I'm a vegetarian, and I think that Think for a Moment needs to lighten up. It's like getting preached to on the street by one of those Radical Right people--I don't mind a gentle reminder from my very religious sister that God is up above, but save the sermons for the pulpit. Same goes for Think for a Minute--sure, I think eating meat is gross and bad, but come on; people are entitled to do what they please. Turn it around on yourself, Think. Would you want a lecture like that given to you?

I have also met Julie. I don't believe you could find a more intelligent, gentle, unassuming, talented person...and "think for a minute" is not even close. How dare anyone use Julie's blog to insult her and then promote their self-centered ideals in such a CONFRONTATIONAL way. Julie is quite correct when she says this is HER LIVING ROOM; as such, politically-charged discussions such as that one have no room here. Bravo, Julie, for dealing with this with tact and humor. I thought the squash joke was quite funny!

The most natural thing in the world for someone such as Julie who has studied nature, and made nature the focus of her life, is to be an omnivore. One fundamental that all life shares is that life feeds on life. Life is not possible without this. Anyone who tries to appreciate the incredibly intricate web of interdependencies of nature - the real definition of ecology - either understands this or lives with their head stuck down a hole.

On a lighter note, two bumper stickers intended to amuse, not offend:

Vegetables are not food.
Vegetables are what food eats.

I'm not a vegetarian because I love animals. I'm a vegetarian because I hate plants!

Dear Think for a minute. I looked up your link to Compassion over Killing (COK). It's funny because I remember the Washington Post doing a profile on Paul Shapiro the founder of COK, in 2003 and realized he was a neighbor in Takoma Park that I passed walking our dogs. It's funny because after reading that article, I thought, what a nice guy and what a great idea, getting more people to eat less meat rather than trying to get a few people to be vegans. He also stresses "nonconfrontational" methods as a way to NOT turn people off. You are certainly not portraying COK in a good light with your open hostility towards Julie and others and jumping to conclusions that her meat is factory raised. I understand your frustration, but I learned long ago that you cannot browbeat or shame people into thinking what you believe is the correct way to live.

think for a minute takes me back to my early twenties. I remember thinking, "Wow, I watch birds how on Earth can I eat chicken, and while I'm at it why should I be eating cows, pigs, deer, bison, etc?" I cut out meat (and it was tough, I really, really missed bacon).

Cut to two years later when I started working with the educational birds at The Raptor Center. One of my duties was to prep food for the birds: rats, mice, day old chicks, quail, chickens, ducks--and rabbits (commenters here who read my blog, know what a shock that would be for me). After I have gutted the food, I then have to feed it to the raptors, up to and including having a peregrine falcon sitting on the fist and feeding them quail pieces.

One day I snapped, I was feeding a peregrine a rat and she went for the darkest, reddest bits of rat first. After each bite she would make a kind of snapping sound with her bill as if salivating over how tasty it was. I couldn't take it, I wanted meat so badly, and darn it if birds could eat meat, why can't I--I'm an omnivore for cryin' out loud.

I'm not saying that there aren't changes that can't be made to our meat production practices, but have you ever watched an accipiter kill and feed? A Cooper's hawk doesn't have the strong feed a red-tail does and prey is often still very alive when a Coops begins to feed. It's an awful death to watch but that's how they do it and eat their prey--other birds. Uh-oh, is think it over going to take birds to task for eating other birds?

Hey susan gets native, I guess pointing out a misspelling refutes my whole point. Oh wait, it doesn’t. I’m sure Julie is a wonderful person but bird watching while eating a dead bird, in my opinion is an act of falseness (one of the definitions of hypocrisy). Great story on NPR today! my husbands friend stored a cooked chicken in our rv oven, (they were at the races) we found it on a very hot day weeks later when the smell drifted over the property from the garage. It was awful, it took about 30 minutes to find it. I have never smelled anything as foul as that chicken LOL!!

When I heard your piece on All Things Considered I was struck by the hipocricy of your commentary. Birdwatching is about identifying and enjoying a wide variety of birds in their natural habitat. However, you plan to serve a "healthy" dish which incudes chicken. A bird which most likely never saw a second of freedom in its life and died a gruesome death. So while you are out in the back yard this year, don't forget to add toutured dead chicken to your list!

I had to LAUGH out LOUD.
Something sort of like that happened to our neighbor. His driveway is very long, so he takes the garbage to the curb in his car. Well, he was running late one day, and forgot about the garbage. When Garbage Day came around again....well, you can imagine the rest.
Aren't vultures awesome? They smelled that yummy rotten chicken through a car and a garage...Nature's Garbage Men!
