Things have been good here in Portland for White Fang and Gnar Tapes & Shit. The house is a wreck to some degree and there's no gear in the practice space. The only reasons that I can give for the situation is that A) we haven't been cleaning and B) the gear is being used. Currently the other in-house band, Grandparents, are recording in the forested hills of northern Oregon in a mansion. Supposedly I should have a new tape from them in the next few days. Grandparents remind me of Neil Young & Crazy Horse if they were younger, dumber, and honestly less sober. Seriously, I came home from buying weed and they were sitting in a circle on the floor playing tablas and a sitar. NO SHIT. One of the funniest spectacles I've ever witnessed with my own eyes.

White Fang just played a sick show with ...WORMS and Eternal Tapestry and this band called Paper/Upper/Cuts. If it had been just those four bands it would have been a pretty solid night of drunken noise. However, much to the chagrin of the majority of players, a young band comprised of members hailing from, get this, Oregon City AND Vancouver, Washington jumped the bill. Supposedly they had just shown up and somehow convinced the owner of the club to let them play, saying that they brought "twenty people willing to pay." They were fairly chubby and white (as you'd assume.) Their mode of dress suggested an interest in mallcore and bro/chad styles, as well as some dabbling in nu-metal and Juggalo throwbacks. They all had hilarious facial hair that made them look seriously creepy and one of their mothers was there. She was a trip. An older blond with sunken eye sockets and fading tan skin, her blank expression and bulging eyes made for one of the less attractive sights of the night. They were called Trulie and they unleashed a woefully uninspired set of Metalcore on a woefully uninspired audience of twenty-two.

Thankfully, they agreed to play first and no one had to watch them for long. Personally, I walked in and laughed. I couldn't stop laughing because the singer was trying to get really energetic, but he was kind of chubby and drunk and was mostly stumbling over the cables and the drums. I looked over to my friend Joel, who works the sound there at Satyricon, who gestured to the band before giving me and the rest of the world a big thumbs down. I couldn't help but sadly smile at him, who would have to sit, watch, AND listen to them for their entire set.

After the show the fat singer called over to some attractive young black ladies, referring to them as "brown sugar." I showed the dude my ass and he tried to create trouble, but we were rolling twelve deep and we were all very drunk; there would've have been little they could've done to beat us. We were already in Warrior mode after the show, some of us bleeding, all of us numb.

Funnily enough, shortly after leaving the Satyricon for the Hush down the street, a neighboring dance night had spilled out onto the street and a full-on street brawl went down in the parking lot across from the Satyricon. We saw most of it as we were walking back from the Hush. There was a lot of energy flowing through the streets and we could feel it. We walked around the corner to see around 300 or so kids our age, though black, full on screaming at each other from across the train tracks that happened to be in front of the Satyricon. We could hear the sirens coming as we started to cross the street into the roaring crowd, as we drunkenly asked each other and certain opinionated security guards what was going on. No sooner had the cop cars blocked all corners before the crowd dispersed back into Friday night in downtown Portland.

According to the ten or so people I talked to after, there were fifty or so people punching each other in the lot across the street from the club. A lot can be said about why the mostly young and black crowd happened to be fighting each other. There has been MASSIVE amounts of gentrification in Portland, especially in North Portland, a historically black neighborhood. Developers have basically moved out the generally poorer citizens of NoPo out to cheaper and, let's face it, gnarlier east Portland, as well as the neighboring city of Gresham, which is a horrifically class-divided hell hole of a town. All of this happened a lot faster than you'd imagine. Certain gangs, especially the Bloods, used to have almost all their territory restricted to North Portland. Now with new turf lines being drawn and more and more youngsters joining the ranks, things have been coming to a head in gangland. Over the past few years, there has been a noticeable rise in not just visible gang activity, but violence as well. Most of the violence happens around the MAX lines (our city spanning pedestrian train) out on the east platforms or at/near downtown night clubs. Nasty enough as it sounds, the Zone (one of the only, if not the only, minor permitted clubs in town) recently got shut down for some killings, as well as some stabbings and other violence amongst high school aged dudes.

Kind of crazy, but here's some cool news. Our friend Dan White from Sacramento is planning on moving to Portland. If he does, we'll be having some really amazing Gnar Tapes & Shit and White Fang shirts made real soon. The kid LIVES screenprinting. His anticipated contributions to Gnar Tapes & Shit are really exciting.

