Outlaw Acquires Kuo For Playoff Run

Outlaw announced the acquisition of Hong-Chih Kuo from the Lake Champlain Cannibals for Jason Frasor and Outlaw's 2010 2nd round draft pick. "We are ecstatic about adding a pitcher as talented as Kuo for our 2009 playoff drive," said GM Hildebrant during the press release. When asked whether the team paid too high a price for a pitcher with 19 regular season IP left, Hildebrant replied "Yes the price was high, but we hope to add exactly 36 playoff innings to Kuo's resume. And being deadlocked with the rival Trash Heap for the NASBL South championship means that every remaining 2009 NASBL inning counts. With Jake Peavy, Tim Hudson, Scott Kazmir, Rich Harden and Ryan Dempster all spending time on the 2009 MLB DL, we figure we better go for it this year."

Kuo, MLB's 2008 Set-Up Man of the Year, was 5 and 4 with a 3.41 ERA for the Cannibals so far this year. "Getting a pitcher of Kuo's quality and who can start as well as bridge the late-inning gap to the Mexicutioneer adds immense flexibility to the team," reported Hildebrant. With Rich Harden (2.07 MLB ERA), Joba Chamberlain (2.60 MLB ERA), and Kuo (2.14 MLB ERA) all rated as starters, Outlaw could throw a dominating trio of aces against any team in a short series. When asked whether Joba or Hong-Chih would start or relieve during the remainder of the season, the GM said, "We'll have to take a long, hard look at the individual matchups. Anything's possible when NASBL races go down to the wire."

One Step Forward Two Steps Back

Illinois Times -- Two years ago the Chows traded Josh Johnson and Rich Harden to give them three first rounders (including their own). Those three picks were Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Pena and Kelly Johnson. Today the Chows traded Tulowizki for a 1st. At season's end, the Chows are expected to release Kelly Johnson. This now leaves Carlos Pena as all that is left of "the players that would trasform the Chow Chows."

Tulowitzki was solid for the Chows, but with Hanley Ramirez's improved fielding this season, he has become an extra part. The Chows began shopping Tulo about a week ago by making unsolicited trade proposals to various NASBL clubs. Unconfirmed reports had the Chows pairing Tulo with others to try to get the 1st overall pick, then trying to turn Tulo into Clayton Kershaw, getting a lower first rounder and then finaly consumating the deal they made with LCC. Coming to the Chows is LCC's first round pick, which figures to be a top 10 pick in next year's draft.

"We have learned some things over the years. We are now going to take the best player available and ignore needs. This sort of wroked out with Tulo -- we got a couple of good years from him and then were able to basicly get the same thing back -- a 1st. When we have drafted for need over the years, it just hasn't worked out well for us."

Hopefully, Illinois does not come to regret trading Troy within the division. Brad Sherlag has not hesitated in the past to make deals with the mighty TG East, previously making the Dunn for Nathan deal, the DeJesus deal, the Harden deal and the James Shields deal within the division. "I don't know why we have made som many deals within our own division. Maybe we just match up well with the clubs we know best."

Ben Francisco had 3 base hits as the Pocono Chin Music defeated the Lehigh
Valley Iron Pigs by the score of 5 to 4 at Thunderdome.
 
Pocono had 3 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 3rd inning with the
help of 4 hits.  They would be enough to earn the win.  Lehigh Valley
threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.  
 
Dan Haren(6-9) allowed 1 run in 7 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory.
Cla Meredith got the save, his 1st.  Gil Meche(3-4) was given the loss.
 
'We lose our concentration for one pitch, and we lose the game.' Kevin Burns
said after the game.  'Maybe now these guys will listen when I say they have
to concentrate on EVERY pitch.'

surrendering 14 hits and 2 walks.  Pocono managed 15 hits in their victory.
 
Bobby Jenks recorded his 14th save.  Glen Perkins(3-5) was the loser.  He
allowed 7 runs and 15 hits in 8 innings.

In an great finish the Pocono Chin Music won in dramatic fashion over the
Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs by a score of 5 to 4 at Thunderdome.
 
