Shield Game v Aughawillan
On Saturday evening the Seniors travelled to Aughawillan and came away with a win.

The Gaels had the bare fifteen players, but produced a good performance and got a deserved victory.

The Gaels led at halftime m 0-7 to 0-5.

In the second half a great penalty save from Jesse Mc Guinness, stopped the home side drawing level.

Final score was Melvin Gaels 0-13, Aughawillan 0-7.

The Gaels team was:

Junior Game v Bornacoola
The Juniors travelled to Bornacoola on Sunday and recorded another good league win.

The Gaels are still unbeaten in the Junior league and they made sure to keep this great run going in Bornacoola.

There were some great scores taken in this game with the highlight great goal from Fergal Gallagher.

There was some good goalkeeping from Peter O Reilly , once again with a good performance from the whole team.

The team was: Peter O Reilly, Shane Mc Carron, Joe Mc Gowan, Sean Kilkenny, Blaine Mulligan, Anthony Tiffoney, Shane Ryan, Daniel Branley Bernard Mc Gowan, Packie Hill, Jesse Mc Guinness, James Bredin, Thomas Lipsett, Declan roper and Fergal Gallagher.

Subs used: Gary Mc Gurran, Kevin Corby, Peter Mc Gowan and Gary Morris.

Games at the weekend
On Saturday evening the seniors travel to Drumreilly for a Shield game at 6.30pm. On Sunday the Juniors are at Melvin Park where they take on Dromahaire in the Junior League.

Throw in for this game is 12 noon.

Lá na gClub Big Football and Sports Day in Melvin Park

There was a large crowd in Melvin Park on Sunday for La na gClub . There was fun for all the family, football for all ages as well as other novelty events.

The weather was kind so this meant that the events were able to go on from 1pm to 9pm.

The pillow fighting , golf and nail-driving and Mystery Man went well.

The Club would like to thank everyone who put in such an effort to make the day such a success.

Thanks to everyone who sponsored the different events on the day.

The entertainment provided by new group Fusebox and now well known Stonefree was enjoyed by all- young and not so young. Thanks to both these groups. Their music was an inspiration to all and especially to the ‘Over Forties’ who took to the field at about 7.30pm.

Overall this was a great day and the Club would like to thank everyone who supported the celebrations in any way.

Senior League v Ballinamore

On Saturday afternoon the Gaels recorded their second Senior League win of the year when they defeated Sean o Heslins, Ballinamore by the narrowest of margins.

The Gaels played their best football in the first half and went into the break leading by six points even though they were playing against a strong wind. In the second half playing with the wind they struggled and it was Sean O Heslins who played some good football drawing level near the end.

The Gaels were missing number of first team players through injury but the players who came in did well.

The final score was Melvin Gaels 1-8 Sean O Heslins 0-10.

Junior League v Ballinaglera

The juniors went to Ballinaglera on Sunday and came away with a draw after having a good lead at half time.

The final score was 2-7 for Melvin Gaels and 0-13 for Ballinaglera.

It was a mixed weekend for the Gaels with the seniors losing to Aughawillan on Saturday evening in Aughawillan by the narrowest of margins and the Juniors getting a hard fought win on Sunday against Allen Gaels in Drumshanbo.

Next Saturday the seniors take on Sean O Heslins, Ballinamore in Melvin Park at 3.30pm and the Juniors take on Ballinaglera on Monday at 2pm in Ballinaglera.

Melvin Gaels will be holding activities in Melvin Park for the Club’s Celebrations.

Senior League v Bornacoola

The Gaels recorded their first Senior League win of 2009 when they took on Bornacoola in Melvin Park on Saturday evening last.

This was a good display by the Gaels with a lot of good performances all over the field , particularly in the first half, which they finished 1-8 to 0-1 ahead.

A very well taken goal from Paul Brennan, capped a great performance.

Bornacoola started better in the second half, but they were unable to cut the Gaels lead and goals from Stephen Mc Gurran and BB Brennan and some good scores from Packie Hill and Conor Sheridan ensured a comfortable victory for the Gaels.

