What is the History of Halloween: A Christian Perspective?

When we consider the history of Halloween (a Christian perspective), it may seem as if the modern holiday has gotten out of hand. After all, doesn’t Halloween glorify evil? Is it right to send our children out as devils and vampires? Should we emphasize the saints, whose nearly forgotten feast day is the reason for Halloween? Hallow is the same word for "holy" that we find in the Lord’s Prayer, and e’en is a contraction of "evening." The word Halloween itself is a shortened form of "All Hallows Eve," the day before All Saints Day. This holiday, properly understood and celebrated with all of its fun trappings, can be a way for us to deepen our understanding of faith.

Halloween has its roots in the ancient Celtic tribes of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Brittany. On October 31, the tribes would celebrate the festival of Samhain, the lord of the dead. During this festival, Celts believed the souls of the dead -- including ghosts, goblins, and witches -- returned to mingle with the living. In order to scare away the evil spirits, people would wear masks and light bonfires.

When the Romans conquered the Celts, they added their own touches to the Samhain festival, such as making centerpieces out of apples and nuts for Pomona, the Roman goddess of the orchards. The Romans also bobbed for apples and drank cider -- traditions which may sound familiar to you. But where does the Christian aspect of the holiday come into play? In 835, Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration for all the martyrs (later all saints) from May 13 to November 1. The night before became known as All Hallow’s Even or “holy evening.” Eventually the name was shortened to the current Halloween. On November 2, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates All Souls Day.

The purpose of these feasts is to remember those who have died, whether they are officially recognized by the Roman Catholic Church as saints or not. It is a celebration of the “communion of saints,” which reminds us that the church is not bound by space or time.

History of Halloween (Christian Perspective) – The Customs
Many of the customs we now associate with Halloween are also derived from ancient celebrations.

For example, the current custom of going door-to-door to collect treats actually started in Ireland hundreds of years ago. Groups of farmers would go door-to-door collecting food and materials for a village feast and bonfire. Those who gave were promised prosperity; those who did not received threats of bad luck. When an influx of Irish Catholic immigrants came to the United States in the 1800s, the custom of trick-or-treating came with them.

Does your family carve a pumpkin to place on your porch for Halloween? If so, then you can once again thank the Irish for the tradition. Actually, the custom began with a turnip. People would hollow out the turnips and place lighted candles inside to scare off the evil spirits. When the Irish came to America, they discovered the pumpkin as a larger substitute for the turnip. And so, we now carve pumpkins instead of turnips for Halloween.

Although Halloween has become mostly a secular holiday, we need to remind our families of its Christian roots. Talk about ways that you can safely celebrate both the secular and Christian aspects of the holiday. One way might be through the costumes that your children choose. Talk about Halloween when you were a child. Did you have a favorite costume or enjoy a custom that your family celebrated?

Kids Say the Funniest Things

JACK (age 3) was watching his Mom breast-feeding his new baby sister. After a while he asked: 'Mom why have you got two? Is one for hot and one for cold milk?'

MELANIE (age 5) asked her Granny how old she was. Granny replied she was so old she didn't remember any more.
Melanie said, 'If you don't remember you must look in the back of your panties.. Mine say five to six.'

STEVEN (age 3) hugged and kissed his Mom good night. 'I love you so much that when you die I'm going to bury you outside my bedroom window.'

BRITTANY (age 4) had an ear ache and wanted a pain killer. She tried in vain to take the lid off the bottle.
Seeing her frustration, her Mom explained it was a child-proof cap and she'd have to open it for her. Eyes wide with wonder, the little girl asked: 'How does it know it's me?'

SUSAN (age 4) was drinking juice when she got the hiccups. 'Please don't give me this juice again,' she said, 'It makes my teeth cough.'

DJ (age 4) stepped onto the bathroom scale and asked: 'How much do I cost?'

CLINTON (age 5) was in his bedroom looking worried When his Mom asked what was troubling him, he replied, 'I don't know what'll happen with this bed when I get married. How will my wife fit in it?'

MARC (age 4) was engrossed in a young couple that were hugging and kissing in a restaurant. Without taking his eyes off them, he asked his dad: 'Why is he whispering in her mouth?'

TAMMY (age 4) was with her mother when they met an elderly, rather wrinkled woman her Mom knew. Tammy looked at her for a while and then asked, 'Why doesn't your skin fit your face?'

JAMES (age 4) was listening to a Bible story. His dad read: 'The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city but his wife looked back and was turned to salt.' Concerned, James asked: 'What happened to the flea?'

The Sermon I think this Mom will never forget ...
This particular Sunday sermon...'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust...' He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill
little four year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

ZonePass Store!