Pocono came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
with 2 runs on 3 hits.  Prince Fielder started the inning off right when he
hit a single.  Jose Guillen stepped up to the plate and he grounded into a
double play.  Bengie Molina then doubled.  Garret Anderson stepped in and he
blasted a two-run home run (his 10th of the season) giving Pocono the victory
and sending the 30,568 home-town fans home happy.  Pocono had 12 hits for the
night while Lehigh Valley had 9.  
 
The victory was credited to Roy Corcoran(3-2) who went 1 and 1/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Johnny Cueto(4-3) was tagged with the loss.  He allowed 3
homeruns in 8 and 2/3 innings of work.  
 
Corcoran and Ben Francisco were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after
the great come from behind victory.  As Bill Anderson, Jr. noted, 'A win like
this one can do wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy -
the fans, the players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen
runs!'

Pocono Chin Music won a dramatic crowd-pleaser over Honolulu Hawaiians at
Thunderdome pulling it out in their last at bats, 6 to 5.
 
Pocono scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning.  Kaz Matsui
drew a walk.  Matsui stole second with some aggressive base running.  After
an out was recorded, Rich Aurilia stepped in and he was walked intentionally.
Bengie Molina followed and he drew a walk to load the bases.  Garret
Anderson came to the plate and ripped a base-knock resulting in an exciting
win for Pocono and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans.
Overall Pocono out-hit Honolulu 15 to 10.  
 
Bobby Jenks(3-3) allowed 2 runs in 1 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Dennys Reyes(0-2) was the losing pitcher in relief.  The Pocono
ballclub's record now stands at 34-47.  With the loss Honolulu now has a
record of 30-19.

At Thunderdome the Honolulu Hawaiians offense put up 4 runs on the scoreboard
in the 4th inning and easily handled the Pocono Chin Music by the score of 6
to 2.
 
Carlos Zambrano(2-3) pitched well for Honolulu in their victory.  He
surrendered 4 hits and 1 walk in 6 and 1/3 innings and allowed 2 gopher
balls.  Honolulu out-hit Pocono for the game, 10 hits to 5.  
 
Zambrano was helped out by Jose Arredondo who recorded his 1st save.  Ricky
Nolasco(8-7) was charged with the loss.  He was touched for 3 homeruns in his
9 innings of work.

Brandon Webb came through with a solid 10 innings as the Honolulu Hawaiians
defeated the Pocono Chin Music in 10 innings by a score of 2 to 0 at
Thunderdome.
 
Neither team scored in the first nine innings.  Honolulu came out the victor
in the 10th inning.  After an out was recorded, Nate McLouth started the
attack as he smacked a single.  Dan Haren then uncorked a wild pitch.  One
out later, Asdrubal Cabrera stepped in and he laced a one-base hit.  Aaron
Rowand came up and he lashed a single.  Yadier Molina stepped into the box
and laced a base-knock.  Pocono went down quietly in the bottom of the 10th.
 
Webb(5-5) went the distance for the shutout. Haren(5-9) was tagged with the
loss.  He pitched 9 and 2/3 innings allowing only 6 hits and 1 walk.
 
Bill Anderson, Jr. was obviously impressed with the pitching of Webb, 'That
guy made us look a little silly out there this afternoon.  We just couldn't
get to him at all - everything was working for him.  I just hope that he got
that kinda performance out of his system.'

Third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff jacked one out of the ballyard and had 3 RBI at
Thunderdome where the Pocono Chin Music beat the Springfield Isotopes 7 to
4.
 
Pocono came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning scoring 3
runs using 3 hits.  Bengie Molina started the inning off right when he drew a
walk.  Torii Hunter came next and he smacked a single.  Hunter was running on
the next pitch and he stole second.  After an out was recorded, Kouzmanoff
stepped in and he clubbed a three-run home run (his 10th of the season).  One
out later, Kaz Matsui stepped in and he doubled.  Joe Inglett added to the
uprising and was walked intentionally.  Pocono had 9 hits for the afternoon.
 
