Canoing like that sounds wonderful! The only canoing I have ever done is in those huge metal two-man jobs that you rent from a boat livery. College and vet school canoe trips down the river were more about drinking beer (illegally!) and tipping over the other guy's boat without getting dunked yourself. The noise ran every living thing off the water front.

Trail riding is another way to get close to nature without spooking the wild things so easily. I can't count the number of deer, turkeys, and other critters that I have seen while on horseback.

As always Julie, you take such terrific photos. DH and I just got ourselves kayaks (albeit wide and stable ones) for our anniversary. We live near a lake and I am in heaven when we are out on the lake. Maybe I'll get brave, like you, and bring my camera with me next trip.

Your photos are wonderful, Julie. I refer to Great Blue Herons as stinkers that swallowed my Koi, but I love them and search for them. Simply magestic.

I've been on the trail of a Belted Kingfisher and I agree with your response, "Bye, Sucka!" Spooky birds.

You're so right--gliding up to what so many other vehicles scare off. I almost wonder if birds (or other wildlife) recognize the human figure within the boat--or if we get the benefit of being unrecognized as we canoe? Nice to be able to shed what is feared.

The second shot of the great egret just needs a little spiny thing jutting from the back of its head to remind me of a pterodactyl. Very cool photos!
