A flâneur is thus a person who walks the city, looking at buildings and places -- watching the passersby, thinking and being inspired. I particularly love when this way of seeing the world is translated through photography. The photos of<span style="color:#000000;"> </span><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRPCHgHsNXM"><span style="color:#666600;">Willy Ronis </span></a>(above) for example. His rather well known photos of Paris give me such inspiration in my own attempts at photography. Most of us simply don't feel we should spend our time as flanuers. It just isn't productive or something. What a shame. I think when the moment comes, and we face our last day on this planet -- that we will have wished for more time to work, but more to play. Time to be "in the moment" -- to savor life, and it's beauty.</div><div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span></div></div>Sabinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15289114941414019127sdeshazo@pacbell.nettag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1998998681683533978.post-51343265613482882292008-08-14T12:12:00.000-07:002008-08-14T16:55:24.129-07:00Portable Snack - High Energy Mix<span style="color:#ffffff;">_<br /></span><div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SJzr4--KPHI/AAAAAAAADFg/lfGA4VNv4es/s1600-h/23370060.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5232316231306591346" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SJzr4--KPHI/AAAAAAAADFg/lfGA4VNv4es/s200/23370060.jpg" border="0" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SJzry_93K9I/AAAAAAAADFY/Ep8q2EBCK7c/s1600-h/23268769.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5232316128494562258" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SJzry_93K9I/AAAAAAAADFY/Ep8q2EBCK7c/s200/23268769.jpg" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SJzsP8YUHOI/AAAAAAAADFo/qBAeQ8-yYMI/s1600-h/23370107.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5232316625747975394" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SJzsP8YUHOI/AAAAAAAADFo/qBAeQ8-yYMI/s200/23370107.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SJzsP73LQiI/AAAAAAAADFw/4PpKfdUD2is/s1600-h/23455342.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5232316625608983074" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SJzsP73LQiI/AAAAAAAADFw/4PpKfdUD2is/s200/23455342.jpg" border="0" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SJzsxg_iiAI/AAAAAAAADGQ/q-EKvaSbLoA/s1600-h/23236253.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5232317202511857666" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SJzsxg_iiAI/AAAAAAAADGQ/q-EKvaSbLoA/s200/23236253.jpg" border="0" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SJzsQCDNikI/AAAAAAAADF4/SMFRa7nfDMM/s1600-h/23456647.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5232316627270076994" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SJzsQCDNikI/AAAAAAAADF4/SMFRa7nfDMM/s200/23456647.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div><div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><div><span style="font-size:130%;">2 Parts Nuts to 1 Part Dried Fruit</span></div><div></div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><div><span style="color:#cc6600;">Pumpkin Seeds (lowest in calories)</span></div><div><span style="color:#cc6600;">Almonds</span></div><div><span style="color:#cc6600;">Sunflowers Seeds</span></div><div><span style="color:#cc6600;"></span></div><div><span style="color:#cc6600;">Raisins</span></div><div><span style="color:#cc6600;">Dried Cranberries</span></div><div><span style="color:#cc6600;">Dried Apricots<br /></span></div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><div>In a large bowl combine all. </div><div></div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_<br /></span><div>Bag 1/3 of a cup of the mixture to take along with you or for kids. I would pick a book, and read a little to them each night by candlelight. One of those books was the story of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/One-Thousand-Paper-Cranes-Childrens/dp/0440228433/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1218168328&sr=8-3"><span style="color:#666600;">"Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes"</span></a> -- a true story about a girl who lived in Japan. </span></div><div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span></div><div><span style="color:#000000;">She was just two years old when the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima Aug. 6,1945. Although she survived the blast -- at age eleven she was diagnosed with Leukemia, "the atom bomb" disease. Sadako's best friend told her of an old Japanese legend that anyone who folds a thousand paper cranes would be granted a wish. Sadako hoped that her wish, to get well, would be granted. She started to work on the paper cranes and completed over 644 before dying on October 25, 1955 at the age of twelve. Her friends folded the remaining 356 cranes. </span></div><div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span></div><div><span style="color:#000000;">My son Ben actually picked this book out. I had never heard of it, but as we read together each night - a tragic - but beautiful story unfolded. Many days passed and on the final night, as I reached the last page of the book, tears welled up in my eyes. I remember my two little boys faces, shining in the candlelight, looking at me as I struggled to read the final sentences. It was such beautiful story with a powerful message of courage and spirit. </span></div><div><span style="color:#000000;"></span></div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_<br /></span><div><span style="color:#000000;">Children and adults continue to fold these cranes even today, and every year cranes are sent to Hiroshima as a symbol of peace. In 1958, a statue of Sadako holding a golden crane was unveiled in Hiroshima Peace Park. The children also made a wish which is inscribed at the bottom of the statue and reads:</span><span style="font-size:130%;color:#cc9933;">"This is our cry, This is our prayer, Peace in the world".