The problem is, of course, for "forgiving" to not be "schlumpy." How does one look put together and professional without a) looking huge, b) forgoing comfort (increasingly important), or c) putting some sort of big, unflattering bow on one's chest, like they used to do when our mamas were growing us?

[Update: How the heck did this grammar girl not notice the apostrophed plural in the last sentence?! I'm mortified my fingers typed it, and sorry to anyone offended. Sigh.]

First, I'm a very lucky pregnant gal. My Beans like, apparently, to grow compactly. I suppose I have height to thank for this, but both bumps (so far) have been of the basketball variety. Which means that pants and skirts can stay slim (even though I do need those ridiculous panels now), affording me some leeway for volume up top.

The same rules of proportion apply for those of us wearing M clothes as "regular" garb:

1) Volume up top? Fitted on the bottom - and vice versa.

2) Well-fitting, if not fitted = always better than something that looks like it was made for someone else

3) Adapt, adapt, adapt with accessories.

A friend of ours "announced" her pregnancy at our wedding several years ago. She'd bought a relatively plain black dress with pretty pleats, just graceful enough to compliment her bump. And added a lime green ribbon at the bodice. Charming and pretty.

Today, I'm sporting a favorite BCBG black and white jersey dress with a pop-arty print (non-M). It's supposed to be a shirt dress. I simply belted it at the bodice instead. Minimizes my bump much more than any M-designed clothes in my closet.

I have about 5 other dresses in my closet - all some sort of knit or jersey - some M, some not, but they all fit me without bagginess. They hug the curves H loves so much (I'm blessed to have an H that thinks I'm the most beautiful pregnant girl in the world) and keep me happy in the style-department.

Oh, and then I throw on my beloved patent leather peeptoe lillybee pumps with my biker chick leather jacket, and oilá! I'm the hippest Mama at pre-school drop off.

Boo! to You

In the midst of Halloween preparations, I thought I'd check in with the Infintessimal Readership.

What makes the best Halloween costume for you?

Do you want to be scary? I've only got one party on the calendar this year, and it's a kid's birthday party. So since The Bean requested "Thomas" (of Tom and Jerry), H and I are going to be Tom's owners: a 50s-era pipe-wielding and apron donning couple (it was beyond my energy to make more than one set of ears for us). I happen to have a polka-dot shirt-dressy M dress in the closet, and we'll figure H's out on the fly.

*Pics courtesy of Tom and Jerry Online, an unofficial fan site

I gave in to trend...

I hit Tyson's on Saturday afternoon, hoping beyond all hopes to add some roomy but stylish garb to my wardrobe (I'm in a terrible between phase, where most M clothes look huge and cow-like on me, but "regular" stuff is iffy. The first "Ms." I knew, she was probably 70+ at the time, with short dyed strawberry blonde hair, zebra-striped stillettos, and had come in on the train from New York City. She was our cotillion dance instructor, leading us mercilessly through the niceties of elegant society (white gloves, receiving lines, and the boys finding the girls seats before offering to get them punch and cookies). She ruled the ballroom at the Kennett Country Club (where my grandparents, avid golfers, were members) with a set of castinets, starting and stopping Sam Tavoni's ivory tickling at whim. In my prized Laura Ashley dress and gloves, I glowed with pride (and probably still have the trophy, somewhere) from winning the end-of-season dance contest with Matt, the trumpet-playing cutie from "the other school" who eventually went on to play trumpet at my BabySis' wedding, a break from his daily life as a father and respected community member owning a group of local funeral homes.

But whenever I see tiger stripes, I fondly remember Ms. Howell. I can still hear them clicking across the floor when she walked - but not when she danced...even at 70, her feet never touched the floor...

Lest I forget...

looks like the timing of The Bug is going to keep me from going to the DSS Wednesday. And I was in yoga pants and a T one more day while we administered juice, cheerios, and multiple doses of on-demand Mickey Mouse to The Bean. She's doing better, but needed her mama home today.

So now I really do have to figure out what to wear to work tomorrow...and it needs to be relatively easy access for the 19 week - yup - can't believe The Bean 2 is 4 months away - ultrasound.

This is when the 70s-80s teacher wrap-around skirts are sounding really good. She sat right down, arranged her Meow Meow and Man next to her, and settled in. She then sat primly and patiently while the sweet lady taking care of mama's feet put the tissue between her toes, then painted bright pink, gold sparkles, and a clear coat on her teensy little toes. Then her fingers.

She sat still, reading a magazine, 'til they all dried. Like she'd been doing it for years. Clearly a diva in the making.