During this past Saturday and Sunday, we had one of our new ZonePass Store weekends! The ZonePass Store is open every five weeks and is an element of the Zone’s “ZonePass Program” which is our new reward system for our elementary ages. The program is designed to help partner with families to reach kids and grow them into a deeper relationship with Jesus! kids get points for digging deeper into God’s word by doing their class take-home sheets, memorizing their class scriptures, or finding the answers to the monthly Digging Deeper Questions! We want to assist the family by creating opportunities for God conversations in the household.

Update on ZonePass Reward System

This coming weekend is a ZonePass Store in the Zone! We have made a few improvements to the program since our last store and we just wanted to take a second to catch you up on these adjustments.

New ZONEPASS POINT SCALE - We changed the ZonePass Point scale down from 100 to 1. So it will be easier for the kids to do the math as they save up and redeem points at the ZonePass Store. If a child had a balance of 2600 ZonePass Points, their balance will now reflect 26 ZonePass Points. Of course, the prices of the prizes have also been adjusted!

New LOST ZONEPASS CARDS – We are making a policy that kids will no longer be able to obtain a replacement ZonePass Card in the classrooms. In the event that a child loses or misplaces their ZonePass Card, the child can purchase a replacement card at the ZonePass Store for 5 Points.

New HELP DESK AT THE ZONEPASS STORE – We now have a help desk setup at the ZonePass Stores on both campuses. The purpose of the Help Desk is to handle the “Customer Services” transitions kids might have such as: Looking in the “Card Lost and Found basket for lost ZonePass Cards”, buying a replacement ZonePass Card with Points, questions about ZonePass Point Balances. This Help Desk will help alleviate the pressure on the Prize purchasing kiosks.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! – To make this program a success we need lots of extra hands. If you are willing to help on a ZonePass Store weekend to help in the Store, please e-mail me at petera@cornerstoneweb.org and I will fill you in on how you can get involved!

Flu Season

Flu Season
We are approaching the fall you maybe asking what is Cornerstone doing to prepare for the flu season.

We are maintaining close communication with the Alameda County Department of Public Health and will follow their direction regarding actions that may be necessary in the future. The following information is from the Department of Public Health.

The symptoms of swine flu are very similar to regular seasonal flu symptoms. These symptoms include fever over 100, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, head and body aches, lack of appetite and lethargy. With swine flu there may be additional gastrointestinal symptoms such as of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Laboratory testing has found the swine flu virus is treatable with prescription antiviral drugs. If you or your child(ren) become ill, please contact your doctor.

We want you to know what we have done to help prevent the spread of the flu in our classrooms:
• Our maintenance and custodial staff will be disinfecting desktops,door knobs, counter tops, drinking fountains, and all toys on a daily basis
• Staff is vigilantly monitoring students for sign of infection and will turn away any child who exhibits flu-like symptoms or any symptoms that are on our well baby policy.

Here is what you and your child(ren) can do to keep your family healthy:
• Wash hands for a minimum of 30 seconds with soap and water (Hand sanitizer is not as effective, but can be used if you do not have access to soap and water)
• Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash
• Keep hands away from face
• Stay away from people who are sick
• Keep your child home from school if he/she is ill

Thank you for your cooperation as we work together to keep your child(ren) and family healthy. As new information becomes available, we will communicate that to you.

Planting a Seed

I had the opportunity to MC in ignite this past weekend. As it was my first time, I was a bit nervous. I have spoken to large groups of students before, but the Ignite kids are so used to being led by a such a wonderful MC, I knew I had large shoes to fill.

I really let Jesus lead the night! Truthfully, it has been some time since I COMPLETLEY handed the whole night over to Him! As I was up there, I remember thinking, "This is an awesome lesson!" The challenge for the night was to get kids to be thankful that parents love them enough to tell them "no". As this is a huge topic in my house, (I am the queen of saying no to my daughter) I was thrilled to talk about this to 4th and 5th graders. I prayed, "Jesus, let these kids see that we as parents and adults, tell them no sometimes to protect them. You have entrusted them to us and we love them so much that we want to keep them safe!"

During the lesson, the topic of the end of the world came up. I announced that before we see the end of the world, Jesus is coming back to earth and will take those who believe in Him to heaven with him. Of course, my excitement that came out with this statement was undeniable. However, I quickly moved back to the lesson not thinking twice about what I had just said.

The next morning one of our volunteers (who brings students from the public school she teaches at) caught me in the hall and told me that her drive home with the students (who had been in ignite) was quite interesting. The girls never knew that Jesus was coming back and they got so excited about it! She was able to take some time and really dive deeper into that conversation!