</span></div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><div><span style="color:#000000;"></span></div><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SJuumGcYdDI/AAAAAAAADEg/lABi2eFVPcA/s1600-h/GE06_33_ce.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231967361708880946" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SJuumGcYdDI/AAAAAAAADEg/lABi2eFVPcA/s400/GE06_33_ce.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><div><span style="color:#000000;">On August 6, 1945, the atomic bomb took the lives of over 200,000 Hiroshima residents. More than 90% of the city was damaged by the blast; around the epicenter, nearly all of the people died instantly, and most of the buildings were destroyed without a trace. Three days later, on August 9, 1945, another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki which left 120,000 people dead. Today, the epicenters of both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki blasts have been turned into Peace Memorial Parks. Each year on August 6 and 9, respectively, a ceremony is held at each park to remember the victims of the atomic bombs and to pray for world peace. </span></div><div><span style="color:#000000;"></span></div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><div><span style="color:#000000;">Maybe we can all take the time to say a prayer with them. style="color:#993300;">I am hoping</span><span style="color:#993300;"> to get this wonderful traveling display of photos presented at my children's school this coming year. Through first-person accounts and positive images, this exhibit seeks to challenge and change damaging myths and stereotypes about LGBT people and their families. At the most basic level, Love Makes A Family combats homophobia by breaking silence and making the invisible visible. By encouraging people of all ages - beginning in early childhood - to affirm and appreciate diversity, this traveling rental exhibit contributes to the process of dismantling the destructive power of prejudice and intolerance, thereby making the world a safer place for all families.<br />Designed for audiences of all ages.<br /><div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_<br /></span><div><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SGhNNVUZhFI/AAAAAAAAC8A/8ijNnJqsljQ/s1600-h/437_lovemakesafamily2.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5217505059765060690" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SGhNNVUZhFI/AAAAAAAAC8A/8ijNnJqsljQ/s400/437_lovemakesafamily2.jpg" border="0" /></a> </div><div></div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_<br /></span><div>Elsasser-Robinson Family "Our family life is a very traditional American one - early morning getting up, eating breakfast, getting dressed, making sure everyone has matching socks, getting the boys off to school, and then going to work. At night, it's homework and getting ready for bed. Michael and I have been class parents in Zach's and Justin's classes every single year. We could not imagine living without children. It's a wonderful experience to watch our boys develop and mature." </div><div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SGhNvErndhI/AAAAAAAAC8Q/i57TVjY5D_k/s1600-h/437_lovemakesafamily.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5217505639414593042" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SGhNvErndhI/AAAAAAAAC8Q/i57TVjY5D_k/s400/437_lovemakesafamily.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /></div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_<br /></span><div>Stokes Family "Family means the people who look out for me and treat me with love and respect. My family are the people who are in my life practically every day. These people are my mother, her partner Jaqué, and my twin brother Edwian. We like to go to the park sometimes where we play basketball and baseball. I like to ride my bike with Jaqué especially in Prospect Park near our apartment. We all like to ride our bikes as a family and go places together. We always do things that include our whole family. Don’t be ashamed of who your parents are." </div></div></div></div></div>Sabinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15289114941414019127sdeshazo@pacbell.nettag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1998998681683533978.post-14718310487140841372008-06-24T16:39:00.000-07:002008-06-24T17:49:46.811-07:00An American Original<a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SGGMS_6o6nI/AAAAAAAAC74/7iGy7-691-E/s1600-h/tudor.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215604101494663794" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SGGMS_6o6nI/AAAAAAAAC74/7iGy7-691-E/s400/tudor.