In the meantime, I'd let her pick mama's toe color whilst waiting for our chairs. She picked a lovely bright red, perfect for my skin tone. Seriously, this child has a future in the business (though I haven't yet convinced her that the big blush brush is for her face, and not for cleaning the bathroom).

And I've been happily toddling through the week since, pretty red toes shown off in whichever peeptoes and flip flops I can find. They make me feel just that much more put together, and almost inspire me to put together a complete outfit. So I used them as a springboard this morning for donning a pretty blue dress and bright shoes.

Once I do my face (after work - just can't bear makeup in this heat, even inside) for my night out at the September Issue showing downtown, I'll feel downright dressed.

I cannot tell a lie...

...at least not intentionally...

When I posted about my style solution dress that made my boobs fabulous and made people ask, "are you?" I needed:

Comfort

"Disposable" (read: who cares if it gets cake or BBQ sauce on it 'cause it washes easily)

Chic-ness

Shows up well in pics - posterity, you know

My solution: actually shaving my legs and donning a b&w striped minidress. Sleeveless cowlneck, it was cool and easy to move in. Can't really go wrong with black & white, either. (Yes, I have the best H in the world that he would consider something like that - and go a step further and say "I don't know why you haven't gone yet - why don't you go tonight?" Seriously.)

Now I know that HK probably wouldn't have something I'd want to wear to a child's birthday party with sticky fingers and wading pools, but I do wish I could find a way to get there. It might all be gone at this point, what with news spreading like wildfire last week (I think it was the most twittered and tweeted and statused thing in the DC Style World ever), but maybe just a minute to peek in...

Style Dilemma: Mama Rocker Chic - on the cheap

3120 4ever posted on facebook: looking for ideas for what to wear to a concert at Merriweather in a few weeks. Stone Temple Pilots. I have virtually nothing useful in my closet right now and was hoping to get to the mall soon. Something skirtish but not dressish?

Background: 3120 4ever just happens to be one of my bestest friends - and my college roommate. She's in the same boat I am, with a Bean and not enough time to find style sometimes (though she always manages to look better than I at things).

The rest of the conversation:

DC Celine: funny - i'd go straight for a summery casual dress. why no dress?

3120 4ever: I guess I was trying to bring out my inner rocker and sundress seemed too girly. But since I rarely dress up anymore, maybe it's worth the investment. I have a bridal shower the weekend after, so that's at least two chances to wear it. Plus, if I get something this week, you might see it on Saturday for The Bean's [2-year-old birthday - eek!] party!

DC Celine: you can do rocker chick and dress at the same time! lemme look online tonight!

Of course, it took me longer than a night to get back to her. In my head, I have something slightly flowy, cotton (for the sweat absorbtion factor), and not fussy at all. Jersey would work well. My initial search at target.com (easy to find a location, and not. expensive) yielded:

Fun strapless, a little beachy, and understated cool-chick color. Problem? Wearing it at the concert works, but maybe not anywhere you have a grabby toddler...wardrobe malfunction, anyone? Put on a pair of understated gladiators (ubiquitous though they might be), and you're golden.

Love, love, love the fun color, and seems cool and wearable. A little girlier, but with a bad-ass bangle or cuff, out comes the inner-rocker.

The other place to look? Urban Chic's Baltimore outpost (3120 4ever's up north) - and all locations, for that matter - have just started a summer sale - great time to pick up a few pieces you can still wear for the rest of the summer and not break the bank (as much).

Well-Fitted

It's the "tip" that everyone and their mother's brother (almost literally) has heard: the fastest way to make a woman's clothes fit and look better is to wear The Right Bra.

17,300,000 results in a web search. Vicky's touts it with miracles and angels. "As Seen on TV" ads offer all sorts of ways to adjust what you have, the latest being the round thingy that slides your straps together and "makes you look at least a cup size bigger."

Right.

But the right one, well-fitted, honestly will do wonders for how things look and feel. I've written about my troubles, and lately I've had a hard time finding one that fits. I haven't taken my own advice and Gone Fitting, but rather I attempted an online purchase because I just plain ol' didn't have time to go to a store. It sorta worked. What I found works better than the ancient, worn out things I'd been wearing, but it's just not quite right.

I'm still not convinced that The Right Bra is out there for me, though I've certainly found ones that Fit Better.

But for those who really need the update, there are absolutely local options. Nordstrom's has a competent department, and Bethesda's Sylene and Vienna's Trousseau are touted - at least to brides-to-be and those looking for undergarments for formalwear (though they both serve the general public, too). In the Post, Brigid Schulte gives us a first-hand account of what it's like to be fitted by an expert. Amusing, frank, and, yes, helpful...it's a fun read that will motivate you out the door to Get Fitted.

