemap and Update It

Every site needs a sitemap so the search engine spiders can find all the pages within your site. For most sites linking every page off the hoMePage isn’t practical so there must be a sitemap, or a list of all pages in your site, that’s accessible from a link on the hoMePage, preferably in the footer.

One trick is to naMe The site map pages index1.Htm, index2.Htm, etc. Googlebot likes index pages and gives more weight to pages with the word index in them thinking it is a hoMePage.

A good sitemap page has the keyphrase of the page linked to the page with a short description of what the page is about. Don�t put more than 24 links on a sitemap since Googlebot won’t follow much more than that.

If you have 100+ pages within your site, try to group your pages together in categories so each page of your sitemap has up to 24 links all about the saMe Category. If you end up having index1.Htm, index2.Htm, index3.Htm, etc, place links to these other sitemap pages at the bottom using the anchor text of the category for each page. For example, if you run a wine site, your sitemap might be grouped into wine racks, wine making, and wine accessories. At the bottom of your sitemap you would put links to each of these sitemap pages using those category naMeS like:

Wine racks | wine making | wine accessories

Just reMeMber to update your sitemap as you add pages to your site so the spiders can find and index them.