Bobby Jenks(2-3) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings.
Damaso Marte(5-1) ended up with the loss in relief.  Pocono now has a record
of 33-45.  Doug Sherlag was pretty down after the loss.  'We've really been
sputtering along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two.  That
won't get it done.'

3 RBI at Thunderdome where the Pocono Chin Music beat the Springfield
Isotopes by the score of 8 to 2.
 
Aurilia enjoyed a big evening at the plate.  He lost the ball over the fence
for three runs (his 4th of the season) in the 1st inning, laced a base-hit in
the 3rd inning and doubled in the 5th inning.  Pocono managed 13 hits in
their victory.  
 
The win was credited to Nolasco(8-6) who went the whole way allowing 2 runs.
C.C. Sabathia(8-3) was charged with the loss.  He gave up 7 runs in 6 and 2/3
innings of work.

Howard had a big day with his bat.  He smacked a three-run homer in the 1st
inning, bombed a two-run dinger (his 13th of the season) in the 3rd inning
and ripped a base-knock in the 4th inning.  Grundy County provided plenty of
action in the 1st inning with 5 runs on 4 hits, the 3rd inning when they had
4 runs on 3 hits and the 6th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 3 hits.
Pocono was out-hit by Grundy County, 17 hits to 11.  
 
The victory was credited to Zack Greinke(4-4) who went 7 and 1/3 innings,
allowing 4 runs. Dan Haren(5-8) was hit with the loss.  He surrendered 5 runs
and 4 hits in 1/3 of an inning.

The Pocono fans enjoyed the offense provided by Anderson.  He doubled scoring
a run in the 1st inning, lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 9th of the season)
in the 3rd inning and slapped a one-base hit in the 5th inning.  Grundy
County had 13 hits in the game while Pocono had 10, but Pocono had the more
timely hits.  
 
The victory was credited to Bronson Arroyo(3-3) who went 6 innings, allowing 2
runs. The loss was charged to Scott Baker(5-2).  He was knocked around pretty
good, giving up 5 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.  
 
With this win, Pocono has a 29-44 record.  They have been 4-6 lately.  Grundy
County can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'.  Now they have a
miserable 2-8 record over the last couple weeks.

were badly beaten by the Lake Champlain Cannibals, 12 to 0.
 
Jackson(3-1) was in control of the game from the outset.  He didn't give up
much, just 2 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings seeing his ERA drop from 5.24 to
3.99.  The right-handed Jackson had his no-hit bid broken up by Marlon Byrd
who singled with two outs in the 6th inning.  Lake Champlain out-hit Pocono
for the game, 14 hits to 3.  
 
Nick Blackburn(3-7) took the loss.  With this win, Lake Champlain has a 26-25
record.  They have been 5-5 lately.  With the loss Pocono now has a record of
28-44.

Lake Champlain was unable to recover after Pocono went ahead in the 2nd inning
scoring 2 runs using 3 hits.  After two were out Torii Hunter began the
Pocono spurt when he doubled.  Orlando Cabrera stepped into the batter's box
and he doubled.  Kouzmanoff then stroked a one-base hit.  That was all Ricky
Nolasco(7-6) needed.  For the game Pocono out-hit Lake Champlain 12 to 5.
 
Luke Hochevar(3-2) was given the loss.  His ERA increased from 3.60 to 4.45 as
he allowed 4 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.  With this win, Pocono has a 28-43
record.  They have been 3-7 lately.  With the loss, the Lake Champlain

Johan Santana was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game as the Pocono Chin Music topped the Miami Surf by a score of 5
to 3 at Thunderdome.
 
Pocono tallied 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning when they had 3 base
hits.  The critical plate appearance was by Marlon Byrd who electrified
Thunderdome when he tripled scoring two baserunners.  Pocono had 10 hits for
the night.  
 
Santana(5-7) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 3 runs. Josh
Beckett(4-2) was hit with the loss.  He pitched 8 innings giving up 10 hits
and 1 walk.

Music by the score of 4 to 0 at Thunderdome.
 