We are planning to re-vamp the site and make more tapes available by the end of the week. That means the Argumentix and Timmy tapes will be sent out soon.

Hello friends!

It's been awhile, I know.

We finally aren't homeless anymore. Can you believe it?

We moved into a loft/attic in Brooklyn again. That's right. We're like six blocks away from where we lived in a place known as SK8 & Rhone. We're also like a block from the original house used for our favorite all-ages venue The Artistery, but that was like five years ago or something.

AND we live a few blocks from the Reynold's House where I finally got my girlfriend Lana's number a year ago this Saturday.

Cool to be here. I have a roof-balcony to smoke on outside the window of my bed. There's also a sweet Maine Coon cat here named Turkey who can climb up and down the ladder into our room. She's fluffy and gray and looks a lot smaller than most Maine Coons I've known. She's sitting with me right now. I think we're the only ones in the house, which the kids who live here call the Meat Factory. I don't call it that.

BUT I DIGRESS.

The big news is that we can A.) we can practice here.
And B.) Gnar Tapes & Shit can finally have a workspace again.

We have at least three new tapes coming out next month.

1.Mythology by White Fang. A twenty minute set of songs recorded at KDVS in Davis, California. Widely considered by certain circles to be the cleanest and most well-produced WHT FNG release to date, this tape is a must have for fans of our songs, considering that almost all of our songs (minus a few GLARING exceptions) are contained within the plastic of our Mythology tape.

2. Sparkles by Super Destroy is by far the best. All recorded on tape from the beginning to the end of SK8 & Rhone, this tape is 30 jams featuring various line-ups and instruments. An anthology of a birth and a death, a rebirth and bag of weed, Sparkles traces the beginning of Super Destroy. Also released as a digital coupon w/zine by our favorite Marriage Records.

3. The very first self-titled Super Destroy tape is a classic. Found in the back of a store in a bin while on tour in San Francisco's Chinatown, this gem of a China-Pop Happy New Year jam will blow your mind and wet your panties.

Gnar Tapes & Shit is, let's face it, seemingly dormant right now. I assure you with firm confidence and positive vibrations that it is far from inactive. I have made two new zines. One is called "Garbage" and the other is called "Black Metal." I made a limited run for each at the Kinko's. Those copies can be found around town at places like Microcosm Books in southeast on 9th & Main and Reading Frenzy downtown on 9th & Oak. Oh and Rad Summer on 28th & Burnside has some too maybe.

Hey there dudes! Gnar Tapes & Shit is on a journey right now. As you may have heard, the famously cool SK8 & Rhone house (the fort where we hung our cap and socks up at the end of the day) is now forever gone.

I lived at 3626 SE 8th Avenue for more than a year and a half, but it feels like my whole life. We got evicted and now we are HOMELESS!

(This is where really tap-heavy metal riffs start playing.)

So while we're looking for a new building to house Gnar Tapes & Shit AND White Fang, we're going to have to lay low for a second.

This doesn't mean GT&S is "on a break" or "on hiatus", it just means we won't be making new merchandise for a few weeks. Anything you want can still be attained. Except for these exceptions.

Hello friends,

As you may know, White Fang is planning to tour the U.S. next month. We were relying on the sale of Kyle’s car, a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, in order to purchase a van.

Unfortunately, today we were leaving a jam session and the worst thing that could ever happen, did indeed happen.

Kyle, thinking that his car was in reverse, pushed on the gas sending the front of the car straight into the truck parked in front of us. The truck is fine, but Kyle’s car is now, basically, totaled.

The hood is smashed and the radiator is busted. So is the left headlight.

Now, not only do we not have a way to get a van, but we are not going to have almost any money for tour. We were planning to make a profit in the sale of the car and the purchase of the van, in hopes that we would have a tour fund.

Our resolve is as good as ever, but this puts us in a whole other realm of hurt.

We are almost done booking the tour, but now we need to ask anyone who knows anyone for help.

If you have a van, or know someone who has a van, and are willing to let us borrow it for our tour, you will be forever be our savior.

And if you have any donations that you’d like to make, you will get every White Fang album, tape, shirt, etc. for free for life.

Please, please help your band.

I know the world is in shambles right now, with the economy and the state of things in general, but if you can help we will never forget it.

Breakfast Mountain, Madrad, White Fang. Throw some Darwin in the middle of all that and you have cooked up one mean night.