Final score was Melvin Gaels 3-12, Bornacoola 0-7.

Well done to all concerned.

The next games for the Gaels are a senior league game on Saturday in Aughawillan and a Junior game on Sunday against Allen Gaels in Drumshanbo

Good Luck Patsy

The Club would like to wish Patsy Mc govern health and happiness in his retirement from the Gardai.

Junior League v Glencar/Manorhamilton

On Saturday evening in Melvin Park, the Gaels Junior Team took on Glencar/Manorhamilton and succeeded in making it three wins in a row.

This was a hard fought, but deserved win for the Gaels.

Glencar/Manorhamilton went into the lead with an early goal, but the Gaels recovered and went into the break a point ahead, 0-4 to 1-0.

In the second half the Gaels went into a three point lead but Glencar/Manorhamilton fought back to draw level .

The Gaels recovered and finished two points ahead.

Final score Melvin Gaels 0-9, Glencar/Manorhamilton 1-4.

Junior League v Aughawillan
The Juniors had their first league win of 2009 against Aughawillan on Sunday in Melvin Park.
They were in control of this game all the way through. The Gaels played their best football in the first half and went into the break leading 2-5 to 0-4.

Two goals in quick succession from Fergal Gallagher put the Gaels in control.
The second half was a much closer affair with both sides scoring four points each.
The final score was Melvin Gaels 2-9 Aughawillan 0-8.

Hard Luck to the Leitrim Under 21 team on Saturday when they were defeated by Sligo.
Well done to Melvin Gaels players, Conor Sheridan, Paul Brennan, Paul Og Ferguson and Jesse Mc Guinness who were on the panel.

Hard luck also to the Leitrim Senior team who were defeated by Waterford on Sunday. Good to see Emyln back again.

1962 Champions
The story of the Melvin Gaels team of 1962 getting their Senior Championship medals has made nearly all the national papers last week.

Michael McGowan and Brendan Mc Gowan had their photos in all the papers, hopefully all the publicity will not go to their heads!

After forty seven years it was a great honour for all the ex players and others involved with the club.

1962 county champions are finally rewarded

VICTORY has never tasted so sweet for the members of a GAA team who finally received their championship medals after a wait of almost 50 years.

But for Liam McGowan, a midfielder on the 1962 Melvin Gaels team, justice has finally been done.

The Leitrim side became embroiled in the longest-running dispute in the history of the GAA over the 1962 senior county football championship.

Although the Kinlough-based Melvin Gaels beat Aughavas in the final, the competition was declared void following an objection by semi-finalists Ballinamore, who had failed to show up, allowing Melvin Gaels to progress.

Objections
Ballinamore claimed they had not been notified of the semi-final date and venue. Objections and counter-objections finally prompted a frustrated Leitrim County Board to declare the championship void, leaving Melvin Gaels empty-handed.

Last year, the controversy was re-opened when they persuaded the Connacht Council to declare them the valid 1962 champions. And finally, last week Leitrim County Board accepted the ruling and the team was presented with medals at a function in Bundoran, Co Donegal.

"It's really lovely to know that after so long things are put right. We won the title fair and square and the dispute should never have happened," said Mr McGowan, a retired school principal. "I think the players are very pleased that at last justice is done."

But not all of the team of 1962 could attend the presentation. Two have since died and others were unable to travel due to illness or other commitments.

Mr McGowan acknowledged the contribution of Ballinamore to the final resolution by not lodging an objection to the Leitrim County Board.

His medal will now occupy a place of honour in his Kinlough home.

Dinner and Presentation Dance
Saturday night was a great night for the Club at the Dinner and Presentation Dance in the Great Northern Hotel.

County Chairman Gerry McGovern presented the Senior League 2008 medals to the present team.

County Secretary, Declan Bohan presented the 1962 Senior Championship medals to the panel of players from that time. This was a great surprise for all those involved.

Club Chairman, Terry Tiffoney, presented Certificates to all involved with the Club on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Clubs first senior championship win in 1959.

