At Christmas time we often sprinkle some pomegranate seeds over the top. I know not everyone will have access to pomegranate seeds but don't let that stop you.littleorangeguyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12654738679277701610noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19608656.post-20157115723181176602007-12-11T09:23:00.000-05:002007-12-11T09:23:00.000-05:00It's an odd but wonderful way to live... Thanks for sharing the ways of goat cheese making but I'm really looking forward to hearing about the GOATS!

My sister-in-law had two Alpine goats as pets that enjoyed standing on the hoods of cars parked in the drive and nibbled the shoe strings right off your sneakers. On long walks on the few acre farmette, both would join us. Wilbur was the more lively one of the two and never missed an opportunity to head butt little Gina down a hill or into a stream. She was delighted! I was also the butt of his jokes on certain days.

Let's hear about them!Maryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02040099513110890878noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19608656.post-85802704806785692272007-12-11T09:18:00.000-05:002007-12-11T09:18:00.000-05:00Always love goats! And although I've been around many, as my girls showed them (Pygmy goats) in 4H for years, I've never seen the Saanens.
Most dairy goats in this area seem to be Alpines or Nubians--I wonder if it's a personal preference, or availability.ninahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07888238636692649668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19608656.post-2938207441900866372007-12-10T20:46:00.000-05:002007-12-10T20:46:00.000-05:00Dear Christine,I can't address the soy/estrogen qu...Dear Christine,

I can't address the soy/estrogen question, though it's an interesting one; it would take a bigger Science Chimp than I to answer that.

Brad sells directly to restaurants in the DC area. I don't think he makes enough cheese to supply a market like Whole Foods commands. Would you happen to know what stores carry their cheese? I would assume Whole Foods and maybe my neighborhood co-op.

Interesting about the goats eating soybeans. I wonder if it would be detected in their cheese? A good friend of mine is recovering from a mastectomy and since her tumor was deemed to be estrogen-receptive, her oncologist said she had to stop eating ALL products that contain soy.possumladyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08060146825196164963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19608656.post-36228107554685657512007-12-10T19:53:00.000-05:002007-12-10T19:53:00.000-05:00I've never seen a goat milking operation before. ...I've never seen a goat milking operation before. One late winter day one of the nannies decided to have her babies early. It was a nasty, snowy day and my boss had me come out to the goat shed to help sit with this mom while he went to buy an additional heatlamp. I actually got to see one of the baby goats being born--it was about the size of a puppy. It was something I'll never forget (and I still have a picture of one of the nannies and her kid on my refrigerator)RuthieJhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11663411478574192825noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19608656.post-1090470895856511102007-12-10T19:14:00.000-05:002007-12-10T19:14:00.000-05:00Hi Mojo--nice to hear from you!!I'll tell more abo...Hi Mojo--nice to hear from you!!
I'll tell more about where the cheese goes in a subsequent post--suffice it to say it stays in the Balto/Washington area.Julie Zickefoosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06654698829603424649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19608656.post-48373003157330552752007-12-10T18:43:00.000-05:002007-12-10T18:43:00.000-05:00It's wonderful to read about a farm that - since t...It's wonderful to read about a farm that - since they're friends of yours - must be sustainable and gentle on the land. We need more places like this to perpetuate the rural landscape we love so much. How widely is their cheese distributed? One wonders if they can make a living that way in this day and age. I sure hope so.MojoManhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11283343683800473324noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19608656.post-26675827002523167702007-12-10T18:42:00.000-05:002007-12-10T18:42:00.000-05:00Yum, yum yum.