Jesus is in all of our classrooms at every service working in the hearts of those kids when we least expect it! I had no intention of bringing that topic up, but God did! Praise God we do not do this on our own! He is teaching through us! Just a reminder that we are planting seeds! We may not ever see the fruit until we get to heaven, but that is no reason to give up. Keep on planting those seeds and when we least expect the fruit will abound!

CandyZone Update

In the past years, Cornerstone Fellowship has offered the families of our community an alternative to traditional Halloween activities and "Trick or Treating." This year, October 31st falls during our regular Saturday evening service so we will not be organizing CandyZone. As an alternative, plan to be involved as a volunteer and/or with your children as we plan a great outreach event at the Serve the City center before Christmas. We'll use many of the same activities, games and prizes and throw a party for those less fortunate in our community.

Movie Under the Stars

This Friday night we will be showing "Finding Nemo" when it gets dark about 8-8:30 on the children's playground at Cornerstone Fellowship. Bring blankets, chairs, sweat shirts and anything else you think would be good to use for this time. We will be serving water, popcorn and a few other snacks for free. Feel free to bring something more or to share!

The point of this evening and this movie we chose is God seeks us. A timid clownfish sets out to save his kidnapped son-no matter what. We will use this movie to help children consider how much God has done to save us from our sins.

Launch of the all new ZonePass Program

With much joy and excitement, we very pleased to be able to officially announce that we will be launching the all new ZonePass Program on the weekend of July 18th and 19th. The ZonePass Program will be our reward-system that we will be using with all of the Elementary ages. If you help out in Elementary, you are a parent of an Elementary student, or you ARE an Elementary student; this new program is for you!

First Step (Baptism) Class

Children can’t be baptized until they meet with me or one of the Children's Ministry leaders.

That’s been my rule for the last 10-15 years. Occasionally I would have a child come up to be baptized that neither I nor any other Children’s Ministry Staff person or Volunteer knew. We knew nothing about the child’s Spiritual Journey or temperature and asking “why do you want to be baptized today” would yield the most… interesting responses. None of them all that satisfactory.

Why is this so important to me that each child attend the First Step class or meet with one of the Children’s Ministry Staff members? Because if I didn’t have this rule, about 15-20% of the kids being baptized haven’t yet made conscious decisions to follow Christ. An even higher number of children that we didn’t prepare are getting baptized for the wrong reasons.

How do I know this? For the past 5-6 years, I’ve met with the majority of the kids getting baptized. As I’d meet with these children, 15-20% would make decisions to follow Christ while meeting with me. That alone is reason enough to require the meeting. I also ask every child why they want to be baptized. Easily 50% of children asked answer with one of the two answers:

Because I want to go to heaven.
Because I want Jesus to wash my sins away.

I don’t blame them. They’re kids. They can’t know if they haven’t been taught incorrect theology and for many of these kids, their parents don’t know enough to teach them correctly. For me, it’s very important that a child be a Christ Follower before getting baptized. J It’s also important for me that a child know that baptism isn’t their ticket into heaven or their “Holy Sin Bath” either. Not knowing the true meaning of baptism cheapens the experience. Everyone should know why they’re doing what they’re doing.

Swine Flu

As you may know, there have been numerous cases of swine flu in Mexico, with smaller outbreaks throughout the world. No cases of the swine flu have been reported in Livermore, and only thirteen cases have been reported in the State of California. We are maintaining close communication with the Alameda County Department of Public Health and will follow their direction regarding actions that may be necessary in the future. The following information is from the Department of Public Health.

The symptoms of swine flu are very similar to regular seasonal flu symptoms. These symptoms include fever over 100, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, head and body aches, lack of appetite and lethargy. With swine flu there may be additional gastrointestinal symptoms such as of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Laboratory testing has found the swine flu virus is treatable with prescription antiviral drugs. If you or your child(ren) become ill, please contact your doctor and school.

We want you to know what we have done to help prevent the spread of the flu in our classrooms:
• Our maintenance and custodial staff will be disinfecting desktops,door knobs, counter tops, drinking fountains, and all toys on a daily basis
• Staff is vigilantly monitoring students for sign of infection and will turn away any child who exhibits flu-like symptoms or any symptoms that are on our well baby policy.

Here is what you and your child(ren) can do to keep your family healthy:
• Wash hands for a minimum of 30 seconds with soap and water (Hand sanitizer is not as effective, but can be used if you do not have access to soap and water)
• Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash
• Keep hands away from face
• Stay away from people who are sick
• Keep your child home from school if he/she is ill