Overall it was a fantastic night. Congratulations to Conor Sheridan on winning Player of the Year for 2008.

The Club would like to than Leitrim County Board and Connaght Council for the manner in which they dealt with the issue of the 1962 Championship.

Melvin Gaels would also like to thank Sean O Heslins Club for the manner in which it approached the issue.

Shield Game V Gortlettaragh
On Saturday afternoon the Gaels took on Gortletterragh in the first Shield game of the year.

This was a hard fought game and both sides will feel they should have won but in the end a draw probably was a fair result .

Gortletterragh got off to a great start with a goal in the first minute and led 1-2 to 0-2 at the interval.
Gortletterargh scored one other point in the second half to Melvin Gaels four.

The Gaels will be happy enough with this result considering the number of first team players missing, but the number of wides from both teams will be a concern

Thanks to The Melvin for supplying food after the game.

Melvin Gaels Stephen’s Day Charity Game
Melvin Gaels Seniors/Juniors took on the Under 21 team in the Annual Charity Game on St Stephen’s Day in Melvin Park. The good weather ensured there was a great turnout for the game. The Senior/Junior team were narrow winners in the end with Senior Manager, Val Murray, giving a great performance.

The money raised from the collection this year is going to help raise funds for Gerda Benz, Wardhouse, Tullaghan who is going on her annual trip to Lima, Peru where she teaches the street children.
The total amount collected was €320.00.

Thanks to all the players and supporters who turned out and to Ciara and Edel who provided refreshments after the game.

The AGM of the Club took place on December 15 in the Community Centre.

Outgoing Secretary, Joe Mc Carron will remain as Assistant Secretary, outgoing Treasurer, James Mc Gowan will remain as assistant Treasurer and Gareth Phelan remains as Vice Chairman..

Good Luck to all the new officers and hopefully the club can progress in 2009.
Winning the Senior League in 2008 was a great achievement and hopefully it will be the start of many good years to come.

Young guns steer Melvin Gaels to League crown

A new era may be about to start for Melvin Gaels as they claimed the 2008 Masonite League Division One crown last Sunday in Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada, defeating great rivals and County Champions Glencar/Manorhamilton without three of their greatest servants.

MASONITE LEAGUE DIVISION 1
MELVIN GAELS 3-8
GLENCAR/MANORHAMILTON 3-6

Forced to line out without the injured James & Gareth Phelan and the absent Colin Regan, the Kinlough men were missing three of the key links from their 1998 Championship winning side, three players who have been the backbone of Melvin Gaels teams for years.

Yet in their absence, a ferociously committed and hungry Melvin Gaels proved the better team in most sectors of the field and were convincing winners, except for a dramatic finale that saw Glencar/Manor grab two injury time goals!

Minus their experienced trio, the young Gaels stepped up to the plate and took on responsibility where it might have previously been left to others, a feature of the game that spells good news for the Kinlough side in the years ahead.

But what Melvin Gaels did display was a ferocious hunger for victory, something that was evident the minute they ran onto the field. Everyone worked their socks off and while their old failing of fading out of games may have hampered them once or twice during the game, their commitment never dropped.

Going for the double, Glencar/Manor never displayed the same sort of desire as their neighbours.

It was clear that the Gaels would run through a brick wall in pursuit of the ball but at the end of a long, tiring season, Glencar/Manor didn´t seem to have the same sort of motivation as several of their players stood up and watched after they lost possession.

Yet the Manor men came very close to pulling off a great escape with two late goals that caused quite a deal of consternation on the Melvin Gaels bench. With two minutes of added time announced, James Glancy scored what seemed to no more than a consolation goal.

But the drama heightened as added time continued for another three minutes and the Championship winners grabbed yet another goal, putting Melvin Gaels under ferocious pressure in a dramatic finish to a game where the Kinlough men had dominated.

Gareth Phelan has been a permanent fixture in the Gaels goals for years but young Jesse McGuinness did a man of the match job in denying Glencar/Manor certain goals on at least three occasions, fantastic saves that hint at a long future between the posts.