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div><span style="font-size:78%;">(Tasha Tudor Aug. 28, 1915 - June 18, 2008)<br /></span><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><div><div>I recently found out that <a href="http://barefootintheorchard.blogspot.com/2007/09/tasha-tudor.html"><span style="color:#cc6600;">Tasha Tudor</span> </a>- one of my personal heroes - has died. I can't wait!! </div><div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_<br /></span><div><span style="font-size:130%;color:#cc6600;">June </span></div><div></div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><div><span style="font-size:85%;color:#666600;"><strong>n = newly in season</strong></span></div><div><span style="font-size:85%;color:#666600;"><strong>p = peak of season</strong></span></div><div><span style="font-size:85%;color:#666600;"><strong>w = winding down</strong></span></div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_<br /></span><div><a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SFbcFC-HsRI/AAAAAAAAC6Y/yLK4WxVedJ4/s1600-h/23398629.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212595597982806290" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SFbcFC-HsRI/AAAAAAAAC6Y/yLK4WxVedJ4/s400/23398629.jpg" border="0" /></a> </div><div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_<br /></span><strong>Vegetables</strong></div><div></div><div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span></div><div>• beans, green (n)</div><div>• beets (w)</div><div>• carrots (w)</div><div>• corn (n)</div><div>• cucumber (n)</div><div>• garlic (n)</div><div>• eggplant (n)</div><div>• greens: kale• lettuces (w)</div><div>• onions, red<br />• onions, sweet: <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Vidalia</span> (p)</div><div>• onions, sweet: Walla Walla (w)</div><div>• peas: English / shelling (w)</div><div>• potatoes</div><div>• squash, summer (n)</div><div>• tomatoes (n)</div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><div><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SFbb9k3GXJI/AAAAAAAAC6Q/ApoeyFcdXzg/s1600-h/23268083.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212595469641211026" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SFbb9k3GXJI/AAAAAAAAC6Q/ApoeyFcdXzg/s400/23268083.jpg" border="0" /></a> </div><div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_<br /></span><strong>Fruits</strong></div><div><strong></strong></div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_<br /></span><div>• apricots (p)</div><div>• berries: blackberries (p)</div><div>• berries: blueberries</div><div>• berries: boysenberries (p)</div><div>• berries: loganberries</div><div>• berries: <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">olallieberries</span> (n)</div><div>• berries: raspberries (p)</div><div>• berries: strawberries</div><div>• cherries (n)</div><div>• figs, Black Mission (n)</div><div>• grapes (n)</div><div>• limes (p)</div><div>• melons: cantaloupe (n)</div><div>• melons: honeydew (n)• melons: watermelon (n)</div><div>• nectarines (n)</div><div>• peaches (n)</div><div>• pineapple</div><div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span></div></div></div></div>Sabinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15289114941414019127sdeshazo@pacbell.nettag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1998998681683533978.post-14374508419361182852008-06-15T11:10:00.000-07:002008-07-18T11:53:48.459-07:00My Dad - AKA Papa<a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SE7RMGY7oFI/AAAAAAAAC6I/g3_KWzko_QI/s1600-h/SABINA~1.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210331824718061650" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SE7RMGY7oFI/AAAAAAAAC6I/g3_KWzko_QI/s400/SABINA~1.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:78%;color:#666666;">(Me - Age 5)</span><br /><span style="color:#ffffff;"></span><br /><span style="color:#ffffff;"><span style="color:#000000;">There is a magical time when most little girls think their dads can do anything and that is how I saw my dad. He was the master of anything that needed fixing or building and prepared for any kind of emergency. I loved to help him - whether it was building a fence, working on our boat, or fixing the dishwasher. I would hang around just waiting for the chance to hand him a specific tool or run to get him a cool drink. </span></span><br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><div>When I was 5 years old my dad would put me on his lap and let me drive the family car into the garage. This was not only thrilling but very empowering. When I turned 16 he took me to a large empty parking lot and taught me to drive the stick shift on my new car. After I had mastered the basics he told me to head for a busy street - I hesitated thinking maybe I wasn't ready - but he told me - "yes you are" - and away we went. Moments like those with my dad helped shaped my trust in myself.<br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span></div><div></div><div><span style="color:#ffffff;"><span style="color:#000000;">Another thing about my dad that I've always appreciated is that he is a very sentimental man and not afraid to show it. When he tells the story of how he met my mom (bagging her groceries when he was only 18) and that she was the "prettiest girl he'd ever seen" there is still a twinkle in his eye. What more could any daughter ask for. </span></span></div><div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span></div><div><span style="color:#ffffff;"><span style="color:#000000;">I love and admire you dad more than I can ever express and appreciate all the sacrifices you've made through the years. Thanks for everything!! </span></span></div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><div><span style="font-size:130%;">Happy Fathers Day!!!</span></div><span style="color:#ffffff;">_<br /></span><div>Love you, </div><div>Bean ~ </div><div></div><div>P.S. A guide to organic and other in-the-news terms.