Only two words to explain what happened last night. "High Energy"

First off, the hush was packed to the brim. Terry Radjaw called me at 8:30 to tell me there was already a line outside.

Nine oclock rolls by, house lights still up and there is anticipation in the air. Darwin hits the laptop, mashing up some sweet Bollyfunk sounds with bands like Weezer, Soulja Boy and Ol' Dirty Bastard. Darwin knows the rules and he breaks them.

Breakfast Mountain is so dear to my heart. The beats are so grimy. Madrad couldnt stop talking about them the rest of the night. Which brings me to Madrad.

I'm not sure if Portland was ready for them. But we brought them anyway. People were dancing so increadibly hard that on the floor below you could see the cealing shake and the had to build a makeshift stage support in one of the bedrooms below. A adoring female fan jumped on stage and tackeled Buffalo Madonna and proceeded to hump him. Hard. Really hard. Stage dives, groping, being groped. I've never heard the word "Pussy" so many times in one set. Rightly so, it is the number one inspiration of their music.

White Fang, we all know White Fang here at Gnartapes. But it was an amazing set. Very rowdy. Gnar. Gnar Gnar. I examined my body today and I'm 25 percent bruises. Nuff said

The Return

It's almost as if Gnar Tapes & Shit didn't exist before this point. Things have become far more organized and serious since the last time I posted.

For one thing, I'd like to introduce my new business partner, Jordan Strong.

This bro has been a deeper member of both White Fang and SK8 & Rhone f, wor some time now. In fact, after Zach and the other bros moved to Kansas City, Jordan took Zach's old closet room. Jordan also works at the awesome art gallery on Burnside called Grass Hut. Jordan is also one fucking amazing photographer. I couldn't do this without him. As we go along, you'll all get to know and love him. But for now, let's talk about what I know you all want to hear about... tapes.

I'm sure you're familiar with White Fang's doppleganger band, Super Destroy. As of right now there are four different Super Destroy tapes.

There are two very new ones. First we have Eat My Shred, a ten minute tape that me and Kyle made. 6 tracks. There is no way this one will disappoint you. Very charming and welcoming, this tape will help you to realize that you have a friend in the merry pranksters here at Gnar Tapes & Shit.

There's also the newly found Death Eaters tape also by Super Destroy. Another ten minute banger, this raw and noisy spazz document took a few days of listening to figure out just who made it. We realized that it as TC on drums and me on a fucked-over and effected three stringed Kramer guitar. This tape fucking owns!

We've also re-upped on our previous Super Destroy tapes, Gamma Ray and Cool Bros. These tapes couldn't be more different from one another. Gamma Ray was the first Super Destroy piece to ever exist and it contains jams ranging from its A-side of primal noise-punk jams, to the ending nylon guitar almost-joke song. The tripped-out Cool Bros is a tape collage of songs that everyone could recognized, recorded and fucked with from CDs, radio, and tapes. Destroyed songs from the Beatles, Peter Gabriel, Usher, Fergie, radio commercials, etc. This tape will weird you out and make you smile.

Within a day or so we will also have finished our tape duplications of our bro-beatmaster Breakfast Mountain. This tape holds a very, very special place in all of our hearts. There are a lot of folks trying to make good beats, but no one can make such heartfelt and banging tracks like he can. This tape will rule your world, I promise.

We will also finally have our White Fang live tape GNAR OUT: LIVE ON KPSU very soon. I just have to find the CD-R that contains the performance. This tape's performance is one of the first that include Chuck on the second drum-set. Raw and unyielding, this tape will be a fine addition to any rad tape collection.

That's a lot of information about each tape and I'm getting tired of writing and not watching this rad 1979 Jackie Chan movie called Fearless Hyena. (This movie is awesome. It is overdubbed in the traditional-comedic way, complete with British voice acting and very strange and tripped out reverb/delay on the fight sounds. I love it.)

Soon we will have tapes from Panther, White Rainbow, Fist Fite, and other bands that you know and love. As well as a scream-punk tape from White Fang, a grind-techno tape from TC, a few mix-tapes from Feather Headdress (one of the best rap-beat duos you've never heard), etc.

Shirts soon too. A skate video. DVD-Rs and CD-Rs (aka CD-GNARS).

Also I made a Super Destroy record by myself that will be coming out as a clear-purple 10" record on Virginia's Now Hereness Records.

We also have White Fang's Marriage Records debut Pure Evil, as well as States Rights Records most recent Zone compilation, Grown Zone.