Colm McGowan also came up with a vital goal-line clearance in the first half as Fabian McMorrow led a defence that might have creaked and groaned under the pressure but one that never gave up battling, working and fighting.

Emlyn Mulligan mightn´t have rung up the sort of figures he normally does but that would ignore a vital contribution in controlling the flow of the Melvin Gaels game-plan.The County man showed a different side of his game, controlling the pace in the second half, using his head and doing all the unglamorous work that wins games.

Conor Sheridan, Paul Brennan, Paul Og Ferguson, Stephen McGurran all epitomised the never-say-die work ethic of Melvin Gaels as they spent as much time harrying Glencar/Manor, often in the Gaels half of the field, as they did attacking and causing problems for the Manor rearguard.

Emlyn Mulligan opened the scoring with a first minute free but had a shot from the right wing gathered by Manor keeper Gary Loughlin shortly after.

Replicating Mulligan´s feats, Adrian Croal first had a narrow wide after a run but followed up with a lovely point after a Pat Gilmartin catch set Dominic Kelly free following a good pass.

Melvin Gaels almost broke through for a goal on five minutes when a high ball broke loose to Emlyn Mulligan some 20 yards in front of the Manor goal on five minutes. However, the County man blasted a horrible wide in a real let-off.

But the Kinlough side didn´t have to wait long for the breakthrough as the ball broke again from a long delivery and David McSharry drilled a wonderful low shot to the Manor net for a dramatic goal.

Both sides were guilty of poor misses with Manor´s attempt at an instant reply thwarted when the County Champions opened up the Gaels rearguard only for Colm McGowan to block the shot on the line with a fabulous block. From the rebound, Dominic Kelly shot wide in a costly miss.

Kelly then let his frustration get the better of him as he was booked for a foul on Paul Brennan, Emlyn Mulligan sending a monster 55 yard free over the bar in a brilliant score on 12 minutes.

Paul Brennan hit a wide but made immediate amends with a great score from the corner as Melvin Gaels broke quickly and effectively.

However, this finally spurred Glencar/Manor into action as James Glancy & Alan Sweeney both knocked over quick points to narrow the gap to a goal. And they reduced that lead further when Fintan McGourty, who got away with a few steps, twice dodged tackles to fire over from 40 yards.

Glencar/Manor then put together a wonderful team point, started when David Poniard absorbed a big hit on the right wing.
He shook it off and the ball went through two or three hands before Darren Sweeney scored a great point from the right wing on 23 minutes.

Melvin Gaels looked in real trouble at this stage but they showed real mettle, even if their first point in 13 minutes was a missed goal chance! Mulligan and Paul Brennan broke clear and set up Brendan Brennan straight in front of the goal, only six or seven yards out.

A goal looked certain but a fantastic full-length diving block from Shane Devaney saw the shot deflected across the bar.

Mulligan then added a brilliant effort from the left wing, a free that curled in and over the bar before Conor Sheridan added a final coup de grace when Dominic Kelly lost the ball out the field and Melvin Gaels quickly worked the ball to Sheridan for a fine point.

That left Melvin Gaels 1-6 to 0-5 in front at the break

That lead was almost wiped out just seconds into the second half when a free was fisted across the Gaels goal to Brian McDonald. The corner-forward hesitated a fraction and Jesse McGuinness made a wonderful diving save to push the ball around the post.

Manor put a lot of pressure on but all they had to show for it was a James Glancy free on four minutes. It seemed as if the double was gone from their grasp five minutes later when a great move down the wing saw Paul McGurran charge towards the Manor goal.

Having played a one-two with Paul Brennan, McGurran seemed as if he had run into a cul-de-sac when surrounded by three defenders but he worked the ball back to Brennan who came charging past a static defence and floated a ball across the face of the goal to his unmarked brother Brendan who fisted the ball to the net.

It was a crucial score and Manor heads definitely dropped, so much so that Fabian McMorrow popped up from centre-back with a brilliant 40-yard point on 15 minutes.

