Have you considered ride sharing to your classes as a way to save a little cash, as well as being great for the environment?

I've spent a little time researching a few online options for ride sharing for students. I can't personally recommend any of them, but the price is right and they might be worth a try. I also created a forum in the Blackboard Student Activities account to help you connect with other students trying to save a little cash while commuting to campus.

Ride Sharing Links:

http://www.erideshare.com/

http://www.ridecheck.com/ridecheck/

I spent the weekend in St. Louis visiting some friends. It was the first time I've been there so of course I had to check out the arch. I opted not to go up inside of it, I'm not a big fan of heights. There was an intense thunder and lightning show on Saturday night and the light bouncing off of the arch was very cool. Today marks the beginning of the 4 day summer work week at Edison . The building will be closed Friday-Sunday in an effort to reduce summer energy costs.

I've opted to work 10 hour days, and take a full hour for lunch. With a day that lasts that long I think I am going to need a break in the day..not to mention a few times during the day to get up and move around campus to keep myself going. I'm sure in a few weeks I will be adjusted to this new schedule, having 3 day weekends for the summer is going to be great.

I didn't sleep well last night, waking up every few hours with a start, worried that I would oversleep. Kinda silly, I don't think we have imposed the death penalty on campus should that ever happen. :o)

Off to begin my day...

Today's Quote

"If you don't like something, change it. (Eventually words start to run together and I have to get up from the computer, have a small brain shift and come back to reading and reviewing.)

You've Got Mail--it really sounds so simple. One day you come to campus for your summer semester and you have an Edison email address--cool. What you have no idea is the months of preparation that have gone into this project, as well as the man (and woman) hours that continue to go on behind the scenes to support this new initiative.

In order for this to happen, on May 27 & May 28 quite a few of the college systems will be taken down to delete existing information, repopulate that space with your new bright and shiny Edison account. For two days, there will be no access to email, Blackboard, WebAdvisor and the college's Datatel system. On May 29, the systems will come back up and everyone will have a new username/email address--even me!

This project is being launched in the summer to be as little disruption as possible for students, faculty, adjunct faculty and staff. There will be some growing pains for sure in this new venture.

Some helpful links to get you started (Effective May 29, 2008)

Edison Mail

Password Help

Getting Started in Your Online Course

WebAdvisor

Today's Quote
"Any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts." ---Arnold Bennett

The *Big Day*...

You can feel the excitement in the hallways today. It's the last day of the semester and tonight is graduation. There are a lot of people scurrying around readying the campus for tonight's festivities.

I've been a participant in two Edison graduations, once when I received my associate's degree and round two when I received my bachelor's degree. Most of the graduations I work my way up and down the hallways, into the gym and wherever I might find people to capture with my digital camera. I usually get one or two great photos, and a lot of photos that will work through the year in different areas of the Edison web site. Honestly, I just like being in the middle of all of the joy and celebration of the graduates.

Graduation is not the only excitement on campus this week. The campus will be altering summer operation hours beginning May 19, 2008 to August 3, 2008. The building will be open Monday-Thursday and closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Edison e-mail is ramping up full-steam and those involved in summer classes will be the first group of Edison students to have an *official* Edison email address. A great deal of work has already gone into this project--behind the scenes.

Today's Quote
Attitude is everything---but a little sunshine never hurts

I'm going to the moon!

I spent the weekend in Washington, DC with a great friend who works at the Goddard Space Flight Center. She is part of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) project team. Her role in the LRO project is in education outreach. Yep, I spent Friday rubbing elbows with REAL *rocket scientists*.

During my day at Goddard I saw enough science and technology to make my head spin around more than a few times. The pictures on the wall that were captured from the moon and a sundry of other planets were breathtaking.

I was able to tour several buildings at the space and flight center. From the outside, and also the inside it was amazing that these simple concrete walled buildings held so much creativity and innovation. I thought that we had a lot of initials and acronyms in education, but after spending a few days and hearing the jargon I was in the midst of a lot of alphabet soup.

One term that I did recognize was STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). You will notice that term used quite a bit in the new academic catalog. I have to wonder if I was born into a different time if I would have felt the urge to turn to science or math. I think I do work in the technology area, but when I was in high school (We won't discuss how many years ago THAT was :) there were no signs of computers or even the Internet. It's hard to even imagine what the future will be for those entering the STEM related fields today.

The LRO that will be heading to the moon-hopefully before the end of the year was being built in a *clean* chamber. I am standing in front of the prototype that will be used to diagnose and repair problems. (Perhaps they were afraid if they let me near the real LRO I would slap an Edison sticker on and send it to the moon!)