</span><br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br />When deciding what to feed your family, you're bound to face a bewildering array of food labels claiming that items are organic, natural or free range. Here’s what these labels mean:<br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><strong><span style="color:#993300;">Growing Conditions</span></strong><br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><strong>Organic</strong><br /><strong><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span></strong><br /><a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SDRzvbdcrKI/AAAAAAAAC1w/UaudZLJv8_o/s1600-h/24170212.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202910728182082722" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SDRzvbdcrKI/AAAAAAAAC1w/UaudZLJv8_o/s200/24170212.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">__<br /></span>If a product bears a "USDA organic" label, you are guaranteed that’s it’s at least 95 free of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers and sewage sludge and that it <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">hasn</span>’t been genetically modified or irradiated. No hormones or antibiotics are allowed; animals must be fed organically-grown feed and have access to the outdoors. While some experts have suggested that organic foods are healthier than conventionally-grown, the USDA <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">doesn</span>’t support these claims.<br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_<br /></span><strong><span style="color:#000000;">Sustainable</span></strong><br /><strong></strong><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SDR0JLdcrMI/AAAAAAAAC2A/I0WqKvi1XEg/s1600-h/24532323.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202911170563714242" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SDR0JLdcrMI/AAAAAAAAC2A/I0WqKvi1XEg/s200/24532323.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br />Sustainable agriculture refers to crops that are raised in ways that don’t harm the environment, are humane to animals, and that supports farm workers and farming communities. Not all sustainable foods are organic — most come from small family farms which may not have the time or resources to get organic certification (it is expensive and time-consuming). A related label is "Fair Trade," which certifies that farmers in developing countries have received a fair price for products like coffee that are grown in a sustainable way.<br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><strong>Natural</strong><br /><strong></strong><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SDRzkbdcrJI/AAAAAAAAC1o/hJwB9llt_bM/s1600-h/23981024.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202910539203521682" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SDRzkbdcrJI/AAAAAAAAC1o/hJwB9llt_bM/s200/23981024.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br />Natural refers to meat and poultry that contains no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. The emphasis is on seasonal, fresh produce, meats and dairy products but these crops may have been raised with pesticides. If the label does not specify that the food any special growing conditions, you should assume it’s conventional. Crops and cattle are raised using synthetic chemicals, like fertilizers and pesticides to curb insect growth and increase the amount of food produced. Farmers can give their animals antibiotics, growth hormones and other medications. This is the way most crops and livestock have been raised in the U.S. for the past 50 years.<br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">__</span><br /><strong><span style="color:#993300;">Hormones and Antibiotics</span></strong><br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><strong>Antibiotic-Free</strong><br /><strong></strong><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SDRza7dcrII/AAAAAAAAC1g/1hgSeCEtZo4/s1600-h/24016451.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202910375994764418" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SDRza7dcrII/AAAAAAAAC1g/1hgSeCEtZo4/s200/24016451.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br />The term "antibiotic-free" is unregulated but producers can label foods "no antibiotics administered" or "raised without antibiotics," which means animals were raised entirely without the substances. Beef may carry a "no hormones administered" label but no outside authority currently certifies this claim. Controversy has arisen over the artificial hormone <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">rBGH</span> which increases milk production. The U.S. is one of the few countries to approve its use; others have banned it because of concerns over human and animal health.<br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br /><span style="color:#993300;"><strong>Animal Welfare</strong></span><br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_<br /></span><strong>Free Range</strong><br /><strong><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span></strong><br /><a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SDRz4LdcrLI/AAAAAAAAC14/Sw0va1SHXVA/s1600-h/24441400.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5202910878505938098" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/__a_C0gnGG1M/SDRz4LdcrLI/AAAAAAAAC14/Sw0va1SHXVA/s200/24441400.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffffff;">_</span><br />Chickens that <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">aren</span>’t confined to cages and are granted access to the outdoors are called "free range."
