Results of All India Engineering Entrance Examination were announced by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).The results are available in the CBSE website, www.Cbse.Nic.In.About 9,62,119 students had appeared in the test conducted at 1460 centres across the country.Students qualifying the exam will be eligible for admission to National Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Information Technology, government-funded institutions and deemed universities.There were nearly 78,000 candidates in Delhi. For foreign students, CBSE has set up centres in Dubai and Riyadh.The state-funded engineering institutes have 15 per cent reservation for the students qualifying AIEEE. There were about 18,000 seats in these institutions last year.The number of seats are expected to cross 20,000 this year. Central counselling for admission will be held in third week of June.

In the UP State Engineering Entrance Examination — the results of which were declared on Sunday — students from Kanpur dominated the merit list with 17 of them making their way in the top 100.Varanasi came a distant second with 10 students from the holy city making their mark in the merit list of 10 different courses. While students from nation’s capital Delhi also made it to the merit list with nine students, state capital Lucknow managed to get only four students in the coveted list. Shubham Toshniwal of Agra topped in BTech while Anuj Singh of Shahajahanpur in the Bpharma. The list of toppers in different streams included students from Bijnore and moradabad, too.Ashima Vishnoi of Bijnor topped in the Bachelor of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (BHMCT) category, while the first rank in BTech (BSc) was held by Swami Nath Yadav of Mau district. Likewise, Mohammad Azharuddin and Ayush Agarwal topped in MBA and MCA streams. The results were uploaded on the websites: www.uptu.nic.in and www.upresults.nic.in. The counselling would be held after the counselling for JEE and AIEEE would be over.The number of students taking up UPTU seems to have stabilised. While some 2.62 lakh students appeared in SEE last year, their number rose to 2.72 lakh this year.But the cause of concern was low appearance of students in MCA category. Only 20,773 students appeared in the stream.The examination was conducted in some 31 centres including some in the six cities outside the state -- Bhopal, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Roorkee, Jaipur and Delhi.77 out of 100 toppers declared in the entrance test for various professional streams were boys. The fairer sex could manage to post its presence on 23 spots.In fact, but for one out of the 10 streams of professional courses, the first rank holder were boys. Ashima Vishnoi of Bijnor was the only girl who stood first in the entrance examination for Bachelor of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (BHMCT).Delhi guys fared better: nine candidates managed to register their names in the toppers' list. In fact, topper of Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) and Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharma) (diploma holder) -- Yogesh Sharma and Harinder Singh respectively -- were from the national capital. The performance of girls from Delhi was better. Out of the nine toppers from Delhi, six were girls.There were five candidates each from Varanasi and Ghaziabad making it to the toppers' chart. Four students were from Agra. Candidates from Allahabad too did substantially well especially in the BTech (diploma holder) as four students including the topper, Deepak Mishra, were from Allahabad.Students from smaller towns like Moradabad, Shahjahanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri and Mau too made their presence felt in the SEE. The first rank holder in BPharma and MCA category -- Anuj Singh and Ayush Agarwal respectively -- are from Shahjahanpur and Moradabad. Likewise, two candidates from Lakhimpur Kheri -- Aseem Misra and Devanshu Pandey -- made it to the top 10 positions in the MBA stream.

Girls of class 10th and 12th have once again outshone boys in Council for Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) and Central Board of School Examination (CBSE) this year.The result for all regions have been declared on Wednesday in which 98.14% of girls in ICSE (class - X) have been declared passed.Similar in ISC (Class-XII), 98.18% of girls in comparison to 96.21% boys have marked success this year.However, boys in both ICSE and ISC have been able to secure top positions.The highest percentage in ICSE examination is 99% (English + best four subjects) while in ISC, it is 99.25% (English+ best three subjects).According to CISCE Board, a total of 1,08,217 students comprising 60,812 boys and 47,405 girls, had appeared in Class 10th (ICSE) exams while a cumulative 52,552 students, including 29,207 boys and 23,345 girls, had appeared in Class 12th (ISC) exam, conducted in March this year.In class 10th, the percentage of pass out students went to 98.05% while in class 12th it was 91.08% in 2009. The Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, (IIM-C) has decided to increase the fees for their flagship management programme by Rs 5 lakh.As per the new fee structure, each student taking admission for 2009-11 will have to spend Rs 9 lakh for two years at the institute.They will have to pay Rs 4 lakh the first year and Rs 5 lakh for the second year for the Post-Grauate Diploma in Business Management and Post-Graduate Diploma in Computer aided Management (PGDM and PGDCM) programme. The batch of 2008-10, however, will pay Rs 7 lakh.Last year, when IIMs in Ahmedabad and Bangalore had increased their fees to Rs 11 lakh and Rs 9.5 lakh.In order to enhance the faculty strength, the Board of Governors has decided to have 120 teachers instead of the current 88.