Whassup kids.

Sorry, it's been a long time. Things have been going down over here at SK8 & Rhone. Zach and Wolfboy are moving to Kansas city to start an art gallery/studio with our friends Matt Huff and former SK8 & Rhone tenant, Jason C. aka Dust Collector, DJ-Sun, Raw Blow, etc.

So I'm no longer in the basement. I am up in the top floor front room, above the front porch, facing west. Steve and Thaddeus live in the basement now. The main floor is totally changed. The old living room is now the art room. The old art room is now Kyle's room. And the old main floor room is now the awesomest living room ever.

Chuck's going to be moving into the balcony room when Zach and Wolfboy journey onward. Then our good friend Jordan Strong, White Fang's official photographer and bro-dawg, will be moving into the infamous closet room, nestled near the doorway of the balcony room. Then Chuck's old room becomes the room of our homie Tony Ortega aka Orem (the Sink). He just moved to town a while back and got a job at Starbucks.

Kyle and Steve are still working at Peet's Coffee next to the Marriott downtown. Thadd is still working for that glass artist dude. Chuck's still up at the warehouse. I still need to find a job. It's an immediate goal and priority of mine that I intend to conquer. But I digress.

White Fang had a photo shoot for XLR8R magazine. That was funny. The results should be rad though. Saw our radio reports. Kind of exciting.

We also got our very own sub-label of Marriage devoted to making split 7" with White Fang and other bands together. Its called CHIPS. Get ready.

Talk of a Super Destroy art book/White Fang photo book. Maybe.

And the first Super Destroy album release is going down between a set of recordings I made over a seven-month period and a label in Virginia known as Now Hereness. It will be a 10" and will look REALLY rad. Maybe translucent purple vinyl...

But enough about that.

GNAR TAPES & SHIT has re-upped on some Super Destroys. I got some Breakfast Mountain CD-GNARS. I got a few more Dust Collectors. Going to be making some new shit.

WHT FNG - But the Princess is in Another Castle: Get ready for a WHT FNG tape like no other. A-Side is three songs. Vocals are mainly screams with me and Zach. Two drummers; Jimi and Jason C. Kyle on guitar. B-Side is the recording of us making up the new song "Cool Powers" on the spot. Plus Tyler's cabasa song.

That's the only one I can think of right now except for the three or four new releases of more Super Destroy projects.

(NOTE: In case you didn't know, Super Destroy is whatever weird jams and shit that White Fang does together, (also it takes me, Kyle, and Jimi being involved in order to make it White Fang anyhow) but doesn't stand up to White Fang qualifications. But it can be any lone wolf recordings too. I do all my lone wolf shit as Super Destroy. But I digress.)

Also States Rights Records is going to drop a new Fang. Keep your ears to the streets.

Gnar Tapes & Shit is hitting the road this Saturday as White Fang tours southbound with White Rainbow and Rob Walmart. In our goody box of treasures we will have some serious merch. Really serious merch, including the ridiculously amazing mixtape by Breakfast Mountain, White Fang Gnar Out live on KPSU, Super Destroy's new THIRTY-MINUTE split-tape called Hernandez the Tape with one side by Wild Bird called The Goo and one side by Megablaster called The Return of Megablaster: Spandex Knife 2, our crew-dawg/rapper Say What is going to drop a Savages tape that is without a title right now, and we'll probably have a few of the other tapes including some of Super Destroy's Gamma Ray, Cool Bros, and Blind Bat tapes and maybe a Dust Collector tape or few.

We'll also have our first CD-GNARS (used to be called CD-Rs, now they called CD-GNARS). These will be some our cheaper merchandise; longer album lengths, but larger quantities so therefore cheaper for you to buy. We will hopefully be releasing two CD-GNARS that we will take on tour with us. The first is the classic demo by Scar of the Archetype. A spew-bag of all things metal, (especially keen on the thrash and black metal vibes) this CD-GNAR features White Fang crew-dawg Thaddeus Clemens (TC) on drums as well as our friends Ben and Max from the Clatter House (where Fortress of Amplitude and White Rainbow played last night before the cops came on some fight call or something and we had to move it over here at SK8 & Rhone). The other CD-GNAR is the first Super Destroy album called Las Blancas de Huevos y Ojos or the Whites of Eggs and Eyes, coming in the form of a garageband produced solo-album by White Fang's front-kid Erik Wolfgang. 10 songs with lots of singing overdubs, nylon string guitar overdubs, floor tom overdubs, snare overdubs, shoeboxes, broken drum heads, bottle collections, poles, walls, rimshots, clapping, etc. Both of these CD-GNARS should be around three dollars or so, no more than that. We'll probably making thirty of each.