Hamels(4-4) was on top of his game.  He gave up just 5 hits and no walks in 9
innings lowering his ERA to 3.23.  Miami finished with 9 hits in the victory.
 
The loss was charged to Bronson Arroyo(2-3).  He pitched 8 and 2/3 innings
giving up 7 hits and 2 walks. 'Hamels pitched a gem of a game', Bill
Anderson, Jr. recounted.  'He kept our batters off balance the entire game.'

Albert Pujols blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Vermont Fighting Sioux
rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Pocono Chin Music, 6 to
5.
 
Vermont erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning with 3
runs on 3 hits.  Kelly Shoppach led off the inning for Vermont when he was
hit by a pitch.  Casey Blake came to the plate and laced a base-hit.  Bobby
Jenks then bounced one in the dirt for a wild pitch.  Akinori Iwamura stepped
in and he lined a one-base hit.  After an out was recorded, Jenks stepped up
to the plate and he was wild with a pitch.  Coco Crisp added his contribution
to the rally and delivered a single.  Crisp took second on the throw.  Lyle
Overbay came to the plate and drew a walk.  This was the kind of game that
many fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times.  
 
Ramon Ramirez(3-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 and 2/3 innings and
allowing no runs. Jenks(1-3) was given the loss in relief.  
 
Justin Rabidoux was feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office
after the game, 'Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just
sat there in silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating
wildly, and the stadium is cloaked in virtual silence.  Weird. but GREAT!'

Prince Fielder ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Ricky Nolasco delivered 9
solid innings as the Pocono Chin Music clobbered the outmatched Vermont
Fighting Sioux, 11 to 1.
 
Fielder provided much of the offense.  He smashed a two-run homer in the 2nd
inning and popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 7th of the season) in
the 4th inning.  Pocono had 11 hits for the night.  
 
Nolasco(6-6) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Ubaldo Jimenez(3-6)
was the loser.  Nolasco was obviously very pleased with his performance in
the aftermath of the game, 'It was just one of those games where everything
worked.  My arm felt great, heck, I could have pitched another two or three
innings.  I only hope that I can do it again next time out!'

Ervin Santana reeled off a total of 11 strikeouts at Thunderdome where the
Vermont Fighting Sioux beat the Pocono Chin Music by the score of 5 to
1.
 
Santana(6-1) gave a fine effort for Vermont.  He went 7 and 1/3 innings
surrendering 9 hits and 1 walk.  Vermont and Pocono each finished the
afternoon with 12 hits.  
 
B.J. Ryan earned the save, his 6th.  Dan Haren(5-7) took the loss.  Santana,
when asked about his 11 strikeout performance noted, 'The important thing is
that we won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team? But, on
the other hand, since we won it feels great!'

Troy Tulowitzki left the yard and had 2 RBI at Thunderdome as the Illinois
Chow Chows beat the Pocono Chin Music by the count of 4 to 3.
 
Illinois won the game with a rally in the top of the 8th inning scoring 3 runs
utilizing 3 base hits.  Carlos Beltran started the inning off right when he
doubled.  One out later, Martin Prado was the next batter, but he struck out.
Marcus Thames then laced a one-base hit.  Bourn was safe at second on a
stolen base.  Tulowitzki came to the plate and bombed a two-run dinger (his
2nd of the season).  Pocono made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable
to push the needed runs across.  
 
The win was credited to Jesse Carlson(2-2) who went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing
no runs. Carlson got help from Joe Nathan who earned his 11th save.  Bobby
Jenks(1-2) suffered the loss in relief.

John Maine was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete
game and left fielder Josh Willingham had 2 base hits as the Illinois Chow
Chows beat the Pocono Chin Music by a score of 3 to 2.
 
Illinois came up with 1 run in the 6th inning.  Pocono threatened in the 9th
but their rally came up short.  
 
Maine(4-2) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. The loss was
charged to Bronson Arroyo(2-1).  He pitched 9 innings allowing 7 hits and 3
walks.
 
'It felt really nice to get this win,' Maine said. 'I kind of dictated the
game. It's what I get paid to do. It worked out this time.'
