Wretchy: MTT Cheaters and why online poker may be screwed.

Here is my reply on P5s to the news that the cheater "Wretchy" is going to serve a short suspension and be allowed to keep his winnings on FTP and PS despite being caught using his girlfriend's account in the same tournaments. ZeeJustin and JJprodigy got lifetime bans just a few years ago. Remember the scene from "Rounders" when Worm gets caught bottom dealing to Mike and the butt whooping they received from the police? Vegas casinos used to break fingers and sometimes people just never came back from "Rides" in the desert.
The least we can do is start an online campaign to have his Online Player of the Year points at CardPlayer.com disqualified. CONTACT CARDPLAYER HERE (This is important. Please drop a comment, email a short note and forward this post if you care about fair play)

Background:
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away (pre 2006) I was asked to join a bonus whoring club. Once I got in and proved I could play rock tight full ring FLHE I got a second invite to the secret society. They required; at least five different IDs (called Gnomes), at least three computers with different connections (two for play and one for IM), and provided IP randomizer software / links. They set up times and we played 5 to a table on the Cryptologic sites earning around $8K in bonus bucks until the grind wore me down. So I quit. A little while later they came back and offered me Winholdem and an autofold bot so my gnome accounts could grind away. The catch was I had to allow remote access to the computers. Feeling on the edge of a slippery slope I declined and blacklisted their email addresses. (This stuff is probably still going on for all I know).

The Point:
These guys/cheaters had people in at least twenty or so cities that I am aware of and there were several other teams much bigger and better coordinated chugging away. Once the Bonus Grinding game got destroyed by UIGEA these guys were in a lurch and attempted to turn their sights onto rakeback scams. We have all seen the bots chugging away for hours on end until someone writes support and they go away. Well the sites had learned from the bonus fiasco to watch for abuse behaviours and are pretty wise to the whole thing.

My final point is the sites have learned from bonus abuse teams, Rakeback abuse and sign up deposit fraud to watch for and actively lock accounts based on a set of criteria which experience has proven to be valid. However, when it comes to MTTs they rely almost completely on the players themselves to police them. The one major drawing that a poker site has is its huge MTT payouts which attracts fish and criminals alike. The sites are not protecting the average, rake paying, recreational player from the cheaters, angle shooters and Multiaccounters the MTT community itself is thanks to P5s and 2P2. Which in and of itself is completely and totally wrong.

The technology to detect this stuff is inexpensive and easy to implement. What is hard is finding a security/IT geek who is an experienced enough poker player to spot collusive play. Which obviously FTP or PS has not hired yet since an account controlled by 'Wretchy' from the same IP, in the same MTT, was playing "Obviously different" style of play. That is ludicrous and just too damned lame a response to even justify trying to explain why "Obviously Different" is obviously cheating. Factor in the fact that they allow known cheaters to serve very short suspensions and return with no indication at all on their screen name they have been caught in the past. PS and FTP need to get off their rear ends and address these issues before they ignore themselves into a buy out from Harrah's.

OK folks. If you are a reader of the top five poker forums then you know who this guy is. Lots of young players think he is the absolute SHIZNITZ but most of us older players think this guy is just another angle shooting hustler. He ignores chop deals when he thinks he can win and his Poker Stars account is currently locked for Multi-Accounting tournaments. Makes you wonder how he can agree to show up for an interview?

Day #6: Thanks Sweetheart I am back in the saddle.

So far this in this week's live tournament orgy;

I have played in 7 events,
busted near the bubble in 5,
and ran KK into monsters in 2.
When I walked out of the room yesterday I wanted to smack somebody.

I was really getting down on myself and my abilities until a certain somebody stuffed some food down my throat, made me sleep, then dragged me back out to the poker room for a little cash game ego boost. Until I got back in there with regular players, playing in regular/recognizable styles that I could exploit my poker ego was seriously bruised. It only took about 3 hours of 1/2 NL to get my tourney stakes back plus a few bucks. This is why the Professionals play cash games since the Tournament Trail is so freaking gruesomely infuriatingly painful and gut wrenching.

She also pointed out a few things that I had forgotten in my cloud of "Life Tilt" and poker self pity.
#1- The players that crippled me in the tournaments were not regulars probably just gamblers getting lucky. Hell, in the two early bustouts it was KK vs A2 with a donkey who saw his ACE!!! to the river and my KKK flopped set ran into an old dude's AAA flopped set. No way you don't go broke there. (What are the odds of KKK vs AAA sets, not trips, on the flop?).
#2- I made the right plays with the right odds and my 17 outers just flat missed when it came time for a bubble out or run deep decision.
#3- I was playing tired and frustrated. It showed according to her. So I loosened up forgot the by ins and played poker.
#4- I was the only player she recognized every day running deep. She was wrong here but of the over 1000 registered players in my events this week I saw only two make deeper runs on more than one event. Makes me wish they offered a Player Points award because I would definitiely be there.
#5- In 5 seperate events I finished well within the top 15% of entrants. At Pokerstars, or anywhere else, that is clearly a cash. Harrah's, in an effort to please the regular grinders, only pays out 10% of the field. Hell in more than one event I was down to shorthanded play with two tables left when the suckouts happened.
#6- I won 1 satellite outright for $650 and chopped two more for $325 each in 6 attempts. If I sucked at poker then how did I do that.
#7- And most important of all she said in essence to quit whining, play your "A" game and if you lose you already won cause I will be here.

