Hello and welcome to my photographs of Newcastle Upon Tyne, England and surrounding areas. You can click on the pictures to see most of them in a minimum 1024 width to use for your desktop if you so wish. I am constantly updating most of the pages and adding new ones every now and then. Armstrong Bridge in Jesmond Dene

Northumbria University has its origins in three regional colleges: Rutherford College of Technology, the College of Art & Industrial Design and the Municipal College of Commerce. An amalgamation of these three institutions formed the Newcastle Polytechnic in 1969, which became the major regional centre for the training of teachers with the incorporation of the City College of Education in 1974, and the Northern Counties College of Education in 1976.

Northumbria was inaugurated as a university in 1992. There was much discussion over the potential name of the new University and one potential name was the City University of Newcastle upon Tyne. However, concerns over confusion with the nearby University of Newcastle upon Tyne and also over the new name's initials saw it dropped before it was used. Newcastle Polytechnic was thus upgraded under the name University of Northumbria at Newcastle.

The trading name was simplified to Northumbria University in 2002.

Over the weekend of 5-7 May 2007, Northumbria University erected their landmark footbridge across the central motorway in Newcastle Upon Tyne. This is part of the £100m+ City Campus development. This is timelapse footage from one of the universities webcams of the installation.

Tynemouth Metro Station

Tynemouth Metro station is one of the oldest stations and possibly the grandest on the Tyne and Wear Metro network. It was opened in 1882 by the North Eastern Railway and is now a Grade II listed building.

Only the small portion of this once vast station now used by the Metro has been refurbished. A regular flea market is held in the station buildings every weekend, with an occasional farmers' market too. The Friends of Tynemouth Station have also arranged book fairs and displays of artwork at the station.

In 2007, English Heritage placed the station on its "at-risk" register of notable buildings in need of restoration.

A run down and almost completely deserted estate in Benwell which is being readied for demolition.

Pilgrim Street

Pilgrim Street runs from the Tyne Bridge to Northumberland Street and was once part of the A1 Motorway before it was diverted away from the city centre. The lower part of the street was demolished during the construction of the Tyne Bridge in the 1920's and in the 1960's notorious local councillor T Dan Smith built Swan House, in my opinion, the worst of his many eyesores that blight the Newcastle skyline.

Pilgrim Street contains, amongst other notable buildings, Alderman Fenwick's House, Newcastle a Grade I listed early 18th century merchant’s house, the newly restored Tyneside Cinema the long abandoned Art Deco former Paramount Theatre later known as the Odeon Cinema.

Now it's probably Newcastle's most run down street although I believe plans are afoot to renovate the area.

Heaton Road

I started to gather my many photos of the Heaton area together for a post and found around half of them were solely photos of Heaton Road so I though it deserved a page of it's own and the Heaton post will show up on this site at some stage in the near future. Don't forget that you can mail me if you want to see a particular part of Newcastle whether I've already published a page on that area or not.

Anyhoo, Heaton Road is the area that I grew up in in the 70's and 80's and I attended the nearby North View School which has now been demolished. If anyone has any photos of the school that they would like to share with readers of this site please get in touch.

Cloughs sweet shop(Cloughies") was, and still is, the best sweet shop in Newcastle, or possibly the world. :) The shop itself has remained largely unchanged in my lifetime and the feelings of nostalgia can be as overpowering as the smell of hundreds of different types of sweets when I enter the doors today. If you've never paid a visit before now is the time!

Bamboo Bridge at SummerTyne

An eighth bridge to be built across the Tyne in Newcastle will be made out of 20 tonnes of bamboo from China. In the year the Tyne Bridge turns 80, a company called Bambuco has been commissioned to create a new landmark structure spanning the river as part of the annual SummerTyne festival.

The completed bridge will then be on show to the public from Fri 18 – Sun 20 July, marking the first weekend of SummerTyne, Newcastle and Gateshead's festival of music and art.

The bridge will reach from the grounds of HMS Calliope in Gateshead across to the Law Courts between the Tyne and Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

Northumberland Street

Northumberland Street is the major shopping street in Newcastle. In terms of the cost of rent per square metre, it is the most expensive location in the UK (outside of London) to own a shop.

The street runs from the Haymarket and Civic Centre in the north, towards the Grey's Monument area at the south. It encompasses the entrance to the Eldon Square and Monument Mall shopping centres, and is home to retailers such as HMV, Marks & Spencer, Next, H&M, zavvi (formerly Virgin Megastore) and the flagship Fenwick department store.

South of Blackett Street, Northumberland Street turns into Pilgrim Street which runs to the Tyne Bridge. From the opening of the bridge in 1928 until the opening of Newcastle's Central Motorway (A167(M)) in 1975 Northumberland Street was part of the A1 between London and Edinburgh. It is now pedestrianised.

Up until 1999 the most northerly section of Northumberland Street from Northumberland Road onwards was still open to traffic and a busy bus route. This led to the shops in this part of the street being much less popular than those further south. This section is now pedestrianised in keeping with the remainder of the street. However some electronic maps still show this part as an accessible road.

Top Left - Thomas Bewick (1755-1828) was an iinternationally renowned artist, wood engraver and ornithologist who spent most of his working life in Newcastle. More here Wikipedia - Thomas Bewick.

Top Right - Sir Henry Percy (1366-1403), who, because of his ferocity in combat, was known as Harry Hotspur. He fought in several campaigns against the Scots and the French. More here Wikipedia - Sir Henry Percy

Bottom Left - Sir John Marley (1590-1673) defended Newcastle against the Scots army in 1644. He also served as the mayor of Newcastle after the Civil War and Restoration.

Bottom Right - Roger Thornton (Died around 1429) rose from rags to riches, making his fortune as a merchant. He later became the mayor of Newcastle 3 times and an MP. More here Wikipedia - Roger Thornton
