We have a woodpecker tree in our front yard in Central Mississippi. We have toyed with the idea of cutting it so that it doesn't fall on the house or ruin our "landscaping." We haven't because we would have to live without the bird show. When Katrina blew through, this tree did not come down on the house even though many younger, healthier trees were pulled up by their roots. Since we have so much wood to cut and we are apparently safe we don't worry anymore. We have red headed woodpeckers, downies, and red bellied who use this tree. I haven't seen the signs of the pileated in this tree, but have in the woods. Many here cut down trees that look like yours because they are scared of beetles infecting pine tree crops. Little do they know that when they see the gapping holes and lost bark they have a natural insecticide working. Perhaps their would be less transmission if pesticides and cutting and dragging practices were eliminated.

I'm amazed that we have one pair of pileateds, and know what you mean about the power of those birds. When they finish searching for bugs, they stop by the suet cakes and make the feeding station rock as they peck away.

BTW, Chet Baker may want to stop by my blog and meet Robin Goodfellow, who arrived at our house Saturday. He's quickly become the most spoiled puppy ever, but is surprisingly well-behaved for such a young pup (9 weeks). Every morning he curls up at my feet while I read the paper, and is doing about 50/50 with the housebreaking. He's 2 pounds, 4 ounces right now.