The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M), which recently introduced engineering courses on Google and YouTube, is set to get up to Rs 50 lakh as an academic grant from Google to fund its National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL). The US-headquartered search giant is helping IIT-M develop a text-based search engine to index its video courses. The company will provide the grant to IIT-M in a few months.NPTEL plans to enhance the quality of engineering education in the country by developing curriculum-based video and web courses. Seven IITs and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, have collaborated to carry out the venture. The IITs have been nominated as the fourth-best institutions in providing free university courses.NPTEL in the first phase of the project, has developed around 250 courses. All of these are available online for a duration of 4,500 hours, free of charge. The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has sponsored the project with Rs 20 crore. In the second phase, the institute has asked for Rs 50 crore from the MHRD. The institute will double the of number of courses and will also conduct 200 workshops for the faculty involved to train themselves. The second phase will be complete in three years.Over 90 government institutes, government aided institutes and private institutes are using the services of NPTEL. IIT-M distributes web contents free of charge to the government-funded institutes. The institutes, which require video content, pay a minimum sum of Rs 15,000 to the institute to cover the cost of three 500 GB SATA hard disks and postage.It also allows the content to be hosted on a website local to the institutions (intranet). Privately-funded institutions can obtain the entire web course contents on DVD ROMs for hosting them on their Intranet for a fee of Rs 1 lakh. The number of candidates appearing for CAT, to be held on November 16, has risen 15% from last year’s 2.4 lakh, according to an IIM-Bangalore official. An acceptance offer this year will go to just one in 138 candidates against one in 120 last year.All the candidates who have taken the CAT 2008 will receive their CAT score cards by mid-January 2009 from the IIMs to which they had sent their application forms. Besides the IIMs, the CAT scores will be accepted by 102 non-IIMs. The three-hour test will start at 10 am across the country.

Government has approved the tabling of a bill in parliament to create a South Asian University (SAU).The university is expected to commence functioning in the second half of 2010 with 5,000 students and a postgraduate academic programme.India had proposed SAU's establishment at the 13th SAARC Summit held in Dhaka in November 2005 to provide world-class facilities and professional faculty to students and researchers from SAARC countries.An Inter-Governmental Agreement for establishing the university was signed at the 14th SAARC Summit in April 2007. The SAARC member states also decided that the university would be established in India.The SAARC member states have already set up a Project Office for the university that India is funding for two years.It will also be the first international university to be set up in India and would have branches of learning in other SAARC member states.

The ministry of human resource development is considering a proposal to introduce preparatory courses at the Central universities to enrol quota students who fail to secure admission. The year-long feeder course would coach them for admission to the varsities.The proposal was put forward to the Supreme Court in September in a reply filed by the ministry in response to a petition seeking direction on the vacant seats in the quota categories in all the 13 IITs—seven existing and six launched this year.The proposal comes in the wake of implementation of 27% quota for OBCs in Central educational institutions this year, which has led to several vacant seats in the category.At the 13 IITs, which implemented a 9% quota for OBCs this year, just 20 out of 654 seats for the category remained vacant. But at the six new IITs, only seven out of 54, or 12%, of the seats reserved for ST students have been filled.

The university has decided to monitor the progress of the projects on a monthly basis so that students take their assignments seriously.The UPTU has started to set up project evaluation committees, which will be functional from the current academic session. The committees are being set up at three levels. The state level committee, which has already been constituted, comprises the vice-chancellor, additional examination controller and six professors — from university and engineering and management institutes.The other two types of committees will be set up by each of the institutions. While one will comprise selected faculty members headed by the concerned college director, the other will comprise senior teachers of different engineering and managements streams of the same college.

One thousand meritorious students across the country would benefit from the UGC Suvarna Jayanti scholarships.The scholarships are for postgraduate studies from the coming academic year in conventional subjects such as humanities, languages, literature, commerce, and basic sciences. The students will be paid Rs. 2,000 per month for two years. Selection will be on a national basis and distribution of different subjects will depend on the proportionate enrolment in various PG courses.Another new scheme was to provide grants up to Rs. 2 lakhs each to UGC recognised colleges for expenses connected with the accreditation and assessment process. This would come into effect from April and help a large number of colleges that could not seek accreditation, and benefit up to 6,000 colleges in the country.
The UGC would also offer the "Professor of Eminence" scheme sanctioned by the Union Human Resource Development Ministry to 500 teachers in universities. "There will be a national selection based on the applicant's contribution to teaching and research which has to match international standards. A UGC committee of experts will do the screening; there is no age or designation limit and the professors of eminence will be paid Rs. 10 lakhs to Rs. 15 lakhs and provided research facilities.

The Supreme Court ruled on that all vacant seats reserved for other backward classes or OBCs in Central educational institutions should be filled up by general category students.A five-judge Constitution Bench comprising Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justices Arijit Pasayat, C.K. Thakker, R.V. Raveendran and Dalveer Bhandari passed this order on an application filed by the former Chennai IIT Director, Professor P.V. Indiresan, seeking a direction that the 432 vacant seats in SC/ST/OBC categories in the IITs be filled by general category candidates.The apex court also directed the Union government to maintain cut-off marks for OBC students at 10% less than the general category.The institutes must “endeavour to fill up” vacant seats with general category students by the end of October, the Chief Justice said.The Centre, however, had already informed the Court that only 20 out of 654 seats meant for the OBCs in the 13 IITs remained vacant, of which 11 were in architecture/design course. Also only 47 seats meant for SC/STs remained vacant in the six new IITs because no preparatory course could be held.

75% attendance minimum for taking exam

CBSE has issued a circular to all affiliate schools directing them to inform students about the exam by-laws well in advance.The by-laws state that candidates sitting for class X and XII finals must fulfil 75 per cent attendance to be eligible to sit for the board examinations.As per the examination by-laws, students short of attendance up to 15 per cent can only approach the CBSE chairman for condonation. However, the representation has to be send to the board by the respective school principals.The circular issued by the board states that in those cases where students are not regularly attending the schools for various reasons, the rule of CBSE must be brought to their notice in writing.

Central Board of Secondary Education has decided to include a 20-mark practical project in sociology for students of Class XII.It will be implemented in the Board examinations to be held in 2010. The project has been introduced in Class XI from this academic session onwards and shall be implemented for the students appearing in their Class XII examination next year.New textbooks of sociology were introduced for Class XI in 2006-07 and for Class XII in 2007-08, in view of the revision of the syllabus according to the directions from the National Curriculum Framework 2005.