Take a few minutes and send your name to the moon with LRO!

Today's Quote
"It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. It's the last week of the semester, students in my Web Development class have their final presentations tomorrow night. My Teaching & Technology stars will show me their stuff next Wednesday. Both classes have impressed me with their work in the class so far. That's put the bar up there pretty high for their final project presentations. I'm confident they will do a terrific job.

Graduation is one of the best days and nights on this campus. It's a party atmosphere with all sorts of people scurrying around to make sure that things go well. My evening is spent snapping photos in the hopes of catching some images that can be used on the web site in a variety of ways. My evening is rather laid back so I get to take in all of the people running around getting ready for the actual ceremony. After that, we all take a deep breath and send another crop of graduates out the door to a brighter future.

I'm part of a team that has been working on the student email/identity project. It looks like we are about a month away from some major changes on campus. It's an exciting time, and in my heart I know that things are going to be fine. There are so many pieces to this puzzle and getting things to line up right and to go smoothly has taken well over a year of planning. Of course, there will be things that have been missed and a few surprise along the way--but so far we are on track for a summer deployment.

Someone turned the thermostat down over the weekend. Brrrrr.... Hopefully that will change before next week and the end of the year festivities.

Today's Quote

It is important that students bring a certain ragamuffin, barefoot, irreverence to their studies; they are not here to worship what is known, but to question it.
-Jacob Bronowski

Wow...has the weather been terrific this week.

About 2 weeks ago I decided to take a vacation day yesterday as a *mental health* day. I have a PC at home that's needed a ride to Dayton to the repair center for about 6 months .I decided to take a day off so I wouldn't have to drive in crazy Dayton rush hour traffic. I also had a few other things like laundry and household duties calling my name. (They were actually screaming, but I find the ear plugs work for a few days.)

When my youngest daughter, LeighAnna, was a senior in high school she was part of the *Best of the Class* spots on tv. We went to Cox Arboretum for the filming. The filming consisted of her putting on her cap and gown and taking about three steps and we were done. I fell in love with the Arboretum and try to escape there whenever I can to walk along the paths and to hike the trails. I was overwhelmed with the beauty of the place yesterday.

I think I hit on the perfect day for full bloom of all of the spring flowers and the trees in bloom. I actually walked up to the lilac bushes and the flowering trees just to take in the scent of them. (I'm sure more than a few people were pointing at the crazy lady sniffing the plants.)

It was a *perfect* spring day. I don't think I could have planned a day with wonderful weather and such amazing surroundings. Today I am back in my office working on the degree and certificate listings in the new catalog. Lots of changes to be made...

I posted two new press releases this morning:

Creighton to Speak at Edison (This year's commencement speaker)

Psychic Entertainer Returns to Edison Community College on April 30

Today's Quote
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. It felt terrific to be out in the warmth and to enjoy the last minutes of the day huggin' the stuffin' out of mother nature. This morning the skies are looking pretty gloomy and the weather forecast for the next week is a throw back to winter. :o(

Perhaps I should think of this as a peek at things to come and cross my fingers that spring will be here in just a few weeks. It's week 12 of the semester, just 4 more weeks until the end of the semester, and the excitement of the end of the semester and graduation.

What have I been up to?

I have posted a few press releases to the Edison press release blog. Most people tend to hide when I appear with my camera in hand.

Today's Quote

The teacher pretended that algebra was a perfectly natural affair, to be taken for granted, whereas I didn't even know what numbers were. I did my best to hug the stuffin' out of Mother Nature at every opportunity. Saturday I stopped by campus to take photos of the Open House. It's a good chance to catch faculty without having to try to track down when they may be teaching and where on campus. There were a lot of cars in the parking lot, and seemed to be quite a few people talking to academic advisors and other Edison staff.

Sunday I was on the go most of the day. I finished grading my classes for the week and getting things lined up for the week ahead. It's week 12 for my full semester classes and week 4 for my Intro to Marketing class. That means it's the *fun week* of Fun Day Monday, Terrific Tuesday and Wonderful Wednesday. I made Rice Krispie treats covered in chocolate with baby M&Ms on top for my students.

I managed to find time to stop in at the new Cold Stone Creamery in Troy--as did most of the rest of the town. It was crowded, but well worth the wait for my raspberry sorbet waffle gone..with fresh raspberries mixed in...yummy stuff! My next stop was the Stillwater Prairie. It was a little *squishy* in places, but it was just too nice of a day not to be outside enjoying the sunshine and warm weather.

