I met a man this weekend who had had orchid thieves dig priceless clumps of seed-grown cypripediums right out of his yard. It's along the lines of what you say about shaping plants to our likeness, but it reverses the premise and discusses how some plants have succeeded because they have evolved ways for us to like them (apples, potatoes, cannibis, and others).
