I couldn't wait to visit the nesting birds in my yard today after a weekend away. The 6 bluebird babies fledged right on schedule. Their nest, though squashed flat as a pancake, was remarkably clean for such a large clutch. I saw and heard the parents around the yard today, trying to keep up with their fledglings, but didn't get a look at any of the new kids.

The tree swallows were due to hatch on Sat, but the cold wet weather must have delayed them, since they were in the process of hatching when I checked today (Mon.) I saw 1 egg, 2 wet hatchlings, and a very annoyed female during my quick glance in. It was too cold to do a thorough inspection; I wanted to get the mother back on the clutch ASAP, so I will have to do a head count another day.

The house wren has laid 6 eggs. I wonder if she is done yet. I have yet to see the wrens, haven't even heard him sing, but the nest and eggs are unmistakable.

A box was empty for several early checks has been ignored lately, so I took a quick peek today. What a shock - 4 fully feathered little gray baby birds. I couldn't ID them at first, then I noticed the moss nest and the dark caps on their heads - My first nesting Carolina Chickadees! What a plesant homecoming surprise.

The second surprise was not so nice. A nest of bumblebees on top of another chickadee nest. Don't quite know what to do about that problem. I haven't had to deal with bees in a box before, only wasps.

Very busy breeding season in my yard.

To Peghat, who has found a baby titmouse: Monday morning, go out and listen for titmice, especially the raspy calls of baby titmice being fed. Sit quietly and observe them through binoculars. See if you can locate the other fledglings. If you can, leave this one on an elevated perch as close to them as possible, and hope for the best. If you can't find the family, find a wildlife rehabilitator who accepts songbirds and give the bird over. You can Google (your state) and Songbird rehabilitator and see what comes up. Or you can call your state DNR--they keep lists of rehabilitators. Kitten chow, soaked, mixed with scrambled whole egg; mealworms fed with forceps are good foods. Feed every half hour. If it won't gape, chirp and squeak until you make a sound like a titmouse, tickle the corners of his gape, and his mouth will fly open. Good luck.