I decided to clean out both of my aquariums when I got home...cleaning the small aquarium was pretty uneventful with the exception of dropping the light cover and knocking the filament out of the bulb. Cleaning my bigger aquarium was a disaster start to finish. I thought I could get away with using one of those gravel cleaning vacumes..bad idea...eventually I surrendered and took everything apart and cleaned it the right way. So far this morning all fish are still alive, although probably in need of some sort of psychiatric intervention after their tank cleaning experience. :o)

Today's Quote

The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another.
The difference between them is sometines as great as a month.

-Henry Van Dyke

Spring Fever!

I think I am starting to feel it today. It was gloomy and overcast when I went out to the mailbox this morning but it was WARM!!! I need to check the weekend forecast to see if there is a little sunshine scheduled for the next few days. It's amazing how much better a person starts to feel with just the hint of spring in the air.

Spring seems to be bringing out a lot of activities on campus in the next few weeks too. From Sean Ford:

Here are some upcoming activities for April!

Wednesday April 9th from 10:00 to 3:00!
WAX Hands in the Cafeteria!
This is a very unique and creative Novelty for most any occasion. Participants dip their hand into a warm vat of perofin wax. Then they make whatever type of "hand pose" they prefer. Once they slip their hand out, they'll have an exact replica of their hand made of wax. Then they have the opportunity to use multiple colors of wax. This enables them to make their molding their own unique design.

April 11, 12, 18, 19 & 20
Hamlet 7:30 p.m. Theater
Death by Chocolate April 11, 2008 6-7:30 p.m.

April 30th - 7:00pm - GYMNASIUM
THIS SHOW IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
THE AMAZING ROBERT CHANNING (WORLD'S FOREMOST MINDREADER!)
Total Audience Participation
ESP • Hypnosis • Mind Reading • Psychic Experiments
A man stands in front of the audience at your next event. You watch as his eyes are covered with two coins. Then they are taped to his head with row after row after row of thick, dark tape. And then a thick blindfold is placed on top of that. There is no way he can see.He is then handed a bowl stuffed with questions from your audience. Without looking at a single question, this now totally blind man somehow reads the questions and the minds of your audience—and answers them. The audience screams, squirms, laughs, and loves this amazing display of the power of the human mind. The man on stage is Robert Channing. He has performed for Edison Community College (4 Times), Ohio State University, Syracuse University, West Point Military Academy, and over 2000 top colleges & universities, movie stars, super stars, heads of states, authors, speakers, and many more...

This event will be the hit of the year and the talk of Edison Community College — GUARANTEED.

Audiences love Robert’s shows!

Take advantage of some of the great activities that are going on at Edison Community College. I accused my classroom DJ of playing music to suck up to the teacher that wasn't *kill your parents* music. (I'm a parent, I have to think about such things.) Wednesday morning the CD popped up again in conversation. (I was getting the impression that the universe was sending me a message that I needed to buy this CD.) I hate the teacup ride, so all of this dizzy spinning around stuff has made me feel like I've been riding the ride and a bit green. It scared me enough to warrant a visit to the doctor this afternoon just to make sure I was really ok. I was relieved that no MRI of my brain was scheduled at this time. A few times a month I sit around a table with the President and assorted vice-presidents and other leaders at Edison. It's definitely expanded my horizons, and enables me to look at the college from another angle.

Today is my day to job share just what I do at Edison. That's a bit of a challenge, since no two days are alike for me at Edison. When I started to put the information together, I took a look back at how I got from being a student in 1998 (here only to take one class) to a member of the president's cabinet almost ten years later.

I have a list of what I do day-to-day, talk about my various online promotions and projects, the classes that I teach here as an adjunct, and my volunteer/community efforts. It's a page and a half of lots of stuf...

As I walked in the building today I was thinking about my job share--and getting it done before the 10:30 meeting this morning. What struck me the most is the opportunities I have had in my nearly 10 years here. How many initiatives I have been a part of that have changed the way that courses are delivered on campus. I'm pretty proud of that.

Taking a deep breath..in 15 minutes I'll sit down with cabinet and tell them just that.

:o)

Today's Quote

COMMUNICATION
Good communication is as stimulating as black coffee and just as hard to sleep after.
- Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Get Your Game On!

It's once again time for March Madness and the craziness that is college basketball. I'm amazed at some of the interesting conversations that I hear between students and from people talking on their cellphones. Yikes!

Some of the noise has been replaced with various construction projects around campus. It is probably much easier moving about on a ladder without hundreds of students zooming by. Not to mention the faculty members probably appreciate the fact that the hammering and drilling outside of their doors is happening while the classrooms are empty.

I can't say that spring break week has been filled with much excitement.