Will Forgo the Bad Pun for Butter

Seriously, these shoes are gorgeously amazing - and, oh, btw, ridiculously comfortable. Part of their fall line, it's a classically styled pump with a little bit of "quilting" at the heel and around the toe box. It's a deep deep brown - almost black - with the barest hint of coppery flecks - just like you'd find on a metallic car paint. It'd make a perfect "new neutral" and go with Everything.

And I'm in love.

I should've put myself down on the list for a pre-order at simplysoles.com's preview and Meet the Designer (Lee and her lovely assistant took the train down from NYC) event Wednesday, but I'm just trying to be frugal.

But I do have that "if I think about it for days in a row, I need to buy it" policy, so...

Sad News for a Washington Tradition

I know it's teensy to read, but here's the gist: Harriet Kassman is retiring after 41 years, and closing her shop at Mazza Gallerie. My newly purchased frock was comfy and flattering, if almost too revealing (the Girls looks fabulous).

The one caveat: I'm pretty sure some of the looks I got weren't because of the Girls - at least not in that way. Let's just say that I saw a couple of "knowing looks" from women. In and out in less than 1/2 hour.

The dress selection in the Clarendon store isn't fabulous, but tried on the red knit, the white shift, a white sleeveless shirtdress, and the winning black fluttery cotton number.

Results...

Red - probably needed a bigger size, but just didn't like it enough to bother. Still a good color, though.

White shift - very pretty retro conceptually, but fit just wasn't right on me. Next size would've ballooned, but this size didn't sit right (I apparently have a long torso).

Shirtdress - there's a reason I don't wear them. They're oh, so boxy on me. Would love love love to find one that works, but have yet to get there.

Black cotton - for some odd reason, there's no pic of it on the Loft website. It's cool, shapely but loose, and the black, gauzy cotton will let me sweat without showing. It might show yogurt fingers all over, but the pretty rosette detail (yes, bad PR flashbacks, I know, but it's sweet, I swear!) makes up for it. Flattering v-neck with a loose fluttery collar.

I didn't think I'd want black, and I spent a little more than I'd wanted, but while it's not the most amazing piece of clothing in my closet, I can see it being my "go to" summer number. On Sunday, with a statement necklace and Chie Mihara pumps. On Wednesday, at the simplysoles event, ankle-tie wedges or flat strappy sandals.

Oh, and I picked up a pair of fun, on sale shades, as The Bean finally tore apart (literally) my beloved $10 Target pair. $14.99 is almost as good, and the gold detail cracks me up.

Style Dilemma: Chic in Church

My nephew is getting dunked this weekend. Well, it's a Presbyterian chuch, so just drizzled on, unlike my Bean, who was full monty and dipped to her head (screaming and peeing on the nice priest).

BabySis (better known in this world as Prettyinpink) has a lovely navy jacket and pale skirt, very demure, ladylike, and appropriate mama.

I, on the other hand, am at a loss. I have a standby suit - which I wore to The Bean's baptism - but it's navy and cream. Am not going to do that to BabySis.

So I'm searching for a nice summer dress, as I have none in my wardrobe. My only recourse is Clarendon shopping, which is oddly mixed with boutiques and chains. I'd love to Buy Boutique (Farinelli, for example), but just can't do the cost right now, even with summer sales. I can't stomach spending more than $50 on a dress. (A quick run through South Moon Under last week yielded nada that wasn't fit for the beach.)

So Ann Taylor Loft it is. My choices, per webbrowsing...

White with a toddler is a serious risk, but love the cut and detail. Other than a massive computer problem that gave me some found time to wander the Clarendon shopping district (really not a bad place to shop), there's no way in heck I'm gonna get to a store.

But I really want a fun summer dress and a pair of sandals - at minimum. In my cart now...

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='L.L. Just when I thought I wouldn't need them any more, the skies opened up. The Bean is very happy when Mama puts on her boots, too, so we can stomp in puddles.

Necessities purchased: been in the market for new, ah, foundation garments, as mine are nearly dead. Because I can't seem to ever get to a brick and mortar store, I went back to Ye Olde Vicki's. I was addicted to her stuff in college (even went so far as to buy matching "sets" with 3 girlfriends - yeah, we were wierd), but haven't worn it in forever. Somewhere in the nether regions of our condo is a pair of ridiculously useful duck boots - 9", I think. I love them. Like rubber. So I'm going to take this as a "you get what you pay for" (sometimes) sign, and go to my fave outdoor store. It's about time I ordered them online and just had them in hand.

Now...to choose between classic Wellington green and over-the-top seafood...