PS; my girlfriend knows very little about poker tournament strategy beyond hand rankings but she does know a whole heck of a lot about people.

Stalling in Online Poker

Poker Stars which is famous for its insanely tight bubble play really screwed the pooch in its big buy in SCOOP events. With a six minute time clock and a bubble at 64 players the stalling starts around 90 players remaining. Kid Poker himself finally went all kinds of Phil Helmuth on a habitual staller. Going so far as to threaten to have rule changes implemented at Poker stars which he probably does have some say in as a signed big named Red pro. Regardless, the tactic of stalling is a minor inconvenience with a time clock of 90 seconds. Heck I usually save every once of mine for the bubble since everyone else is doing it, albeit way to early. BUT SIX MINUTES!!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

Your average online player could eat five hot pockets, down a two liter of Redbull, smoke a phattie and take a dump in less time than that. Add to the fact that at a ten handed table you got 60 minutes or one hour!!! of stalling near the bubble. Most people with ADHD have forgotten they were in a tournament and turned on Battlestar Galactica reruns. They had over 30 players actively trying to stall their way into the money for heaven sake. That is 3 hours total, most normal levels in stars events run 15 minutes, meaning 12 levels of STALLING!!!!!!!!!!! I know at least a few occasions where I have entered the bubble phase in the top ten chip leaders, folded every hand and limped into or busted on the bubble because the tourney clock ate away my stack. I remember once going three whole levels and making a single orbit. Ridiculous.

I am on Daniel N's side here. The Time Bank / Hand for Hand issue has got to be fixed. My idea is to flatten the payouts to 15-20% instead of the usual 10%, Kill the tournament clock, and start Hand for Hand at 5% of the field above the bubble.

A friend and I started a new poker blog specifically for players in Kentucky to discuss the legalities and opportunities of legal Poker in our home state. Mac Mini and me. (Review of Apple's Cheapest Computer)

My old reliable Acer laptop finally started to die. Feeling sad and remorseful I dutifully did everything a good computer owner should do when their machine starts giving you the "Blue Screen of Death" and "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown". I scanned for viruses, added RAM and reformatted several times to no avail. With no signs of improvement I began scanning the sale papers for a replacement machine. However with Windows 7 coming by the end of the year and my hatred of anything Vista my problems were twofold.

With a dying machine, limited budget and not many other viable options I wandered into the Apple Store. I knew I could not justify the cost of a MacBook Pro but I loved my new iPhone. So with an open mind I walked in expecting the usual sales clerks who knew nothing and lots of gadgets. Was I surprised!!!

The young man who met me at the door was courteous and trendy. He asked me a few questions about what I needed, what I wanted and my experience level with computers. He then led me to a comfortable table where a Mac Mini sat waiting. He showed me how to do the basics on this $599 320gb HD with 4gb RAM wonder of modern technology. I quickly realized that I could use this tiny machine as a DVD player and Home Theater machine once my iTunes Library was imported. I was utterly amazed.

After about half an hour in the store I walked out with a new Mac Mini, wireless keyboard, wireless mighty mouse and Boise speakers for less than what a new desktop grade replacement would cost. With 90 days of free Apple Care and a 1 year warranty under my belt I was on my way home with a new computer/media center. Set up was a breeze, OS X is easy to get used to and my iPhone syncs flawlessly. Safari, the default browser, is a little hard to get used to but is reliable. The Airport function for wireless networking is almost idiot proof and it is the quietest computer ever. I tried using an XBox 360 last year as a primary DVD/HTC system but its growling drive could wake the dead.

Overall I am extremely pleased with my purchase but I would not recommend it for your main home theater setup primarily due to the need for a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter and lack of a good audio out. However for a dorm, bedroom or office set up you can't beat it for the price. You can get the Mac Mini at either the Apple Store, Best Buy or Amazon (for a few bucks less).

I took this picture a year or so ago when one of my neighbors got busted trying to make his own Methamphetamine. According to the firemen this was a simple "One Pot" lab which of course makes the worse mess. The Fire Department got called because his spilled the stuff all over himself and got sick. The smell from a block away was horrible how could they have stood it locked inside that house?