But Manor showed they weren´t gone yet when McGuinness made another great save, tipping a fisted Glancy effort onto the post and clear after an Adrian O´Flynn shot dropped short on 19 minutes.

However, Glancy wasn´t to be denied and after two Melvin Gaels defenders got in a mix-up with a high ball, the County man fisted Brian McDonald´s pass to the Gaels net on 21 minutes.

Glancy´s roller-coaster took another turn when he had a bad wide from a free and Melvin Gaels made them pay with a peach of a goal. The Gaels broke with Emlyn Mulligan and Conor Sheridan making the most of gaps appearing in the Manorhamilton rearguard.

Sheridan played a ball over the top to Brennan who broke through a tackle and then chipped Gary Loughlin for an outstanding goal on 26 minutes.
That seemed to be that, particularly when Packie Hill set up Mulligan for his team´s last point.

Indeed, it seemed as if a penalty a minute into the two minutes of added time announced was nothing more than a consolation when Brendan Brennan clearly lay on the ball as Glencar/Manor sought a late consolation.

James Glancy stroked the penalty home but it seemed like nothing more than a late consolation, particularly as the announced time was almost up.

However, referee Brendan Sammon showed no inclination to blow the final whistle and play continued. Incredibly for a team that never got going in attack, Manor struck for a third goal.

Again a high ball in the goal-mouth caused the problems with Pat Gilmartin drilling home to suddenly leave just two minutes in it after three minutes of added time.

With Melvin Gaels mentors and players getting increasingly annoyed by the amount of added time being played, Manor continued to attack but the Gaels held firm, blocking James Glancy´s free to claim the League crown.

League Winners!
There were jubilant scenes in Pairc Sean on Sunday afternoon when Melvin Gaels Senior team overcame Neighbours and 2008 County Champions, Glencar/Manorhamilton in the Senior League Final. Games between these clubs have been very close over the last number of years and this game would give the same impression if you looked at the final score 3-8 to 3-6.

For anyone lucky enough to be at this very good game the Gaels were the better team and but for conceding two goals in the ‘ extra long’ period of injury time would have won more comfortably. The Gaels went into this game with three first team players; Gareth Phelan, James Phelan and Colin Regan all unavailable, but they produced some great football. They led from the start and Glencar/Manor could only get to within a point of the Gaels and that was about twenty minutes into the game.

This was an excellent performance from the Gaels team and there were a number of candidates for ‘man of the match’. It was a credit to both teams, for giving such a good display of football at this time of year.
The Gaels last won the League in 1966, forty-two years ago but it was worth the wait.

Thanks to all who came out and supported the team on the day. The lads got a great welcome on arriving back in Kinlough on Sunday evening.

Thanks to the Melvin Hotel, Gilmartin's Wellington Bar, McGloin's Anglers Rest and the Village Inn for the great reception they gave the team and supporters.

Well done to Val, David, Michael and Liam and all the lads for all their work over this long year of football.

Senior League Final
The Senior League Final takes place on Sunday next in Pairc Sean, Carrick between the Gaels and Glencar/Manorhamilton.

This will be a close encounter as usual.

Throw in for this game is 1.30pm.

Under 21 A Championship Semi-Final
The Gaels Under 21 team were beaten by the narrowest of margins in Ballinaglera on Saturday afternoon by Glencar/Manorhamilton.

This was a very entertaining game and the game could have gone either way up until the final minutes.

The Gaels had the better of the first half but failed to take all their chances and the sides went into the break all square- five points each. The Gaels had a total of five wides to Glencar/Manorhamilton’s one.

The second half was more even with Glencar/Manor coming out on top by a single point.

This was a very entertaining game, played on a tricky surface.

Final score Melvin Gaels 0-11 Glencar/Manor 0-12.

The Gaels gave their all and have performed very well in their first year in the Under 21 A Championship. Well done to all concerned. Thanks to Ciara for providing food after the game.

The numbers drawn in the Melvin Gaels Lotto Draw held in the Anglers Rest, Kinlough on Sunday night were- 5,15,20 and 24.

There was no Jackpot winner.