Also my good friend Adrian is playing tonight at the Artistery as Thanksgiving (!!!!!!!) with Grouper and the artist formerly known as WOELV but is now O Paon or something. We are going to be there tonight, you should too.

Oh yeah and Rad Summer is having a show tomorrow night with a band called Lamb's Laughter that should be really trippy and rad.

CHEERFUL POETRY OF THE COSMOS/BEST SEXY BOYS EVER - WHT FNG

White Fang, our boys with the noise, have been doing all kinds of shit lately.

The last show they did was with Argumentix at the Clatter House, which is where our friends from the death metal band Scar of the Archetype live along with Joel who does sound down at the Satyricon. No joke, Joel knows what he's doing. I heard he did such a good job at the Wolf Eyes show the other day that somebody told him he must really care about Wolf Eyes. Which is funny and really rad too. But anyway the show was totally gnarly. Jimi, our lead drummer, is in Mexico near Guadalajara in a town called Atango to celebrate his grandparents' 50th anniversary, so we had our good body-buddy Adam Forkner of White Rainbow fortune fill in and he totally nailed it.

The kids went nuts and we were all really fucked up. SUCCESS!

Word on the street is that the White Fang's Marriage Records debut entitled Pure Evil should be in the office any day now, maybe a week or so?

The shit sounds great I guess, as it was mastered by, who else? Adam Forkner. Get ready to cream your jeans as your world gets rocked.

More word on the split 7" with the Righteous & Harmonious Fists! I went down to Marriage and saw the art for it, designed by none other than Maria Joan Dixon who did the fucking shit for the Valet Naked Acid record. Ours is got like spirit soldiers coming out of the sky as a cloud and shit. It's fucking rad. Those should be out soon too. Homeboys over at Tender Loving Empire are going to do the packaging, while papa Steve Schroeder over at States Rights Records will be doing the DVD that comes with it. Should be a sick little package!

Some deeper word on the street is that a badass little label called Now Hereness is putting out a new Fang 7" entitled But the Princess is in Another Castle that will contain the new banger jam "Eat My Shred" as well as B-side thats title is unconfirmed. Who knows when that shit will be ready... end of summer maybe? Sooner? Later?

Speaking of States Rights Records, word on the street is that they are making an Arigato pack for a 7" part of a release for the Pregnancy Series or something and the Fang is going to do one with a 7" called Mythology and a long EP-CD called Realer Godz or Cheerful Poetry or something. That's going to be rad. We were going to record over at Jackie-O's space or something with Adam, but Jimbo went to Mexico so we'll have to wait until after tour.

Even deeper talk of a split 7" with ...worms for maybe Marriage?

Also our tour with Rob Walmart and White Rainbow starts on July 10th or 11th or something and we'll be going down through California, which is a place I've never been before. Along the way we'll get to meet the Starving Weirdos and go swimming and play with Lucky Dragons at the Smell and all kind of stuff. So I've been getting hit up for the White Rainbow tape (known as C10 aka GNAR LIFE) a lot and realized that I don't have a paypal account.

So the remainder of the White Rainbow tapes will be split like this.

Rad Summer, the coolest store in Portland (trust me, they have the BALLERest gear around, plus all kinds of cool records and shit) will have TWO of every Gnar Tape we have, including C10.

Marriage Records had two of them, but they sold out today, so Gnar Tapes is going to sell the remaining SIX on their web-shop-marketplace. THEY ARE STILL $20 WHICH IS A LOT OF MONEY BUT IT IS WAY WORTH BECAUSE IT IS A FANTASTIC TAPE THAT WILL ONLY EVER EXIST IN THIS FORMAT IN THIS LIFETIME.

If you try and bootleg this shit GNAR TAPES & SHIT will come to your house and hurt you REALLY REALLY badly.

Remember, the other tapes we have are FUCKING RAD too. They will be presented to you with pictures and whatnot at a later date.

I plugged a power strip into the wall, but when I flipped the switch on it all the lights in the room and the CD player that was blasting Zen Arcade stopped blasting.

Now I have to figure out how the hell I'm going to fix this problem.

All the power in my room is gone, but nowhere else in the house.

Goddammit.
